I've not seen Transformers 2, but anyone who wants to punch it in the face I fully endorse. We should all get a whack yes? Haggis, nice call I wouldn't have even thought of that. Shevonne, why Hollow Man? I don't remember it being totally horrible. Aden, that movie deserved a groin kick. I've never seen Rise or Jane Austen's Mafia...I don't think I will.
- Joe Pierce
I'm seeing lots of deserving punchable flicks here. You all pass the test. I can't decide if I want to watch Hollow Man again to see if I agree with it or not...hmm
- Joe Pierce
at least the Planet remake had an awesome performance by Tim Roth. How in the world have I never seen B.A.P.S.? And why do I now have the urge to watch it? It's like when you have a loose tooth and you can't help but push on it even though it hurts...
- Joe Pierce
Joe, it's going to feel like you lost a tooth after watching B.A.P.S

I don't know. I was once forced to sit through the Bratz movie. Can't be much worse than that.

iRobot - made me want to burn all my Asimov books (no small feat indeed)

Planet 51. I spent 22.25 plus popcorn to see this on Saturday. It sucked all kinds of donkey balls. Nothing but NOTHING worth anything in this movie. It flat out sucked. And I'm very kind to movies usually. I want my money back you shitty, predictable movie making jackasses!
- Morgan Haley
I didn't mind iRobot that much, it had Tudyk in it and I'm very good at compartmentalizing my feelings between movies and books. Morgan, I can't say that I'm surprised. I don't think they expected much out of it which is why they opened it opposite of New Moon. Johnson needs to quit doing kids movies.
- Joe Pierce
Disturbia. I saw it for free, but I want them to apologize for making it. Joe, you HAVE to see BAPS. And make sure you are logged in while watching it. We need to hear all about it. Also, please answer the flip side of Joe's question: http://tiny.cc/s1FWC

Crash (2004) directed by Paul Haggis. It's retarded meditation on race relations for one dimensional people and an unapologetic rip off of much better films, yet since it was about racism in LA it became a media darling and won best picture, even though it wasn't even in the best HALF of movies in 2004.
- veo
Magnolia is a beautiful, beautiful film. It's one of the only movies I know that actually gets better every time you watch it. It's not for everyone though. Incidentally, Magnolia is one of the better films that Crash (above) totally ripped off. Heh

I don't know what you are all talking about, the Bad Boys franchise is fun. Armageddon only sucked mostly, and the Playboy Centerfold video that he directed probably did exactly what it was supposed to.(except it needed more explosions).

if hugh grant is on my TV humorously and absentmindedly wooing some unsuspecting young lady I can tell you where I'll be for the next two hours...son
- Richard Lawler
I like Hugh Grant on film. I do not like him in real life....C'mon, girlfriend like he has and he goes for a prostitute like that?
- Joe Pierce
I ain't fuckin him, I'm just listening to his wonderful english accent.
- Richard Lawler
as I said. I like him in movies, but in the real world I don't think he shows proper judgement.
- Joe Pierce
Oddly enough, I don't remember liking or disliking Magnolia, which probably means I fell asleep in it.
- Adrian
MOON... Jesus that sucked. Not even cute at all.
- Adrian
Magnolia's awesome. And Adrian, you mean Moon that was out this summer with Sam Rockwell? Other than a couple of issues I had with the narrative, I thought it was really good. Certainly much better than the crap that usually passes for sci-fi these days.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Jandy, yeah, that one. Thing is, I had such high hopes for it, but the narrative and the science were just swiss cheese and Sam Rockwell bugged the crap out of me (which disturbed me as I generally enjoy his characters quite a bit). We've come a long way since 2001: a Space Odyssey and no one has come even close... or really tried, in my opinion. 2010 would have been great if it wasn't...

OH MY GOD, I take it all back, every movie I said is forgiven so that I may punch directly in the face THE SIXTH SENSE. It's an hour and fourty five minutes that I thought was two hours and thirty minutes that felt like 3 and a half hours. That movie dragged so much morbid ass they needed to import ass from other countries just to make it.

All M. Night Sham-man films, Napoleon Dynamite, and the Original Wickerman.

Oh Neal, thank you for reminding me. The Village. I would not just punch that one in the face. It would definitely be a kick to the nads, too.
- Chieze Okoye
I knew eventually someone would bring up "Hulk" with Bana. Which I consider the better of the new I-Hulk movies. The new one was really bad and just a cliche comic-book film. Everything M. Night did after the first half of Signs is punchable.

The FriendFeed flaming departure- an episodic in which we profile various online personas and their arc of introduction, infatuation, obsession, anger, frustration, and departure.
Joe, I actually don't blame the community. There are individuals that - during the election period- I learned about in a new way, and I unsubscribed. And blocked. And, problem went away. Whenever anyone has these flaming departures (minus @directeur) I think they just don't know how to use the tool.

directeur left and came back- and in that time he built a new tool that solved the problem that he thought the site had. If that's not a constructive channelling of frustration, I don't knwo what is, lol.

I also don't believe people are "run off" from Friendfeed. I've seen some people delete their account 3 or 4 times and then come back a week later. Attention seekers who love to be fawned over when they make their return.

Some would accuse anyone who uses social media sites like FriendFeed as "attention seekers", and I didn't delete my account for attention, although others may have.

I didn't delete mine for attention either (quite the opposite). Frankly, this post annoys me a bit. Why is frustration and anger any less of a valid reason to leave than anything else? We're not robots (except for Mo, of course).

Also, I fully support Cristo's comment about Wall-E. It sucked. Like a Hoover. ;-)
- Jason Huebel
Jason - Maybe I should clarify - I only have an issue with people who continually jump into divisive arguments, get their feelings hurt, delete their account, wait a week or two, come back with an announcement that they are back, accept fawning, lather, rinse repeat.

There's a little bit of "dish it, can't take it" going on with those peaks, I have to say.

