A wave-gmail integration sounds like quite the challenge. Perhaps the real-time text updates will happen and will be useful, but I can't see the conversation fragmentation of Wave being a good thing for Gmail.

There was shortage of wave invites when it came out but now people are waiting to give wave invites. I didn't see any of my friends returning to wave after they used it once. I log into wave everyday just to see if there are any improvements.

Paul - Great insights! I too feel Wave is most suited as a team collaboration / productivity tool. The biggest hurdle is loss of context and convo structure. Once the wave team better organizes the UI, then it can go mainstream. Wave integration with gmail would be super cool and highly useful, plus it greatly would speed up user adoption.

"The chronological flow of the conversation is lost." That's exactly the issue. Playback tries to address it but doesn't quite. I think there are other ways to do this, that will be tried both inside and outside Google. I'm thrilled that Google didn't force the Wave team to be part of Gmail from the start, because that would have added all kinds of unnecessary constraints. This way Wave can try lots of new stuff and Gmail can adopt what sticks.

Also, I think the linearity problem will be addressed when they can figure a way to easily mark the new replies so that you can quickly see them - maybe in some from of selectable overlay or view of the wave

Don't we think they should merge Gmail and Wave because we don't check our waves as often as our emails? What if we all had a cross-browser and mobile notification system for both Wave and email? No, I think Google should merge Gmail and Wave because many times in the middle of an email conversation I wish I had wave functionality. Because the conversation has gotten hard to understand and I want to play it back. Because different subthreads have different people on them for no good reason. Because an idea has turned into a proposal and the words aren't quite right.

Here's a specific type of merger I think could work. Wave "merges" with Gmail, GChat, and Docs, in that whenever you create an email/IM/doc you are creating a wave. Anyone can see that wave in its full realtime nonlinear glory from the product Wave. Any wave you have (whether started from Docs or email or...) can be seen in Wave. But Gmail, GChat, Docs, etc. provide only some functions...

I am not so sure about Gmail or Gchat and how you would integrate them-- as Wave seems to have similar and some cases superior functionality that supplants them but being able to collaborate on the production/editing of Google docs in real time perhaps using Google voice conferencing would be nearing a game changer.

That would be great, Daniel. But I think it would require *a lot* of work for some teams at Google and some good explanations to users. I'm sure we'll find specific usages for Wave. Personally, I would let the service grow by itself, without complicating other services. Imagine if I start a Wave and some of my friends participate in it through Docs, some other from Gmail: many troubles...

In the past couple of weeks, the tap water at my house has gotten very bad. The shower smells like a swimming pool, and it's unpleasant to drink. Anyone have experience/recommendations with whole-house water filters?

Does it smell like sulfur? We had this happen a while back and it was the hot water tank lining. If it breaks there is some harmless bacteria that can get in there. Test this by checking the hot water running and see if it smells/tastes different than the cold only running.

It would be expensive to put a whole house filter on to remove the chlorine. I have a small Reverse Osmosis system. Any tap water that will be consumed comes from the RO system. The fish is happy in it too! I got mine here: http://jimstrains.com/page...

looking into it (i had never thought about putting the whole house on filtration) i see the costs range from $700-$7,000 (basically speaking) and i bet you can get govt rebates too, so its not as costly as i first thought

My mom has a whole house filter system and loves it (definitely on the lower end of the price spectrum quoted above). It helps reduce mineralization in her various water fixtures in addition to removing that pool smell (she couldn't take a shower without her eyes watering).

Have you been getting a lot of rain where you are? Sometimes they'll increase the chlorine because of run-off. Not likely to do damage to you, but it's still foul.

In Ft Lauderdale we got a notice in our last water bill that they were going to be dumping extra chlorine in the water most of this month. I found a website that deals with this subject extensively http://safeusawater.com They don't sell anything, just provide info. I emailed them the notice I got and they put it on their site so they are pretty responsive.

Most professional writers do a lot of drafts. It's good on your first draft to leave out the editing principle in your head, and just write in a stream of consciousness way, or in other words just write what comes to your mind first without editing it. They call that the "lyrical" factor. Then after that first draft you can bring in the editing factor to clean it up. But on another note, FriendFeed is the smoothest running web app on the internet. I think you - like many - haven't seen enough writing you really like, and consciously so. Try to watch for articles/essays that really resonate with you, and look at the form, not just the message. I agree with others here that producing good writing will probably take lots of revisions, just like many coders refactor (or should I say "tweak") their code endlessly, if only the method names, order of variables, the way error/exception handling are structured, etc.

On a side note, one of my favorite FriendFeed features is the ability to "tweak" my comments after I posted them. I'm rarely satisfied with my first draft of a paragraph-length comment. Secret to good code and to good writing is having a very demanding internal critic.

Good writing is good more because of its good style rather than its underlying propositional content. Programs are the opposite. Code has a lot of style, but propositional content rules, which is easier to appreciate. Good writing has a cadence and flow that is easier to feel verbally than on paper (for me, anyway). Read what you've written out loud: if your voice gains confidence/speed as you go, totally immersed in the words (in the rhetorical style of Barack Obama), you're done. If instead you stop and restart, looping back on yourself, with the words calling attention to how they don't quite fit (in the rhetorical style of George Bush), you're not done yet. After a few tries out loud you'll find a better phrasing.

I'm tired the FriendFeed Facebook app. keeps asking me to fix "the problem" so it can post to my wall. I don't want it to post to my wall! Contacts on Facebook and FriendFeed are different types for me. On Facebook it's about being friends in real life, on FriendFeed it is about interests. At least that is how I use FF and FB. My Facebook friends would probably feel I was spamming uninteresting stuff if my FF posts where copied to FB (well, at least if I used FF so intensive as I want to:-))...

