Your son has a good eye for business, I can tell :)

Terrific! Praise his imagination. I remember being chided by a teacher for not writing '9' in three rows x 3 dots the way she explained it. I did 9 dots in a row. I recall being totally confused by her reaction. Math and I were never the same from that day on.
- Kate Foy
Good for him. As a teacher - an A+ - he understood the objective and went beyond expectations by showing the pattern. All A+ work must have the unexpected element within the lesson - http://www.helium.com/knowled...

Perhaps he got frustrated with the paper's lack of copy and paste functionality.
- Dennis O'Neil
Yes, paper is a lot like the iPhone. No copy and paste (until recently right?).
- Mike Reynolds
Excellent! What was his intention when he did this?
- Leigh
Jesse, my brother teaches high school math, and when I showed it to him tonight he said "Oh yeah, I'd give it 100%" (pssst - between you and me, he doesn't like grading, so less to look at == good ;)
- Micah Wittman
Micah, good to know - I think his teacher kind of felt the same way.

Yunus, no, the reverse counting is due to his dumb father not able to upload images correctly and FriendFeed not being able to re-upload images. I #blamedrewscancer personally.
- Jesse Stay
yeah i was kiddng actually but his reverse 9 and 7s are are also supporting that idea :D cool kid!

I've had a long-term policy towards web pages that move in any way -- I avoid them like the plague. I am a text-oriented person, and I like my text to sit still, so that I can quietly contemplate it.
- Sean McBride
I agree. The new Friendfeed does not help me get information, it crushes me under the relentless pace of items that cannot be read. The old interface at least pretends to be friendly enough that I can read interesting items without rushing to catch them before they vanish.
- Shamir Katsu
Great point Shamir, the speed of the updates is devaluing the input and the quality of the content that can be found.
- Russ Jackson
Ah, how sweet and refreshing is the refresh button. Such a simple and brilliant component of any intelligent and well-designed UI.

"It’s an incredibly simple recipe that you can use to please any bacon lover in your life, even people who are ambivalent to bacon will love it. Those who hate bacon, however, will run in the opposite direction. When my brother tried it he was so overwhelmed that all he could say was “Oh my God!” over and over again."

I don't think I'd like it. I don't have a sweet tooth....
- Ian May
I'd go with a thicker cut, myself, but it's kinda like putting a sweet glaze on a ham, no?
- Derrick
I have a major sweet tooth, but thou shalt not mix sweet and salty in my mouth, with the exception of glazed ham.

Also called, "Pig Candy" in some circles. I sprinkle Turbinado Sugar on mine set out on a disposable wire grill on a Big Green Egg. It tastes like a cross between Honeybaked Ham and Bacon heaven.

I don't know, you guys . . . but that does look kinda tempting in a perverse sort of way . . . <licks lips>

Xbox 360 Registers Biggest Black Friday in Its History: Xbox 360 consoles and games sell at record levels; outsells PlayStation 3 by three-to-one ratio. - http://www.microsoft.com/Presspa...
"REDMOND, Wash. — Dec. 1, 2008 — Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system kicked off the holidays with record-breaking console sales on one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year in the U.S. Retailers reported Xbox 360 console sales over the Black Friday weekend were on pace to beat previous years, outselling the PlayStation 3 by a three-to-one ratio and estimating a 25 percent increase from Xbox 360 Black Friday sales figures from 2007."

