Another great data visualization piece. Very interesting to see the huge and rapid energy consumption increase in Asia in the last 7 years. Even so, the US carbon emissions per person are by far the highest in the worl.

Interesting lesson on what can happen when social takes off. People do like to interact, and it's important to react, and have a plan B in place.

I grew up in Colorado, though I spent a few years in TX and KS as a kid. lol I've picked up a few things from my TX days...like saying "ya'll". lol

[Okay, this is going to be a challenge to follow. Bear with me.] Everyone in our family says 'by accident' except my #2 son! My spouse and I grew up in Wisconsin, and we have subsequently lived in Illinois (Chicago), Washington State (Seattle) and Minnesota (Twin Cities) while the kids were growing up. My daughter (age 17) was born in Seattle but was only 4 when we moved to Minnesota,...

By accident. China. Never heard people use "On accident", maybe cos I live in Pennsylvania now..
- azalea
wow, Mark. That was a seriously in-depth response! I thought this would be a throwaway question but it's really taken off, here and on twitter. Looks like west coast/upper midwest people tend to use both "by" and "on" quite a lot, unlike midwest and northeast, where "by" is almost exclusive. there's lots of interesting research out there about kids being more linguistically influenced by their peers than their parents...

violin (only for about a year at age 3), clarinet, flute & drums a little bit for marching band and such; but mostly did 7 years of oboe. oh and a little piano and organ just for fun at home.
- Rachel Lea Fox
story: i remember my violin teacher from age 3. She was a nun and she had one of those horrible clown puppets that pops out of a cone that she would make pop out if I did something wrong. It scared me and I hated it and her.
- Rachel Lea Fox
the oboe I loved!!I was a very good sight reader too, and I mostly just played for the joy, didn't really practice much, just enjoyed playing it and playing in the bad. But when I became a senior in high school and was the only higher level oboe player they moved me to first chair and suddenly there was a lot more pressure and the joy went away and I had too many things on my plate...

Three cool things about my flute playing (and there were plenty of not cool things but .. let's concentrate on the positive) was a) I took lessons in the city (Philadelphia) and got to ride the train alone and wander around South Street afterwards, all as an early teenager and b) it got a bit cool when the flute (or piccolo) was featured in a Men at Work song and c) all my fellow flautists were girls and that wasn't a bad place to be.

Bass Viola was bigger than me at the time.

I was the one kid out of 9 to not have to play an instrument in the family, I was addicted to throwing the baseball.
- Steve C
I played the flute. I don't have a story. It's tradition in my family that the women play the flute and sing. The men play the piano and/or drums.

Wanted to play guitar, but they didn't offer it at school, so I had to play violin. Only did it for a few months. Eventually I bought a guitar and taught myself to play.
- Cristo
Saxphone... I was horrible. I chalk it up as a huge lessoned learned. Lesson in my mind is "You can be a lover of music, without playing it." I truly love almost all forms of music, but have no patience for the dedication required to be a musician.

Violin until high school (although I did play a little throughout high school) and then trombone for marching band in high school. Dropped both once I got to college. Kinda regret dropping the violin but I just started teaching myself guitar now.

Piano, then trumpet, then French horn, with a tiny bit of guitar mixed in.

Piano but my mother taught it and felt a bit imposed.

picked up violin at age 10 by choice but switched to guitar at 13. still playing that (as well as several other instruments) to this day.

i played viola for about 7 years from about 7 to 14. i continued to play while many of my fellow students i started with eventually dropped it to pursue other things. I was a passable player, and could have been much better had I put in a little more practice each day. It was never something I was going to be good enough to make a living at though.
- Imabug
I played the trumpet for a few months in 4th grade, but the case was about as big as me. My senior year of high school I played the bells.
- Heather
When I was around 11 I played percussion in the band.. So anything that could be struck, slapped, pounded, or clapped together. And guitar and trumpet for a little while

Trombone. Still doing it (obviously... high school).
- Zach Flauaus
I played multiple instruments, but my primary ones were (and still are, really) piano, flute, and oboe. I was massively into music growing up, so whenever I had the chance, I learned other instruments. Guitar, trombone, xylophone, trumpet, alto sax, tenor sax, clarinet, cello, French horn, piccolo...those are the ones I can recall off the top of my head. Me learning trombone is probably...

