Great movie. Bill Murray is great in this, but don't forget to keep your eye on Willem Defoe.
- RyanEs
Great movie. Hilarious and serious.
- Bill Romanos
I watched the movie months ago, hated it, couldn't even get all the way through. Funny thing is I usually like Wes Anderson movies, but not this one.
- Dave Winer
I'm with Dave on this one. I've seen it twice and didn't like it both times.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Love this movie. Just the helmet music is enough to make my day. Didn't like it the first time I saw it, mainly because of the superfluous CGI acquatic creatures and Kate Blanchett's ridiculous voice. But it really grew on me upon repeat viewing. Still hate the CGI creatures.
- Dan MacTough
Sad. Reminds of asian women roles. Either they are prostitutes or 'weak'.
- Rodfather
Mo: In the U.S., "Arab" is (commonly) used in derogatory contexts and the connotation rings negativity...
- Mona Nomura
Really? I didn't think there's anything wrong with 'Arab'.
- Rodfather
Mona, this is exactly the message of the video. Hollywood (US media) has changed the meaning of Arab. It's now negative like an insult. Same with Muslim and Islam. Same with the Arab culture (food, dress, tradition).
- Mohamed J
Mo: Definitely. I love the Arabian culture (food especially!!) and I've tried to educate myself as much as possible. Unfortunately, the reality is, most people do no look beyond what is presented to us via Mass Media, and pass judgements... I understand what the video is saying, however depending on the viewer, it may be perceived as mocking of sorts... @Rodfather: Abroad, "Arab" is the 'norm' per se, since the word is not painted in a negative fashion...
- Mona Nomura
Mona, the way I understand it, arab is a racial term, and is used negatively in the media.
- Mo Kargas
They do that to (almost) every one at some point...
- J. Abdul-Qahhar
I've always thought of Arab as another ethnic group. Like Persians, Latinos, etc..
- Rodfather
I see it asjust a name for humans from a particular region of the earth (arabian penninsula)... I don't believe in race since it's just another term that was constructed in order to stop us from calling each other human. The old divide and conquer routine.
- alphaxion
I removed Tumblr from my FF. Haven't really used it, just for testing while writing this PHP script. http://detect.tumblr.com/
- Hao Chen
what are the seo impacts? do comments follow? the CSS?
- Christian Anderson
Bjorn, where did you get your Tumblr template?
- Hao Chen
Hao~ Thanks, but why on earth would you want to leave Tumblr for wordpress?
- Bjorn Stromberg
Christian: Right now, it just exports the posts and its tags. Not sure how comments work on Tumblr. Is it Disqus? No CSS unless it's inline style.
- Hao Chen
thanks again Hao for doing this. The video didn't surive the import though (but it did yesterday, with the alpha version you showed me!). some pics are also still missing but the tags have all been properly imported.
- Gaby K. Slezák
Bjorn: my reason for "leaving" tumblr is that I'd rather have one place where I blog and share everything, comments without Disqus, and where the archive/search doesn't suck, which WP has just made as easy like Tumblr is with the new "Presse this" bookmarklet
- Gaby K. Slezák
Gaby, nice catch. Fixed the video bug. That might have also fixed the image bug . :)
- Hao Chen
Sounds like some sort of medical procedure. Ok, let's have a look
- Mo Kargas
Mona, you are so excited about it, I just have to check it out.
- Svetlana Gladkova
from twhirl
Svetlana, it's AWESOME. The threaded convos are neat and they push up, when updated. There's also an 'unread' tab to ensure you don't miss anything. AND videos are embeddable. It's SO opposite a Twitter clone!
- Mona Nomura
Looks cool. Same username as here for me
- Kevin L
That really gets on my nerves too. I saw that a lot in Mississippi - signs would say things like: Smith Family "Reunion." And I'd wonder what does that mean? It's just kinda sorta like a reunion? Or one like: Lambda Alpha Sorority "Inc" - what the heck are those quotes for? What is an incorporated sorority anyways?
