I was there yesterday - well computer History Museum
- Kevin Marks
Keith... I have no idea why but your video feed is being chopped off at my end... not your fault but Ive never seen this happenh before
- Tina Chase Gillmor
My programmer buddies are over 50% Andoird. It's easier to develop for.
- Murray Macdonald
I remember when the OS switch happend in early 2000 for OSX. The years prior EmergingTech show was 90% PC... next year it flipped on it's head.
- Jerry Schuman
And... Yahoo just bought the 4th startup for this week. Astrid, GoPollGo, Milewise, and now Loki Studios.
- Nir Ben Yona
We are moving at 65 MPH and Scoble wants us to be driving at 100 mph
- Christian Burns
OSI vs. TCP/IP don't bring back bad memories ;-)
- Jerry Schuman
Apple is sleepy while the HTML5 and JS communities are moving at lightspeed. New platforms are popping up everywhere. The launch of the harp.io platform is exciting.
- Murray Macdonald
no new Beatles? Steve is obviously not a Belieber
- Charlie Isaacs
seriously though, Google fails forward extremely well. Even if self-driving car and Glass fail, they (and we) are learning so much from these. And from all of the other projects they shuttered.
- Charlie Isaacs
NeXT brought Steve Jobs back. Apple needed a new OS.
- Murray Macdonald
though the Apple Media Lab people who made Knowledge Navigator were hired in the Jobs era
- Kevin Marks
Jerry is right on, open source aftermarket self driving delivery trike.
- Christian Burns
I had one of those Kyocera Palm flip phones.. amazing phone..
- Kevin Costain
Believe in open standards... Why limit it to two companies?
- Murray Macdonald
Cause he was listening to people Like Steve Gillmor and John Taschek
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Jobs, like Benioff, had/have a rare combination of creative/technical/vision/marketing skills and they knew/know to hire people to make their dreams come true
- Charlie Isaacs
Tim Cook is not a Dreamer or a Futurist!
- Moe Glitz
from iPhone
Products that change us and how we do things becoume part of our lives and we just cant live without them
- Christian Burns
Facebook delivered a revolution in a browser, using open standards, not a corporate platform. Only cross-platform developments can access everyone given the fragmentation.
- Murray Macdonald
what Steve's saying about the iPhone-- I believe that was confirmed in Isaacson's book about Jobs
- Charlie Isaacs
I'll agree with the phone argument from Jerry.
- John Taschek
But notebooks -- going all the way back to the first "ultraportables" (Zenith) are even in more need to be disrupted. They're not mobile the way people think of mobile now.
- John Taschek
I think about Samsung and all the assets they have (appliances, heavy industry, cash). Google - future. Apple - ecosystem, love, belief. Microsoft -- history....
- John Taschek
What happened to Scoble's "Apple"is where all the Apps are developed!?
- Kevin Costain
Office is alive and well. MS made 6B last quarter.
- Murray Macdonald
The always on nature of mobile phones provides the data usage that miners and telcos live on. The "phone" becomes another network node of messaging, socializing, and consuming.
- Aron Michalski
Agree on the Intents Murray -- what a concept, multi-tasking
- Charlie Isaacs
What OS will your emedded systems run? Embedded in your body?
- Christian Burns
Apple will introduce an intents equivalent at WWDC I'll be money on that
- Kevin Marks
The web is the delivery channel for REST. REST is the magic all these platform apps and JS cross platform apps. JS is the language showing the growth.
- Murray Macdonald
the web was always centered on information but market adoption focused on the marketing "brochure" side of things. It's just going back to its origin
- Jerry Schuman
Remember when Scoble and Marks were not on Gillmor gang?
- Christian Burns
Can someone explain to me the meaning behind the Gilmoor Gang comment concerning Adam and Eve. What do Adam and Eve have in common with Steve Jobs? Is the future of computing really going to be all tablets and laptop? No more netbooks or even desktops? In 20 years, is everyone going to be wearing a computer on their physical body?
- Lamar Morgan
The Gillmor Gang — Robert Scoble, Kevin Marks, Keith Teare, and Steve Gillmor — well, we talked Google Glass. @scobleizer has certainly made the case for the life-altering shower-taking scenarios, but what the Gang got into was what happens next. Do we wait for the actual launch early next year, or is the die already cast with this alpha rollout? One thing for sure: there's plenty to unravel in this second Glass hour in a row.
- Steve Gillmor
You can now get a daily or weekly email digest for anybody's feed on FriendFeed. You'll get a daily or weekly email with the most popular posts from that person's feed. To get the email, click the "Email/IM" link at the top of anyone's feed, and select the "Best of day" or "Best of week" email option.
Thanks to Kevin for doing a great design for what turned out to be a more complex set of UI options than we had originally anticipated, and thanks to Tudor for implementing the email backend.
- Bret Taylor
I now get the FriendFeed Feedback posts as a Best of Day email so it doesn't fill up my feed, but I don't miss feedback. I also set up a "Best of Day" email for my "Technology people" friend list so I get a pretty good overview of tech news every day via email.
- Bret Taylor
This is a really cool idea Bret, I wish you can make that an RSS feed option as well. I'd be much more likely to read summaries in RSS than in email.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Casey: Thanks for the tip. What's the 7 before the "?" mean in the URL? The number of likes or replies needed to be included?
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
this is killer, the random influx of email during the day was kinda getting fail-ish. I love the daily digest.
- Drew Lucas
Very cool! Any way to get archives of previous months? (especially helpful for those of us who leave the internet for weeks at a time...)
- Mitchell Tsai
Ahsan: it is somewhat random right now when the emails are sent, but we built in the backend capability to control what time they are sent, and we plan on exposing that control to users in the future. Right now, it is kind of random - sorry!
- Bret Taylor
Cool! can i get a daily or weekly email digest for the "Saved searches"?
- 0M0M
from email
This will be incredibly useful. Thanks to all involved in the design and execution.
- Kathy Fitch
But what exactly is "Best"? Is it anything that has a certain number of likes/comments?
- Laura Norvig
@Bret LOL THAT WAS MY PROJECT! I will release it tomorrow. But you've also did it and killed my friendfeed application **sigh** But mine has multi-reporting weekly-daily-monthly at the same time and adjustable entry count!
- Alp
@Bret please consolidate me or I won't code new apps with you api! :-)
- Alp
Alp: we were not trying to withhold data. Later today the documentation will be updated to reflect the ability to obtain "Best of" for users. The feed id will be USERNAME/summary/N (similar to "Best of" for lists)
- Benjamin Golub
Hi Ben, that is pretty funny, I tried that URL earlier today to see if it has been secretly released :)
- Paul Kinlan
Bret: While Twitter struggle to keep their fail whale under control, you guys are developing stuff like this. Amazing - Thanks!
- Jim Connolly
awesome feature, this will be highly useful for my corporate group ideas / content sharing; projects, etc.... THANK YOU :)
- Susan Beebe
Great work. I especially like that it works on lists too.
- Meryn Stol
my inbox might say different, but I like that :-)
- Dobromir Hadzhiev
Wow, this is really neat! And it links into the idea I expressed earlier, re: reducing signup friction / enabling limited guest privileges. Imagine if I could embed one of my FF rooms on my personal web site, and enable people to subscribe to that feed by e-mail with just a couple of clicks... rather than saying "you can get e-mail notifications but you have to sign up for Friendfeed first." "sign up" -- though admirably lightweight on FF -- is still a huge barrier.
- Adam Lasnik
is there a love button cause I dont like this option I LOVE this option..great work guys
- (jeff)isageek
Three options I would like (1) Can I select "top 100" instead of "top 30"? (2) Could I select both "best of day" and "best of week"? (3) How about older timeperiods? I'd love to get an e-mail with stuff from last week or Mar 2009? Start & end dates? Anything to help me read FriendFeed off-line would be great since I spend long periods off-line at festivals (especially during summer time) or overseas. - Awesome job guys!
- Mitchell Tsai
So this works on groups too, cool! But we still cannot see Best of for groups on the site on friends lists. :-( I have several friends lists that include just groups and when I select to view the best of the page it's empty (even though if I got to the individual best of for those groups there are entries there).
- Kol Tregaskes
does anyone know of a web service that can do this? (I'm thinking weekly email updates of my favorite feeds/people) I don't think there's anything like friendfeed ..
- Franc, a rememberer
@kevin Facebook seems to be trying to figure out how to take all that traffic and turn it into money... unlike ost companies who know how to make money and are trying to get traffic..... what does that say?
- Matthew Voshell
@clive I tried graph search... it "works" but I never use it...
- Matthew Voshell
"Walked outside with Google Glass for the first time. Stepped in dog poop almost immediately. Pretty sure this is what the future is like." Aaron Gotwalt
- Kevin Marks
so looking forward to Glass, my neck hurts having to constantly look down at my phone
- Da
Because kids dont have enough access to video games..
- Christian Burns
@Matthew Google search became terribly boring, link results too predictable or gamed. Graph Search much more interesting. FB engineering paper explains why.
- clive boulton
@Da They might need to figure out how to cool the CPU when Glass is attached to an external battery.
- Alex de Soto
You can't write local apps... My understanding is all 3rd party apps are in the cloud. Is that not true? Can you install a local app?
- Murray Macdonald
you need to hack it to write local apps yes
- Kevin Marks
It occurs to me that the feedback from wearing this device is where the real product is going to come from.
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Vuzix allows real local apps on the device...
- Murray Macdonald
Glass camera should recognize a limited set of gestures but ignore others, like fly swats for example.
- Alex de Soto
The fact it works at all is awesome. Main discussion is, is it ready?
