Facebook Recruits Street Troops To Grow in Germany
September 26 at 2:28 pm - via Reshare - Link
""Facebook may be the world’s largest and fastest growing social network, but apparently Germany remains a tough market to crack for the company. The site is just ranked 19th on Alexa’s Top 100 list for this country, ten positions behind StudiVZ, its local clone. While Facebook currently has a German user base of 800,000 (according to the site’s ad placement tool), StudiVZ boasts a membership of over 10 million, making it the largest social network in the German-speaking world. Facebook has been available in German since March of this year and reportedly grew by just 200,000 members since then. Comscore numbers suggest that number might be higher (see below)." - Nicole Simon
@Erhan - SchuelerVZ is part of the StudiVZ network and part of the 10 million members. StudiVZ itself is actually declining since the beginning of 2008, they're only growing because of the insane growth of SchuelerVZ. - sebmos

Yeah, so far it trips me out too. - Steve Isaacs
I actually quite like it... - Daniel Bruce
I don't, it's not what I expect from links (I expect them from being visible as links) and makes it appear as if the page suddenly has less features. There are enough studies that show that it's important that links are underlined. - sebmos
I added this userstyle to Mozilla Prism to turn those links blue at least: .l_person, .name a { color: #0000cc !important ; } - Morton Fox
Are there any instances of bold black text not containing links? I'm with you that it is weird (much like the choice of very light gray for comments), but I don't think it's an inconsistency. - Andrew Burd
Yes, there are. "Room Admins" and "Room Members (#)" are bold black text that are not links. - Morton Fox
On the othjer hand, the page isin't crammed full of links. I think it helps clear up the theme and keep the focus on content ( which is the whole point of the site, by the way). I like it like this. - Roberto "Maverick" Bonini
I think it's a smart way of reducing visual overload. It only takes a small amount of effort to get used to, and then you know there's a rich trove of more information available within a click without the page having to be weighed down with underlined blue all over the place. - Earle Martin

- Ryo
Der Begriff "russische Friedenstruppen" gehört immer in Anführungszeichen! - Thomas Hoppe
- Thomas Hoppe