"In performances before studio audiences, foley adds considerable visual interest. A foley walker for such a set-up needs stage presence, showmanship and a good ear. S/he also must know when to give and take stage, for a real hambone working the sound effects can easily upstage the actors. Perhaps that explains why radio sfx personnel in the old days belonged to AFRA, an actors' union. Typically, the foley gear is arrayed on and around a table off to one side of the stage or performance area. One mike covers the table and another the floor. The table mike never sits on the table but is shock mounted on a floor stand high enough to capture vocal effects, such as dog barks, hoot owls, raspberries, gurgles, bubbles and assorted moans and groans. One or two foley walkers, more if needed, do all the live sound effects."

so fun. a fella with this expertise worked on Wall-E. saw a doc about it... he went old-school.
- T. Brent, technopeasant
It's so odd to me that sound is called "foley".
- Spidra Webster
"Foley" gets its name from Jack Donovan Foley (1891-1967), a sound editor at Universal Studios in the 1950's who became famous for his advancements in synchronized sound effects.
- Christopher Harley
I'm aware of it being named after someone. It's funny enough that it's used in film but to retroactively apply it to live theater sound effects is pretty weird.
- Spidra Webster
oops. yes... i'm referring to a film... hope i'm not fraying the thread... :)
- T. Brent, technopeasant
Not at all, Brent. I'm referring to the link. It's applying the term "Foley" to sound in a live theater. Given that that technology existed well before Mr. J. D. Foley, it just sounds odd to me.
- Spidra Webster
No, not at all, Brent. Spidra, I hope it means a return to an appreciation for stripped down theater. Maybe this movement coincides with the revival in burlesque. Could a renaissance in vaudeville be far behind? If that's the case, I'm joining the next Wild West show that pulls into town!
- Christopher Harley
i just moved from Montreal where burlesque and vaudeville are HUUUUGE... in fact, it was on the cabaret/burlesque scene that the dragpiper got her start...
- T. Brent, technopeasant
i was involved in a fundraiser theatre project written by a fella that had a love affair with the old radio shows, and he had a live 'foley' person on stage doing their thing... it was other-worldly.
- T. Brent, technopeasant
Either the Wild West show or I'm going full-on Elmer Gantry!
- Christopher Harley
There's already been a revival of vaudeville sensibilities. Don't know anywhere where they've revived an actual vaudeville format, though. It's hard to imagine modern audiences being okay with the HUGE variety of acts a real vaudeville night used to include. Brent - old time radio is definitely what I think of when I see these contraptions.
- Spidra Webster
if you check the link i posted, you'll see that the early foley guys for cartoons were the same guys working for radio...
- T. Brent, technopeasant
well, if montreal is any indication, there are different approaches to the revival: some are purists, and seek to re-create the acts as they were, or as they understand them to be. others are considered more neo-burlesquers...
- T. Brent, technopeasant
I don't think you have to have exact replicas of vaudeville acts, but I think in order for it to be called vaudeville it has to have the format. Something like 6 shows a day, many acts per show, acts ranging from a soubrette, dog act, knockabout act, comedian, dancers, musicians, etc.
- Spidra Webster
If it were that involved, I'm afraid you couldn't ply an audience with enough cheap alcohol.
- Christopher Harley
@ Spidra... that begs the question of the point at which a revival is indeed that -- a revival. You sound rather purist! Have you attended, or been involved in, any of the current productions?
- T. Brent, technopeasant
I've only gone to some of the burlesque stuff. The locals mix burlesque performance with musical interludes. I don't know enough about vaudeville to be purist about it, I think. But when I try to crystallize what makes something vaudeville instead of just theater or cabaret, that seems to be the format. Great Wall-E link, BTW. I haven't seen the film yet but the sound doc was cool.
- Spidra Webster
I have a really cool metal one. I was convinced I wouldn't have time to do a CD release gig so I sent my basket of misc. instruments ahead in the move. Was missing that during the gig. I totally would have used it during "Me & The Ghost Upstairs".
- Spidra Webster
awesome. still going to have a CD release gig? your kind of act would be very popular in a town like montreal... it would be cool to have a foley-type person there!

"Are we in a golden age of animation? To start, Pixar just keeps getting better and better; critics almost unanimously voted WALL-E the best picture of 2008 -- not just the best animated film, but the best film. And their new Up has racked up nearly equal praise. So far two of the best films I've seen in 2009 are animated features, Henry Selick's Coraline and Nina Paley's Sita Sings the Blues. Coraline was filmed in stop-motion 3D, and Sita was mostly hand-drawn with some computer assist. Filmmakers seem to have perfected 3D this year, not only in live-action features, but in animated features like Coraline, Monsters vs. Aliens, Battle for Terra and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs."

I have no idea, Mike. I honestly don't know that media will last more than another 10-15 years on the whole. If most people aren't doing digital downloads by then, there's something wrong with the system.
- Alex Scoble
How can you know this is a best of breed product when it's not even out yet? Yesterday you were bashing people who give in to marketing hype...
- Kevin Fox
I've been following it for over a year, Kevin. I've read reviews of one of the beta testers. It does things that no other BR player will do. It's Oppo. Oppo kicks ass. Want me to say more? I'm frothing at the bit to buy one. Want me to say more? HYPE! I HAZ IT!
- Alex Scoble
99% of people won't see any difference between this and the PS3. PS3 costs less and also plays games (and does some media serving, etc.) What quality of TV is required to make this a must-have relative to a device that someone may already have?
- LogEx
"True 24p™ Video - Many Blu-ray Discs are recorded at 24 frames per second, the same frame rate as the original movie's theatrical release. The BDP-83 can faithfully redeliver the original frames using 1080p 24Hz output (compatible display required) for smoother motion and a flicker-free, film-like home theater experience. It can also restore the original 24 frames per second progressive-scan video from well-authored DVDs and output as 1080p 24Hz."
- Mike Reynolds
Engadget had a nice hands on review of this and the comments made similar comparisons to the PS3. The differences line in the bitstream audio support and some of the more "high end" features that the PS3 lacks.
- Kevin Kuphal
Robert has hijacked Alex's account, hasn't he?
- John Craft
Hmmm. PS3 has 1080p24 and 4 (I think) USB ports.
- LogEx
My PS3 has four USB ports. (And my TiVo has two!)
- Kevin Fox
How shall I start? The PS3 is a horrible upscaling DVD player. This has the best upsampling solution on the market (Anchor Bay FTW). The PS3 doesn't play SACD. The PS3 doesn't output multichannel analog (for those who have a receiver/preamp with multichannel analog in but not HDMI 1.3. I could keep going, but I won't. This totally kicks the PS3's ass for BR duty.
- Alex Scoble
And the difference is that I'm hyped about a product that deserves the hype. It's TRULY best of breed, get it? This isn't fanboi-ism. This BR player does things that NO OTHER player does in one integrated high quality package.
- Alex Scoble
Seriously, I'm sure its spec sheet is out of this world, but I'm looking forward to reading the reports of unbiased reviewers with production hardware before I judge whether it's worth the high price. I'm not saying it's not a best of breed product, but I look forward to actually finding out.
- Kevin Fox
This is a great player, I've followed it for months myself. I'll keep my freebie Denon for awhile and probably wait for nextgen Oppo, but this was one hardware device I've been drooling over for my home theatre.
- jcunwired
But again, the critical question... What quality of TV is required for the 99% to make this a must-have relative to a device that someone may already have (or one that costs less)?
- LogEx
++LE the playback device is always the critical factor. Neil Young makes a rather impassioned argument about this for the audio side of the world.
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
LE, you are beginning to annoy me. The big difference on this transport vs the PS3 is in the audio codecs that it can handle. So what TV you have doesn't matter...and you'll be able to tell the difference between this transport and the PS3 when playing a DVD on any 1080P TV. But the big difference is when you have a real home theater with a receiver/preamp that is capable of receiving the multichannel inputs from this beast.
- Alex Scoble
LE, there are two types of people when classifying gadgets (especially HT) - those that want the best there is given their budgets, and all the rest. :) Given that, its either a must-have or not.
- jcunwired
Alex, looking forward to your advice when I'm ready to setup the theater room. We break ground on the new home tomorrow - but won't be ready for the home theater for perhaps 1-2 years.

