Yuvi, it sounds like you're having hardware issues which often manifest as unexplained software issues. If you're having trouble getting software installed, or if things are randomly crashing, I can almost guarantee it's your RAM. Vista is notorious for being very finicky with RAM timings. - Akiva Moskovitz
Akiva - Oh well, I was having issues. Then I installed all the updates. Now everything runs dang fine, and I have VS running in the background ;) - Yuvi
Oh! Duh! You should never do anything with a freshly installed Microsoft OS until after all updates are installed, including the latest service pack. - Akiva Moskovitz
@Akiva - SP1 yet to be installed. Y'see, I'm on a 256kbps connection, so things aren't as fast as they are on your side :( - Yuvi
Oh crap. Yeah. Well, I'd get right on that. SP1 is essential. You might want to look into some kind of imaging solution, as well (such as Acronis). That way, you can get Vista installed the way you like it with all of the updates in place and then, next time you need to format, you can just install of the image and go. - Akiva Moskovitz
@Akiva - Should :) I find Vista to not require constant reinstalls like XP tho - this is the first time I'm re-installing, and that's 'coz I got the x64 bits. Imaging does sound cool tho :) - Yuvi
FF3 is kinda crashy on Vista 32 as well.... it just does not always play well with flash. - Stefan Hayden
@Stefan - Yes, I usually do most of my Youtube watching on IE or Opera - Yuvi
As long as it's not pronounced "cool" - Jim Norris
It depends on the product. Does "originally to describe an elephant gone mad, separated from its herd, running wild and causing devastation" match what you're building? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A... - Paul Buchheit
Trying to find a non-descriptive name... Yes, the association to 'amok' is a bit disturbing but testing if that is what comes to mind when you first see it. So a thumbs-down than? - Bindu Reddy
if you pronounce it in portuguese it would sound something like "ouch! my ass!" (ai! meu cu!) - Leandro Koiti Sato
It doesn't do much for me, but I also sold Apple stock when it hit $44, so I'm probably not the best judge. - Jim Graham
Has a soft non-threatenting Hawaiian coffee drink connotation too. - Michael Muller
try something like avakaya.com in the same spirit of ooyala.com by some other ex-googlers :) - Krishna Gade
My first thought was "amok you", which sounds decidedly unfriendly. - Laurence Gonsalves
Is this like single-bit twitter? "Am ok, you?" If it's something like that, once I get the association, it is memorable. - Neil Kandalgaonkar
Initial gut reaction: "meh". Feels like you spun the wheel of five-letter-words still available as domain names and this one came up. I don't really like that it isn't obvious how to pronounce it. Hard to pronounce can mean hard to remember. - Dylan Parker
Hmm, I like the idea of single-bit twitter. Why not 1-bit ff? At any time, you can add an item to your feed. All items are 1 bit, Like/NotLike. Just like in the real ff, friends can comment, again with just Like or NotLike. - j1m
"Donald Trump should have gone bankrupt back in 1991, I can't stand when his name is brought up in lists of successful business people. He would have more money right now if he had just taken his dad's money and put it into a mutual fund. What a failure." - Sam Purtill

You go, Helen -- although I can't believe that aside (in the article) about her coming out of swimming in the Adriatic and "popping her teeth back in." A bit of gratuitous snark, methinks... - Yule Heibel
"I'd do 'er. I'd do 'er all flippin' night. Oh bollocks, she's older than my mum." - Wayne Hayes :-) - AJ Batac ♘
How are we supposed to react? She's very attractive. She's one of the great working actresses. Am I missing something? - Chris Baskind
I'm with you Chris. I think I know how to react: 1.) NICE butt! 2.) WOW, she's in her 60s - that's AMAZING. How else was I supposed to react!? - Robert Seidman
I keep reading that 60 is the new 40 (which isn't entirely a good thing). But Helen Mirren sure gives cred to the idea. Still sexy at 60? Bravo! - Chris Baskind