- Keith Teare
And is it the right way to incorporate computing into the person
- Keith Teare
what I mean is that the things people discover in using the early product will create main features and dictate what this product looks and feels like eventually. Might be a "duh" statement but real important here
- Tina Chase Gillmor
so as good as google voice recognition on android
- Christian Burns
Glass is just like every other Google "product". Nothing more then another input to their global information AI. It will go the way of Reader as soon as it's signal to noise ratio is bad.
- Jerry Schuman
virtual keyboard floating in front of you? plenty of times when i don't want to talk out loud
- Da
I almost never want to talk out loud to a gadget
- Kevin Marks
WiFi direct is capable of much more than screens; any p2p communications between apps. If the eyepiece, camera, phone and such are going to collaborate together, you need much more than screen sharing. You need an open p2p API
- Murray Macdonald
i want multiple windows on my Glass. no external, multiple physical screens wanted
- Da
Google not tuning for personal nuances opens up for competition
- clive boulton
Bluetooth is too slow, unless it uses wifi. Wifi direct is all that and more... AirPlay is the new FaceTime. A proprietary flavor of a generic ability.
- Murray Macdonald
I'd rather have a device I can write local computer vision application on... Everything in the cloud is going to make everything latent. The problem is battery life...
- Murray Macdonald
"They" should get out of the way. Writing filters should be open to the 3rd party market. Notifications and "page rank" are proprietary solutions the 3rd party market can't innovate on. Let others write filters....
- Murray Macdonald
What's this Close Friends trick? Is there a blog post about it?
- Evan Prodromou
@Nir yea, Sir Jonny is hard at work, rumors point at a simplier design (ala google) and more continuty across softeware and hardware.... idk, i'm excited i think he's a visionary
- Matthew Voshell
Sorry, failed experiment. It meant more with spaces. Wonder if you can do an in here.
- Amyloo
Still waiting for the call. TMobile's pricing strategy is sort of interesting, but TMobile doesn't even work in my house, so it isn't useful to me.
- Robert Scoble
Glass needs cooling for Robert's streams.
- clive boulton
@Robert I finally got through the reservation line and have been using Tempo this week... I don't think any calendaring app will fulfill all my needs... buts its close... untill google NOW gets released for iOS... But the linkage b/t my mail, linkedin and FB is very helpful...
- Matthew Voshell
Heheh. I'm already working at thinking how I'm gonna extend Glass' battery.
- Robert Scoble
Hil, you'll be proud of me. I bought a tray of frozen monkey bread but I'm only baking two of the 12 rolls. (Hil is my calorie counting buddy on MyFitness Pal).
- Amyloo
someone (who shall remain nameless) decided to switch equipment right before the show ;-( always a problem
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Speaking of which, i'm looking forward to Danny Sullivan's comparison trial of all of the wearable fitness gadgets.
- Amyloo
Very proud of you! but what is monkey bread?
- Hilary Talbot
To add to the discussion list, here's a new kickstarter project that cleared $30k in 8 hours and has extended thier goal to $100k, Looks like a brilliant project and i can't wait to get them.. http://www.kickstarter.com/project...
- Matthew Voshell
Gooey sweet rolls. Great warm, but I woudl eat the whole lot if available.
- Amyloo
Earbuds w/ Magnetic Docking. Made in USA. - nice Kickstarter
- clive boulton
Amyloo: The Basis is best, but it looks dorky. I bought two.
- Robert Scoble
re extending battery life for glass. There will have to be head mophi packs modelled into hats...
- Hilary Talbot
Hmm.. I made hot cross buns yesterday... so good
- Hilary Talbot
Robert, I don't know about you but I'm more influenced than perhaps I should be by the appearance of apps. Dorky will turn me off to things.
- Amyloo
Tina: when troubleshooting these type of problems, always ask to take the plug off.
- Nir Ben Yona
Hilary: I'm thinking of a utililty belt with a cord that runs up my back.
- Robert Scoble
Amyloo: the Basis is a watch. Looks like my dad's Casio calculator watch.
- Robert Scoble
another few minutes guys. thank you for your patience
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Does Sullivan participate in the chat? i dont think so.. I wonder if he can get early access to this wearable tech, i bring it up every week with no love; Did i mention JOHN SCULLY is involved! http://www.indiegogo.com/project...
- Matthew Voshell
Thanks. Personally I'd just kick that guy off the show Tina. Oh, wait, is it Steve? Heheheh.
- Robert Scoble
remember this is a recording session ;-) sh*t happens
- Tina Chase Gillmor
@Robert... YES... i backed in way back in November... but they had to do a complete redesign and release got pushed back to June... But i think it's got the chance to destroy all the other wearble tech out now..
- Matthew Voshell
Amyloo: ScottEVests have cord channels built in. I have several of their vests and they are quite nice.
- Robert Scoble
Matthew: yup. Have you gotten yours yet?
- Robert Scoble
No, like i said.. they pushed the ship date back from March 1 to i think June... They decided the lights on the outside were too small and redesigned them to be bigger...I think they are made in vietnam
- Matthew Voshell
I cannot use Microsoft ones any more, too much Windows shoved in my way (same as Gmail compose)
- clive boulton
I'm watching today on a laptop running Ubuntu using Google Chrome. Microsoft software not involved.
- Kevin Costain
Makes sense as a metric, like pages per site. It does measure interest.
- Amyloo
Flipboard does do this thing where if i flip through enough... it'll say "loading" and neer load older content... idk.. does anyone else have this issue?
- Matthew Voshell
Zmags also reports time in a publication, useful in tandem with flips.
- Amyloo
Future buzzword: Personal Clouds, or prouds
- Kevin Costain
personal clouds, knowing it wont go out of business
- Christian Burns
@kevin... is there anything to the stories that Marissa os often hours late to meetings and makes people work around her? I know Tim Armstrong disagrees about the "work from home" issue too
- Matthew Voshell
Machine learning focus seem to be the new hot with VCs
- clive boulton
Marissa used to have 'office hours' at google which was blocks of unscheduled time that you could drop in on her. This turned into PM's camped outside her office to try and get a few minutes with her for a decision.
- Kevin Marks
RSS, freedom of association, this show is freedom to connect, to boadcast
- Christian Burns
I suppose a free/cheap alternative to apps like http://www.omnigroup.com/product... would be really helpful - I'm assuming a Little Outliner outline can be exported in various formats.
- Andrew Hazlett
Or if you like to go the flowchart way to figure out your flows/outlines Lucidchart is also SaaS with Google Drive reference.. https://www.lucidchart.com/
- Matthew Voshell
I used to use omnigroup apps but have switched to Lucidchart since its SaaS and much cheaper.. it does wireframing too
- Matthew Voshell
little outliner works less well on mobile, as there are no tab and arrow keys...
- Kevin Marks
Could this just be a second mode of text entry in notepad? Like switching to showing line numbers.
- Kevin Costain
Responsive Design is a MUST_HAVE anymore right?
- Matthew Voshell
Kevin has dreamy-like birds tweeting away in his yard
- Tina Chase Gillmor
An open standard, cross platform outliner, stores localy, is the dream
- Christian Burns
@cliveb Yea, Mind Meister allows you to invite people and simultanious edit (like drive) and once you're done... you can export it to Drive as PDF or whatever
- Matthew Voshell
I can't get links to work in littleoutiner
- Kevin Marks
Steves global vision is too abstract to be contained in an outline. Beatles songs dont fit into an outline either
- Christian Burns
If the internet fails big time one of these days, we'll all thank little outliner and tools like it. Outlining is also a good alternative to clunky CMS editors for setting up content to be used in adaptive or responsive design.
- Alex de Soto
I still have customers running Windows NT 4.0 :)
- Kevin Costain
@Nir.. i completly understand its importance.. i was looking for agreence haha; I just switched my website from smugmug to squarespace becuase they had much better responsive design and social network tie in http://www.wooliffotog.com
- Matthew Voshell
I like that google maps will turn your map to night mode,
- Christian Burns
Did anyone else notice that if an app redirects you to google maps in the mobile safari there is a button at the top to allow you to auto-open the local google maps app... pretty smart
- Matthew Voshell
Christian if you are talking about DC, I agree, especially around the Pentagon and DCA -- #ConspiracyTheory?
- Charlie Isaacs
I find Google maps transit is best from Mahattan to the other boro's
- clive boulton
My waze doesn't work at all in any tunnel, I don't know what Scoble is talking about :)
- Charlie Isaacs
I'm in DC too... and i think thats not accurate for a specific reason
- Matthew Voshell
I always lose my waze or any navigation system going through the big dig and any other Boston tunnel, then I get lost for about 30 minutes trying to regain reception :-o
- Charlie Isaacs
Angels bootstrapping is killing VC's in the way the music labels lost control of the distribution channel once artists starting selling direct (ergo louis CK)
- Matthew Voshell
Noticed VC's putting growth hackers on the ground (Ivory towers going)
- clive boulton
oh god, VHS tapes too. We need to work out which ones have actual family videos on
- Kevin Marks
did anyone see the kickstarter project that allows you to avoid ads in a "free" app by collecting the money up front? have you guys already talked about this? maybe the future of advertising...
- Charlie Isaacs
Just got to a desktop and looked at Facebook. I have over 13,000 followers. Clearly I am on a Scoble list.
- Francine Hardaway
I think I might have a 40 megabyte hard drive around... fourty. megabytes.
- Kevin Costain
If soething is popular you can always get it onto a plane
- Christian Burns
@Moe, i disagree, for collaboration its amazing....There are large organizations wasting money on Microsoft word versioning that waste thousands of hours but i do use salesforce products (do.com)
- Matthew Voshell
I have Android angst. Will I blow up on today's call?
- Robert Scoble
