Great article by Derek Markham on an important topic! FTA: "..One of the not so obvious sides of the "cheap" food prices is commodity price supports from the federal government. You can see this in action at your local conventional grocery store, where about one third of the products contain some form of corn or corn byproduct. It's used because it's cheap, and it's cheap because we spent $2,000,000,000 (yes, that's two billion dollars) on corn subsidy payments last year."

The amazing story of how an innocent person in this country can be framed and false accused of a horrific crime by their ex-spouse, stripped of their parental rights, and go to prison. Think it can't happen here in the US or to someone you know? Think again, and read on.

Prior to Silva's flooring Forrest Griffin earlier this month in Philadelphia, SI.com confirmed that Silva's representatives had spoken with Zuffa about the heralded UFC middleweight champion moving up to heavyweight for the first time in his career. Not only that, they already had an opponent in mind: Frank Mir."

FTA: "The number of large-diameter trees in Yosemite National Park have declined 24-percent between the 1930s and 1990s. The findings are based on a study done by the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Washington. Scientists compared tree densities from 1932-1936 to those from 1988-1999 where large-diameter trees are those with a diameter greater than three feet."

FTA: "The best way to escape the summer heat is to head to the beach; however, you may be putting your health at risk by swimming in polluted waters. A record number of public beach closures prompted by water pollution occurred last year. According to a Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC) report of US beaches, "pollution caused the number of beach closings and advisories to hit their fourth-highest level in the 19-year history of the report." Faulty stormwater and sewage systems are largely to blame for the water pollution closing 20,000 beaches."

From the page: "Christoph Rehage's birthday present to himself in November, 2007, was to go for a long walk. The plan was to walk from Beijing, China -- where Rehage was a student -- to his home in Bad Nenndorf, Germany. An amazing proposition, when you consider the vastness of China. Along the way, he photographed himself. We've all seen those 'picture a day' time lapse videos. But the five minute version of Rehage's epic walkabout, eventually covering over 4,000 kilometers, is in a league of its own."

FTA: "Forget killing birds -- federal scientists think they can save two species with one stone. A plan to revive salmon runs on the Sacramento River might also salvage killer whale populations 700 miles to the north in Puget Sound, a fact that highlights the complex task of managing an enormous ecosystem that stretches from California to Alaska along the Pacific Coast. Declining salmon stocks have put a pinch on the orcas, which are estimated to eat up to 500,000 of the fish each year."