Helen Mirren is hot. Anyone who doesn't realize that isn't paying attention. - Sarah
maybe they should see the Shadowboxer or more salacious coverage( or not) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt03... [it was filmed a few houses away from me, so saw here often.] - clarke thomas
The Queen, got some Oscar buzz, you might recall ;) She's been a babe for nearly 50 years. - Michael W. May

Micheal - I don't recall :D I'll google her I guess. - Yuvi
Srsly? "I'd do her"? Nice, guys. Real classy. It's one thing to appreciate a woman's attractiveness, but you could have a little respect. Jeez. - Sarah
Sarah, they are having fun with and quoting the site, which is a humour site. Don't get too men are pigs on us (besides, I've seen some female responses in much the same vein). - Michael W. May
Sorry, but the best line is about the pearl necklaces. - Rick Powell
Sarah: Depending on how high your standards are, "I'd do her", could be the highest form of respect. - Roger Benningfield
Some men are pigs, and so are some women! And I'm just saying 1) you should be so lucky (shoot, I should be so lucky); 2) it is possible (even fore pigs) to more artfully, subtly, and yes, respectfully affirm that indeed, Helen Mirren is sexy (and I agree). Highest form of respect? Puhleeze. Isn't there a way to carry on this thread without being so crass? I was having fun with this thread, too, until I saw that, and I just wanted to call it out. I just didn't think it was cool. - Sarah
i totally hear you, sarah. However, AJ Batac *was* quoting somebody. :D - edythe
Sarah: Given the standards of the typical male, you're probably right. But it *could* be. - Roger Benningfield
Indeed, though he wasn't the only one who said it. It's Helen effing Mirren, man! One of the Grand Dames of cinema! One of the most brilliant actors of our time, which, if I may say, only adds to her sexiness. She certainly deserves better than the lowest common denominator. I'm just trying to raise the level of discourse here. But then again, I should keep my expectations low. Whatever, I think all agree, Helen Mirren is hot. And if I look as good as she does in ten or twenty years, I'll be stoked. - Sarah
Just finished watching Prime Suspect seasons 1 & 2. Besides looking badass in a bikini, she's a total BADASS. - Ginger Makela
(1062, "Duplicate entry '2847990' for key 1") all I get is this error message when I try to post photos to Pownce anymore. And I can only get the site to load about 20% of the time on a good day :( - Thomas Hawk
Confused, the website is up and you have a recent post there so what's stopping you? [edit] now I see your comment and that makes sense now - Dave Cohen
Dave, I can only get Pownce to load a page about 20% of the time in any browser and when I try and post a photo there repeatedly I get the error message above. Pownce has been virtually unusable for me for 2 months now. It's so much work to have to try to load my page 10 times to simply try and post a photo there. It's sad because it's a great community and I love the site but It's just so difficult to use. I used to post there every day. It's getting too hard to do that anymore. - Thomas Hawk
I liked Pownce a lot. I really wanted it to take off, but the load time is just too much of a deterrent. - eve shot first
it works for me using the buttons on zooomr... - Bill Scherer
Amazon's S3 is down right now and it's affecting a lot of sites (some more than other). Much of twitter's avatar hosting is hosed, as is Friendfeed (for friendfeed items). Reddit is boned too. Pownce probably relies on it a bit more than some sites. - Clint Ecker
IMO they really missed the boat when twitter was experiencing their severe problems. They seemed well positioned to make a move - wondering where management was on that one? - Morgan
I wonder if I drop contacts if it would load my page better. I haven't added any new contacts in two weeks or so because I've assumed that because I have so many contacts there that this is one of the reasons why my page won't load. I posted on the getsatisfaction thread as well. Maybe this will get resolved somehow. - Thomas Hawk