“Shudder to think: What if Edwards had won the nomination instead of Obama.”
August 8 at 10:11 pm - Link
Would it have mattered? Seriously, would this cause you to vote for McCain instead? - Brent Logan
"Shudder" doesn't cover it. Yikes! - Joanmarie
Brent it would not cause me to, but it might cause quite a few "undecideds" to decide. And if the election were pretty close.... - Joanmarie
Brent, I think something like this would have the potential to disrupt a campaign in a big way. Wouldn't matter to many people, but those on the fence, it certainly would. - John Walker
Well I hope I have the opportunity to vote for Elizabeth Edwards for president in 2016. - Adam Mordecai
I always wonder about those on the fence. Even with McCain being a "maverick," the differences between him and either Obama or Edwards is immense. What are those on the fence waiting for? And then I wonder if those on the fence aren't smarter than I am, that maybe someone's claimed policy isn't worth that much if he has no integrity. Doesn't it make more sense to vote for character? And I'm stuck looking for integrity in this race? - Brent Logan
It wouldn't have stopped me for voting for him, but it certainly would have destroyed his campaign and he would not have been elected. Such is the nation in which we live. What bothers me, I suppose, about Edwards, is what bothers me about many politicians. Their arrogance causes them to believe that they will never be caught for the things they do. You simply cannot hide your skeletons when you run for President (unless you get your father or his appointees to seal records and hide them for you). - Dennis Metzcher
Brent, no of course I would have voted for the Democrat. But he would have lost anyway, not that he would have gotten the nomination, he would have withdrawn in disgrace once it came out as it was sure to. I'm surprised he didn't understand that. He couldn't have been President, all he could have done was destroy the Democratic Party. - Dave "Maverick" Winer
And it's not about the people on the fence -- it's about the press. They have the power to delete a candidate. Look what they did to Dean. - Dave "Maverick" Winer
If Edwards had won the nomination, he wouldn't have had enough free time to go back to the hotel and get caught ;-) - Kirk Kittell
Edwards made a big mistake by running. He had a shot at a cabinet position in the new administration, although his confirmation hearing was a hurdle he would have had trouble with. He should have kept his dick in his pants. What an idiot. Unbelievably stupid, self-destructive. - Dave "Maverick" Winer
Now everyone should have a good idea why HRC can't be the Democratic nominee for VP. The skeletons in her closet are much worse, and they aren't in the closet. Obama didn't call her on it, and the press gave her a pass in the primary. It wouldn't happen in the fall, she'd be held to account for them, there was outright bribery in the last days of the Clinton Administration, and she was part of it. Not a bystander. - Dave "Maverick" Winer
@Dave Winer (davew): You're right, it would have basically given the nomination to the Republicans. Whether right or wrong, something like this can be a deal-breaker for many people. The Rupublicans' attacks would have probably tied to him to Bill Clinton and all that good stuff. - Thomas B via NoiseRiver
Well, whatever way you look at it, the candidate has the power to delete the candidate. They all know, or should know, the the forum they're competing in. - John Walker
@Brent Logan: Probably not, but the media frenzy alone would have destroyed his candidacy. - Pete Brown
only in america .. prissy folks - Gregory Lent
I don't get the claim that the differences between Obama and McCain are "immense." Ever looked at the spread of various European political parties? McCain and Obama aren't all that different from each other, but in America their differences are viewed as some huge political chasm. It's weird. - David Worrell
immoral? yes, but it doesn't necessarily make him a bad leader. - Bob Blunk
people in other nations never understand how Americans view taxes. McCain and Obama have very different tax policies and thus are immensely different candidates. - Andrew Burd
Would you refuse to buy a product from a company because the CEO screws around? Would you know anyway? - Ian May
Andrew, that's crap - no one likes taxes. Ian: Many people in America probably would do just that, if corporations made a habit of running advertising campaigns the way politicians run political campaigns. - David Worrell
@David Worrell - I only need to look at the US to see why I happily pay higher taxes. - sebmos
He would have moved to the center to capture swing votes like Obama and diluted his base. - Andy Wibbels
jeez, if having affairs impaired the ability to do your job, the world would be in the tank - Gregory Lent
I am never happy about paying taxes, particularly as much of it is wasted in bureaucratic inefficiency. Governments never do anything as cost-effectively as private enterprise . - Ian May
It wouldn't matter for democrats. Look at Obama. He could slaughter a lamb on stage and people would cheer him. - Spencer Scott
Dave's right on this one. Edwards had a clear shot at a cabinet position. His arrogance in thinking that he could hide the affair shows poor judgement and would have been great fodder for the Republican candidate. - Jim McCusker

Louis Gray, defender of social media and...tabloids! We need to get you a cape! - Robert Seidman
Actually, Alexander Williams called this when the story first came out, and said something to the effect of "Enquirer is often more careful than other media outlets because they got sued so often in the past." - Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
@Mark, that's correct. In one of my journalism courses at Berkeley, we saw a piece on the Enquirer which discussed how careful they are to get stories sourced and correct. It was eye-opening. - Louis Gray
The Enquirer isn't as wrong as people often think they are. And I'm still not buying that the baby isn't his. Why risk everything to go to the hotel room? I have NEVER liked him. - Cyndy

