i think curved look of iphone 6 will lead to a lot of dropped phones - Chris Hale
before any rebuttles , I don't believe phones should have cases. - Chris Hale
The watch is pretty nice looking: http://www.apple.com/watch... Yes, it can be better. - Robert Scoble
Question; How does Apple make money with Apple Pay? - Kevin Costain
@kevin, they don't - Chris Hale
its more for the user experience for paying for things as a tactic to immerse you further into the ecosystem - Chris Hale
@chris - how would you protect the you $800 investment without a case? - Kevin Costain
I have been a huge fan of the new generation of glass screen protectors. - Chris Hale
I am unafraid of scuffing up the back of the device. I would rather a thin/pocketable device than a thick device that sticks to my pocket and makes it very uncomfortable to walk around with - Chris Hale
The lack of commentary on watch battery life - what does that mean? - Josh Bradshaw
Kevin: by selling you a new phone and watch. I can just see something like "At the Olympics you can use an Apple Watch to Pay but you can't use Moto 360." - Robert Scoble
The thing is, these devices are becoming worse for scratches. i look at the Apple Watch.. and in a week I see that thing scratched to shit. - Kevin Costain
well luckily the bands look replacable - Chris Hale
I think the watch screen is sapphire i think. - Chris Hale
Ahh.. Scoble.. exclusivity. - Kevin Costain
Apple can make money on Apple pay - Tony Stanislawski
Kevin: fashion. :-) - Robert Scoble
Robert, i think the whole apple pay eco system wont have exclusivity for contactless payment for very long. I am guessing android will catch up quick. - Chris Hale
Also, no commentary on Watch battery life and almost no commentary on any sort of waterproofing. - Kevin Costain
Hope Tim Cook ate his hat, by mocking Android a year or so ago... 'bumping phones together, is silly, try ibeacons'... Still waiting for ibeacons to make major inroads... - Petr Faitl
I think the direction they are steering the ship will shift the whole industry in the right direction . I think the announcements today have finally solidified the movement to NFC as the next generation payment platform - Chris Hale
Anybody else notice they didnt mention any specs at all on the Watch today? - Chris Hale
or did i miss that part of the choppy video? - Chris Hale
Paywave from Visa uses NFC - http://www.visa.ca/en... - is Apple Pay going to plug right into this ecosystem with little or no change? - Kevin Costain
Chris: specs don't matter. But there are plenty on the Internet. - Robert Scoble
It was nice to see a return to the positive Apple focused on its products, rather than trying to slam others. - Ian McGee
we are bad at remembering history - Tony Stanislawski
@Tony .. WTF.. ? haha - Kevin Costain
Robert, I agree about specs in this category not really being that important but battery life and wifi and a few other things would have been helpful - Chris Hale
Today was a 'me too' day for apple. 'Unparallel' it was not. 2 iPhones is about sticking more SKUs into the market place trying to crowd it out. - Petr Faitl
@Chris - that was on purpose. If they offered those specs, that watch would look even worse. - Kevin Costain
there were a few things i really didnt like on the watch. The circular icons with differerent sizes and colors made the watch look like the screen had a weird lookin chicken pox look to it - Chris Hale
Is Scoble still getting the watch? - Tina Chase Gillmor
I want to know more about the walkie talkie feature - Tony Stanislawski
Who wants to bet the next Ipad will have NFC built into it and will possibly be a competitor to Square and other credit card readers - Chris Hale
For a company the made devices (iPhones) that contributed to us abandoning watches, why would they make a phone? - Kevin Costain
Yes. - Robert Scoble
I keep writing phone when I mean watch.. haha. - Kevin Costain
Taptic - Ian McGee
taptic engine - Chris Hale
Hiya - Ian Waring
"Not a content creation device!" - Kevin Costain
I wonder if passbook can be used legally for driver license - Tony Stanislawski
@Tony, not yet but I wonder how long it will take state goverments to adopt phones for ID's - Chris Hale
Square was quick to jump on Apple Pay support - had a story up on Hacker News right after the presentation - Ian McGee
Thing that got me was the infra red sensors under the watch. One of their hires is a specialist at measuring blood sugar levels using a non invasive, infrared sensor on the skin surface - Ian Waring
what was the synopsis @Ian? - Chris Hale
And, with fines going up for in-car phone use - what does this mean for driving with a connected Apple Watch? - Kevin Costain
Bluetooth between the Watch & iPhone? - J.C. Bouvier
@JC probably - Chris Hale
I wonder if this means American express will be in more places if it is your default card - Tony Stanislawski
The watch apparently senses some of its context, lighting up when the wrist is lifted. It also opens up a lot of contextual applications, now we know the location but we also know the heart rate when someone is in an experience. - Josh Bradshaw
It's actually really personal. This morning I was describing watch to a non-techie friend and as soon as I told about 'Haptic notifications' which I described as 'feels like a tap on wrist to notify you', I could see the excitement in eyes regarding the ideas popping about what normal person would like to use it in personal context.. - Satyajit
2 lines in the API gives Apple Pay support through Stripe (not Square sorry). Pitch was if you support Stripe now, it's trivial to support AP by iOS 8 launch. Decent strategy I thought. - Ian McGee
Wow, just found out you guys were here! - Tom Guarriello
@Tony, that is awesome... - J.C. Bouvier
I wonder if this canabalizes apples in app purchase platform. - Chris Hale
Apple has the money too to get these into stores - Tony Stanislawski
I am hoping it does. I really hated how apple has handled in app purchases or subscriptions or payments - Chris Hale
Would like to see some sleep monitoring for a comprehensive health offering from the watch but didn't see anything on that. My guess is it has to charge every night. - Josh Bradshaw
Certainly has a retail footprint to help drive it...and if banks see the value in the increased security of TouchID, they'll drive adoption...and Apple indeed may have just cornered the market on payments... - J.C. Bouvier
@Josh, i found a really cool device on kickstarter i backed recently that I really think is a good solution for sleep monitoring. - Chris Hale
@ChrisHale do share - Josh Bradshaw
I really, really like the concept of this device. I think it can do stuff like record audio when it detects sound at a certain threshold - Chris Hale
Taptic...brilliant new word - Tom Guarriello
With the demo they said it can store music, etc - Tony Stanislawski
The other thing they said is the App developers can push the processing and reduce the power used on the watch to the phone... - Tony Stanislawski
Who here will be shelling out $349 for the Apple wristwatch? - Tina Chase Gillmor
Hand raised here, Tina - Tom Guarriello
349 for watch and more for straps.. :) - Satyajit
At this point - No chance I'll buy the Apple watch. I'm in for the 4.7' iPhone 6 - Kevin Costain
Not me. I have a decent multi-sport watch and it suits me much better. - Petr Faitl
Only 48% of iPhone users have a phone that will support the watch, so for most it will be much more than $349 - Murray Macdonald
@Satyajit $749 for the gold version :) - Kevin Costain
I dont know if i am going to buy one . I am a developer and I kinda think i will probably have to buy one either way. - Chris Hale
Actually, I know I'm in for 2 - Tom Guarriello
I imagine the sports band is most economical - Tina Chase Gillmor
Most of that money is offshore... - Ian McGee
Things may change until the watch is released. They may change this product drastically. Make it more compelling. - Kevin Costain
Wow, Benedict made a phenomenal point - Chris Hale
The music labels HATE iTunes, so the Film Industry may be extra cautious about licensing to Apple. - Murray Macdonald
I think it wont take long at all for Android wear to make a wearable that competes really well with this watch - Chris Hale
@Benedict whilst that might be the case (at the moment), shareholders might be looking at Apple to bring more revenue and it might be the next logical step to go. Virgin was once a record selling company... - Petr Faitl
Anybody look at the apple video today and think that this payment platform will put a ginormous dent in Paypal? - Chris Hale
Those rights are enormously expensive, Keith - Tom Guarriello
Credit Card transactions cost a percentage of sales. Bank Card transactions cost $0.10 In countries other than the US (Canada and Europe) we've had secure Chip-And-Pin transactions for many years. Most purchases are made using Bank Cards, not Credit Cards. - Murray Macdonald
I think I want to get a watch. I want to experience how the form-factor works with me. I want to see what's missing, and where my imagination takes me after the experience - Tina Chase Gillmor
@Chris there certainly are folks at Paypal who would have spent the afternoon discussing precisely that. This is a challenge in the space they are trying to maintain control of and build out. - Josh Bradshaw
@Tina, your imagination is going to take at least $349 out of your pocket :) - Kevin Costain
Me too, Tina. It's a new category. I have a Pebble and it was pretty disappointing. I want to see what Apple does with the device. - Tom Guarriello
U2 is over - Tom Guarriello
Interesting it was Eddy Cue that presented the Apple Pay stuff. Signs that Beats likely is taking over the music side. - Ian McGee
I'm with you Tina, want it. Want it the first day. - Josh Bradshaw
@Kevin $749!!! :O but yea if it's available, though strap choice would be limited, can't pair gold with metal strap.. .:) - Satyajit
Read Lefsetz on this U2 appearance http://lefsetz.com/wordpre... - Tom Guarriello
I love the metal watch bands ( I think) but Im sure I'll start with the low end - Tina Chase Gillmor
@josh I very rapidly envision a world where i can touch my watch or my phone to a friends phone or watch and seamlessly and securely give them money. Since credit card and bank companies compete on features like purchase protection or fraud prevention i feel like the usefuleness of what solution paypal used to fit is negated in a real big way - Chris Hale
@Tina I want a metal one for going out and I want one for fitness. - Josh Bradshaw
@Chris, outside the US you can do it with your phone, no touchy feely needed. @Scoble can do it in Australia. Loved that when I lived there. - Josh Bradshaw
I think this the first time that the highest-end iPhone isn't going to be the best seller. - Kevin Costain
I wrote a quick blog article today about my thoughts on the Iphone 6 and one of the things i thought about that was really cool was the notion of possibly finally getting ATM machines that use NFC for authentication. I can't wait for that transition to occur - Chris Hale
Well said, Keith - Tom Guarriello
I also had the thought that i would like to have a nice band - that the clasping area is cool because I can see that I might wear my watch facing the inside of my wrist. you know, where you turn to look at the watch face on the inside of your wrist - Tina Chase Gillmor
Do share @Chris - Kevin Costain
$299 iPhone 6 w/64GB is the sweet spot for sure... - J.C. Bouvier
I wonder if the 16 GB iPhone 6 will have so little memory that it's unusable? - Kevin Costain
Here it is. Its just a humble nerds first reaction. Please ignore the rest of the site for now, I havent had time to clean it up http://ninjaenterprises.net/apple-i... - Chris Hale
Ha ha... - J.C. Bouvier

