1. I think that having a minimalist lifestyle is applicable to all manners of life, not just photography. 2. However, in terms of having too much gear, I don't necessarily agree. 3. The author mentions a good point that you should expand your knowledge and not just your equipment. But he is making the assumption that when you expand your camera bag, you don't add any knowledge along with it. And that assumption is flawed imho.
- See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
4. A more valid point would be to say that most people value equipment more than content. I am a firm believer that equipment does not make good photography. A good photographer does. And sometimes you do need the necessary tools to realize your vision.
- See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
Equipment may not be the necessity that we believe we need but it certainly helps.
- Simon Curran
Pareto principle applies to photography too, u use 20% of ur gear in 80% of situations
- Picolo
The key is balance. Don't add more gear until you've sufficiently mastered what you have. Also buy wisely to best match gear capability to what you want it to do. Personally I've never been happier than with what I have right now. I do wish I had a fast wide-angle prime lens, but it will come in time.

Perhaps there is a significant correlation between higher levels of racism and lower levels of education and intelligence. People with weaker minds tend to feel overwhelmed by cultural diversity and complexity. People with stronger minds tend to seek out cultural diversity and complexity.

Dave: Tom Riner is yet another SWMCF (Southern white male Christian fundamentalist). It took me awhile to notice the pattern here: most of the craziness in contemporary American politics seems to be emanating from this particular culture, which is deeply embedded in Confederate and Old South attitudes and traditions. (And to reiterate: I know many great Southerners who don't fit this profile in the slightest.)
- Sean McBride
It's all a rather damning indictment of the education system in this country. Apparently we forgot to teach people about logic and reason.
- Eoghann Irving
But really it's just part of a trend and it's not confined to Kentucky. What about Truthers? What about the people who think we didn't go to the moon? This is what you get if you encourage emotion and discourage logic.
- Eoghann Irving
That hits the hot button with a lot of people, including me. The education our children receive in the US is appallingly poor.
- MVB (Grinch of FF)
Eoghann: The problem with lumping Truthers into the mix is that there is SUCH a broad spectrum of people who are lumped into that category, where Birthers are very specific. Sean McBride you're making a lot of sweeping and unsustainable generalizations there. I believe the 9/11 story and I'm not a republican, nor did I agree with the Iraq War. I find that the simplest explanations are usually the right ones. I guess the question is what do you consider to be the "facts" of 9/11. Facts are independently verifiable.
- Eoghann Irving
I have no idea of how much effort Eoghann and David have invested in mastering the facts about 9/11 as known to date. But here is a good place to start to get an overview of the views of skeptics from inside the government who find the official story to be not credible: Allen L. This list of excerpts (without context) and with minimal facts is hardly very credible to start with. But what's really damning is that it includes a quote from one David Shayler. A man who has claimed to be the son of god, that he has divine powers (and can predict soccer results). That shows a total lack of critical thinking on the part of the author and invalidates the entire thing.
- Eoghann Irving
What could be more illogical than disregarding quotes from hundreds of highly credible experts (visit the original site) on the basis of a disagreement with a single person. They cover literally thousands of facts in their various rigorous analyses of the 9/11 data. The data doesn't come close to supporting the official story.

Eoghann -- on what basis did you oppose the Iraq War? Did you the reject the following claims from the very beginning? (I did): 1. Iraq was collaborating with al-Qaeda. 2. Iraq was responsible for 9/11. 3. Iraq was responsible for the 9/11 anthrax attacks. 4. Iraq possessed WMDs. 5. The Iraq War would be a cakewalk. FourSquare is cool. If I could, I would invest in Yelp. I think they are closer to the real money than Twitter or Facebook is. That means that they will either get purchased, or will go all the way on their own. The Yelp iPhone app is already the best one for location. The rest are just games. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Scoble’s strength as a VC would be bolstered by his ability to pull in outside pieces for mashups and outside marketing/publicity resources to build early momentum. This is something most VCs claim to do, but are really only around to write cheques. However, a role that might fit Scoble better than being a pure VC would be to also direct an incubation garage where he could contribute ideas and solutions on a daily, face-to-face basis.

We're catching up on Torchwood, still in the middle of season one. The hubby said that it reminds him of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Great analogy -- "monster of the week" threats, group trying to stop the baddies, Cardiff is an alien hotspot as Sunnydale was a hotspot for monsters, and there's an overall mythology arc.
The characters are quirky, have great chemistry, and Captain Jack is mysterious. I am liking it a lot.

Revisiting this, now that I've seen all three seasons... I have to say the 2nd season is the weakest. There are a few episodes I really liked, including the first one, with James Marsters (Spike!! :) ), but a lot of the stories in season 2 weren't as good to me as season 1. And season 3 was mind-blowing, a true testament to what good writers can do with just 5 episodes. 24 wishes it...

"The main reason I try to segregate my friends and family from my business contacts is that I don’t want to be responsible for the actions of my network. A while back I had added business contact on FB. I alos have a 17 year old cousin who equates popularity with the number of facebook friends she has so she has a habit of trying to add any of my contacts. Next thing I know my cousin is sending pink unicorns to my business contact and he’s asking me about my cousin’s under-aged drinking. "Interesting topic as always, Doc. I do wonder how much of the hurricane phenomena is based in naming and how much is based on the impact to people. Humans tend to be myopic when it comes to history; Katrina, Andrew, Hugo and Fran all happened in our lifetime. We saw the video and pictures on TV in the case of Katrina, we may have read interdictor’s live journal as it was happening. 1938, OTOH, is something most of us have only read in textbooks and on wikipedia. It doesn’t seem as real. You see this repeated in other areas, the War in Iraq feels “more real” then the American Revolution or WW2 to many folks for the same reason. Interestingly, Gloria will always be the ultimate storm to me because the eye passed over my house (I was a Long Islander at the time). Now it was only a Cat 3 when it made landfall on the Island, but the damage was more real to me then any other storm because it had an effect."