Opinion poll: Which is worse, an extramarital affair or seeing a call girl? I'm trying to decide where Edwards lands in relation to Spitzer. - Kevin Fox
Well one is breaking the law and the other is being a douche bag. 1is sort of in direct conflict of being a government official and the other really isn't, it just shows a lack of integrity. Which isn't really a conflict with the position it is more of a prerequisite to being a politician. - Geoff Schultz
Spitzer is worse because he actively railed against the horrible sins of prostitution. I don't know how outspoken John Edwards has been about extra-marital affairs... - Emotion Tad
Wow. Excerpt from his statement: "In the course of several campaigns, I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic. If you want to beat me up -- feel free. You cannot beat me up more than I have already beaten up myself." I hope McCain doesn't use this as fodder, ala 'See how the newfound attention might be making Obama egocentric and narcissistic? McCain became gradually famous over decades so he's immune.' - Kevin Fox
Good point Tad. :-) Taking the specific individuals out the picture, I think the extramarital affair is definitely worse. That is, among other things, a huge violation of trust and of a commitment you should stand by. - Joanmarie
holy shit... I didn't want to think the National Enquirer got it right? another Democrat with moral problems. go figure. - AnotherⓃⓄⒶⒽ
Spitzer is worse for his self-righteous approach to everything. Plus he committed an federal offense by paying for sex across state lines (idiot). anything I say about a Democrat will turn out to be true if I wait long enough. prediction: Obama has sex with Elton John! - AnotherⓃⓄⒶⒽ
I'm still picking Edwards FTW in "more abhorrent." Dying wife + still lying about illegitimate child PLUS paying off married campaign worker to claim baby was his, even though HE was married with little kids trumps the hooker thing, self-righteous or no. - Cyndy
At first I thought, "Oh, that would be silly for Reuters to credit the Enquirer." But in the past (and maybe even today), TV news would not go forward with a story until after the New York Times or Washington Post had blessed it. - Ontario Emperor
Didn't Newt Gingrich leave his dying wife at the hospital to carry on an affair? - Emotion Tad
True, Tad, but I never voted for Gingrich. I voted for both Spitzer and (well, really had no choice), Kerry/Edwards. - Cyndy
Spitzer was worse, not because he broke the law (the law is stupid), but because publicly, he railed against prostitution. As for a politician in general, I don't think it matters. Lots of people have affairs, they can still be competent. Lots of people don't have affairs and they're incompetent. A politician marriage really hasn't much to do with their ability to do their job. - sebmos

He is an opportunistic sob but that's what being an American is all about. - Geoff Schultz
Gore is putting his chips down where he benefits. this is like inside trading. Drive the price of oil up with Green rhetoric and make Americans pay the bill. I'm sorry... but this will not do. Yeah, I hate those relevant ads :). I don't understand why someone would want to opt-out of contextual ads. Maybe they it's just something that sounds nice if you don't think about it. - Paul Buchheit
Yes, that's a big choice between watching relevant ads and preserving privacy. What I find the most interesting is that only a tiny persantage of those who see those ads are aware of any privacy issues or opt-out capability. - Svetlana Gladkova via twhirl
@Paul It's a two-sided sword. Companies like Google (but also social networks, etc.) often know more about us than intelligence services. That's no problem, as long as this isn't abused. The problem is that there are so many parties involved that could abuse this information. Another Bush-like gov't and Google could be forced to work together with intelligence services. The step to have this information abused isn't far. You only need one person out of that many people that potentially have access to [...] - sebmos
[...] to that data, who sells the information, or something. It doesn't really matter if this is *unlikely* - it is possible, and that is a concern that has to be respected. The other point of view is true of course, too - relevant ads are better than irrelevant ads and can actually be useful information. - sebmos
Oh please, Svetlana! My credit card company sells info based on my purchases to anyone who will buy! Here in the US, if you give to the Democratic National Committee they will sell your info to the Republican National Committee and vice-versa. Wherever there is money to be made on your data, it is being made. Yahoo contextual ads hardly scratches the surface when it comes to utilizing "private" information. - Robert Seidman
@Robert: I'm not sure about how exactly privacy is handled in the US but I actually hoped that better than here in Rusia. But one thing I'm sure of is that Yahoo's invasion is very minor compared to what can be experienced elsewhere. - Svetlana Gladkova via twhirl
Someone told me about a test email, which was sent to two large groups. One email had opt-in checked, the other had decline checked. 95% of both groups accepted whatever choice was pre-selected. Sounds like people won't opt-out, even if offered the choice. - Paul Rodriguez
I'll definitely opt out when given the choice. Contextual ads are preferable to non, but I don't care for any form of advertising. Same with do not call lists, junk mail. - Jason Kaneshiro