$600?! To view a media format that only has MAYBE 3 more years? Do you have any clue how many handjobs down at the warf that will take?
- Matthew DeVries
Blu-Ray is 4 times the resolution of DVD and also allows for lossless multichannel audio encoding/decoding.
- Alex Scoble
You are smoking crack if you think BR will only be around for 3 years. And it also plays DVDs and SACDs. And plenty of people are buying the PS3, which is inferior in just about every way just for the BR capabilities and it's $500.
- Alex Scoble
Except, I can play PS3 and PS2 and PSX games on the PS3.
- xero
Except, xero, most people that I know that bought the PS3 bought it to play Blu-Ray and not for games and couldn't care less about games anyhow.

from BuddyFeed
Ray, the medium itself is more than 5x the storage capacity. Image quality is 480 interlaced lines of vertical resolution for DVD vs. 1080 progressive for blu-ray. Blu-ray will blow your mind in comparison.
- jcunwired
Matthew, we are seriously 5 to 10 years out from being able to deliver blu-ray quality content on the internet in any meaningful way. Netflix Instant isn't even DVD quality right now.
- Alex Scoble
And like I said, when you learn of a studio switching way from Blu-Ray, let me know.
- Alex Scoble
Blu-ray's not going anywhere. There MAY be an increase in resolution in the next few years, but its going to be a long way off. Not everybody has the available bandwidth to download 1080p content, so the physical medium will be around for a long time.
- jcunwired
If you don't care about quality, we shouldn't even be having a discussion. Be happy with You Tube and illegal downloads where you can hear people munching popcorn.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
ok, 5 years. That's a whole lot of handjobs for only 5 years of use, and a repurchase of all that media. I'll wait.
- Matthew DeVries
And what you all are saying runs counter to what gdgt, engadget, and all the other podcasts say. Microsoft wouldn't have surrendered HD-DVD if they thought there was a future in physical media.
- Matthew DeVries
They backed HD-DVD because it used the Microsoft Codec. Money is in who controls the license royalties.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
LOL, Matthew. Microsoft couldn't keep HD-DVD going without content. And don't bet on BR being the last media based format either. If they come out with a 2160P spec or 4320P spec, it will again out pace any internet based delivery system.
- Alex Scoble
PS3 doesn't have 'True 24p' ? Can the OPPO play AVCHD from SDHC cards directly? That's all I really care about.
- Rodfather
Since it doesn't have an SDHC card reader built in, it can't do it directly. It does however, have USB inputs for hooking up USB storage devices. Still not sure if it can handle that format.
- Alex Scoble
With technology advances in blu-ray pushing more and more layers (up to 200gb if I recall), even at 4320p a full length movie with 7.1 sound will still fit on a blu-ray disk. It ain't going away anytime soon.
- jcunwired
Sorry, it will play that format. So perhaps using a SDHC USB reader?
- Alex Scoble
I assume it support AVCHD through burned DVD's and Blu-Ray, but I would like direct playback from SDHC cards.. since well, camcorders record to SDHC cards.
- Rodfather
Looking at the spec sheet, it says it can play video video through USB, so I guess it works?
- Rodfather
Even if it kicks the PS3's ass, the price point is way too high. While they may not buy the PS3 to play games, the fact is is that it can play games and do a crapload of stuff that this can't. The tradeoff being better upscaling? Not sure that's worth the $200 & no added functionality premium. Does it do Netflix?
- John Rubier
You're all missing the point. This isn't a consumer device. This is another device that a -phile buys to prove how much better their system is than yours. Same people that spend hundreds and thousands on speakers and other stuff that the average person can't tell the difference using.
- Kevin Kuphal
To call the Oppo a super high end product is not correct. Their specialty is bringing quality for an affordable price. I don't understand how you can say all speakers are the same. Really?
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
They're not the same, but in my environment - and I imagine many other people's - spending extra cash on them (like most other devices of this nature), is just throwing it away compared to affordable alternatives.
- Kevin Kuphal
$600 is not an affordable price for something to watch movies with. After a certain point, for the majority of one's listening, speakers are indistinguishable. Perceived speaker quality for most people is logarithmic. Most can tell the diff between a $20 one and a $70, a few less the $70 and $150 one, and almost nobody can tell the diff between the $150 and the $600 one. The same is...
- xero
Kevin, I won't argue the point with you, but you're way wrong. Those passionate about their gear research and compare, and there really is a difference. People don't buy better gear to look down their noses at others, people do so because quality is important. Live with it or not, but you can move along to a thread where you can carry on a quality conversation. :)
- jcunwired
Considering the Denon flagship Blu-ray player is $3800, yes, this is affordable. Where are you finding a name brand $150 Blu Ray profile 2.0 player? If you want to talk DVD's are the same, let's not talk.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
Tad, just like everything I get excited about, it won't be ready for a while.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
Is the movie different with 2.0 vs 1.0? Didn't think so...
- Kevin Kuphal
Eric, don't mind Tad. He'd rather have the compromised quality of modern digital media than better quality delivered on physical media.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I'll wait for a portable 1080p Blu-Ray player. If portable and 1080p is even possible. A PS3 should be good enough for me today, but, I'm still putting it off.
- Rodfather
JC. I'm just not convinced that a $600 player or $1000 speakers can increase my enjoyment to a level worth the extra money. I do the same, research, buy quality components, but there's quality, and then there's levels of detail that, to me, don't really matter for my level of enjoyment.
- Kevin Kuphal
Akiva is right, actually. I don't mind a lower quality video in exchange for not having to own yet another meatspace object. In due time I'll end up with the same quality as what you guys have now with less clutter. I suppose I'd care if I had a big TV and awesome audio system.
- Internet's Tad
Rod, it's fine. I have the Sony BDP-S300 player and won't be upgrading anytime soon. We can't always be on the upgrade cycle. I prefer dedicated players for video. Too much noise from game systems for me.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
Tad, yeah; that's the big difference right there: when you have a 40+ inch 1080/24p flat panel LCD with 5.1 surround sound and blah blah blah, digital media just doesn't cut it on any movie you care about the presentation of.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Tad, I love downloads, but the compromise is too much for a big motion picture experience. I use NetFlix streaming, but only for one off stuff and TV shows.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
Those prices were for speakers, not Blu-Ray players. And it's not a matter of comparison to other high end equipment, it's a matter of comparison to what the average consumer is willing to spend. Yeah, it's a great deal if you were considering the obtusely expensive one. I also wasn't talking about the diff between DVD and Blu-Ray. Anyone can see that difference. I was talking about the diff between 1080p on PlayerA and PlayerB or upscaling one's favorite movie on PlayerA and PlayerB.
- xero
Unless you ripped a Blu-Ray movie to MKV and put it on a HD ;)
- Rodfather
Kevin, acknowledged. Thats a lot nicer way of putting it, thanks :)
- jcunwired
We used to have a huge DVD library, but eventually we realized that almost ALL of it was one off stuff that we never watched again. We've never had a decent home theatre room and there's just too many other things we'd rather spend money on. Eventually I'll be watching 1080p movies while you guys are watching full motion 25MP video or something.
- Internet's Tad
Xero, you are right. The average consumer argument can always be made. Really, good enough is good enough for many. I won't knock that. But, DVD made its way to the mainstream, when VHS was good enough. CRT SDTVs were good enough, but many are buying flat screen HDTVs. I'm saying the average Joe finds the technology eventually.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
@Rodfather. Well said. Right now I'm ripping and transcoding WALL-E DVD to Nero Digital to put on my MythTV video library. I will barely be able to tell the difference and it will take up half the space the full DVD does. Same will likely hold true when I move to Blu-ray. I'll have a basic player for the Netflix rentals but digital is where it's at for me.
- Kevin Kuphal
Eric, yes, they do. And they can do so because enthusiasts absorb the R&D costs on the front line equipment, weed out the stuff that isn't as "good", and promote the stuff that is good. Eventually, the tech gets cheaper due to larger productions and better processes and the average joe gets it in their home at a good price. The process works, I just don't like how excited everyone gets when the prices are still so far above where they should be. I'm just here to bring some perspective to the mix. ;)
- xero
I think you are making a generic argument about early adopter tech when this specific player is putting high end features into a much more affordable player. I say this player is pushing that price point down, not up. Is it too rich for many still? Yes. For those that wanted the high end quality, but not the price, Oppo is bringing home the bacon. Should this player be $50? No, the R&D is still expensive. In 4 or 5 years, when the parts are all carbon copy and cheap, then maybe. It happens to all tech.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
"I just don't like..." So that puts it all into perspective. End of argument :)
- jcunwired
Would be cool if it supported streaming 1080p through the network. That way I could store movies on the desktop, and keep the loud equipment away from the living room.
- Rodfather
Rodfather, cant quite figure that out. Engadget says it does, but the guys on avsforum say thats not mentioned in the manual. That part raised my eyebrows too.
- jcunwired
Interesting w/ the WiFi dongle for Netflix. It's probably only for low bit-rate stuff.
- Rodfather
I'm a big movie buff (own a ton of DVDs) but I just can't get into migrating to Blue Ray - just seems like a dead-end (like most physical media). Digital downloads are my long-term upgrade solution.
- timepilot
I don't own many DVDs except for the ones I use to demo my system. Very few movies, in my opinion are worth watching more than once. Which is why I use Netflix.
- Alex Scoble
That is strange. I can't find the Apple logo. I thought only Apple products produced this level of fanaticism.
- stretta
from twhirl
stretta, there are some real companies out there doing great things that produce this level of fanaticism without the quasi-religious furor and millions of dollars in marketing.
- Alex Scoble
And I imagine that they are working on a cheaper model that doesn't have all the analog goodness. Time will tell.
- Alex Scoble
huh huh huh you said anal...goodness /beavis
- Matthew DeVries
I'm on the fence for getting this, by the way. I'm not sure I can really afford it right now and we just aren't watching enough movies at home to make it worthwhile. I'd be saving $100 buying it now, but there's no sense in going broke saving money.
- Alex Scoble
Even less sense going broke saving money on something you likely won't use at all by next year.
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
Heh, Chris. You are smoking some good herb, but that's ok.
- Alex Scoble
I don't think so, but I don't even know what Viewmaster is.
- Alex Scoble
from IM
Wow...did I totally just walk in to that one. *gobsmacked*
- Alex Scoble
LOL!! I wondered too Alex. Hadn't heard Viewmaster for a very long time. I think our cogs both clicked into place at about the same time.