@Robert is switching to android like dating a stripper? She looks great but once you find out she sleeps all day and can't stop flirting with guys you realize hose bad of a decision it was? NOT a personal story at all :/
- Matthew Voshell
Heheh. Matthew, it's not quite THAT bad. But the notifications suck. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Android angst? Can't wait to hear what that's all about. And isn't it amazing that while Google Reader will be gone soon Friendfeed is still around?
- Alex de Soto
Yeah. That'll be more interesting with Google Glass, but then I'm still partial to Evernote. I don't trust Google as much as I used to.
- Robert Scoble
We could also talk about algorithmic user interfaces (like what Facebook is moving to). That bugged me a lot at first but now I'm very intrigued.
- Robert Scoble
I completely agree Evernote is amazing... when did google try to play catch up and not just be the innovators they are? are they getting TOO big?
- Matthew Voshell
Hmmm, Gillmors can't be reached. Steve is in New York. Tina must be having troubles.
- Robert Scoble
how can you dislike android notifications? dislike some apps for doing them badly, sure (twitter)
- Kevin Marks
I just got back through and Tina is having trouble with one of the machines. Please stand by.
- Robert Scoble
Kevin: all apps suck on 4.2.1 all notifications are single lines and totally useless. Forces a click through which iOS doesn't.
- Robert Scoble
@robert are there not third-party mods to change the notifications?
- Matthew Voshell
Matthew: I don't know. On iOS I don't need to do third-party crap.
- Robert Scoble
@Robert yea true.. so you're saying apple got something right?!?!
- Matthew Voshell
Yup. But Apple sucks because of the keyboard. Android, er, SwiftKey, is far superior for me.
- Robert Scoble
Danny Sullivan: please stand by. Tina is experiencing technical difficulties.
- Robert Scoble
@Robert What about google voice dictation? I use the google search app on my iPhone 100% of the time.. and i know it's builtin to the keyboard as well?
- Matthew Voshell
Matthew: voice is a wash. Google is better at some things, Apple better at others.
- Robert Scoble
have you done the pull to expand thign on notifications
- Kevin Marks
2-finger pull down on any one give you the same UX as the top one
- Kevin Marks
Kevin: yes. That just expands groups, like Gmail, into multiple messages. All single lines.
- Robert Scoble
@panel... I've been saying this forever... why dont you guys do this on a broadcasted google+ hangout?
- Matthew Voshell
Matthew: we should. If I ran this I would do that.
- Robert Scoble
I need to give Scoble my tweet notification app.
- Kevin Marks
Robert, you should ask Danny about his multi-device activity tracking. We're both doing this right now. I'm testing 4 activity trackers simultaneously right now Nike Fuelband, Jawbone Up, Fitbit One and Bodymedia Armband http://lifestreamblog.com/bodymed...
- Mark Krynsky
I'm using the Logitech keyboard for the mini. They ship quickly from Logitech. It's great but can't use a protective case for the back with it.
- Alex de Soto
But how does instagram pay off for young kids when they go to get a job in 10 years?!?! haha
- Matthew Voshell
Yea i think for events, organizations, these social networks are amazing... but for personal life? just building a case to not get a job or be trusted :/
- Matthew Voshell
Robert: Will kids run away from the contextual or embrace it?
- Alex de Soto
Alex: for a couple of years. Why? Price.
- Robert Scoble
But after the glasses get cool enough and cheap enough, we'll see kids use them too. Particularly for sports or concert videos.
- Robert Scoble
@Robert so it goes the way flat screen TV's have? Please tell me we dont become the people from Wall-E :(
- Matthew Voshell
My students (journalism) use Twitter, hate Facebook but still use it. Are amazingly tech illiterate and uncurious. Remember, outside SV, there's a whole other world
- Francine Hardaway
Facebook made the social graph too much the past you were
- clive boulton
Glad to see we aren't talking about SendGrid today.
- Darren
When Google Glass tells us what to do, and Google Cars drive us contextually to where they know we should be, will thinking be obsolete?
- Steven E. Streight
Kevin is at The Creamery in Sf. Oneof the loudest places in SF
- Tina Chase Gillmor
If its cool... does that mean is useful? i dont think they are mutually exclusive.
- Matthew Voshell
Twitter is for very short messages, not real conversations. What does that say about us?
- Steven E. Streight
The kids of the people on this call are NOT normal
- Francine Hardaway
I plan on limiting my kids tech usage growing up; kids nowadays get punish by having to go outside and turn off their xbox's; when i grew up and we were in trouble we WEREN'T aloud outside... :/ This pushes towards childhood obesity... is tech to partly blame?
- Matthew Voshell
Twitter conditions us for short bursts of talk, rather than what we had in blogs, longer communications in depth.
- Steven E. Streight
Matthew: yes. Technology plays a big part in obesity.
- Robert Scoble
Francine - not normal - true. but their friends are and it's the same
- Tina Chase Gillmor
I would agree that I've gained weight due to more time on the PC and eating late at night.
- Steven E. Streight
Maybe part of a bigger conversation regarding trust in cloud services is the bigger issue.
- Mark Krynsky
Hi everyone, just checking in because I miss you all. Am I late? I have been traveling a lot lately :)
- Charlie Isaacs
I have been experimenting with new curation and discovery tools like RebelMouse and Swayy to find stuff to read. I wonder if this type of discovery is going to replace systematic RSS reading of blogs.
- Laura Norvig
Will smart phones and tablets totally replace tower PCs? I doubt it.
- Steven E. Streight
twitter stopped supporting rss and atom because they, at the time, lacked capabilities to handle it
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Syndication is a necessity...regardless of what the technology ever iterates to. I still use RSS and will welcome whatever new technology comes to evolve it.
- Mark Krynsky
Google Reader with RSS was incredible ROI for Google. Not a lot of money for a lot of geek love.
- Kevin Bryan
RSS serves a very relevant B2B purpose (syndication) and there are no relevant alternatives. Until there is it isn't going anywhere. Proprietary APIs are not that.
- Darren
When does "content curation" turn into plagiarism and duplicate content?
- Steven E. Streight
Does google just have the balls to say No? Jobs was renowned for the ability say no.
- Matthew Voshell
Google Plus is not solving any of my information overload problems at all.
- Laura Norvig
Explore on GooglePlus has been demoted in the More tab.
- Steven E. Streight
I know a Government agency that leveraged Google Reader to dynamically parse feeds/information specifically related that Govt. agency. A young innovator built the app to save taxpayers money...oh well.
- Charlie Isaacs
I gain a lot more followers on G+ than on FB, but get more interactions on FB.
- Steven E. Streight
Robert's right. Discovery on G+ is very difficult
- Francine Hardaway
I have been getting incredible value out of a "secret group" nptech community of practice on Facebook lately. The trust in the group (of about 400) ripples out into public facing parts of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn.
- Laura Norvig
It is hard to survive in business without being on LinkedIn
- Charlie Isaacs
Mike: really? Nearly every tech person I've ever messaged is on Facebook. They might not post often, but almost all are there. Except for the weirdos like Dave Winer and Ryan Block. And they are on Twitter.
- Robert Scoble
To private message in G+ I have to go to my Gmail page, get on GTalk and hope the user is active at that moment?
- Steven E. Streight
Sounds interesting Laura. I'd be interested in that nptech group.
- Mark Krynsky
I found my job at Aol through linkedin, it showed me one of my friends that works there and had them submit my resume... boom! Very powerful
- Matthew Voshell
@Steven... yea you are making this more difficult than it needs to be; if you want instant messagin, sure gchat (prop across gmail and google+) or you can post a message only to them;
- Matthew Voshell
long-press the notification to get to the app setting menu to diabel that apps ones
- Kevin Marks
Tina, your job is secure ... I think
- Laura Norvig
I wonder if the average non-geeky user of G+ understands how to private message someone on G+ though....
- Steven E. Streight
I'm not "making it too difficult", I'm advocating better usability and intuitive functionality for average users of G+.
- Steven E. Streight
it's located directly below your "posting" section where it says "who do you want to share this with?" and you select either all people, a couple circles, or a couple people. It allows targeted "messaging" in a powerful way... just no one is on there to send it to ha :/
- Matthew Voshell
Yea, i NEVER post on linkedin really... I just see who' changing jobs and connected to people i'd like to keep tabs on for future job searches
- Matthew Voshell
Tech people seem to be very active on LInkedIn status updates. You have to click on Home to see the updates. Notifications are not implemented on your LI profile...?
- Steven E. Streight
Instead of autoposting, I do copy and paste, then make sure no truncation issues exist.
- Steven E. Streight
A smart phone would only fetch notification when the phone is slightly moving. If it's been sitting still on the counter for 30 minutes, why update notifications.
- Murray Macdonald
FBs convolutions likely due to MySQL under pinning, they really need a big graph database
- clive boulton
Android apps CANNOT modify or read the notifications as this would be a major security hole.
- Murray Macdonald
Im not using Foursquare that much. People dont need to know how many freaking times I'm at Home Depot
- Tina Chase Gillmor
@Murray: I often set my phone on my desk for hours at a time, but still want notifications.
- John Mann
Speaking of Roku, i got the Roku 3... The headhone port on the remote is AMAZING... my wife is much happier with me :) But it has crashed twice in 3 days :/
- Matthew Voshell
Kevin: That's what the notification interface supports, but you can't create any alternative to it, nor can an app read notifications as this would be a huge security hole.
- Murray Macdonald
I got a Roku 3 too just for the Time Warner app which now enables me to return the HD Cable box I've been renting from them.
- Mark Krynsky
Tina, Home Depot should give you a kickback now.
- Laura Norvig
If GoogleGlass can alert you to a mugger approaching, by criminal record context, and what kind of weapon he has -- that would be useful.