- Internet's Tad
No passive aggressive notes room on FF yet? C'mon people!
- Pete Delucchi
My favorite passive aggressive sign at work: "Please do not leave dirty dishes in the sink, especially dishes from the Cafe which are not supposed to leave the Cafe anyway."
- Michael Hocter
Thats older than a the oldest Twinkie, but just as good. ;P
- Andrew Baron
I was taught when you ever see quotation marks in the middle of a sentence like that, you can replace the marks by just saying "so-called" instead. So: Please so-called do not use staples for posting.
- Pete Delucchi
I want to give this person a metal. (Please note: That was a "joke.")
- Bill Barol
although I am definitely "not" ^^ passive aggressive, I have to admit that I once wrote notes like this when I was living in a commune. But I "never" used quotation marks like "this". "Very" funny ;-) http://www.passiveaggressivenotes.com/ rocks.
- ※Fu※
Not to mentions "these" are not quotation marks even. “These” are real quotation marks.
- Tsega Dinka
omg I totally say "quote foo" all the time to emphasize - or more often make light of - a topic of discussion as in "that's a great quote strategy." a lot of the time I even do the air quotes thing with my hands, sometimes instead of saying "quote." :\
- Jon Price
@Jon .. and yer still alive .. amazing :)
- Steven Hodson
i love the penciled in arrows pointing to the quotes just in case you didn't "get it"
- Morgan
@jon but do you say "quote blah blah blah unquote" or "quote unquote blah blah blah"??
- Morgan
@Morgan, right?! Also, some highlighter action would be great!
- Anna Haro
@Anna highlighter is a must here! someone clearly dropped the ball... :)
- Morgan
@Mike - The “Blog” of “Unnecessary” Quotation Marks is one of my favorite websites!
- Corie
a word-nerdy friend of mine has that on his bumper.
- Madsimian
man, we need so many signs like this at my job for a variety of other errors (e.g. "anniversary's" instead of anniversaries. I even put a post-it with "ies" over the "y's" and they still didn't change it). it drives me *nuts*. I work with such slow people.
- Kamilah Gill
Hey Yuvi, what feed did you use for those? I tried my FF feed a while back but it puts my name, post, and a few other words that are more related to the feed itself than the content were the biggest. I'd like to make one to maybe put on Moo cards. Thanks!!
- Her Lindsay-ness
I love how in Mona's there are two instances of bacon, one capitalized and one not. :)
- Her Lindsay-ness
I love wordle! Just realized that you can right-click a word to remove it from the cloud.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Linday: I wonder if taht's the reason there are more laughing than bacon instances ;) <3
- Mona Nomura
Calling Lindsay calling Lindsay - http://wordle.net/gallery... I have a tool called PinkGray that generates the text reqd ;)
- Yuvi
@Yuvi - THANKS MUCH!! Could you send me the word list in a file so I can play with it in Wordle (lindsay[at]donaghe[dot]com) ? That's awesome! I have a color scheme I use to customize them some more in Photoshop. I'll owe you a favor sometime!
- Her Lindsay-ness
I am shocked and surprised that my name is not mentioned by Mona, my supposed #1 fan, in this thing. I'm just going to assume the word 'cute' (in pink no less) is what covers her mentioning me.
- Akiva Moskovitz
@Yuvi - I found this tool and thought it might be useful to you too. Tim is using it to share the output of his pipes/script with people to modify their Wordles: http://www.textsnip.com/
- Her Lindsay-ness
@Lindsay - "Please keep it under 70,000 chars" -> Ouch.
- Yuvi
Great article. Love to see what other Productivity geeks use to be more efficient. This needs to be updated quarterly, given how fast tools are updated.