We've been running a higher than normal number of "hot deals" posts in the past week, and I apologize in advance for another one. Best Buy has quite the bundle for the PS3, however, and I thought it was worth passing on. Right now you can pick up the 80GB model of the hardware for $399.99, and you also get a copy of LittleBigPlanet and a Blu-ray copy of Wall-E. While some may be tempted to call this some kind of family pack, real men know that they don't have to hide their love for cute platformers and robots with a cockroach for a best friend. Those are two very solid pack-ins for the bundle, and if the Mole is right—and the Mole usually is—this is another stop on the path to getting the 80GB model out of inventory to make way for the Slim in the fall. I can see people waiting for the price drop that has been rumored for so long, but if you want to jump in and start living life, this is a good deal. Thanks to Joystiq for the heads up.

"Clean up after yourself, don't abuse your planet...and Steve Jobs designs the future."
- xero
Ok. I knew the message, but I just don't get it. I would like to live on the magic future cruise ship surrounded by robot attendants and have one of those magic floaty chairs. If trashing the planet is the fastest way to get me there...well,let's start burning some rain forests. I feel like the humans in the movie made a very bad decision to come back to the wrecked earth.

Pixar's commercial track record ballooned to a sensational ten for ten with the release of Up. The adventure comedy swooped in with a $68.1 million start on approximately 6,700 screens at 3,766 sites, handily perched atop a weekend. In the pantheon of Pixar debuts, Up slots in third place, behind The Incredibles and Finding Nemo and ahead of WALL-E, which opened to $63.1 million last year.