Occulus Rift is what I want to try :)
- Mark Krynsky
That means it won't work in the sun, unless it is shaded like ski goggles.
- Murray Macdonald
it seems like seeing through it would be distracting to the way the brain processes stuff. Harder to read.
- Laura Norvig
someone tell Robert that he needs to drive 3 hours East to use thos
- Charlie Isaacs
Will Google Glass recognize facially someone you look at and link to their profile pages?
- Steven E. Streight
It's called google glass. see Steve... you want one.
- Murray Macdonald
@Laura not unless you want the heaphone jack to stream without bothering people; otherwise the new OS, which the new global serach is brilliant, will get pushed down to the older roku's soon enough;
- Matthew Voshell
there were so many product placements on this show. Sponsors, baby!
- Laura Norvig
Each one logs a different number of steps and different functions Mark, and none of them gives you actionable intelligence other than "do more." This is data, not information
- Francine Hardaway
Robert: Carry an extra battery that fits IN your phone.
- Murray Macdonald
I carry a Mophie and my Ford Sync charges my phone en route
- Francine Hardaway
I've been through 3 Mophie packs, the USB connector is very fragile
- Charlie Isaacs
Francine, there is definitely compelling stories about people getting competitive about their steps, though. Louis Gray is a fanatic. I think he cheats, though.
- Laura Norvig
Francine: I ran four marathons in high school so get that too.
- Robert Scoble
Francine, I can draw some interesting correlations and value from the reporting I get but I agree it can get better and I'm seeing some aggregation services that are starting to draw more actionable information as well.
- Mark Krynsky
Murray: yeah, solar doesn't work most days in half moon bay.
- Robert Scoble
Solar works great. I have a 6sqft solar power charging a 12v car battery. If I run it all the way down it takes two sunny days or four not-so-sunny days to recharge it.
- Murray Macdonald
Have a good weekend. Lots of fun. Chat room was rocking, too!
- Robert Scoble
Or we could talk about my drunken escapades at SXSW.
- Robert Scoble
Samsung? Did they do something this week? lol, that Radio City show was really cheesy!
- Tom Guarriello
Or we could talk about the death of Google Reader.
- Robert Scoble
Or we could talk about Facebook's new News Feed.
- Robert Scoble
No Google Reader jokes! I'm still in mourning...
- Tom Guarriello
Or we could just sit around and stare at each other. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Tom: I stopped using it in 2009. You gotta come into the future eventually. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Actually, as long as Reeder survives, I'll be fine.
- Tom Guarriello
I tell ya the new Facebook news feed blows away most things for me now. Can't wait for everyone to get it.
- Robert Scoble
You're funny, Robert. I can't do the research I to do with all that noise on Twitter, etc. I've got plenty of filters with lists, etc., but nothing beats reading those feeds in one place. At least not for me.
- Tom Guarriello
Tom: the Flipboard Cover Stories does that for me. That is getting better and better.
- Robert Scoble
But Facebook's new news feed is definitely eating into my reading time. By the way, you try Prismatic? That's rocking too.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: So with such a terrible Samsung launch are you still going to switch? Does anyone care that the launch sucked when it comes to buying the phone?
- Michael Roberts
Finished setting up my just.me profile, Keith.
- Tom Guarriello
So, the breathing is too loud, but the potato chip crunching is hunky-dory?!
- Evan Prodromou
Or you talk about how all these fake viral videos (like the recent pepsi ad) are getting tiresome. How long before people get tired of it and the hit count drops.
- Michael Roberts
Google glass is a great toy right now, but I suspect it will take a gen. 2 before I'd drop a real phone.
- Michael Roberts
Robert: I don't get it, do you have a special eyeglass lenses prescription for the Google Glass?
- Nir Ben Yona
Samsung did that last year with with their WiFi direct photo sharing...
- Murray Macdonald
When you consider that the Nexus 4 requires no contract, the competition gets even stronger.
- Murray Macdonald
I suspect apple will catch up on all the specs, but the problem for apple (at least in Canada) is android phones are cheaper in terms of plans than apple, and as Robert says google glass connecting better with android phones matters.
- Michael Roberts
I think the technology is advancing so fast, features are not as important as carriers, ecosystem, and connectivity to other devices. For now I'll stick with apple, but in a year maybe if google glass matures, and one cannot easily connect to google glass with an iphone, maybe getting android might matter.
- Michael Roberts
the better screen changes all the time, today samsung, tomorrow apple, next week, someone else. It will ebb and flow all the time. I agree with Gillmor.
- Michael Roberts
Apple could make an iPod Touch Maxi. 6 inch screen
- Moe Glitz
from iPhone
I'd never swtich to Android because of Samsung, I'd switch because android's ecosystem becomes so strong with their google apps and glass integration. google apps and glass would be the only reason I'd switch away from an iphone, never for the phone itself which to date has never been as slick as anything apple has created.
- Michael Roberts
Having joined late, I apologise if you've discussed this topic, but what's your take on Samsung trying to move away from Google Android? Yesterday, it felt like Samsung is building dependence on Samsung branded software, so when they are ready with Tizen (or other alternative), they can switch without damage.
- Petr Faitl
Motorola will release one that size soon too
- Kevin Marks
Kevin: And so does the Sony Xperia T.
- Nir Ben Yona
not even google thinks motorola is building competitive phones
- Ludwig Ederle
Murray: I agree, but I think like many who have invested in Apple, it would take something like a google glass to be the tipping point. Clearly that's the case for Robert.
- Michael Roberts
Still waiting for the 7" Samsung Note
- Frank Paynter
Is there a Google product that has changed the game as much as Android in the last decade? In fact, since Google Search?
- Evan Prodromou
Nice that Dan is back in the tech fold but his bandwidth needs help ;-)
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Keath: I agree. I think if google really started to tightly integrate their apps with android, glass etc. the way apple does, I think would be amazing.
- Michael Roberts
The Smartphone Market has peaked. Rubin knows this