- Jericho
lifehacker is great - this is a good one but it is interesting that tamar is the only one that mentioned ff & the icon was so small on the graphic
- mike "glemak" dunn
Robert: Have you done such a post in the recent past?? Would like to know what software and hardware you use!
- Imran Hussain
from feedalizr
@Dtrizzle they're probably all using google docs or zoho. . .
- Jason Shultz
from twhirl
Imran: I haven't done such a post yet. I should. I will have to keep notes about everything I really use vs. use once in a while.
- Robert Scoble
I wouldn't be surprised if Obama's post-nominee shift is responsible for the loss of his lead. Before the nomination, he stood by his principles. After, he started pandering and became just another politician.
- stretta
from twhirl
After vowing to eschew private fundraising and take public financing, he has now refused public money. Once he threatened to filibuster a bill to protect telephone companies from liability for their cooperation with national security wiretaps; now he has voted for the legislation. Turning his back on a lifetime of support for gun control, he now recognizes a Second Amendment right to...

After specifically saying in the primaries that he disagreed with Sen. Hillary Clinton’s proposal to impose Social Security taxes on income over $200,000 and wanted to tax all income, he has now adopted the Clinton position. Obama’s shifts have nothing to do with altered circumstances, just a change in the political calendar. is this the so called "Change" we were promised?
- Noah David Simon
OOPS! I'm going to go have to hide that soiree I'm planning with the husband out of town Saturday night! :O
- Helen Sventitsky
cute! But don't worry, your calendar isn't revealed, only email addresses ;)
- Mona Nomura
1) so, is it safe, or no? 2) what's with all the righteous indignation over the grammar in the blog's comments? Is that normal?
- Pete Delucchi
1) calendar info is safe but people can pull up names when they invite people to 'share' calendars. i'm not too concerned but people can access your full names.. so one option would be until the bug is fixed, to change your name in the account settings (with teh premise you're not utilizing gmail for business) and 2) yes. there are TONS of grammar nazis in the world LOL
- Mona Nomura
And it is still not patched I guess. oh well, i am doing an inservice on our Google Apps for Education tomorrow.
- James O'Hagan
Have enjoyed an excellent experience w/Adhost. Seattle based. Good live support.
- Dave Martin
You will find someone who will glow and people who will trash nearly every hosting company. I have yet to find one I am thrilled with
- Douglas E. Welch
from twhirl
Can't beat Slicehost assuming you know (or want to learn) how to setup your own server. They have excellent articles to help you out to.
- Benjamin Golub
from fftogo
MediaTemple for easy point and click hosting and Slicehost if you know what you're doing or want to learn about setting up and managing a server. I've had no problems whatsoever with either.
- Brandon Titus
I've been using Dreamhost for a few years now and have never ever had a problem.
- Chris
Been happy with Aspnix - asp and php all in one plan - agree with Douglas though, there will be both sides no matter what you choose
- Virtual Bird's Eye
from twhirl
I've been using Siteground and have been very pleased!
- Mary-Lynn
Used to love Dreamhost. Then I was one of 3k users that got hacked + they are immature in their customer outreach. Moved to MediaTemple - I figure if they can handle Starbucks website they can handle me.
- Andy Wibbels
Squidhost FTW! I've had some bad experiences with a couple of the ones listed above... due to various contractual reasons, I can't say which one it is.
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
Are you looking for shared hosting? Is if stay away from Dreamhost. PairNic is worth every penny. MediaTemple is a close second.
- Paulo Elias
from twhirl
Shey-I've been pretty pleased with Dreamhost adfter 2 years. None perfect so just gotta try and hope for decent. I mean even Amazon went down once
- Mark Forman
Textdrive/Joyent. However, I got in when they were cheap. Their hosting plans are pricey now.
- Morton Fox
Dreamhost. Transparent, friendly, and stable. Never had a problem, either.
