A good use for Wave would be for the TWiT shows. You can pause the live stream and it will buffer from where you left off but the Friendfeed room moves on so you are behind the chat and have no idea what is being talked about. Could make a wave client for TWiT shows so you can "playback" what you missed in synch with the video stream.

Finally getting a chance to listen to this... Just to clarify, Wave is not really extension to XMPP per se. The federation protocol between Wave servers is XMPP based, but the client-server communication (in this case the communication between your browser and the Wave server) isn't using XMPP. I believe that at the moment it's a proprietary format for exchanging JSON. There's some discussion both on Wave and in Google Groups about standardization, but it's distinct from server-server federation right now.

Dan Shafer, who ran CNET's Builder.com Live (the conference you spoke at that got me into blogging) handed out clickers so that if a speaker started going too commercial you'd click it. The speaker got the point pretty quickly. Mark: the 140conf reminds me of Dave's earlier bloggercons. Except Dave had magic: he got the audience involved. Of course we all can talk back with our new tools in real time (I'm sitting in front row).

I plan to talk to Robert and Rob about Skyping into the Fastttrac programs Stealthmode offers in the fall and "guest" speaking about the 2010 web, after which the small business people we deal with would be more motivated to go to a web site than if I just sent them there. So, it has been established, both "."s and "-"s (dots and dashes?) are ignored at Facebook. At Gmail, ".", dots are ignored, "-", dashes are not. At both FB and Gmail, g.a.r.y.e.t.i.e = garyetie = gary.etie. but ≠ g-a-r-y-e-t-i-e, or gary-etie, for Gmail.

It would be getting harder to register firstname.lastname by now (Unless you have a more unique name). After the main one is taken you get reverse name taken lastname.firstname then they start spilling out to using initials which multiplies the amount of people that could also use it. All variations seem to be taken for my name now.

In 20 minutes or so everyone in here will be gone and if you missed the interaction, then adding another comment doesn't seem to have much value because who is going to see it (unless you come back in and look at this thread). Whereas with Twitter, commenting later is ok, is just as visible, and is still relevant. Am I off base?

Ok, this has been very helpful in learning some of the values of Friendfeed. Definitely has some things Twitter doesn't. But I think the main thing I have learned is that I don't have time for FriendFeed. :) I can keep up with friends much quicker on Twitter - not as rich of information, but that doesn't matter because on Twitter they are (ideally) being more selective in what they post...

The only way I could make sense of FF was when I found imaginary friends. By creating new feeds from RSS or other sources it makes FF much more powerful. Can't link to facebook friends though....I think it's a privacy thing correct?

Nevermind '3.0' or '2.0'. The real incongruity here is the term web. The future isn't all about the world wide web - visiting specific sites using a graphic browser - its much broader, about the internet in general and how that is wending it's way into our lives in general, through a variety of devices. But yes, most people just see it all as the internet anyway.

not directly the 2010 web persay, but I think what companies such as Barco are doing at the very highest levels of display technology (their LED screens were used, some 2000 sq. meters of in fact, for the amazing Eurovision set in Moscow) will have a huge impact in years to come on what we all use for our displays. If display resolutions finally start to really rise (on average) that will impact the web considerably

In response to your 'method' Robert. I agree, the first wave of people will decide the story of a community - providing they have ownership of it. But building43 is a top-down model, what's to say that the people you invite will want to buy into the ethos of your community? Doesn't community begin with collective impetus, collective need?

Robert: While not being sure exactly where you're going with this, it might make sense to include at least a few (call it a control group) of stodgy old CIOs and/or a person or two from the likes of MSFT, ORCL or others that you would say don't "get" the 2010web (full disclosure I work for MS). Without this I think you risk having some serious groupthink even with the luminaries on your list. Maybe this is planned for later in your efforts but I can't help but think it would be a benefit from the get go.

I've been working on how to automate the routing of data streams (such as Twitter/FF updates) so that the network as a whole will begin doing the work of selecting our content for us, eliminating most of the need for manual following/unfollowing. I'd add @bitsweat aka Jeremy Kemper, who worked really hard to merge mirb and Rails into a new version of Rails. It took diplomacy to mold two rival coding teams into one, and as well genius level coding skills. It's hard to find someone on your list, Robert, who is both a diplomat and a great coder.

I guess it all boils down to the point that most initiatives are not willing to work on the plumbing of the web. Everyone wants to build the house and contain people within it. The irony of course is that if you build the plumbing smart you would be part of everything, instead of "owning" a small piece of the web trying to lock users in (And I thought my posts were long ;-) )