I saw a guy buying 6 Wii Fits two weeks ago from the grey market. In India. Wow.
- Yuvi
I have to say wandering around Best Buy on black Friday, it was impressive to see two full aisles of stuff for the XB360.
- Phil G
the XBox 360 is Microsoft's trojan horse towards taking over the living room of tomorrow. Just you watch. They are positioning it to be so much more than a game machine. This will all unfold in the next few years as the cable/satellite industry gets crushed. Stage one is to get as many of them into the hands of the general public as possible.
- Thomas Hawk
XBoxes make great little webservers, once you install Linux on them. ;-)
- April Russo (app103)
Thomas, I have to agree with you. They have already made big strides toward taking away any reason why someone would want to hack the XB360 for additional features. A web browser and/or YouTube (or even Hulu) support is a miss, but otherwise it supports media center, DivX, uPNP, DVD, rip music and games to HDD, the works. Oh, and now NetFlix streaming.
- Phil G
I just bought a used one from a tech friend (price was way right, clean unit), installed it last night, and I was blown away at how great it looks over HDMI. Not only that, but the movie and TV offerings was exactly how I got it passed by the 'finance committee' :D
- Bob M. Montgomery
from twhirl
LOL Matt. Price and, I would add, MS has not announced a new version and the current line is still good for, at least, another year.
- Robert Miller
Shey, not only does a Zune work great, but it even controls an iPod with ease, after installing a tiny free download.
- Phil G
You know, I'd give up my PS3 and switch to XBOX 360 if it could play Blu-Ray discs. Those movies in 1080P and non-compressed audio are just a blast.
- Odi Kosmatos
Nothing can touch how useful the Live! compenent of the 360 is... its simply awesome.
- Soulhuntre
from twhirl
I agree - the 360 is great on a multitude of levels. Can't say I've ever used a PS3, but I also can't say I ever regretted getting a 360. I use it to listen to music while I do things around the house, I use it to show photos to friends, I use it to watch video from my computer on the big screen, now I get to use it for watching streaming Netflix movies... and of course I use it to school chumps in Halo.
- Tom Harrison
@Tom Harrison , how has the Netflix + 360 experience been? worth the Live Gold membership?
- Joel Tanner
XBOX 360 absolutely rocks online.. its what makes it soo much fun! Me and my friends still have the 360 vs PS3 argument, but I just cant justify buying one just to get the typical sony bulls&&t
- Jez Arnold
@Thomas. The noise that the damn thing makes will put most people off using it for anything but games. I bet most consumers don't even realise that it can be used as a media player.
- Paul Grav
Paul, the new units are far, far, quieter than the original ones. Interestingly, when I sent my two original units in for repair, MSFT returned 2 new ones to me that were *far* quieter than the original units. I think they've got the noise problem down now.
- Thomas Hawk
The last one I just received from repair is way way quieter. you don't even notice it running now.
- Jason Shultz
from twhirl
Also, the new desktop OS lets you rip a game to the hard disk, so it's faster and doesn't activate the DVD drive while playing, which results in a lot less noise and heat.
- Kevin Fox
I bought one yesterday, for the game Lips. ;)
- Paul Whitaker
@Joel Tanner $7.99 for Gold + $8.99 for Netflix, I would say that's a fine price for watching streaming movies instantly on my TV. That is especially considering I frequently buy PPV movies from cable, which I won't do anymore. The Netflix video quality is very good, and I've watched 3 movies so far without getting any buffering or lag. My only complaint is that there are many, many, many movies that are not available for streaming.
- Tom Harrison
I remember back when On Demand channels came out - it was quite apparent "on demand" is the future of entertainment (except of course for things such as sporting events, to which there is a significant draw to watching live). Netflix and Microsoft are absolutely on the right track with this. I'd cancel cable TV if I wasn't the only one in the house.
- Tom Harrison
I'd cancel my cable but crappy AT&T forces me to buy TV from them if I want their high speed fiber UVerse internet service. Somehow that seems wrong to me.
- Thomas Hawk
I know. I totally don't want their TV service but am essentially paying for it anyways because I value faster internet that much. I think that they should let me cancel the TV service and just pay for the internet.
- Thomas Hawk
The NXE with Netflix streaming is the best thing to happen to the Xbox in a while. I'm getting so much more use out of it now.. and Rock Band 2 is awesome. The starting price of $200 for the Xbox 360 Arcade must have opened a lot of eyes this holiday season.
- Rodfather
I've heard you can get a u-verse package, then cancel the TV and keep the internet. Haven't been willing to try it myself though.
- invariant - farewell FF
I'm not surprised...I've played both and I love my Xbox 360 even with the latest goofy update that 'Wii-ified' with silly avatar crap...which I ignore. I think Sony just blew it, plain and simple, with that launch.
- Rich Harris
I think it totally sucks that you can't get your Windows Media Player ratings into iTunes -- even when you've told Windows Media Player to write the ratings to the file. Apple and Microsoft could care less about user portability. My ratings are mine. I should be able to have them wherever I want.
thanks Sean, I'll definitely check that out. It looks like it might do the trick. I finally got all 120,000+ of my music tracks into iTunes and now I'm hoping to be able to create a 5 star list that I can use so that I can only sync my 5 star songs on my iPhone, since I obviously can't get all 120,000 songs on a 16 gig phone.
- Thomas Hawk
hmmm.. Music Bridge totally seems to be working. Scratch what I said about Microsoft caring less. :) Really appreciate the pointer Sean.
- Thomas Hawk
Thomas, I'm guessing these are DRM-free since you're moving them from WMP to iTunes. Check Simplify Media to stream any and all to your iPhone. Takes the 16GB factor out of play.
- Kevin C. Tofel
Sounds like you need to dump them all and switch to Linux!
- Trevor Carpenter
Apple doesn't believe that the truth is in the file. They insist on using a database to store music metadata. So freaking 1990s. Apple has always been weak in metadata portability.
- Omar Shahine
Absolutely - bug reports should belong to you as well - consideration takes many forms
- Wes Schadenfreud
I absolutely detest how you can only format your iPod to work on either OS X or Windows which means huge hurdles in file transfers if you can at all

"That is, states are drawn with size proportional not to their acreage but to the number of their inhabitants, states with more people appearing larger than states with fewer, regardless of their actual area on the ground. On such a map, for example, the state of Rhode Island, with its 1.1 million inhabitants, would appear about twice the size of Wyoming, which has half a million, even though Wyoming has 60 times the acreage of Rhode Island."

It's almost faster. But it's basically the exact same thing as it was before, except harder to determine where one UI element ends and another begins. And they've removed the icons associated with the actions. Essentially, this is a downgrade... What the hell is the Hotmail team thinking? Their last 3 "upgrades" have all made things worse. (Reshare from personal feed)

I'm so, so glad that I've moved my parents to Gmail.