Watching Wall-E with @sofoolycoolly. Am I a big nerd cuz I just got excited over the #Macintoshstartup chime? Yes, yes I think I am. - http://twitter.com/Brett_P...
something irritates me about this movie. I liked it there is no doubt about that. But i took the kids to cinema to enjoy the movie and they were a bit irritated because they could not connect.
- Mycaptain
It had a very slow start. I was afraid I wouldn't like it, but once it picked up I loved it. I think the people disturbed me and the overall bleak future of humanity was unsettling in the beginning
- Lindsey is Fierce!
Loved it, and the music was great. I could watch the dancing sequence over and over again.
- Timothy Griffin
I loved Wall-E. I did keep thinking about Silent Running the Bruce Dern classic with similar message about our future if we don't take care of the our planet blah blah blah. Still, Pixar can do no wrong. Lots of great moments.
- paisano
Besides, if you ask me it looks as though they took Johnny-5 and put a box around most of him and that is how they came up with Wall-E's design.
- Joe Pierce
Actually they just put Johnny 5 into a trash compactor..and Wall-E came out.
- CW™
If Johnny Five gets a cameo in Terminator: Salvation...I can die happy!

Johnny Five is going to be the one to disassemble Skynet.

Wake up, America! When it comes to Wall-E PC casemods, the Russians are beating Uncle Sam like a rented treshchotka. The strikingly artificial-life-like PC case you see before you is the result of a painstaking process of tooling, dieing, machining, and other processes I don't know about because I'm not mechanically inclined and I can't read Russian. It's all documented in 19 photo-heavy pages on a Russian casemodder site, which I alert the authorities to here, for purposes of national security. Yes, I'm a hero. Keep your medals, CIA, and start working on a Wall-E casemod worthy of the red, white, and blue. The American red, white, and blue, I mean. Not the Russian ones.
Why use lists when the people I subscribe to are the ones I want to see? Only reason i have lists is to see specific people that I like to follow and catch up with at the end of the day. Kind of like RSS.