@kevin, id love to here your thoughts on my brief little article. I am just starting to blog and if people like the content, i will probably start doing articles more frequently - Chris Hale
No worries @Chris. I will get back to you on that. I'm also a blogger, so I know where your coming from I did the same today regardign the event: https://cwl.cc/2014... - Kevin Costain
@Chris Hale NFC for ATM is quite unlikely. I cannot see the banks allowing this to be used for more than the current NFC tech, i.e. small purchases up to $80-$100. - Petr Faitl
Thanks @kevin. - Chris Hale
@Petr, I feel like with the problems with card skimmers and now flir infrared able to read finger presses on atm machines, the banks need to step up security on ATM's in a big way. You could be totally right that banks wont have this tech on ATM's but I have already seen atm makers experiment with things like QR codes for 2nd factor auth on ATM's - Chris Hale
But honestly this is all just me theorizing use cases for this technology. Time will tell what ends up happening - Chris Hale
Great show tonight! Gotta head out. Very lively debate! - Chris Hale
So, first.. the one thing designers always bitch to me about. "The font is too small". I can hear a designer saying that about your blog. I like your point about cases and designed phones.. it make sense. And, it bring something new to the discussion. I know you mentioned it here in the chatroom - but if I were reading that for the first time, I'd stop and thin "He's got a point". Oh,... more... - Kevin Costain
@Petr - using a phone + touchID to do small withdrawal transactions would probably aid the bank in cutting losses from skimmers. Phones (apps) are starting to catch on for cheque deposits too. I think the most common ATM transaction has to be a quick, under $100 withdrawal. - Kevin Costain
coda: NFC is the new GSM. - clive boulton