from iPhone
Michael: Android already runs on your desktop if you install the emulator.
- Murray Macdonald
you can apparently run android on the chromebook pixel
- Kevin Marks
They're hedging. Why bet the farm on one platform?
- Murray Macdonald
Murray: I guess what I'm saying is why have an emulator at all. If you notice IOS and OSX more and more they look the same to the point where IOS is changing OSX more than the other way around. The same strategy could apply for google.
- Michael Roberts
Heads up display like the US military aviators have used for a couple of decades needs to find its way into the marketplace. So it goes.
- Frank Paynter
Having touch on the Chromebook Pixel is not competing with MS; it's just covering holes, and making sure bases are covered. You don't want someone else sneaking up on you and delivering a nice touch laptop experience and leave you in the cold.
- Kevin Bryan
These OS are just front-ends to the cloud. The cloud is stickier than a front-end client. Clients and client OSs will come and go while gmail and other cloud apps will persist.
- Murray Macdonald
These cloud/HTML only machines are VERY secure. They may find a market in the enterprise.

Compute in the cloud is the only way to do Computer Vision and Machine Learning for the next 5 years.

Right now, Apple is chasing Market Gaps in their Product Range. Bigger Smartphone Screens. Mini Tablets. Budget Overseas Phones. Tim Cook is taking Apple back to the pre Steve Jobs era, too many splintered products