FriendFeed as the same potencial than Diigo and the same problem: not easy to use...
- António Teixeira
How dare you tell me how to use FriendFeed! (Except that you're right, of course; time to address my lists usage.)
- Akiva Moskovitz
I think that we have to introduce segmentation in our reading :) it is fun and exciting :)
- abdellah
I would like the icons back saying what type of service the post is from...possibly in the bottom right corner of the avatars.
- Paul Arterburn
My parents will hate how active the page is - the next generation, who go at the pace of Wall-E, will eat it up
- Christopher Galtenberg
haha, yeah I need to up my game in the lists - haven't had to use - but now I will. But I love it!
- Tony
That's dangerous. Lists require lots of thought, work, organization. If there's one thing we know from running Grazr, people do not want to do that (well most non-organization obsessed people). I think essentially forcing the use of lists is a big mistake for broader adoption.
- mikepk
so what's the first thing to do that's going to slow this down?
- Todd Jordan
I don't mind the speed, but I think there are more elegant things they could do with the UI during live updates (ie: fading to/from colors) and of course letting the user control speed of updates and UI effects.
- Ryan Stanley
when he name list, it mean filtering :)
- abdellah
Hmm... a few rooms (feeds now?) I created seem to be missing or just not easy to find. Will check out the tour to see if I'm missing something
- Dave Ferrick
the one problem with the speed is that what you are scanning suddenly jumps off the page. perhaps a way to "pin" what you are reading temporarily...
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
woah neddy.....wouldn't tabs for search terms in the main page be a good idea...
- Paul Fabretti
Yikes, is there a pause button somewhere?
- Sally Church
This mega-threaded replies really do float to the top.
- Andrew Leyden
needs a keyboard shortcut for pause. Or a contextual gesture (like hovering over some part of a story). Having to scroll to the top to pause is clunky
- mikepk
Weird when what you're reading wobbles because there are things going on above it - if the L&F remains, we can dub this the 'newquake' :)
- Christopher Galtenberg
I worried that the new oh my god it refresh so fast kill the conversation in FF, I havn't to worry robert thread will be there as long or may be longer then ever
- abdellah
I can't WAIT until the twitter-only crowd starts bitching about all of the friendfeed meta convos that are "cluttering up" their twitter streams
- Marco(aureliusmaximus)
@Thomas, thank you, thank you! I was getting dizzy just trying to read anything. I hate the fugly UI and the RT speed. Going back to Twitter, at least one can read in peace at own pace there.
- Sally Church
dave!! do you want to read your FF list in an rss reader?
- abdellah
It pays to be a newbie right now I guess. The speed is to slow. I actually appreciate it being slow right now, gives me a chance to better understand it
- Russ Jackson
Yeah, I have my list paused now. I think we will get used to it anyway. It is fun to watch so many different reactions in so little time.
- Carlos Lorenzo
Have to say -- the message threading is now very nice indeed. Love the automatic update of comments, too. As I typed this, a couple others came in and didn't disrupt. Sweetness. Now I need to learn about lists.
- Anthony Baker
This is really nice so far..liking the realtime comments -DMs are a great addition. Time for more exploration :)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I said the same thing, but then everyone told me I gotta use Filters instead....
- Bwana ☠
Lists are king :) Also, just figured out that ROOMS ---> "FEED" - everything is a "feed" type now
- Susan Beebe
Your green aura frightens me, Mr.Grinch.
- Terence
As I'm one who thinks the quality of interaction went down when lists were added, being forced to make more lists doesn't seem a positive.
- Todd Hoff
I thought the whole point of FF was that you didn't have to "learn" a lot about the interface in order to enjoy the experience. Lists kinda ruined things for me, so if that's the only way to enjoy the new FF, I guess I won't be.
- Jennifer Dittrich
David: I am using Safari as my FF client. Jennifer: that's never been true. This is a lot easier to learn than the old interface.
- Robert Scoble
This will force me to better use lists...
- Seth Meranda
You are the Captain Ahab of social media, Robert. ;-)
- Chris Baskind
The problem is using lists more actually decreases conversation IMHO. I dunno.....
- Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ
There's also the pause button at the top of the page to stop the auto update.
- John F Morton
Yep, agreed. Learn to use lists, use filters, ya gotta learn that sooner or later. I had to do it in Facebook some time ago.
- Tom Parish
Do you have a formulas that you use for your lists?
- Ed Entrepreneur
The filters are only marginally useful. I don't see any way to filter stuff out of a feed. The options for searching/filtering seem just too basic to be any real use.
- Brian Sullivan
Robert, if this is how you've been following Friendfeed ever since you've started, you've become my personal hero. Either you have superpowers or you were born in Krypton.
- Jordi Soler
from twhirl
you need the pause button accessible from anywhere on the page. I'm 70 plus comments down on this conversation and the screen keeps pushing it down and makes the screen "jittery" to keep your eye on what you are reading. Because the screen is moving fast, you probably need 'comment' 'like' and 'hide' links on each nested conversation on anything over 30 comments
- Lou Paglia
now robert may we ask you to share with us some tip about list?!!
- abdellah
Brian: what would you like to see in filters?
- Robert Scoble
if you think the new FF is too fast, stop trying to follow Scoble's threads ;)
- Ryan Stanley
I'm gonna start on the lists :) Way too fast.
- Roberto Bonini
Any way to pause on an individual user's page?
- Aaron Fowler
abdellah: you need to build lists around interests and personality types. So "noisy jerks" go in one list "quilters" go in another "posts lots of bacon" goes in another "tech geeks" goes in another. Jordi: my life has been real time for more than a year now. This takes it to a new level, though.
- Robert Scoble
I would like to see negative searching for one thing -- I want to see everything that doesn't have LOLcats in it for example.
- Brian Sullivan
we need a keyboard shortcut for pause. Would help read comments, etc
- shaun mclane
We asked for ways to better track our discussions - and now we have an improved version (due to convenient link).
- Mike Reynolds
@Brian Sullivan search for cats -lolcats should eliminate them from your results
- Ryan
robert, I was thinking like hope that some will not screw the schema of filtering, notice that when we filter using keyword some will may probably try to target some keyword in their feed title .
- abdellah
Robert - yep - this definitely is not for the faint hearted. Must be on crack to use this! LOL
- Susan Beebe
It's an interesting interface. I'll be looking to see if conversations can still occur with this type of flow.
- AJ Kohn
Im curious Robert how many subscriptions do you show under your Subscriptions box. I have 9 and than 90 more.
- Russ Jackson
'welcome to my world' ha ha. i think with all the love the RS gives friendfeed on a regular basis it only made sense to improve it
- AJK
Agreed. I'm going to have to learn to make new feeds to keep using this. Also, I may have to do something to get rid of this light grey background.
- Ted Roden
Would you agree that after clicking on the more link there needs to be better organization of that page or can that be organized through lists as well.
- Russ Jackson
I need to be able to post updates from a list if they're going to be encouraging me to use lists.
- Jesse Stay
The lists/filters system is too complicated
- DarknessFalls
The problem is that lets say a video is shared, and I'm watching the video - the page keeps going down, and I can't finish watching the video inside FriendFeed! That's not sharing, is it?
- Daniel Brusilovsky
My problem is the lists and the filters create more feeds which create more need for more organization.
- Russ Jackson
@Daniel Good point. Perhaps they could open Videos (and similar stuff) in a modal window, allowing the content to scroll ?
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
I think if they auto-pause the UI while I'm mousing over it that might help. It wouldn't need to pause long, just a few seconds.
- Matt Griffith
I don't foresee myself being a pioneer on the new FFeed, so hoping to see some interesting articles now that the embargo time has passed
- AJK
Just clicked pause for a minute but the counter for queued items doesn't show!
- Damian Holmes
Another suggestion on the new real-time updates. Give me keyboard shortcuts to pause the feed. Using my mouse is too slow in a fast-moving feed.
- Jesse Stay
There's alot to complain about FriendFeed and it's UI. Still has alot of problems to address.
- Chris Rodgers
I think the number of comments went from zero to +100 in les then 45 minutes.
- Peter van Teeseling
Ryan -- the "-lolcats" search doesn't do that from what I can tell -- it returns an empty feed. I would also like to be able to search for posts having less than a certain number of likes/comments as well as more . I would like to be able to set up searches/feeds for complex expressions ("-lolcats and -loldogs" or "-lolcats and -loldogs" from a group of people with more than 10 likes and 0 comments for instance).
- Brian Sullivan
I Can only image a multi-column FF layout...
- Greg Lato
it will happen Greg... has to... would probably actually lessen the jitter effect
- Christopher Galtenberg
UI Tweaks, please: keyboard pause, pause button/key on every page with live updating, comment link at end of comments
- Aaron Fowler
I love how fast it is going. It's really real-time.
- Peter Kruit
Needs a "slow it down" toggle - maybe a slider for the speed?
- Jesse Stay
OMG! I see why you bought a separate monitor.
- LeighaB
or we have the option of ignoring ff just like twitter gets ignored when I tried to reciprocate even a portion of the followers
- Susan Reynolds
@Leigha: Yeah, I can definitely see the need for another monitor for this version of FF. I'm considering it myself.
- AJ Kohn
OK, Now I see how the lists work. Much easier to manage.
- LeighaB
FriendFeed should take that as a sign - you shouldn't *need* a second monitor to use their service.
- Jesse Stay
@Jesse: I view this as a better way to access the data flow - which is what I believe FF is at the end of the day. Why not have a separate place to conduct my data queries while I do other things?
- AJ Kohn
@Brian The negative searches work, but you can't just search for "-lolcats". That's just a blank search. Try "cats -lolcats"
- Aaron Fowler
For Twitter, the only way I listen in is via search.twitter.com or pure luck. Or via FF for that matter. I view more Twitter content on FF than on Twitter itself.
- Mike Reynolds
Brian, yeah I badly want to filter out lolcats too; -cat friends:maverickny seems to work so far
- Sally Church
Yeah following 11.5k people is hard. I really need to use lists
- Nicholas James
Andrew Leyden is totally right. It's like IRC.
- Ian Betteridge
one of my favourite descriptions of twitter: "like IRC meets the whole world"
- Dean Whitbread
I'm sorry @scobleizer but your world must die ;)
- A.T.
I use lots of lists and filters - I'd love to TURN OFF the real-time updating, please.
- Bill Sodeman
I could use a tutorial on how to use lists but do not have the time anyway :o)
- David Gross
the new friendfeed filters are awesome. even better than friend lists.
- Mike Bruder
by the time i have made a list, this page would have vanished :)
- Tatty Gibson
I'm back home & trying to catch up with what's up with the new FriendFeed - I'm assuming it's now live?? Also, I'm not noticing things moving too fast... is that because I'm not following as many people as many of you???
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
ill admit friendfeed looks pretty damn compelling. certainly complex at first blush.
- doubledrat
Moving people from out of my home feed to a different list one at a time is extremely slow. If there's a way to move people out of a list and into a different list in bulk, I haven't found it yet.
- Chuck Baggett
Is there any way to select almost everyone on your home list and move them to a different list in one operation? (Similar to how you can checkmark hundreds of messages in Gmail and perform an operation such as tagging or archiving on all of them at one time.)

Depends on the upbringing and sibliings etc. Oh, and btw, you don't seem to want we pre-trained ones to begin with, only when the obviously not trained go all screwy. Just sayin.
- Michael W. May
from twhirl
No way. All men should be pre-trained to be sensitive, understand hormones, thoughtful, romantic, help around the house, and be aware. Also, they men should be required to read "Twilight" - Edward is all of that and then some -- girls love him because of his qualities, not looks!