I'd rather see sensors small & implantable (nod to Tina) with local xmitters. - Ian McGee
I wonder if that tech will make it into the smart watches. If it takes me only 10 min. to charge the watch that would be acceptable for me, imho - Chris Hale
This Keynote could be Apple's biggest since Macworld 2007 - Moe Glitz from iPhone
I wouldn't buy a watch that signalled how much money I have. That's crass - Francine Hardaway

Will Apple launch a new iPhone, new iPad Air plus the iWatch on Tuesday. Seems abit crowded - Moe Glitz from iPhone
The big compelling feature for a return to watches has to be health services.. - Kevin Costain
in that context @Ian, I totally agree with you. I see a future where I could use my watch/wearables nfc to do 3 really cool things. 1. I could use it as a payment device (NO MORE CREDIT CARDS). 2. Use it for permiter access (Unlock my doors on my car or my house or safe) . 3. Social interaction (It would become the long awaited business card killer/drink napkin killer) . I cant wait to exchange social info via tapping watches or tapping watches to phones. - Chris Hale

nodejs is still a bit hard to self-host - Kevin Marks
Kevin, why do you think node is hard to self host? - Chris Hale
thats just silly language partisanship, flyinthesoup - Kevin Marks
Kevin, you should never believe it - flyinthesoup
I saw that! TMI - Frank Paynter

Bravos, Dan. Well said! - Dave Martin
Meteor looks good atop node.js - Ian Waring
I was a lead devops engineer at a startup that had some public node sites and it wasnt so tough. It was actually fairly easy. Just install nginx and node and its pretty seamless - Chris Hale
Known needs to be hosted in places that host wordpress, which means MySQL+PHP - Kevin Marks
Chris: yeah, sad to see problems at Cisco, lots of people are being hurt, but that helps startups too, available humans to work. - Robert Scoble
Oh, kevin, that's not right to paint a "silly language partisanship" . This is the DEFACTO standard for ANY modern thinking web app - flyinthesoup
I think it was the Gaza strip folks - Andrew Hazlett
gaza!# - Ian Waring
there are indieweb apps in node too - Kevin Marks
Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard. H. L. Mencken - Andrew Hazlett
Kevin: on desktop collections of Android / iPhone apps vs Polymer components? - clive boulton
I agree @Robert. It affects me since I am a contractor for them. Thankfully the axe hasnt been weilded over my head - Chris Hale

+1 Kevin - Adnan
George Carlin - Ankush Narula
Senor wences - Frank Paynter
@flyinthesoup - Just noticed the thread. CEO / lead developer of Known here. PHP was a pragmatic decision based on research and data. Not arbitrarily chosen. Supported platform is a feature. - Ben Werdmuller
node is quick to get up, but has a lot of immature libraries too - Kevin Marks
Netcraft monitor coverage of PHP sites worldwide for Zend - Ian Waring
Meteor.js on node! - Ian Waring
I love snarcasm - Ankush Narula
Jonathan Winters - christina sponselli
+1 christina - Tom Guarriello
devops luv go hate node - clive boulton
Thanks for ending on a positive note Steve. Louis C.K. is cool. He will step up! - Alex de Soto
@Kevin, I agree about library maturity. On the flip side, I am really digging a lot of the new js and node based tools that are springing up to help make developer workflow easier. Tools like yeoman, gulp and others make development really nice - Chris Hale
Keith - BBC say more people have come forward with more info... - Ian Waring
We're all bozos on this bus, Steve - Tom Guarriello
it seems that devops love ruby more than anything else - Ankush Narula
browserify is attractive too - Kevin Marks
The guy who was mentioning meteor, have you tried sails? Do you have an opinion on one or the other - Chris Hale
call me a "bollocks sayer" and stick with PHP and you'll see what happens to the world - flyinthesoup
No experience of Sails - Ian Waring
PHP was certain doom for Facebook after all - Kevin Marks
i have been teaching myself Sails this week and like its ability to scaffold REST apis really quick - Chris Hale
Awesome show Steve and gang! - Chris Hale

wow.... it was a nice show - Tina Chase Gillmor
Love it when I catch these live. Thanks everyone; awesome as always. - Ben Werdmuller
I find bits of PHP very annoying, but you don't have to use them. - Kevin Marks
i liked it.... seems like all we could think about this week - Tina Chase Gillmor
@kevin, very true. I cheat when i write javascript i use http://php.js when i get pissed that js doesnt have some of php's cooler functions - Chris Hale
@ben, i really appretiate you stepping in and please take my comment as a compliment for your initiative. I am sorry Kevin is talking "bollocks", but i do believe the speed things happen perfectly justifies going for nodejs with ANY indie initiative. - flyinthesoup
this is due to NPM and all the ecosystem of modules and flexible app creation taht comes with it - flyinthesoup
@Kevin, where do you work again? Its cool that you get to work on writing in a bunch of different languages - Chris Hale
I'm independent, and I am advising a few startups (including Known) - Kevin Marks
I think every language has a package manager nowadays @flyinthesoup. PHP=composer, javascript web=bower, node=npm, ruby= gem - Chris Hale
yes @Chris, but we're talking about a single language in front & back end - flyinthesoup
flyinthesoup: I'm happy for you to use node for your projects - i use it form some of mine too. You seem to have a bad case of "golden hammer" syndrome when you insist everyone else should use it too - Kevin Marks
I plan to try some Go next - Kevin Marks
If you want to read me saying nice things about node, try http://epeus.blogspot.com/2012... - Kevin Marks
so @kevin, in what capacity are you advising startups. I am curious because I have a few initiatives I am working on and I know I always need advice on different aspects of things. - Chris Hale
i see you insisting in "TAGGING" me withou arguments on why would anyone build anything that can not be fully explored to become a mobile app as a single page front end app consuming as many APIs people want to and this is not ideology, this is effectivity - flyinthesoup
I'm glad you find it effective. - Kevin Marks
Ben finds PHP effective - Kevin Marks
why is that impossible for you to accept? - Kevin Marks
Great, everyone can respect that, but in fact this is not a matter of finding effective, but being effective. - flyinthesoup
I am most interested in the platforms I can use that let me be the most effective one man development team possible. - Chris Hale
Chris: It varies - sometimes I'll do day rate consulting, sometimes I'll have an ongoing advisory board role (with stock or retainer) email me kevinmarks@gmail.com if you want to chat - Kevin Marks
because it is not wroth it. if you are the one developing it, you'll certainly benefit A LOT. - flyinthesoup
what have you built, flyinthesoup? I'd love to see examples - Kevin Marks
also, Chris indiewebcamp.com/irc is a good place to talk about independent web development - Kevin Marks
Thank for the info @Kevin. Looks like that could be a helpful IRC to watch - Chris Hale
I have been trying for the past few months to work on going 100% independent developer and consultant and realize it is not as easy as I had hoped. - Chris Hale
@Chris, never give up. @Kevin is certainly a very good advisor. Try to balance selling your time to execute other people's work and gather enough experience to build your own. - flyinthesoup
thanks @flyinthesoup. I have been struggling lately to find time to complete work on my own stuff. This is one of the big reasons I am starting to get into node. Anything that can speed up my dev time is a great thing for me to utilize. Work smart , not harder - Chris Hale
Steve Gillmor

