Why Watchmen failed to usher in a comic-book revolution. - By Grady Hendrix - Slate Magazine - http://www.slate.com/id...
"But Watchmen's failure wasn't that it failed to influence other comics but that the book's most meaningless and shallow aspects were mistakenly hailed as its virtues and then widely imitated. Much praised for its "realistic" take on superheroes, Watchmen made the point that superheroes, realistic or otherwise, were beside the point. Its costumed do-gooders are retired, impotent, or insane, and they generally do more harm than good. Their adversaries are virtually nonexistent, and when we do see them, they look more like Vegas magicians than world-class threats." - Scott Cederlund

“I think it’s fiction by a fan,” Fraction said, thinking aloud. “I think fan fiction exists either to find… radical newness. Inappropriate, furry, very inappropriate newness… I don’t know – that seems to be stasis to me.” - Scott Cederlund

"In fact, like most superhero comics, Marvels tend to be much less about ideas than motifs. That's not a complaint, just an observation, and the choice has certainly worked well for them. Given current buying trends it's fairly safe to say that, in the marketplace if not in the hearts and minds of creators." - Scott Cederlund

Blambot Comic Fonts and Lettering - http://blambot.com/grammar...
"Comic book lettering has some grammatical and aesthetic traditions that are quite unique. What follows is a list that every letterer eventually commits to his/her own mental reference file. The majority of these points are established tradition, sprinkled with modern trends and a bit of my own opinion having lettered professionally for a few years now. The majority of these ideas have been established by Marvel and DC, but opinions vary from editor to editor, even within the same company. I'm often asked to bend or break these rules based on what "feels" best, or more likely, the space constraints within a panel." - Scott Cederlund

Vet critics adapt to challenging times - Entertainment News, Contenders: All Content, Media - Variety - http://www.variety.com/article...
"Yet the challenges faced by film critics old and young are not all a result of problems in publishing. Studios are partly to blame. "It's completely insane," says Morgenstern. "It's all about winning weekends and setting up for Oscars. So of course our lives are bent out of shape."" Substitute "weekend" with "month" and that seems to be how the comic industry is going too. And we, the bloggers and the podcasts, feed into that as well. - Scott Cederlund

Comic book store owner skips sentencing of man who robbed him -- 'I'm not dying for vengeance' - Grand Rapids News - The Grand Rapids Press Online - Michigan Newspaper - MLive.com - http://www.mlive.com/grpress...
"KENTWOOD -- Comic book store owner David Pirkola was occupied setting up for a sale this weekend so he didn't make it to see one of three men who robbed him sentenced to prison. "I've just been too busy," said Pirkola, the owner of Apparitions Comics and Book Store near Woodland Mall, which was struck by a trio of robbers on April 25. One of the men shot Pirkola near the abdomen, putting him in the hospital for weeks in critical condition. Circuit Court Judge Dennis Leiber Thursday sentenced 19-year-old James Muriel-Neal Thompson to seven to 30 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to armed robbery. Thompson agreed to cooperate in the prosecution of the other two men suspected of robbing the store, including 19-year-old Marvin Michael-Marquis Jones, whose trial is expected to begin next month, and 19-year-old Jove Marquis Sawyer, who remains at large." - Scott Cederlund

“The End” for Write Now! » TwoMorrows Tune-In podcast and TNT blog - http://twomorrows.com/blog...
"Big announcement: After six years and soon-to-be 20 issues, we’ve decided to end Write Now! magazine. I’ve got to say, I’m really sorry to see it go; Danny Fingeroth has been absolutely professional and delightful to work with on it, and always managed to teach me (and his readers, based on the mail we get) something new about the intricacies of writing for comic books and related fields." Found via The Comics Reporter, the magazine Comic Foundry will cease publication with their fifth issue. IGN: Could Heroes Move Away From Serialization? - http://tv.ign.com/article...
" When the fan asked if Peter would ever acknowledge Caitlin or express any grief over what seems to be her dire fate, Kring replied, "No, we passed it. We leapfrogged it." He added that when the idea of returning to Caitlin was brought up, they asked, "Really? Are we going to risk that? We have enough stuff to [deal with]." Anyone related to Heroes should shut up, stop talking to whatever press and try to save their show. - Scott Cederlund

*Promethea — Recommended » Comics Worth Reading - http://comicsworthreading.com/2008...
"In addition to representing many readers’ fantasies, this sequence marks the transition from story to instruction manual; from this point forward, the book becomes Moore’s lecture about his ideas of how magic works, beginning with a walk through the Tarot as representative of human history." I just read the series as well and was taking notes on it as well but I like Joanna's description here. I view the book more as a travelogue than as instructional but both ideas work. - Scott Cederlund

Death to film critics! Hail to the CelebCult! - Roger Ebert's Journal - http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert...

Old Saws Revisited, and Hence Made Older Still - ARTicles - http://www.najp.org/article...
"My complaint is with reviewers whose hyperbolic verbiage is regularly deployed in ads to hype product, in particular films. This is not the same as the fly-by-night credits accorded raves from authors and organizations no one has ever heard of, and who may well be interns in the production companies' PR or marketing departments. "No, I am thinking of real critics, and particularly right now of Peter Travers of Rolling Stone. I have never met Travers. He may be a beacon of honesty, an insightful critic and an all-around great fellow. But his raves routinely adorn movies of varying quality, so much so that a reader begins to distrust his imprimatur and to start wondering about his incessant enthusiasm." - Scott Cederlund