Yeah try dropping contacts, that would speed it up. I think Pownce's biggest competitor is Tumblr, not Twitter. Tumblr has blown it away according to Compete: http://siteanalytics.compete.c... - Sam Purtill
I had the same error as TH did, earlier today. One error, then posted correctly. - Trevor Carpenter
The errors (not sure about this one you mention) have been happening for months, white pages and posts that either error out or disappear after saying they posted, amazingly the new desktop client works well, and they pushed out the iPhone App, but they still haven't fixed these issues even though have acknowledged them in earlier posts weeks and weeks ago. - cmiper
damn, you have to "unfriend" people one at a time over at Pownce. grrrr.. I started doing it and then I just felt bad for some reason unfriending people. I'm not sure how to make the site work for me though without unfriending a bunch of people. Grrrrr.. Maybe I'll just skip Pownce altogether for a while. - Thomas Hawk
Ariel Waldman at Pownce confirms what I suspected. Pownce will load better if you have less contacts. The only problem now though is that I'm reluctant to spend the time deleting contacts one by one. Hopefully they can figure out a way to randomly dump 1,500 or so of my contacts there to get it to work for me. Kind of a sucky thing to have to do, but better to do that and have it actually work I think. http://getsatisfaction.com/pow... - Thomas Hawk
Thomas - It's a known issue. Scoble and Veronica Belmont have the same problem. Too many followers right now = fail - Charlie Anzman
I used to enjoy Pownce too... Went away for a while, and when I came back it seems like all my contacts were ignoring me. Couldn't really get back in the conversation so I dropped out. Fortunately that's about the time I found FriendFeed so I'm not missing it much. - Lindsay Donaghe
lots of contacts, but no action... Kinda like a lot of sites that surge and grow but ultimately don't get enough general traction. I just Ping.fm my pownce account and don't go there much otherwise. - Roger Kondrat
I barely use Pownce anymore. I only got like 3 people added. - Outsanity
I never really got the point of pownce comparatively to the other services like tumblr & twitter... - Erik Persson
friendfeed is the future. I really don't want to micro blog. if I want to say something I will blog it. - AnotherⓃⓄⒶⒽ
Never could get into Pownce. If anything I see Friendfeed as a Pownce killer than a Twitter Killer. - Chris Rodgers
Seemed good but never had the user base of Twitter. Now with friendfeed I hardly ever log into Pownce. - Stuart Forsyth

whats 'normal' porn ?? no seriously.. porn is porn , just like kink is kink.. !! - Peter Dawson
Why do I have the feeling this was an aftermath of Trish's comment... <grin> - Parth Awasthi
@cody There isn't any porn on my computer. Maybe some shirtless pics of very celebs ;) - Michelle Marie Miller
Clearly, Michelle, he does not realize that your geek is bigger than his. - Bradley McSpinn
I'm editing his registry file. I can't tell if he is amazed or turned off? LOL - Michelle Marie Miller
Hopefully you are smiling that I asked that and not gritting teeth at me. @Yuvi thx for props. - Cody Heitschmidt
@cody I am smiling. If you haven't learned yet, I'm not that up tight type of girl. ;) - Michelle Marie Miller
"I'm editing his registry file." -- I think a few geeks popped a boner on that one. - Shey
lol @ registry editing :D I have found that the thing that makes most non-geeks go "wow" is Photoshop ;) Atleast, for my friends. Not sure 'bout girls though. - Yuvi
Thanks again Yuvi... I am on a roll huh??? lol!!! Michelle Just posted comment on your blog,.. Is "Brown" upgrade or downgrade from UPS BOY and when will he grduate to JOHN????? - Cody Heitschmidt
@cody He thinks it's really cute I call him Brown. So Brown it is. - Michelle Marie Miller

surprise!! he's a guy... and LOTS of guys love porn! *sigh* - Susan Beebe
Come on Susan. Women like it as well. We are all human. ;) - Mathew A. Koeneker
Just curious for the "FriendFeedati"? This seems like oversharing, and a violation of Brown's privacy...and it seems like everyone encourages it. It's confusing. Why is this OK subject matter? - Robert Seidman