Here. - Robert Scoble
im going to watch through the roku ustream private channel i wonder how far delayed ill be - Matthew Voshell
We are gonna talk about two-app strategy for sure. - Robert Scoble
That one above is for you Robert! - Tony Stanislawski
@Robert did you see that tweet i sent to most for the Frontline piece that recently aired? - Matthew Voshell
BTW My little experiment last week, I mentioned all of you in a tweet, only Keith responded. I know that I could have got Scobles attention on FB. Steve G and Kevin not so sure how I would - Tony Stanislawski
I saw it, but as keith had responded i thought I'd be redundant - Kevin Marks
The world is coming to an end. I might as well watch The Gillmor Gang live - Francine Hardaway
Excellent plan, Francine - Tom Guarriello
Got it Kevin - Tony Stanislawski
Tony, do you mean this one? http://www.pbs.org/wgbh... - Rob Underwood
I was thinking of Robert S too when I watched the original - Rob Underwood
No I have not seen that...another thing to watch! - Tony Stanislawski
Matthew, nope. - Robert Scoble
What's up Steve! - Chris Hale
ppl are turnig off push notications (in some categories) http://andrewchen.co/2014... - clive boulton
I will not install fb chat. Don't want it. Same with 4square. - Murray Macdonald
Wow. Robert jumped right in - Chris Hale
Per a story that relates to last weeks show, and what the gang is trying to understand; http://www.pbs.org/wgbh... - Matthew Voshell
Path like 4sq has 2 app strategy - clive boulton
I agree -- the FourSquare/Swarm split feels different than the messenger/FB "split" - Rob Underwood
I love the new FourSquare app, and Messenger is quite useful. I dig that too. Both are very useful. And, the new Messenger features are super sweet! You guys should check it out. - Jason Nunnelley
Can we make the Dock disappear on Robert's screen? - Tom Guarriello
These apps will have to provide value to users. They seem like distractions more than value. I communicate with my friends through other channels (text, voice, email, beer) - Murray Macdonald
I always view myself as the quintessential user, and I will now never use Foursquare and give tips. I used to do it when checking in. - Francine Hardaway
I have too many other ways to find out where to eat - Francine Hardaway
Question, can you be friends in messenger and not on FB yet? - Tony Stanislawski
But I do like and use Messenger - Francine Hardaway
Tony yes - Francine Hardaway
Yelp is my go-to app for food. I don't want people to know where I am eating. - Murray Macdonald
Agree with Robert on separating of FB apps. I think this could be an attempt to improve reputation for individual components of FB - Chris Hale
@Tony, yes, depending on your privacy settings you can control who can message you; either public, friends of friends, firends, or ony me - Matthew Voshell
Max Schrems suite was stirred by a talk from a Facebook privacy lawyer. “The message was, ‘Europeans are cute with their privacy laws... - clive boulton
My sister (reasonably technical) just made the mistake of having a private conversation on a relative's public Facebook feed. I explained the 2-app split and she's on board now. ;-) - Ian McGee
Messenger and the FB strategy are not the same as 4Square and Swarm - Francine Hardaway
whatever happened to the big "skype" integration into facebook chat? seems like they've kinda forgotten about that? - Matthew Voshell
I think instant messaging in general is a ungodly steaming hot mess - Chris Hale
On iOS, the lock screen notifications arent written correctly, i get a single new notification per message... its awful, they need to allow it to do a "count" of messages from the same persons - Matthew Voshell
My wife told me she uninstalled Messenger because of the permission requirements, to which I responded "how are you going to talk to your daughter when she's in Japan?" When in Osaka, my kid only talked to us on Messenger, because it's mobile, desktop, etc. Warren Whitlock called me on the voice calling feature built into Messenger, before I even knew it was there. Cool as hell! - Jason Nunnelley
My parents and many of my 50+ year old friends are not on facebook. Neither are my kids. - Murray Macdonald
Matthew: we can argue about that. I really like the single notifications per message coming in. - Robert Scoble
Yeah, but I see the utility of FB Messenter immediately, but my perception of FOursquare and Swarm is silly - Francine Hardaway
Swarm is getting better and better! - Tony Stanislawski
I still can't figure out the Swarm "nearby plans" -- it would seem weird to just show up in person at someone's plan (e.g., dinner), even if they are friends. - Rob Underwood
I think what they did is underestimate the gamification of it, which everyone loved and they are bringing those back! - Tony Stanislawski
Robert was talking on his fb this week about everyone who is up in arms over the permission stuff. Its just people pontificating about privacy because they have nothing better to get inflamed about. In a contextual age the notion of privacy is a radically different thing than the traditional notion of what privacy is - Chris Hale
Foursquare made a lot of mistakes. - Francine Hardaway
Good work, Tina! - Tom Guarriello
@Robert re: FB messenger chat notification; if i get 10 messages now my entire screen is full and i cant see any of the other messages (unless i scroll) i think having a count like imessage nativly does its much better to scale - Matthew Voshell
LOL Kevin I know who to message now! - Tony Stanislawski
Matthew: I do wish you had a choice. I see value in how you want to use notifications too. - Robert Scoble
Did facebook ever try to buy four square? isnt this a feature they portray in "silicon valley" when hooloui reverse engineerings the same feature as pied piper; facebook just did that wither thier "check-ins" and foursquare is dead just like that - Matthew Voshell
It all comes down to value. Can they generate more value for their users, and in some way extract that value in a form that positively affects the balance sheet? If that answer is yes, do it. - Josh Bradshaw
By leaving a tip are you not really checking in, just not in the present! - Tony Stanislawski
Bingo Kevin! - Tony Stanislawski
Hey @Robert. I had an interesting thought. Maybe these companies are splitting there apps because of a User experience crisis on mobile. Just like a webpage with too much content on it, maybe they are trying to keep there apps focused and uncluttered so people don't feel overwhelmed by an apps complexity - Chris Hale
When I use it I use it in combo with Google and 4sq - Tony Stanislawski
Really easier to type "coffee shop near me" into Google - Francine Hardaway
Worth noting Yelp has/had check-in ... just no one used it that I can tell. - Rob Underwood
As an app developer, I can appreciate how hard it can be to organize all the functions of an app when an app tries to include the "kitchen sink" in there app - Chris Hale
Don't resist FB Messenger, folks. It's worth it. I use it to talk to my friends in London. - Francine Hardaway
oye,,, a few technical weirdnesses today. its always something :-) - Tina Chase Gillmor
yelp reviews are like amazon reviews, take them with a grain of salt; biz owners check thier yelp and want it to look good; there's been stories latly of owners bullying peopel to leave good reviews or chraging for bad ones http://mashable.com/2014... - Matthew Voshell
I have had experiences like the one @Robert described. I think this is a drastically undersold feature of FB. It really has helped me meet up with friends in other towns - Chris Hale
Many Yelp reviews are years old (pre apps era) - clive boulton
FB Messenger is quite useful. especial for a small group chat - Tina Chase Gillmor
I use Google Now all the time. Its contextual awareness is great. - Murray Macdonald
There is only so many Messaging Silo's to invest time in. - Moe Glitz from iPhone
Listening to @Robert all I can think of now is Peter Brady and "Time to Change" - https://www.youtube.com/watch... - Rob Underwood
Change is not hard it is fun! What would life be like without change! - Tony Stanislawski
group chat is key. twitter is dropping the ball there - Kevin Marks
Queue steve and his notification love fest - Matthew Voshell
WhatsApp is the most popular one that friends and family use for Group Chats - Moe Glitz from iPhone
To me, i think a lot of these chat silos will be broken down in IOS 8 once apps can talk to each other. - Chris Hale
How did Facebook Messenger take over what AIM used to own? Why did people switch? - Matthew Voshell
We are using Slack a ton across our development team at Relay now. - Rob Underwood
We love it. - Rob Underwood
yes, Slack is excellent - Keith Adler
Slack rocks. - Robert Scoble
In about two weeks we've moved 80% of our internal communication to Slack .. and it integrates with stuff like Github and JIRA, etc. - Rob Underwood
I have a plane going over sorry - Kevin Marks
yes it integrates with ALL the things - Kevin Marks
Who will acquire Slack. Apple, Facebook, Google or Microsoft - Moe Glitz from iPhone
Twitter SHOULD - Keith Adler
@Moe -- good question. Maybe LinkedIn? - Rob Underwood
I hope none of them - Kevin Marks
Apple or MSFT would bugger it up - Kevin Marks
good point - Keith Adler
Facebook is too off message - Kevin Marks
maybe google, but they'd have channel conflict with plus/hangouts - Kevin Marks
Yahoo is desperate enough. - Murray Macdonald
It's great for our team because it gave a separate notifications stream that would get everyone's attention - Keith Adler
I love learning about new tools from you guys. *runs off to check out Slack* - Laura Norvig
Rob: slack does git, ok, now i'll check out the app - clive boulton
Stewart would not sell to Yahoo again - Kevin Marks
hmm. slack sounds interesting - Chris Hale
Any App that solves problems will always be in the line of fire for the usual suspects - Moe Glitz from iPhone
Remember when Whisper was the buzz? They come, they go... - Murray Macdonald
The searchable database, shared group environment is what's great - Keith Adler
@kevin: any indie concept of app-to-app notifications (yeah on the phone)? - clive boulton
It has put our work messaging in it's own separate channel (important when all the employees are overloaded) - Keith Adler
i used to work for the company that managed the backend for whisper - Chris Hale
webmentions are the indie concept, but not very app-focused - Kevin Marks
Ugh. I only didn't remove Yo because I forgot about it - Francine Hardaway
webmentions - thx - clive boulton
Yo is too small to go to the effort of deleting if it doesn't bug us too much... - Ian McGee
There is easily a Top 20 of major Messaging Apps. It's hard to get into the Top 5 and stay there - Moe Glitz from iPhone
I'm starting to turn off notifications on some apps because I'm being driven nuts by notifications - Francine Hardaway
Yo was awesome for the World Cup...just got a Yo every time a goal was scored. - Tony Stanislawski
I turn of/deny notification on all apps except the social networking apps - Adnan
Yo shows why brogrammers are a stain on silicon valley - Matthew Voshell
what the bejesus is a brogrammer? - Chris Hale
Yo is brogrammers trying to be phatic and just shouting - Kevin Marks
brogrammer is programmer who acts like a frat boy - Kevin Marks
iOS 8 could be the American Bandstand of Messaging Apps - Moe Glitz from iPhone
The device IS the app! Long term, Apple will be the best and most reliable contextual API provider. The hardware is a vehicle for the software. - Richard Hendrix
I blame Aaron Sorkin - Kevin Marks
i'd liken them to Ogar from Revenger of the nerds... that knows javascript - Matthew Voshell
apple is not a great cloud api provider - Kevin Marks
I turn noisy app notifications off / also noisy folks off - clive boulton
@Kevin... lol Aaron had nothing to do with this! - Matthew Voshell
I TOTALLY AGREE WITH @Kevin - Chris Hale
he reified the dickish programmer - Kevin Marks
The API isn't in the cloud - it's on the device and just transmitted through the cloud if need be - Richard Hendrix
Kevin So you are saying Mark Zuckerburg is a dickish programmer? - Matthew Voshell
I was going to ask Robert if he still had Yo on the phone. - JayVig
I will install it if it guarantees Arsenal will win another trophy this year, Keith! - Tom Guarriello
to some extent - Kate Losse's Boy Kings describes it more clearly - Kevin Marks
Man City are the champions i believe, ahem - Matthew Voshell
but Sorkin created a dickish programmer archetype (possibly intending to be dismissive) but it became a hero role model - Kevin Marks
There should be an intercourse Messaging App. Yes Yes Yes! That would be huge Global Big Data - Moe Glitz from iPhone
hierarchy of noise: yogrammer > brogrammer > programmer - clive boulton
I was looking for this earlier but all the Slick fans... Hipchat is very similar.. a little nicer actaully.. https://www.hipchat.com/ - Matthew Voshell
that's like google's "pay per emotion" patent - Kevin Marks
Slack's integration wins - Kevin Marks
What's that patent, Kevin? - Tom Guarriello
@Kevin.. yea price might too; but idk here are hipchat integrations http://help.hipchat.com/knowled... - Matthew Voshell
Thanks, Kevin. - Tom Guarriello
RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!! - Chris Hale
googs new user tracking bridges mobile apps and web http://blogs.wsj.com/digits... - clive boulton
Once again folks the book is called "age of context" get it on amazon now http://www.amazon.com/Age-Con... - Matthew Voshell
So emotion sensing watches will start driving recommendations to restaurants where people are happy? - Murray Macdonald
The people who hate the change are most vocal - Tony Stanislawski
I did a focus group on the Nespresso machine - Tina Chase Gillmor
Vessyl an early (and ridiculous) example of something that's definitely going to become pervasive. - Tom Guarriello
makeup sex heartrate? - Murray Macdonald
Vessle is awesome cuase it tells you everything thats on the side of the can.. colbert did a nice job with it http://www.theverge.com/2014... - Matthew Voshell
Murray: chocolate for Maryam. :-) - Robert Scoble
so all those home automation protocols that apple and google are working are going to be a big key to this contextual future. - Chris Hale
Nespresso machines are yummy -- but now sounding like "The Circle" - Rob Underwood
I like having a real espresso machine. - Kevin Marks
it's a balance of trade -- are people going to be willing to continue to give up privacy for the convenience and serendipity of discovery? - Rob Underwood
Kevin: sometimes I like a 3-star restaurant. Other times McDonalds. :-) - Robert Scoble
BLE sensors have standardized discovery. - Murray Macdonald
@Rob for music? Movies? Sure... for my home... ehhh :/ - Matthew Voshell
scary future... - Adnan
Yep! That's what I'm saying. Apple becomes the arbiter of the sensors, in effect turning the bundle of sensors into a contextual API that Apple provides. The device is just a part of the programming. - Richard Hendrix
Taxi Trails App in Stockholm tracks the travels of all their taxis via GPS to discover Stockholm Hot Spots - Moe Glitz from iPhone
BLE does but Proximity UUID's do not - Keith Teare
They are trying to stop tracking the UIDs of their devices, not the sensors. - Murray Macdonald
why not push a webmentions notification at an app for scalability of permissions - clive boulton
What apple is doing with beacons is criminal. It's like doing away with DNS so that your computer could only talk to hosts through applications that embed specific IP addresses. The web would have never been born. I put some real effort into a DNS for beacons and I'm now I'm glad I didn't spend more time on it. - Todd Hoff
And Apple is banning BLE to Proximity UUID discovery - Keith Teare
I already did - Francine Hardaway
How exactly are they banning that Keith? - Murray Macdonald
See the thing that scares me about apples approach is that all the data flows directly to apple. I think its important for some of these sensors and things that will talk to each other to be localized to the app in question not to platform itself - Chris Hale
Apple is very good about explaining how they never "touch" your data.... google kind of skirts around it - Matthew Voshell
Android BLE provides a better beacon API. I can detect and respond to beacons without needing to know about them in advance. Apple requires you to pre-register your beacons for the app to respond. - Murray Macdonald
You can set whatever Major and Minor values you want on most BLE beacons. - Murray Macdonald
Can you become a beacon yet on android Murray? - Todd Hoff
Context should not be app specific. Location context is environmental, not app specific. - Murray Macdonald
Murray - yes, all accurate - Keith Teare
Are you asking if an Android phone can transmit as a beacon? - Murray Macdonald
Murray it can not, yet. - Robert Scoble
Apple won't approve apps that try to discover beacons the app doesn't already know about - Keith Teare
Robert: Cannot what? Transmit as a beacon? - Murray Macdonald
Apple will make the browser ? - chris dowling
That's not true. A proper beacon browser would allow you to whitelist desired beacons. There's no reason you need to be spammed. That would just be a bad beacon browser. A good one would let you scan an environment and add the ones you like to your whitelist. - Murray Macdonald
Anybody should be able to make the browser. - Keith Teare
Hearing Apple scaling its Cassandra team ahead of something big - clive boulton
zeroconf, not zigbee - Kevin Marks
Here's a use case: I'm walking down a sidewalk and I want to get information on restaurants on my path. You want to get coupons, specials, menus etc from your local context. Using a general system I could get the id, look it up, apply filters, merge with social streams, figure out the interaction pattern, and present the UI to the user. This can't happen with an iphone. - Todd Hoff
So cute. There's a little Keith in the room - Tina Chase Gillmor
coupons meh - Kevin Marks
Sorry Kevin, yes, zeroconf - Keith Teare
A good beacon browser app would let you enable/disable types of beacons. Coupons, restaurants, etc... Users would turn on and off they things they are interested in. The browser wouldn't spam your notifications, it would present them when you asked, unless you had previously whitelisted them. - Murray Macdonald
saving money bothers you? - Todd Hoff
They don't have the majority of costco customers, just app purchasers. - Murray Macdonald
Murray: Android can not transmit as a beacon. - Robert Scoble
Maybe there will be a "discoverability" ON/OFF setting like in Bluetooth. - Alex de Soto
password heist? - Laura Norvig
It wasn't this stuff about beacons - Francine Hardaway
Robert: Agreed, but it will soon. Also I see little need as phones are already discoverable. Apple can act as an iBeacon, but what is the use? It could be useful in the future when finding friends, etc... but those apps aren't popular as most of that is done through GPS and the cloud, not BLE. - Murray Macdonald
Sprints attempted buyout of Tmobile finally got extinguished this week - Chris Hale
"Netflix subscriber revenue surpasses HBO." - Alex de Soto
And Sprint got a new CEO this week. That is also interesting new IMHO - Chris Hale