@Wictor & Dileepa You have to use an application launcher for a few days to understand its usefulness. I use Launchy for some time now and I miss it on computers that haven't got it installed. Yes, it doesn't do much more than a search box in a start menu. It's still more useful. Having said that, I didn't try the Microsoft product. It looks like a app launcher with more UI, something that kind of contradicts the idea of an app launcher in the first place, but one never knows. ;) - sebmos
been meaning to try Launchy for some time now. Does anyone out there use Find & Run Robot from DonationCoder.com? - Nathan Rein
sebmos: Have used Launchy on XP and yes, it is very useful. - Dileepa Prabhakar via twhirl
i started using launchy when i switched from vista to xp and loved it. recently i switched back to vista and tried to use the search box in the start menu but it's just not the same. you get so used to hitting alt-space and quickly type something that it becomes ingrained. on top of that, launchy "learns" what apps your wanting based on what you type. vista never figures out that when i type photoshop i'm wanting photoshop, not photoshop lightroom just because that's first in the list. so, i'm reinstalling launchy on my system today. - Jason Shultz via twhirl
Yeah the search box inteh start menu is slow when you search. It could be alot better at just searching for programs. - Roberto "Maverick" Bonini
I'm using Launchy. I wonder how this compares. - Morton Fox
Jason, actually Vista does learn. It moves the most-used result of a query to the top of the list. I used to use Launchy back in my XP days but haven't needed it since Vista came around. - Akiva Moskovitz
@Akiva. I wonder why it wasn't working for me? If I typed photoshop, "photoshop lightroom" kept coming up first even thought I wanted regular photoshop. of course, if i typed lightroom, it came up first which is what I wanted. - Jason Shultz via twhirl

The fact that MS has to warn users about making their sites IE compatible says a lot about IE. I look forward to the day when a forthcoming IE release will be no big deal, because devs will be able to write standards complaint web pages that just work in IE. - Paul Grav
@Paul Applause! - ※Fu※
@Paul You're wrong. This day won't come as long as the old releases are there and as long as no browser is 100% standards compatible. Folks will have to optimize for IE8, because they optimized for IE in general. From my tests with the first beta of IE8, I could remove all the IE7- and IE6-extras, because actually it was as standards compatible as Firefox. You will always have to optimize CSS and HTML for browsers, simply because they interpret standards differently. - sebmos
I have stylesheets for different versions of Firefox, and I could have a separate stylesheet for different versions of Opera, if it luckily hadn't only .1% market share among the visitors of our site. - sebmos
@Sebmos. Wrong about what? I didn't state any facts. There's nothing that you wrote that would contradict what I wrote. - Paul Grav
@sebmos: I have used older versions of Firefox (0.10, Firebird, Phoniex) lately and have noticed no problems rendering webpages. Only web apps. And I very rarely have problems with rendering pages in Konqueror who very few people actually optimize for. The only different with Konqueror is that I have to occasionally falsely identify my user agent. - Jake (aka Jawee)
The one thing that I hate about web development is the amount of time spent getting CSS to display correctly across IE and Firefox. Ie8 looks promising, no doubt. - Roberto "Maverick" Bonini
Not going to be happy if I need to make another set of CSS hacks for IE8, as well as IE7/IE6 just so MS can persist in a non-standards compatible platform. I know that's not what the article says, but we've been disappointed before. Get it right MS. - Mo "Killer Bee" Kargas
@Jake Certainly depends on the complexity of a design. I try to design less complex so that differences in appearance don't matter and optimize for the latest versions of (relevant) browsers (FF3, IE7). I'm happy if the site looks good in other browsers. (<FF3, Opera). I don't care about IE6, though - I do what I can so that the site *works* there. - sebmos
@Sebemos No need to be so patronising. I wasn't being serious. I thought that "web pages that just work in IE" might have given that away. I was wrong about that. - Paul Grav