Rodfather, I don't think that will be an option for msft :). If Chrome is built the way I would do it, there is no installation per-se -- everything runs in the browser and the config in stored in the cloud (and cached locally). The computer is a pure appliance.

Flash is too established to kill off right now, so I'd be surprised if Chrome didn't include flash support. It will take many years to get rid of that thing. First they need to fix the standard browser to not be so broken (lack of video, multi-file upload, etc), then they need everyone to switch to the new html5 solutions.

You have Moonlight to run Silverlight applications in Linux. Not perfect, but then an application made on Silverlight is "not perfect" by definition

The point here is that Google has no motivation to include Silverlight on these machines, and installing software likely won't be an option (it's a web appliance), so it will be absent from a lot of netbooks, just as it is absent from iPhones. That cuts into market share, which is a bad thing for a platform that is trying to compete with more universal tech like Flash and HTML....

@DanielChow: NaCl has very little overlap with ActiveX, apart from running native code. It runs in a provably safe way, and explicitly does *not* allow it to access arbitrary host APIs. I don't know what's under the hood of Silverlight (nobody knows), but Flash is basically a sprite engine controlled by Actionscript, which is basically an adapted version of Javascript anyway. It's nicely packaged though, and has an army of developers, so it won't go away that easily, at least not until there are Flash-to-Canvas/ HTML5 porting tools/ translators and the like.

It looks like with Native Client, you should be able to write your Chrome OS app in any language you feel like. So far, they have some examples in C/C++, but one of the things they ported is a Lua interpreter. If Adobe isn't going to invest heavily in fixing the show-stopping bugs on non-Windows versions of Flash, it's inevitably going to die, and there's really nothing either Google or Apple can do even if they wanted to support Flash better.

I honestly don't know how necessary Flash is. Apple seems to be doing fine without supporting it. But certainly Gnash and Swfdec should be implementable on Chrome OS. The fact is that without Adobe's full support on a given platform, Flash apps will always be second class citizens on alternate platforms, and so far, there's no indication that Adobe is interested in fully supporting any platform other than Windows.

Pardon me, but the OP is a ridiculous conclusion. For that to be the case, Chrome OS would have to kill Windows, OS X, etc altogether. Paul, I understand your viewpoint as being an ex-Google person, but that's just NOT going to happen. Right now the video specification from HTML5 has been dropped because of an impasse, meaning that we may be transitioning from 1 closed-source boss - Flash - to another - H264. Good luck.

I wouldn't worry too much amount multimedia. By exposing WebGL, (and hopefully OpenCL), you can offload a lot of compute intensive stuff onto the GPU via GPGPU techniques, and NativeClient is there to take up the rest of the slack, but the for the vast majority of iPhone-like games, I'm willing to bet V8 Javascript on a modern processor is more than enough. I'm not opposed to non-open software, but for OS, browser, etc I prefer that it be open. Cliff, Google isn't going to "block" anything, but they can certainly choose what to include, and my guess is that they won't include SL. As Claudio points out, MSFT can make their own version of ChromeOS that includes SL, which is why open source software is nice (it can't be crippled too much or else someone will fork it).

I have heard somewhere that Fash uses it's own port where Silverlight works over the HTTP port. That's why Netflix works so well. To that, Flash costs more on a sever side because providers can charge more for that port traffic. Could it come down to who is cheaper? (I am fully prepared to be wrong).

Nick: When you say HTML 5 has "drawing", are you refering to the Canvas element? I would not consider an immediate-mode procedural raster drawing library to be much of a competitor to retained-mode declarative vector libraries like SVG or Silverlight. Programming with the Canvas tag is sort of the equivalent of programming in assembly language for bitmaps.

@Gabe: I think you've got it upside-down. A Canvas-style API is the fundamental basis on which you can build a retained mode structure like SVG, et al. If a platform includes a retained-mode library as a convenience, so be it. You can build SVG on Canvas, but not the other way around (hacks like IECanvas notwithstanding -- they have horrible performance characteristics and are a nasty abstraction inversion).

@Gabe - I agree, and people are implementing those libraries now. See http://raphaeljs.com/ for example. Also, don't underestimate the convenience factor. I don't own any Flash development tools, but my text editor works pretty well for Canvas+JS based stuff.

Nick: Didn't the author of raphael have some massive rant about how bad the Canvas element is? And I don't have any Flash dev tools either, but I use a text editor for most of my Silverlight development. It is incredibly convenient to be able to type something like <DataGrid ItemsSource="{Binding tabledata}"/> into a text editor and not have to create the data grid myself.

Dan Douglass: Flash is necessary because so many web sites rely on it. How many people would want to get a netbook that couldn't play FaceBook games or watch YouTube videos? Of course Google is in the unique position of being able to make YouTube work on ChromeOS without Flash, but they probably can't do anything about Hulu, Vimeo, or any of the other video sites out there that require Flash.

For me, visual *BAM* implies "everything visual." Face shape, eyes, smile, hair, skin... but mostly intensity/poise. Then reactivity. Major negative points for ennui or waifishness. Then there's aural *BAM*. Expression, accent, eye-opening brilliance, complete command of language. The aural *BAM* is much more intense for me and can actually leave me stunned and speechless for several minutes. Can be embarrassing. Worse, while eyes can be averted, ears can't. Design flaw.

The best I've found so far is 50ms for "time host smugmug.com usw6.akam.net". Does everyone just run their primary dns servers at 100% CPU or something?

It has nothing to do with the endpoints - Google answers requests very quickly. One issue is that many caching nameservers do run at crazy high CPU because the ISP doesn't care if it's not an uptime issue. Also Internet UDP is truly unreliable (high drop rate) and retries are delayed by a long timeout. TCP requires connection setup. :-(