Keith: I agree, and the trend seems to be this UX experience is getting to be incredibly important.

I agree with Dan that this is beginning of the wearable computing. Apple will respond to Google at some point as well as others. The question is how far ahead is Google?
- Michael Roberts
I'm interested in Google Glass. But really dont know what it's going to be like in praticum
- Tina Chase Gillmor
I'm crying nerd tears for Google Reader right now. I use it every day!
- Kevin Bryan
It probably won't understand me any more than Siri does
- Francine Hardaway
We used eye-tracking to shut down kiosk displays when people look away 4 years ago. Also shut down the screen if someone was looking over your shoulder.
- Murray Macdonald
Focusing on Google Reader simply to consume feeds is short-sighted. There are 6,142 recipes on IFTTT.com right now https://ifttt.com/recipes... and many other people use it as plumbing for other functionality.
- Mark Krynsky
anyone publish/curate using scoop.it ??
- Frank Paynter
Activity Streams would be a welcome reboot Kevin.
- Mark Krynsky
Open sourcing or cloning of the Google Reader API that becomes distributed would be nice too.
- Mark Krynsky
Filtering and machine learning can solve that problem. You need to merge RSS, Email, Social Streams, SMS into a single filtered feed.
- Murray Macdonald
the mobile devices have higher res screens than the laptops we were using in 20005
- Kevin Marks
Smaller niche blogs will suffer. My blog still gets much referral traffic from Reader and Feedburner
- Mark Krynsky
Smart filtering needs to be a cloud service, not something managed by each respective feed. We all need to merge our feeds into a single targeted feed.
- Murray Macdonald
Flipboard is great to read, but I can't sort through 150+ news articles at a glance in Flipboard. Only Google Reader.
- Kevin Bryan
Everything is pushing us small bloggers away...
- Mark Krynsky
Feeds and SEO are becoming less important and becoming good at finding how to promote through social media has become critical so that you are funneled into the "new" news feed.
- Mark Krynsky

- Tina Chase Gillmor
Good. That way people can write their own filters.