Scoble - Can i make a request? Can you maybe try and talk about the android auto experience and compare it to the carplay demo from Mercedes you saw. I think you might be the only one in a unique position to comment on thoughts of both platforms - Chris Hale
Chris: cool. - Robert Scoble
if you want share the show link, i think you need to share the ustream link . I don't see the TC one appearing. ustream.tv/gillmorgang - Tina Chase Gillmor
Do you guys think android one is Googles attempt to strong arm the cheap manufacturers away from cheap gingerbread phones - Chris Hale
Microsofts new X2 phone has stuffed X1 users - X1 software won't be updated. MS habit, not learnt - Ian Waring
im so reluctant to buy a car because I think the smartphone connectivity is going to change so much this year. - Tina Chase Gillmor
I am bummed out my 2014 Infiniti q50 runs a intel tablet in the dash that runs gingerbread and its embarrisingly slow - Chris Hale
Me too, Tina. I'm going to keep my current car, which has Ford Sync, which is not optimal, because I don't know if Apple or Google will have the best tech - Francine Hardaway
Silly. Should just sign company email, content with revocable certificate. If you leave, pull the cert, all company data goes invisible, personal content untouched. Who needs Knox? - Ian Waring
Android apps on Chrome? - Ian Waring
I wonder if the car companies know that the mobile integration is perhaps slowing sales at this point? - Tina Chase Gillmor
is it though? I am not sure anyone can quantify that for sure - Chris Hale
I'm sure they do, but they're legendarily slow to adopt - Francine Hardaway
i think they are slow for good reason though. Just like a tv , a car is a much longer term commitment device that requires long term support - Chris Hale
Ford Sync uses Gracenote, Francine. :) - Ann Greenberg
don't know. but when I go to test drive cars the sales people tell me that one of the biggest concerns people have is how the car integrates with their mobile device - Tina Chase Gillmor
Smartphone connectivity in cars surely bluetooth? - clive boulton
And QNX, as does Apple CarPlay - Ian Waring
i had to really think about this topic this week when i really complained to infiniti this week about how horrible the in car experience is on my car - Chris Hale