"violation of Brown's privacy" ? whose this dude that is walkingonto this thread waving da privacy flag ? Why is this an "Ok Subject matter"?? firstly the poster is on FF, secondly she's a wonderful person and thirdly MYOB ..solly could not resist the last one ! In all truthfull, if you were following the brown post for over the last 4 wks, you will understand better :)- As such, We are not seeing ./hearing of any violation(s) unless Michelle finds some props in his bedside table. Correct Michelle ?? - Peter Dawson
Peter, so if someone is a wonderful person it is therefore OK to violate someones privacy? Really? You'd encourage that? - Robert Seidman
yeah Robert, you are missing the point. "Brown" is a nik for some1, secondly Brown knows that he is being talked about here. Read the previous threads and you get the bigger picture. However, to directly answer your question,NO it's NOT OK to Violate privacy, even it it comes from a 'wonderful' person. Having said I want to know if finding porn on your sons/daughter computer and posting that finding here is a privacy issue too ? - Peter Dawson
I'm not missing the point Peter, you are. I watched the last month of this by the way (I'm not zooming in at the end). If people were exposing Michelle the way she is exposing Brown, I don't think you'd be OK with it. Yes, I'm saying you're a hypocrite. : ) - Robert Seidman
Michelle, quit snooping stat! Ignorance is bliss!! - Mona N.
robert s., i think Brown was standing right next to her while she was doing things to his computer. :) including finding the porn. - edythe
"Are you tired of your awe-inspiring article, mind-shattering blog entry or rambling anti-government manifesto not getting the web traffic you know it deserves? Did you add a “Digg It” button to that brilliant epic poem you wrote about your recently-deceased cat, Twinkie, but nobody seems to be clicking it? Are you starting to suspect that MS Paint drawing of Draculanana might not be funny enough to make it to the front page of Digg after all?
Think again." - Maki

At first I thought there were no diggs for this cleverly poignant article, but then I removed the "#" from your URL and saw there are almost 1900 diggs so far. - Dave Dugal
No chance that such an article will have no diggs :) - Maki
My mom is a huge Twizzlers fan. I don't see the appeal in them. Not much of a candy person really. Just now thought about that. Wow. (let's that sink in) - Zach Flauaus
Jim, those remind me of these german candies that I really like. - Brandon
I didn't used to like them at all. Somehow they have grown on me. ETA, wow... bad grammar, Yo. How about - I used to not like them very much. However, they have grown on me. - Yolanda
haven't had these in a while -- since minimum purchase is what, 1 pound? ;-) -- but used to enjoy combination of Twizzlers + popcorn. Sugar + salt = win. - Karim
Good n' plenty rocks. So do Mike and Ikes and Hot Tamales. - Thomas Hawk
Those have always been one of my favourites. Never did like the black ones, though. - eve shot first
@Dave doesn't the EXIF data tell that? - Sam Purtill
@Sam, certainly. Wanted to get some insight from Thomas as he shoots RAW. Shooting light sources is, at best, interesting ;) Thomas, also, your thoughts on DNG please since Sam brought up standards. Thanks. - Dave Martin
No flash on the shot. I rarely ever use flash -- sometimes I use it for people shots at an event where light is too low, but almost never for anything else. Have to play with my flash more and learn to do more creative things with it. I don't really use DNG. I shoot everything in RAW, edit from there and then save out to JPG. I think JPG is still more the standard than DNG and think that JPG XR will become the new standard and an improvement over today's JPG and will likely adopt that at some point. - Thomas Hawk
@thomashawk: I've been doing some interesting things with flash recently, trying to avoid blowout. I've tried using a piece of white paper to bounce the flash upwards towards the ceiling, which diffuses it before it reaches the subject. - Thomas B

@Thomas B - what about a Gary Fong Lightsphere? - Tom Quinn