- flammable
I would have to say Surpass Hosting http://surpasshosting.com I've had a couple enterprise level dedicated servers with them as well as their shared and reseller hosting accounts. The support has always been great and they have an active community @ http://surmunity.com
- Brandon
I'd avoid dreamhost, they once took it upon themselves to robots.txt block search engine spiders on my sites because "I was using too many resources". They massively oversell shared hosting. It's ok for small sites, but anything resembling good traffic and they ride the fail whale
- Duncan Riley
Understanding that almost ALL shared hosting has problems now and then, I can't really recommend one, but I would say to avoid some of the bigger names (GoDaddy, Dreamhost, iPower). You get what you pay for in cheap mass hosting, really.
- Bryce Moore
from twhirl
i am an idiot.. Pair.com not PairNic for hosting. d'oh!
- Paulo Elias
from twhirl
Contegix, Contegix, Contegix. Honestly, just try it. They are so amazing it's not even funny. They are a managed hosting company, so you will pay more for their services, but they literally can replace most of your IT functions in your company. It's crazy how good and responsive they are. They also do a lot of great stuff for open source (hosting opensymphony.com, openqa.org, springframework.org, various Apache projects, etc). They are good people.
- Patrick Lightbody
Godaddy.com cheap. Arizona Hosting Provider!!
- Alex Sauceda
If you are looking for Windows hosting and you need a SQL Server database and are considering GoDaddy, be aware that they do not let you connect to your db with Enterprise Manager so your only choice if you ever want to make a backup or change hosts is to pay more than $100 to have the make a backup for you. Otherwise the hosting there is ok. If you need Windows hosting with good SQL Server access look at CrystalTech.com.
- Her Lindsay-ness
Whatever you do, don't go with AITcom.net. Their service really sucks! I've had nothing but problems with their Windows server with Front Page extensions. I have had decent service with a Linux server from them though. They do have 24/7 support, but if they are having a global issue, good luck getting through to tech support.
- Jeff P. Henderson
Bluehost is fairly good shared hosting. They're cheap and beginner-oriented, but advanced users on a budget can quickly get used to the Bluehost way of life.
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
"Their conclusion: fancy people with lots of training can tell cheap wine from expensive wine, but regular people cannot. What lesson should we take from this? No matter what, do not let yourself become a wine expert who can tell the difference between cheap and expensive wines. When it comes to your pocketbook and wine, ignorance is bliss." Vindication!
- Jennie Lin

Chris, I think there is more variablity with cheap wines: even if you find a decent one, every bottle won't necessarily be good and the nex year might be crap. Part of what you are paying for is consistency.
- Clare Dibble
Claire, I was just making that point earlier tonight about Dom Perignon. It's not that Dom is *necessarily* ten times better than a $12 prosecco or $30 bottle of another champagne, but it is very, very consistently good, from vintage to vintage, and you're (at least in part) paying for a known, predictable quality.
- Karim
Um... where were you buying old Ridge Paso Robles Zins for < $30?? gimme gimme gimme.
- Dylan Parker
"ARABIC CALLIGRAPHY’ IS A HYBRID ENGLISH TERM. ‘Calligraphy’, taken from the Greek kallos (beauty) and graphe (writing), is literally understood in the western perception as ‘beautiful (hand) writing’ of the Arabic language. Yet the Arabic term for what we call calligraphy invites closer inspection. Within the Arabic language the transliterated word ‘Khatt’ (خط) is derived from ‘line’, ‘design’, and ‘construction’. The philological connotations get lost in the translated term ‘calligraphy’. From a type design perspective I think this rather an astonishing difference."

Weirdly, I was happier when he was anonymous - I liked the idea of little elves running through and creating art when no-one was looking.
- Jennifer Dittrich
selling art at the prices he does i don't think he's middle class anymore

This device enable tagging on the go.. Like BrightKite, it geo tags but is integrated with GPS, so you don't have to physically punch in addresses. There's a dynamic map that enables starring places you like and finding other places users have tagged.... That's so AWESOME!!