Chris - yes - Benedict Evans - At Andreessen Horowitz - Keith Teare
https://www.gracenote.com/case_st... (voice commands and album art and other - Ann Greenberg
Tina I always lease for that exact reason - Francine Hardaway
There is a Lexus hybrid we like but am baffled that they are not using touchscreen tech. Have a device like a mouse - Tina Chase Gillmor
But for that matter, QNX, Apple & Google use Gracenote, and MS integrated it into XBox, too - Ann Greenberg
is your lease almost up Francine? - Tina Chase Gillmor
Mouse in car srsly bad hci - clive boulton
Benedict Evans is wearing the B&W P7 headphones. - Nir Ben Yona
no. another year. - Francine Hardaway
But I have a Smustang convertible and they'll take it back any time - Francine Hardaway
ah, yeah, Benedict. I want to hear his opinion and Scobles opinion on how important do they think these numbers apple and google throw out about developer payouts really are for the platform . The reason i ask is I really think that measurement doesnt mean that much because monetization strategies for different mobile apps can be completely different - Chris Hale
The house is never finished being built in tech - Ann Greenberg
Amazon are stuck in the middle - Ian Waring
So engrossed in chat stream, forgot to start ustream - clive boulton
for instance, dropcam. I don't pay for the app but I pay for the dvr monthly service. They make money at this business but it isn't quantified in that big developer payout number each company likes to throw around - Chris Hale
LOL me too - Ann Greenberg
LOL / tip for Keith replace FriendFeed on mobile - clive boulton
i think app services is a good term - Chris Hale
Agree with Steve - even WhatsApp have platform specific Dev teams - Ian Waring
Unless something changes, I think Google will do better with cross-platform services than Apple. Kind of miss Kevin Marks' perspective today. ;-) - Alex de Soto
notifications might work well for enterprises - clive boulton
so with notifications being a very important part of the app ecosystema and user experience, what do you guys think of notifications on smart watches? - Chris Hale

