As long as it's not pronounced "cool" - Jim Norris
It depends on the product. Does "originally to describe an elephant gone mad, separated from its herd, running wild and causing devastation" match what you're building? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A... - Paul Buchheit
Trying to find a non-descriptive name... Yes, the association to 'amok' is a bit disturbing but testing if that is what comes to mind when you first see it. So a thumbs-down than? - Bindu Reddy
if you pronounce it in portuguese it would sound something like "ouch! my ass!" (ai! meu cu!) - Leandro Koiti Sato
It doesn't do much for me, but I also sold Apple stock when it hit $44, so I'm probably not the best judge. - Jim Graham
Has a soft non-threatenting Hawaiian coffee drink connotation too. - Michael Muller
try something like avakaya.com in the same spirit of ooyala.com by some other ex-googlers :) - Krishna Gade
My first thought was "amok you", which sounds decidedly unfriendly. - Laurence Gonsalves
Is this like single-bit twitter? "Am ok, you?" If it's something like that, once I get the association, it is memorable. - Neil Kandalgaonkar
Initial gut reaction: "meh". Feels like you spun the wheel of five-letter-words still available as domain names and this one came up. I don't really like that it isn't obvious how to pronounce it. Hard to pronounce can mean hard to remember. - Dylan Parker
Hmm, I like the idea of single-bit twitter. Why not 1-bit ff? At any time, you can add an item to your feed. All items are 1 bit, Like/NotLike. Just like in the real ff, friends can comment, again with just Like or NotLike. - j1m
"Donald Trump should have gone bankrupt back in 1991, I can't stand when his name is brought up in lists of successful business people. He would have more money right now if he had just taken his dad's money and put it into a mutual fund. What a failure." - Sam Purtill
(1062, "Duplicate entry '2847990' for key 1") all I get is this error message when I try to post photos to Pownce anymore. And I can only get the site to load about 20% of the time on a good day :( - Thomas Hawk
Confused, the website is up and you have a recent post there so what's stopping you? [edit] now I see your comment and that makes sense now - Dave Cohen
Dave, I can only get Pownce to load a page about 20% of the time in any browser and when I try and post a photo there repeatedly I get the error message above. Pownce has been virtually unusable for me for 2 months now. It's so much work to have to try to load my page 10 times to simply try and post a photo there. It's sad because it's a great community and I love the site but It's just so difficult to use. I used to post there every day. It's getting too hard to do that anymore. - Thomas Hawk
I liked Pownce a lot. I really wanted it to take off, but the load time is just too much of a deterrent. - eve shot first
it works for me using the buttons on zooomr... - Bill Scherer
Amazon's S3 is down right now and it's affecting a lot of sites (some more than other). Much of twitter's avatar hosting is hosed, as is Friendfeed (for friendfeed items). Reddit is boned too. Pownce probably relies on it a bit more than some sites. - Clint Ecker
IMO they really missed the boat when twitter was experiencing their severe problems. They seemed well positioned to make a move - wondering where management was on that one? - Morgan
I wonder if I drop contacts if it would load my page better. I haven't added any new contacts in two weeks or so because I've assumed that because I have so many contacts there that this is one of the reasons why my page won't load. I posted on the getsatisfaction thread as well. Maybe this will get resolved somehow. - Thomas Hawk
Yeah try dropping contacts, that would speed it up. I think Pownce's biggest competitor is Tumblr, not Twitter. Tumblr has blown it away according to Compete: http://siteanalytics.compete.c... - Sam Purtill
I had the same error as TH did, earlier today. One error, then posted correctly. - Trevor Carpenter
The errors (not sure about this one you mention) have been happening for months, white pages and posts that either error out or disappear after saying they posted, amazingly the new desktop client works well, and they pushed out the iPhone App, but they still haven't fixed these issues even though have acknowledged them in earlier posts weeks and weeks ago. - cmiper
damn, you have to "unfriend" people one at a time over at Pownce. grrrr.. I started doing it and then I just felt bad for some reason unfriending people. I'm not sure how to make the site work for me though without unfriending a bunch of people. Grrrrr.. Maybe I'll just skip Pownce altogether for a while. - Thomas Hawk
Ariel Waldman at Pownce confirms what I suspected. Pownce will load better if you have less contacts. The only problem now though is that I'm reluctant to spend the time deleting contacts one by one. Hopefully they can figure out a way to randomly dump 1,500 or so of my contacts there to get it to work for me. Kind of a sucky thing to have to do, but better to do that and have it actually work I think. http://getsatisfaction.com/pow... - Thomas Hawk
Thomas - It's a known issue. Scoble and Veronica Belmont have the same problem. Too many followers right now = fail - Charlie Anzman
I used to enjoy Pownce too... Went away for a while, and when I came back it seems like all my contacts were ignoring me. Couldn't really get back in the conversation so I dropped out. Fortunately that's about the time I found FriendFeed so I'm not missing it much. - Lindsay Donaghe
lots of contacts, but no action... Kinda like a lot of sites that surge and grow but ultimately don't get enough general traction. I just Ping.fm my pownce account and don't go there much otherwise. - Roger Kondrat
I barely use Pownce anymore. I only got like 3 people added. - Outsanity
I never really got the point of pownce comparatively to the other services like tumblr & twitter... - Erik Persson
friendfeed is the future. I really don't want to micro blog. if I want to say something I will blog it. - AnotherⓃⓄⒶⒽ
Never could get into Pownce. If anything I see Friendfeed as a Pownce killer than a Twitter Killer. - Chris Rodgers
Seemed good but never had the user base of Twitter. Now with friendfeed I hardly ever log into Pownce. - Stuart Forsyth