It's horrible on the iPhone - everything comes out ultra miniscule, so hard to click on easily without constantly zooming in and out to read it or making boo boos. Couldn't find a mobile version for easy reading.
- Sally Church
It is amazing faster now, compared to its previous version. Gmail is my favorite mail provider, however, hotmail's revamp has given me the reason to use one of my oldest ids again :)
- Karthick R
hotmail is horrible...who even uses it these days?
- Anthony Feint
It works well on my MacBook. Of course my G4 Mac mini does not have the juice to use it well. Will wait for TiVo/Netflix integration.
- Khürt Williams
Shame you'll need Silverlight. I've been avoiding installing that.
- flammable
I tried it on my macbook and it works well but I don't know how much I'd actually use it- good to have the option though
- Eric Truman
"Per VentureBeat's article, I headed to http://www.netflix.com/silverl... and, after agreeing to be part of the beta program, I updated the Microsoft Silverlight software on my computer. One restart of Safari later, and I could add any of the available instant movies or TV shows to my Instant Queue. The offerings were slim, to be sure, but I would expect Netflix to work hard to migrate the rest of their library to offer the same capability. "
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I'm looking forward to this as well. Currently when I want to stream on Netflix I'll browse the catalog in Firefox or Chrome and then paste the desired video's URL into IE for solid viewing. It's pretty silly.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Chris, that's a feature, not a bug. I'll check it out. Thanks.
- Louis Gray
Click on the "Watch Instantly" tab as the primary account holder and you should be able to search the instant library... I think

"A former Republican Secretary of State and one of John McCain's most prominent supporters offered a stunningly frank and remarkably bleak assessment of Sarah Palin's capacity to handle the presidency should such a scenario arise."
- newsjunk.com
"This is what the Republican Party has done to us this year: It has placed within reach of the Oval Office a woman who is a religious fanatic and a proud, boastful ignoramus. Those who despise science and learning are not anti-elitist. They are morally and intellectually slothful people who are secretly envious of the educated and the cultured. And those who prate of spiritual warfare and demons are not just "people of faith" but theocratic bullies. On Nov. 4, anyone who cares for the Constitution has a clear duty to repudiate this wickedness and stupidity."

This is the price we pay for making education a luxury item. Idiots get in power, mismanage the economy and we all lose. If we don't deal with the education problem we will be perpetually hamstrung by a dumbed down media feeding simple soiutions to credulous people at a desperate cost to us all.

The Drobo personal storage solution has been among the most sought after tech tools to hit in the last few years. Thomas Hawk, Scoble and others swear by them. Now, the company is looking for someone who "lives on the Web" and can help manage forums, feedback, etc. for their product. Interested in what could be a very interesting full-time job? Let me know.
- Louis Gray

I love Drobo, but I doubt they could afford me... ;-)
- Stephen Foskett
The company's founder is a good friend of mine, former colleague, etc. If you are interested, or know someone who is, let me know here, or at louisgray@mac.com.
- Louis Gray
where is drobo located? the valley i presume?
- andy brudtkuhl
Andy, they are based in Santa Clara, CA. Given this is a Web-facing position, I'm sure they are flexible on geography.
- Louis Gray
I'd like to talk to them, storage is something we all need.
- paul mooney
Louis, you know how much I make here in Utah - if they're willing to pay the bay area equivalent and move me out there I'd love to talk to them.
- Jesse Stay
I love these devices, I just need to get one on a slight discount :-)
- Chris Miller
Louis, Are they posting this job, or is it more informally listed?
- John Metta
The note from the founder essentially says: "We need to hire somebody who lives on the web and can manage online forums, feedback etc for Data Robotics." So, Paul, Jesse, etc., send me an e-mail to louisgray@mac.com and I'll send your data directly to the CEO.
- Louis Gray
before I start hammering them... :) "I have been looking at the Drobo unit but it has a couple of shortcomings that I am sure a Linux distro must be able to overcome. Firstly, it is a USB device with no Ethernet and secondly it is fairly expensive." http://tinyurl.com/58u6m6
- A.T.
I'd offer, sadly they're selling for an extortionate amount here in the UK and my argument with the dealers ended in a "would you stop a company making more money in a market where they can recoupe development costs more easily" knee jerk reaction of "It's a great product, I just resent paying over £300 for it when I could buy it in the US, ship it and pay import tax on it and still be choosing the cheaper option".
- alphaxion
@silpol - they have an Ethernet add-on device for it now. The new one also has fireware.
- xero
@xero, you would have to talk to the hiring manager and HR on that. I don't work for Drobo, but I can see how the position might be very interesting to some people here.
- Louis Gray
The thing I don't get about the Drobo is that you have to pay extra to get the network connectivity - shouldn't it be there out of the box?
- Andy Davies
Andy, no doubt many agree with you. I don't have their roadmap in front of me, so who knows what they have planned. Whoever gets this job will probably get that answer before the general public.
- Louis Gray
Interesting. I live very close to them... wonder if I should give it a try?
- Uncle CW™
@Louis, all the same I know a few people in the UK who rave about the Drobo so they must be doing something right...