Right Ian! I forgot about that one. Any others? - Alex de Soto
Not getting a smart watch till Casio does a G-Shock - clive boulton
So scoble, do you think the watch notification handling system seem adequete in the demos you saw? - Chris Hale
Heard stories that there's a big beacon roll out in progress, but little supporting facts... - Ian Waring
Cross playtform doesn't mean one dev team. It means writing software that a mix of iOS and Android users can equally participate in. Definitely 2 dev teams and native code - Keith Teare
Beacons are not apple specific. Bluetooth smart is just a different bluetooth profile - Chris Hale
Does anyone thing that Apple has an advantage in terms of cross platform development because they make consumer privacy a priority? I think Apple has a very hard time with the cloud because of their culture, but, from the privacy perspective, perhaps an advantage. - Ann Greenberg
Cross platform = common back end. Which rules out CloudKit. Clients are specific - Ian Waring
*think - Ann Greenberg
+1 for Ian's comment - Chris Hale
Apple have done a great job with CloudKit - server secure wise. - Ian Waring
so far I think I'm going to like using the smart watch technology but I'll wait to see what Apple will bring to market - Tina Chase Gillmor
Chris Hale: ANdroid can NOT yet transmit Beacons. Only receive. Apple can do both. - Robert Scoble
But Apple specific - Ian Waring
pain in the neck to keep looking down at a phone or a watch. Better Google Glass would be awesome - Da from Android
yeah, I know we talked about it. I think consuming beacons has more use cases at this point than transmitting - Chris Hale
Ian: All baseball stadiums have beacons. So does a lot of other stores, etc. - Robert Scoble
+1 Chris - Ian Waring
Tina: Hope Apple comes out with a round-faced iWatch. Liking the Moto 360 look. - Alex de Soto
Chris that's only true because most programmers haven't even gotten educated on what Beacons are and what they do. - Robert Scoble
Is Cortana what Siri was supposed to be http://goo.gl/lXLqhT - clive boulton
To Dan's comment, whoever creates the best virtual assistant, it will have to work across both Android and Apple. - Ann Greenberg
so in the idea of beacon transmitting, I think apple did something that really forces everyone to have to use beacons for user tracking - Chris Hale
Apple seem to have Passbook already working with Beacons in iOS 8 - Ian Waring
Google did have a session on "Bluetooth Low Energy." - Alex de Soto
I don't know how many of you paid attention to Apples announcement of IOS 8 having mac address spoofing of the wifi antenna while the phone is probing for networks - Chris Hale
Starbucks payment cards and Virgin Atlantic check in desks for boarding passes - Ian Waring
This makes it impossible to try and track someones movement via wifi - Chris Hale
also beacons aren't too prominent on Android, so not a lot of traction - Da from Android
Cortana is Bing based, could work across both Android and Apple (if MS gives up on phone) - clive boulton
Alex: Bluetooth Low Energy has a TON in it only 1/3rd of which is Beacons. Only an hour? Hmmm. - Robert Scoble
93% - Ian Waring
True Robert. Very limited time spent on it. - Alex de Soto