Mona, Most females are set up with this ideal of a prince charming. We think relationships should be totally perfect, but that is not reality. Joel is my perfect mate, but, I know we both do things that annoy one another. No relationship will be 100% perfect. You have to weigh the good and the bad.
- Michelle Martinez
Wouldn't pre-training take away half the fun of building the relationship?
- Kevin C. Tofel
Logical LOL MWM and Michelle - agreed. But MAN inefficiency and repeating myself EXTREMELY challenges my patience. It's come to a point where I refuse to utilize my creativity to 'communicate'. Most of my EXs call me "cold". I prefer "rational" And yes, Erin. Edward -sigh- @Kevin - I am not looking to change a man... :(
- Mona Nomura
from IM
Mona said "I am not looking to change a man..." I say: good because your chance of success is between slim and none. The key is finding someone who cares enough about you to respect your needs enough that they're willing to work at meeting them. Even exceeding them from time to time. ;)
- Kevin C. Tofel
Mona, I repeat myself all day. I *hate* nagging, but I do it. My mom and I had a discussion about this last night. Men listen differently. Not saying it is okay, but I have found that this is the way it is. And even as the uber feminist I am, I have learned to accept it.
- Michelle Martinez
hmm..so because a man doesn't met your expectations, or matches those of a fictional character from a subpar author, he is dismissed out of hand?
- Nick
But see, guys are like that in the beginning, Kevin. Then toss in 'reality' and all that goes out the window. I know it's a two way street (I'm more irritable, etc) but still. How many times do I have to repeat myself! >:( @MM - I'm told I'm like a 'dude' ie: I don't over analyze, take things as it is, and mean what I say - no hidden meaning. What happens with me, is the guy ends up all emotional (angry, upset, etc) and I stay rational. Hence, 'cold'
- Mona Nomura
It is a 2-way street... in a successful relationship. Sorry to continue the metaphor, but a One-Way Street relationship is a Dead End. The respect levels have to balance and that balance needs maintenance over the long term. Maybe I'm just an irrational optimist? :)
- Kevin C. Tofel
I agree, depending on what kind of training you're talking about.
- Jim Hearts FF
Nick - My Edward references are not serious. Otherwise, I would be delusional. There is no man like him that exists. And Stephenie Meyer is no Shakespeare but they're easy to read. And that is what makes them so addictive.
- Mona Nomura
some of us ARE well-trained - but, yes, it took about 30 years to get us this way
- William Harryman
The most difficult thing with men (or in a relationship) is finding a balance. Where do you draw the line to determine how much to give and receive? Maybe it's an issue with me. I tend to choose the selfish ones. Ugh.
- Mona Nomura
from IM
RE: balance. Since nobody's perfect, here's the equation I keep in mind: the success and length of a relationship is directly proportional to the amount of tolerance you have for the other party. It's easy to like the "good" attributes of someone. It takes effort to tolerate the "less desirable" aspects. My $0.02. ;)
- Kevin C. Tofel
And with that, I have to drop. Everyone here is sleeping and I'm trying to collect everything from my brain and put it all into Things for Mac. It's a GTD weekend, don't ya know! :)
- Kevin C. Tofel
Mona, I'm going to set you straight on all this as soon as I'm done emptying the dishwasher (unprompted).
- Bruce Lewis
Kevin - Maybe it's a personal issue. I am definitely not saying my sh*t doesn't stink but I am reasonable and agreeable. It's just at times I am too accommodating, which commonly results to it being detrimental (to me) -sigh- Boys suck. LOL Bruce!
- Mona Nomura
from IM
I see you as a very opinionated, strong, independent young woman, none of these things are bad, but some men find this threatening and label you as cold. That's their loss tbh.
- Nick
Funny, isn't it, how the qualities that are found attractive at first are my biggest faults. :)
- Mona Nomura
Mona, You don't have to compromise who you are, I never have. You may have to give a little in other realms, but don't change who you are. And I agree with Nick, it is their loss.
- Michelle Martinez
All women should come pre-trained. Especially if they're over 30. Period.
- Akiva Moskovitz
OK Mona, let's start with finding a less selfish guy. You need to be in a position to observe his behavior. What does he *like* to do, what does he *like* to talk about. How much pleasure does he get out of making other people happy. The black box that takes situations as inputs and outputs emotion is called the "heart" and that's what you have to look at.
- Bruce Lewis
Suppose the input is a situation that makes someone else the center of attention. If the output is sour, that's not a heart you want to be close with. If the output is positive, you've learned something good about that heart.
- Bruce Lewis
I'm a 40-year-old married guy with three daughters. Makes me instinctively protective of young women, so I'm trying to help you out. And, sorry to say, you're geeky so I'm using a metaphor that helps my geek side understand this stuff.
- Bruce Lewis
The most important thing in assessing someone you're interested in is noticing the way they act toward other people. He may be interested in you and putting on an act, but nobody keeps that act going indefinitely.
- Bruce Lewis
Damn, Bruce. You were INDEED speaking in terms I definitely understood. Got my hopes up a little haha. My ideal man is Wall-E + Edward. And both are fictional characters, one an animation even. Can we say DELUSIONAL? haha! And definitely agreed about the way they act towards others - especially servers and such at restaurants. ;)
- Mona Nomura
Are you writing this down? Moving on to talking about your needs with a guy you're involved with. Really practice saying things of the form "When you do X then I feel Y". Avoid "You need to do X" and "You should know to do X without me asking". True? Probably. Helpful? No.
- Bruce Lewis
And here's the sad reality: Guys enter a relationship seeking comfort and safety, so we want women to use a gentle, kind tone of voice with us even though we don't always use such a tone ourselves. And yet you can't say, "Hey, you don't like it when I talk to *you* that way. What makes you think you can talk to me that way?" You have to say, "When you use that tone with me I feel threatened."
- Bruce Lewis
Backing up temporarily to how they treat others - yes, servers at restaurants can be an indication. But the best data you can get is how they treat their roommates.
- Bruce Lewis
People like your spontaneity and expressiveness, but when you're feeling mad because he doesn't know what you like you pretty much have to quash that feeling, smile, and say, "You know what would really make me happy?" And after saying it you can repeat that same question, with the answer being "If next time you remember what I like" keeping the smile on the whole time.
- Bruce Lewis
Does this stuff sound palatable, or is too far removed from what you want to do?
- Bruce Lewis
Bruce LOL! You're like my own personal relationship therapist -- even if I am not in a relationship haha! And I will definitely keep this advice with me if and when I get into my next one. ;) Thanks for all the advice but the real question is: do you follow your own? :P
- Mona Nomura
from IM
I don't always follow my own advice, but I married someone who tells me straight out when I'm messing up, and that helps. The training is ongoing. :-)
- Bruce Lewis
LOL That's communication, Bruce! :)
- Mona Nomura
from IM
Yeah, what you communicate and how you communicate it is the whole ball game. "When" matters too. Sometimes I'm not ready to hear something, same with her. Timing is key.
- Bruce Lewis
Like all proud animals training just breaks our spirit.
- Moved to Facebook
Pre-trained in what, though? I need to know the training regimen for my two sons.
- Martha
potty trained? I'm still working on it.
- Mattb4rd
It will never be enough...just when you think you have the formula, women will find a flaw! To be human is to to be in-imperfect!
- Ferwin
from Nambu
Potty trained? Definitely. Trained by other women on how to deal with me? Probably not gonna help.
- nakachi
I've been wishing for decades that more women would train their sons properly. Every now and then, I'll run into a guy who says his mother trained him right. I think most parents take the "boys will be boys" approach. Of course, my thinking may be biased by what I observed around me.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
yes, but the only way to train them is with the help of a woman ;-)
- Duncan Riley
Guys think to the point, Women think around the point. For example the classic "Are you okay?" and the women says yes with certain tone. We hear yes so we think 1) You want us to leave you alone or 2) You are okay. Which usually is not the case. When people talk about relationships I go back to that question. I personally suck at it cause I'm like a dense wall with women sadly.
- Shawn aka ringking
The problem isn't that we don't come pre-trained, its that every woman has a different set of rules. >:P