Whole school had a music test when I was about 8. Top 5 students got to learn a musical instrument. I was one of the 5. "What would you like to learn to play?" they asked. "Piano! Guitar! Drums!" we answered. "How nice," they said. "You're all learning the violin so go tell your parents to buy you one."

Clarinet and Contra Alto Clairnet, and I once played a bass drum in a parade.

...Can I just throw this in under instruments I have owned and cannot play to save my life? If so, then it's guitar, accordion, recorder, and piano. Two of which I still own.
- Colette
None. *sigh* I was given a choice of band and baseball. Band would have given me something to last a lifetime. One of the very few truly bad parenting moments in my childhood.
- Michael W. May
I played trumpet for about 7 years, but then developed recurring Belle's Palsy (partial asymmetric facial paralysis) and had to give it up. The facial paralysis eventually went away but my lips have lingering weakness on one side. Tried to play again on my son's when he was learning it, but still no go.

Blake: I bet you also love the term "Social Graph" haha

1) Tacking the term "social" onto everything 2) Hyping (as opposed to facts) 3) Nonsensical trends & memes 4) Pointless joke posts (especially on Digg) 5) Baseless bashing 6) Poor spelling/grammar in FB statuses 7) On FriendFeed, pointless posts by prominent people that get liked by 50 other users and clutter my Home Feed 8) On FB, no tags or captions in pics 9) Using Twitter as a copy...

Have you guys ever tried www.lunch.com? It doesn't have any of the problems 1-9 that LANjackal said and I completely agree! It's a combo of Yelp and Wikipedia, so you get quality reviews on stuff you want to check out by people that share similar interests with you....

@ Clark....Sorry, I don't care about someone going to the gym, taking a shit, waking up...They should be for sharing info on movies/restaurants, etc that they just ate at and liked or info on upcoming shows, or sharing music, etc. I don't mind if it's every once in a while, a nice good morning and maybe I'm soo tired but, I just don't care about hearing the mundane details of someone's...

@DJ Evoke, I think it could get annoying to hear about peoples' bowel movements, but that's kinda how twitter/FB started. Other uses kinda just developed after people started seeing it as a platform for something more than just a way to share what you ate for lunch. Though, there are some people (family, friends) where I want to see random, "purposeless" updates.

I deal with annoying FB statuses by checking them via Digsby's FB chat feature only. That shows only the people who're online and is a lot more manageable. + it allows me to use the site without actually having to be on it

@LANjackal- thanks SO much for that suggestion- I'm going to look into it! @Cassidy, you're right- I want to see the random BS updates from friends and family, just not complete strangers that I could care less about...I know that sounds harsh but, once you belong to a couple of these things it gets tedious to scroll through.

Funny that you asked. I am annoyed by my own posts that get duplicated or posted more than twice because of the other sites that I aggregated(?) with other social sites. FF for example. I attached a lot of my social networks to it, then a post hits twitter, then twitter hits FB, then FB hits my blogs and you got the idea. Then my twitter and friendfeed end up receiving and reposting the same post that originated from soup.io for example. Any suggestion?

Facebook mail from groups. (fan pages are better than groups as you don't need to spam people's mail boxes to get a message across, you simply use the status for all to see, so with that, consider deleting your group and move it all to a fan page instead) :D peace.

I use Facebook more for old friends and relatives and not really for business. To avoid out-and-out blocking certain "close" blowhards, I'd like to see a button that says "Someone who generally cares about you thinks you should shut the ___ up for a while." so I can anonymously give my opinion of their content.