The USB on my wife's Honda Jazz (Fit) can't keep up - Ian Waring
Yes, it will happen Steve - Ann Greenberg
You know, i bet the manufacturers will build car options that you either choose android or IOS - Chris Hale
and its just a different dash kit vs another - Chris Hale
Why, oh why has Apple only made a deal with Mercedes? - Tina Chase Gillmor
because they are a little too full of themselves - Chris Hale
Mercedes says they are gonna do Google too. Apple is just eight months ahead. - Robert Scoble
Audi announced "Apple this year, Google next" this morning. - Robert Scoble
they probably want to illustrate they are a high end product integrated into another high end product - Chris Hale

Wondering how blood sugar levels get measured... - Ian Waring
Steve: the notification freak - Tina Chase Gillmor
Non-invasive for a watch? - Ian Waring
Auto screens are "car grade," whatever that means. More durable, safer? Usually slower displays and chips. Some car companies will accept installation of either Car Play or Google's Android Auto. - Alex de Soto
I love infiniti and not such a big fan of audi. Audi is like google in many ways. They are brave and always ready to try new things. Problem is somethings they are half baked - Chris Hale
Robert, did you get that from Wonder Woman? Will it bounce bullets back at the bad guys? - Frank Paynter
Wearables have made me really tired of half baked tech - Francine Hardaway
i started thinking that smart watches will actually cause a really potentially positive movement in public cell phone etiquette - Chris Hale
Dan, dat is cold - Matt Terenzio
Frank: hah. Google gave them to everyone at IO yesterday. - Robert Scoble

i know scoble you metioned it on facebook - Chris Hale
Charlie - I think only two G3's since you left? We did one yesterday but I haven't released it yet - Tina Chase Gillmor

Scoble numbers of #FIFAWorldCup following on Twitter vs. FB really interesting (not good for Twitter) - Halley Suitt Tucker

Halley - good analogy - Tina Chase Gillmor

So Apple has driven out RIM... buh-bye blackberry, but what does that have to do with the enormous global power of android? - Frank Paynter

sort of like the move from green screens - Jerome Hughes from iPhone
I also am a mobile app developer and server side developer and my opinion is restful based services that arent locked to a single vendor are the real key that will continue to power peoples mobile apps. AOSP is already as big as Google Android - Kevin Marks
who's going to be MC at i/O now vic is gone? - Kevin Marks
what bothers me about apple delving into other physical devices and google for that matter is that I don't like the notion of being locked into the idea of buying a car(for example) that is only compatible with IOS . like Snapcaht - Tina Chase Gillmor
I love the fake low depth of field in google's new camera - Kevin Marks
Kevin, will give your post a read...W/a quick glance I see your point, but to Steve's point, w/the web being deprecated; and Mary Meeker's use #'s on mobile backing that up - won't Apple just clone a Facebook style version of the deep linking methodology and call it a day? I'm probably oversimplifying...but the issue you're referring to isn't an issue in my use cases, and I think I could safely be called a power user. - J.C. Bouvier
I am really starting to think that apples strategy of melding mobile os and desktop os are very much on the verge of completely bluring the lines between mobile and desktop - Chris Hale
I hope Apple do fix that - Kevin Marks
i think that new programming language is at the heart of it because now that it will be easier to write apps with, I think it will open up mobile app developers easily transition between writing something on mobile as well as an actual desktop app - Chris Hale
audio/video editing is a weak point of the web - Kevin Marks
I pondered it yesterday when I logged into my IOS developer account and they are now letting me download betas of the new OSX. They used to reserve that privilege to only developers who pay for the Mac developer program - Chris Hale

thanks to all, nice tweet tweet audio exit, frustrating gaps watching on train, look forward to complete recording - Jerome Hughes from iPhone
Ann, I agree with you. I have had enough experience in the industry and with certain units within apple to really dont have faith they are really up for building a reliable cloud service - Chris Hale
not to mention every time they have some sort of outtage it gets magnified by publicity - Chris Hale