While many of us wish we lived in the world promised to us by the sci-fi movies and shows we grew up with, so far, here in the 21st century, we have a robot that sort of vacuums an uncluttered living space and runty humanoid toybots that make fart jokes. Hey, it's a start. But for those of us with vivid imaginations, and a few handily-available tech-savvy pals, we can at least build replicas of the bots we grew up with. In a group, you'll feel slightly less ashamed as you find yourself carrying on conversations and imagine intergalactic adventures with your home-built mock-ups of R2D2 and the Dalek mutants from Dr. Who. You obviously don't need to be part of a club to build a sci-fi robot replica, but it's more fun that way. And most every robot that you'd care to make: R2D2, Daleks, B9 from Lost in Space, Wall-E -- they all have avid building clubs. Some of these clubs are virtual, online communities that share technical help, building tips, parts, and support, others are local and...

I care about baseball records and a fair playing field.
- Rodfather
That's exactly how I feel about it, Spidra. It's called cheating, but nothing serious happens when you do it. You should be terminated/banned. People would probably stop juicing if their career was actually at stake.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
If everyone is doing it, the playing field is as fair as it gets. No such thing as fair anyhow. If life was fair than ANYONE could become a Barry Bonds or Yo Yo Ma and we know this is simply not true.
- Alex Scoble
"You should be terminated/banned. People would probably stop juicing if their career was actually at stake." That what happens now, doesn't work
- Johnny Worthington
I agree with Spidra. Either you get society as a whole to stop valuing sports, which would lead to a WALL-E-like society, or you follow Spidra's idea :P
- Ed F
Johnny's right. Just look at the money. If a player think steroids are the difference between a few years in the minors and a shot at the pros, who cares if they may get banned for life? They don't have a big league career NOW.
- Richard Lawler
I care. If you endorse cheating in baseball you endorse it everywhere. Too many seem apathetic to the pursuit of true excellence. And that's what we are all robbed of when people cut corners. So what if he had the SAT answer key and you didn't, right? So what if he blackmailed the boss into a raise, right? So what if that hacker had your banking passwords?
- AJ Kohn
Johnny, maybe I missed it, but I haven't seen any athletes pay any consequences from juicing.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
You must not have looked, if you think athletes who juiced = A-rod, then you don't know the whole picture.
- Richard Lawler
Not all 'athletes' play baseball, egghandball or basketball... Mariam Jones anyone? :P
- Johnny Worthington
Some sports are handling it better. NBA banned Chris Anderson for 2 years after testing positive for a banned drug (don't know what it was, but it wasn't steroids). He's back now, but coming back after a 2 year absence isn't easy.
- Rodfather
@Rah: Cycling has a standard 2 year ban on the first offense and has stripped riders of wins after testing positive.
- AJ Kohn
True, Johnny, but we're talking about the sports where juicing carries no real penalties or consequences :)
- Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
Rah - which sport are you talking about? I don't think it exists.
- Richard Lawler
Then that is an issue with the sport's governing body. I pay cold hard cash to watch sporting events and I expect a fair game, regardless of the result. If I want to watch my team slaughter an opponent, I'll buy the video game and play on easy. And the consequences are rarely financial, the are suffered physically later on in life when people have forgotten you. And on Alex's point, life isn't fair, that's WHY they take drugs. How good would 'Player X' would be without drugs...
- Johnny Worthington
, and is his place at the expense of someone who hasn't? THAT isn't fair.
- Johnny Worthington
That's actually what makes life fair. Those of us who work hard at any given sport will reap the fruits of our labor, and depending on your style of training, you just might be as effed up as those who doped up (labral muscle tear ain't good at 18....) but overall, the consequences of doping up are worse o.o
- Ed F
If we were talking about shoes that made you run faster, or swimsuits that make you swim faster (which we've already seen) it would be a different story. We're talking about drugs that have all sorts of known damaging side-effects. As the father of a young hockey player my daughter wouldn't be involved at all if I thought the only way she could be successful would be to take drugs. How many of you would drug your kids to help them succeed? These athletes should be kicked out and lose their records.
- Kenton
All I'm saying is that these steroid users don't pay a price for their cheating. We find out, it gets all over the news, people complain and call the person a cheater, but I really haven't seen any action. Some athletes have had things taken away, but they seem to be the minority. (I'm talking mostly about Baseball, NBA, and NFL)
- Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
Baseball has been far harder on Pete Rose than they have been on steroid users. Sure he was unethical, but the success he had on the field didn't come from his gambling it came from his talent. How do we know that anything A-Rod accomplished was from talent and not drugs?
- Kenton
The thing about baseball, steroids/HGH weren't on the banned list back then. So they can't ban them for something that was allowed.., but instead, drag their name in the mud.
- Rodfather
@Rah: The major sports are greedy wussbags who are complicit in exacting as much money out of their 'product' as possible. As such, I've become less and less enamored of these sports in the last 15 years. It's just not that fun.
- AJ Kohn
Sports will always be more understanding of people who cheated trying to win than anything that would suggest someone throwing a game. It's almost assumed you're going to try to break the rules to your advantage.
- Richard Lawler
Yes I care. Steroids have no place in any sport. Entertainment has nothing to do with it.
- Kevin Whalen
I say let the past be in the past and start fresh. Everyone complains about Bonds and Clemens but who knows how many of those other past heroes "cheated". If baseball doesn't move on, they will be doomed to relive this OVER AND OVER AND OVER.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
Rah: not once your average baseball player's neck started getting bigger than mine, no.
- Steven Perez