Something not working with Twitter? That's truly surprising considering they are the most reliable service on the net.
- Bjorn Stromberg
i log into twitter and start following a user - cool. i go to FF and try to set up an imaginary friend (enter name, select twitter service, enter twitter name click "import twitter" and BAM: "We could not find the given account" whoever is causing this, it sux and needs to stop.
- MikeAmundsen
interesting. I saw that a bunch of tweets seemed to come into FF 30 minutes late yesterday. I wonder if this is part of a strategy on Twitter's part to disrupt Twitter service within FF in order to undermine the competition without coming out and taking the heat for publicly pulling the API from them. I hope not.
- Thomas Hawk
Figures the day I finally give in to starting a FF page and I can't wire up my Twitter account.
- Tina Chase Gillmor
We're running into some rate limiting issues, but I'm working with Twitter to get them fixed. I just put out a work-around for now, so you should be able to add your Twitter account now. Sorry for the difficulty.
- Paul Buchheit
Same issue for me. It says "We could not find the given account" when I want to add the Twitter account...
- HDG Ticaret
i am able to add one of my twitter accounts with password, but not another. the second one i still get an error account not found. this sucks.

• A provisional filed before the deadline can secure a filing date, but the prior art searches are based on the rules at the time of the non-provisional application. That means that before the deadline, searches are subject to USPTO rules and after the deadline, searches are subject to ROW rules. ROW rules vastly broadens the search for prior art.

Apple need to release something that is much more than a boring TV. It needs to be an iScreen. Come in 4 sizes. Super thin, with Gestures, Siri and AirPlay controls. Apple TV installed, with iOS, FaceTime and the App Store. This iScreen would not only be for the sitting room, but also Shops, Schools, Businesses, Hospitals, Museums, Hotels, etc

My next patent filing will be "restroom jammer"; it will render Google Glass unusable in restrooms. It will be called "Method and Apparatus for Shielding Private Objects"
- Charlie Isaacs
Email was the universal push notifications center. People didn't much like that either.

You don't need to have millions of notifications to keep up to date. I think it's more destracting than helpful to have all these notifications, including the daughter requests

The biggest thing is HARDWARE. Google Glass Version 1 is going to be old within two years. What will glass generation 3 look like? The app ecospace will evolve, hardware less so. We get stuck with deployed hardware for years. Look at old android devices in the market. Apple could take glass market share with new sensors like eye tracking.

The form factor gets locked in. Even with an open-source device push notifications lock it down. Until we have 3rd party push notifications on platforms, they will hold their users tight...
- Murray Macdonald
But, where does Apple go? What could they possibly do?
- Kevin Costain
Robert is right. Context knowledge is important, but it can be learned and transferred. Imagine if users intentionally entered or set their context. Then Facebook/google's unique knowledge becomes less important. If users start being willing to establish or publish their context(s) this whole context landscape will change. We should write an open context standard. The big vendors will try to avoid it...
- Murray Macdonald
The problem is that, while magical products can be made - boring products can be iterated well to become magical. I see lts of things like that. The Gillmore Gang has to get peace from chasing that magical new-ness

Email is kinda like the canvas. Its lets people and companies build on top on it. like google does with its spam filters, or labels or just about whatever you can imagine. no one company owns the protocols and they are widely adopted. As you can see with Twitter, as soon as they feel threatened they reduce the ability to share. email is just a protocol.

Android (through Google TV) already has exposed the Google app marketplace to STB's on our TV's. It's beyond me why Apple hasn't done the same. They're giving Google way too much time to perfect and gain usage there.

That's not true... New Androids have GPUs. Everyone does things in hardware. They abandon their old devices, like PowerPC, and iPhone3, etc... The 3GS will get dropped soon.
- Murray Macdonald
Androids do have GPUs, but Apple's AV chain is good work
- Kevin Marks
Apple also has momentum. Steve is right about services and Keith. As well I think Apple will innovate more on software in the coming months. Its just people have come to expect incredible hardware innovation from Apple, but I agree Apple will optimize more on its software working with its hardware, and sometimes that isn't immediately visible to everyone the way a new hardware product like the iphone might be.
- Michael Roberts
It's the fragmentation of Android hardware. They have various GPUs in different devices. You have to write to the various GPUs.
- Murray Macdonald
Apple has one, Android hundreds, "choice" or "fragmentation"
- Ludwig Ederle
My guess is that the inherent way that Apple controls OS (and perhaps direct sensors) access may limit it to compete with the features other mobile devices will be able to utilize for Robert's "contextual" or quantified self and digital health features that will be coming.

Robert: Good point. Apple is a smart company however. I don't expect them to go into a innovation drought for long, but yes, they have a poor record on social IMHO and they should be get aggressive on contextual now. Waze would have been a good move for them I agree.

The question is where can developers properly leverage GPUs. Android allows you access to the GPU which apple GPU is pre-baked into things like the browser and OS but is not as accessible to developers.

Surely the arguement really comes down to the type of App. If you are building a chat app that needs background services HTML5 is really the wrong way. A simple timetable, perhaps HTML5.

Simon: HTML5 supports Web Workers that allow background services.
- Murray Macdonald
Charlie, yeah I thought maybe I should explain myself as Steve looked perplexed.
- Tina Chase Gillmor
the crossfade and zoom on my nexus 7 on beta.just.me is looking very smooth

Simon: Most HTML5 app developers are using phonegap, giving their apps the same backgrounding capabilities as any app. In a browser you're right, but in an hybrid (phonegap) HTML5 app that's not the case.