@Dave doesn't the EXIF data tell that? - Sam Purtill
@Sam, certainly. Wanted to get some insight from Thomas as he shoots RAW. Shooting light sources is, at best, interesting ;) Thomas, also, your thoughts on DNG please since Sam brought up standards. Thanks. - Dave Martin
No flash on the shot. I rarely ever use flash -- sometimes I use it for people shots at an event where light is too low, but almost never for anything else. Have to play with my flash more and learn to do more creative things with it. I don't really use DNG. I shoot everything in RAW, edit from there and then save out to JPG. I think JPG is still more the standard than DNG and think that JPG XR will become the new standard and an improvement over today's JPG and will likely adopt that at some point. - Thomas Hawk
@thomashawk: I've been doing some interesting things with flash recently, trying to avoid blowout. I've tried using a piece of white paper to bounce the flash upwards towards the ceiling, which diffuses it before it reaches the subject. - Thomas B

@Thomas B - what about a Gary Fong Lightsphere? - Tom Quinn
@tommquinn: interesting, I hadn't heard of the Gary Fong Lightsphere before. I just did a search for it, it looks pretty cool. Thanks! - Thomas B

UltraEdit supposed to do good job and with lesser learning curve the emacs,, but let's here what @Yuvi already tried - Naor
@Naor: I just tried emacs - it's visibly redrawing while scrolling text a simple 30 meg file :( Tried EditPadPro for some time, turned out to be slow as well. - Yuvi
I love Textpad, but it probably isn't a perfect match for your requirements. - Sean McBride
And btw, I use Visual Studio Express edition's text editor's text editing stuff - it's the only one that "atleast" renders the 400 meg text files (xml stuff - that's why it's so bloated) - Yuvi
as you can imagine I used vim (well actually vi) for long time (unix..etc) . it take some time to master but if you need heavey-duty text working , multiple platform and more then once.. it worth it - Naor
Why do you need to edit a 400MB text file? Maybe the problem isn't the editor but the process here? - Rob Diana
@Rob Diana: I'm not "editing" it - it's an XML file with "data" for thestatbot.com analysis (flickr, fyi). I know it's stupid using XML as a data storage format, but that's the simplest thing I could come up with - and I need to ocassionally check up if things are right inside the xml file. With no tool to directly view any of the data, I've to rely on a text editor for quick looks. - Yuvi
@Andrew: Sign me up when Textmate is ported to Windows :) - Yuvi
I'll second the vote for Notepad++. I use it as a portable app from portableapps.com. - Sergio Cruz
ah, ok. definitely start changing your data storage because your text file problem will just get worse. If you can parcel/split the file on the data storage side, your problem goes away. From the code perspective, not much would change. Process one file, or process several in a loop. - Rob Diana
@Rob Diana: I'm looking for alternatives, but don't think I can find many without switching to sqlite - I could go for db4o, but that ties me to .NET and Java (leaving Python and Ruby out). Ofcourse, I'm using XML right now 'coz it's quite darn easy to persist to XML from the .NET libraries. *Should*change*to*something*more*scalable*soon* - Yuvi
Notepad++, Scite, all Scintilla based editors lock up :( - Yuvi
scratch that - Vim opened up just fine (after a pause though). So far the best... - Yuvi
yup. it should be smart.. just do some experiments on smaller file.. till you get used to the commands (doing a global search and replace by reg.exp. can be hmm.. very frustrating when you end up with something you didn't intend to do :):) - Naor

So you are retiring from one medium, just to take up the same task in another? - David
Jason - bad day to announce. You'll get lost in the iPhone launch - Dave Hodson
"Starting today all of my thoughts will be reserved for a new medium. Something smaller, something more intimate, and something very personal: an email list. ............I'm going to try and build a deeper relationship with fewer people--try to get back to my roots." Sounds more like you're trying to get back to 1994! You should add a fax newsletter subscription too! ;) - Adam Turetzky
Joke or serious comment? I find it hard to believe that will be able to stop unless the sale of Mahalo is true. - Andrew Forde

"Today the email list has about 600 members, I'm going to cut it off when it reaches 750. Frankly, that's enough more than enough people to have a conversation with." - a nice problem to have, being forced to pare down your circle of friends to 750! Enjoy your "freedom". :) - Lindsay Donaghe
may i suggest western union- would be great for us all to return to telegrams. or: -... ..- .-.. .-.. .-.. -.. --- --. ... .-. --- -.-. -.- - Nice Fish Films
Jason, I enjoyed reading your blog and learned a lot about building mine by observing some of your design/etc. successes. Proud to be on your e-mail list, though! - Andy DeSoto
I am going to missing your writing. But you will probably come back to your pen for it's likely you'll miss your blog in time. So I guess this is just an au revoir! - Eric Sausse
too bad, man. i hope my subscription to your list goes through and i am one of the people that gets to carry on the conversation with you. - Adam Bullied

Like Napoleon's army after the defeat in Moscow, straggling west, fleeing the hideous frozen hell, we are moving into the (for me, at least) unknown... - Dave LaFontaine
Ok, trying FF as well. Still like twitter and will be sad if I have to leave it - Lide Winburn
Ive been following you for awhile but I dont think youve been following me because Ive replied back and you never answered and it said you wasnt following... :) but im still following you!!!!! - Christopher
It seems to me this is kind of a moot point. You draw those who follow you into your convesation and if someone makes a comment that continually intriques you all you have to do is simply subscribe to their ff. No need to wage a big dick contest with numbers of followers here. Its all about the conversation. Just an observation at this point.. I'm just now starting the migration from twitter to FF myself;-) - Curtis Cross