- sebmos
@Timo: Was für ein lahmer Troll-Versuch. - marcel weiss
- Timo Heuer

“How many people do NOT have any tattoos?”
August 8 at 5:06 am - Link
It seems that the minority now is someone with zero. - Trish R
I have seen one. - ivanandersson via Alert Thingy
I don't have any. - Michelle Martinez
Don't have any. Heck, haven't *seen* anyone with one. - Yuvi
I do not have any tattoos. My girlfriend has enough for both of us. They're sexier on her anyway. - James Williams (willia4)
No tattoos here. - sebmos
I don't have any, neither think of having it in future. Funny enough, in USSR times it was criminals-only "privilege" :) - silpol
i know someone who does not have a tattoo. - Baard Overgaard Hansen
I have zero - I have a zero tolerance for pain.... - Paula Hawk
None here. - Parth Awasthi
I always think to myself: "Would I be happy with a tattoo I would have gotten 10 years ago, now?" Which makes me fairly sure I wouldn't be happy in another 10 years with anything I'd get today which keeps me tattoo free. - Brooks Bishop
Nope, tattoos are not for me. It's been suggested I get one to harden my image, but meh. Knowing my luck I'd get one of those misspelled ones that gets infamy on failblog. - Jared Smith
I told myself I wouldn't get one until after I was married. Weird reason, but after I was married I had no longer had the desire. - Heather
I don't have any. I've considered it, but I also have to consider how it's going to look on my body after 20 years...ugh! - Mavericks of Troy, NV!
@Heather: I'm kinda the same way. Told myself I would wait until I was 25. When I hit 25, I lost all interest. I know a lot of people with tatoos, but I'm just not interested in joining the ranks. - Robert Fischer
I do not have any tattoos. I thought about getting one once, but I couldn't think of anything that I'd still find cool in 10 days, let alone 10 years. - James Ferguson
none for me... but I like taking pictures of them. - Thomas Hawk
0 tattoos - Pavlo Zahozhenko
0. Never felt the urge and they are permanent. My tastes, opinions, likes and dislikes have never stopped changing. A tattoo that might look great one day my seem horrible the next. - Paul Grav
nope, none - Bryan Clark
Zero. - Raoul Pop
I like them on other people (most of the time) but I like my skin the way it is. A tattoo is waaayyyy too permanent. - Corie "Viper" Jones
Nada - Peter Dawson
I don't have any. - Yolanda
I always thought people with tatoo were idiots mainly b/c of the reason stated here many times: how can you possibly think of something that you want on your body FOREVER. Then I had two little girls, and then I understood. I got their names on me. - cjmart
none for me - Kortney Jarman via Alert Thingy
Not me, nor piercings, nor other body mods - steplow is Steve
i have none, but i know man who have and some of them have a lot.. - Hayk Hakobyan
I have none. - Aaron B. Hockley
No tattoos or piercings. Interesting scars from playing football, though. - ha3rvey
No body art here. I am considering a tattoo to raise my street cred though. - Russellreno
I am aware of tattoos. - Shey
What's a tattoo? Isn't that a Russian girlsband? - Fernando
No tattoos, just old scars from bike accidents in Bangalore, India! Some of my friends here have been getting some nice ones- it's much cheaper to get them done in India than in the West- and some of the workmanship is just awesome! - Siddharth Deb
None here. - Duncan Riley
None, And don't want any... - George The Writer
Interesting thing about tattoos is how addictive the experience can be. I came out of my experience with such a rush that my thoughts were "again, again, again!" I'm out of ideas for things that I want permanently on my body. - cjmart

Mozilla Labs » Introducing Snowl: An Experiment with Messaging in the Browser
August 7 at 8:42 am - via Mento - Link
I'm all for experimentation, but this seems kind of like a waste. It's applying the mail interface to web content, and that, ultimately seems inefficient and outmoded. In other words, it's taking content that's inherently social and stripping it of its social context. I'll wait for further development. - Chris Messina via Mento
In it's current way, it's useless, but the UI could be improved. Also, it could be the basis for something different, namely a mail client inside the browser, based on Thunderbird's code - something I think would be interesting. Gmail is nice, but Thunderbird is fast. - sebmos