Machine learning should learn what's right for you. The problem is that we rely on cloud vendors (fb, etc...) to learn for us. We should have client tools that are smarter than the cloud, but the market hasn't made them popular. I want machine learning to learn across my channels.
- Murray Macdonald
spam on stack overflow is language religiosity
- Kevin Marks
@Kevin Yes. And religiosity of many flavors.
- Kurtiss Hare
that whole maintenance and replication of a twitter thread on Friendfeed was very cool. I don't think it even works anymore, though.
- Laura Norvig
opinions are not spam, we only consider opinions we disagree with spam.
- Murray Macdonald
Are there any good social media platforms for discussion aside from quick comments. I've not yet seen discussions better than on mailing lists from the 90's. But now even mailing list culture is changing into lists of people sharing links only. There is lots of noise, but it seems less rich and thoughtful dialogue.
- Michael Roberts
But everyone will never be on all of them, right?
- Kurtiss Hare
I do avoid some of them to a certain extent because the time suck is unbearable. I go where I get the most engagement (whether for work or personal use).
- Laura Norvig
Actually really hard to control it. I need an autonomous one...
- Kevin Marks
FB have a data monopoly. Twitter doesn't have much user data such as likes.
- Murray Macdonald
is the stream only for me a nightmare today?
- Ludwig Ederle
Robert: Quora I think works if you have a one off question, but for rich dialogue around a topic that ongoing over years, I'll have to follow many many threads. There isn't just one place. That can be a good thing, but I have search for the active thread. Laurabrarian: Yes, I agree Google plus is starting to show promise with their communities.
- Michael Roberts
They traded anti-trust for providing the feds with access to private user data, just like MS did years ago.

Apple doesn't have anyone left to say NO to big projects. That NO is what made a great company magical. Robert is dead on.
- Kevin Bryan
The *real* post-Jobs Apple is not one that's reeling from the void he left behind. Which is why Steve is right when he says Jobs' death is overstated.
- Kurtiss Hare
iOS has too many restrictions. They should Open Source it. They remind me of Adobe missing the chance to open source Flex before HTML5 got legs.
- Murray Macdonald
Google design getting better is very relative ... it's not *that* hard to get better when a lot of your UI is not so hot. I hope they continue the trend (if there is one), but I'm not holding my breath.
- Laura Norvig
Google figured out how to make great design with many designers. Apple hasn't figured this out. If they don't have one person saying yes or no, they either need to get that person or change their culture. They haven't done either of those things, so they drift, and Robert is right.
- Kevin Bryan
didn't realise there was a video in that report, read it on my phone
- Kevin Marks
Apple isn't grabbing as much attention or innovation at the pace it was, but its ecosystem is so strong that any improvement or new product that is interesting will create a lot of purchases and attention. .. yes indeed. Steve. I agree air play of part of the ecosystem
- Michael Roberts
Google has continuity issues though.. I'm sad they forget products and dont extend the design cues to all of them.. picasa?
- Matthew Voshell
FLASH is alive and well on iOS, just not in the browser.
- Murray Macdonald
Google has a very messy ecosystem. Its easy to get lost in all their products and services. Apple is much better at tying things together. I think this will continue to give Apple an advantage overall.
- Michael Roberts
there's a lot of people who _hate_ Apple and Macs

Too many algorithms are still like companies and they need to be more like industries.

ooh, is it my affordable robotic assistant that cleans, cooks, and runs all my errands?

The likelyhood of something big happening if you don't specify it, is huge. P2P could explode. BTLE sensors could explode.
- Murray Macdonald
Jerome: we had TONS of signal that something huge was coming at that announcements.
- Robert Scoble
part of what is interesting is that the startup culture is so broad based now that new innovations might not come out of Silicon Valley, but maybe in Africa, or South Asia.
- Michael Roberts
It's amazing the Google gets all the glasses hype when Vuxiz already makes Android glasses. It reminds me of MS announcing their CRM 3 years before it was ready to scare off competition.
- Murray Macdonald
Something something something Robert is right. :)
- Kevin Bryan
Robert: Agreed. But sideways oriented? Like cameras, we'll see forward and user facing 3D cameras before 360 squared.
- Murray Macdonald
Google Project Glass is looking great. It’s a move towards technology that disappears in the background, until I want it. Countless times, I wanted to take pictures, shoot videos, dictate text, make calls, look up information, etc.- but where’s that darn phone? then, I have look down to touch some glass slab
- Da
John: yes indeed. In the age of context, health care innovation should be quite amazing. like predictive models of when you might have a heart attack if you don't change your diet, based against a control model.
- Michael Roberts
All we know is that we will be surprised. Black swan baby...
- Murray Macdonald
why didn't you go to Davos, Robert ... was it so you could stay home for Mavericks?
- Laura Norvig
@Da -- looking down at the glass slab very noticeable in midtown NYC
- clive boulton
Mavericks rocks! I decided to go to Midem. in France.

"Web 2.0 was created so that people could publish cute photos of their cats. But this same cat dissemination technology has proved extremely helpful for activists, who’ve turned these tools to their own purposes." - Ethan Zuckerman (http://www.ethanzuckerman.com/blog...)
: ) - "Twitter lets Robert Scoble tell me what he’s doing 200 freaking times a day… but it also lets me know whether Egyptian activists have been released from the police station when they go in for questioning."

Zuckerberg made three claims about graph search :
- Euro Maestro
You can do some of that through Google+ friends and search...if only more people used Plus.
- christina sponselli
1. Graph Search was not about searching the web 2. was not targeted at Google 3. and there were no immediate plans to make money from it.
- Euro Maestro
I'm getting over 100 reshares, 100 comments and 100 likes on my google plus posts on average, that's much more activity than I get in fb and twitter, so google doesn't have the audience yet but they have an audience that is much more active and much more responsive, surely that has some value
- Euro Maestro

There's a new app that knows exactly when a car owner returns back into his vehicle and about to leave his parking lot. The app informs everyone around about the new available parking, while helping them out in finding the place.

3D face recognition will enable unprecedented recognition accuracies. When you're recognized by a 3D camera in public, device issues will be moot.
