"Prune’s dish is undoubtedly Gabrielle Hamilton’s homage to the roasted marrowbones at the London restaurant St. John, Fergus Henderson’s temple of off-cuts, shot game and rare-breed meat that has no close equivalent in the United States — Henderson’s is a place that moves rolled spleen and roast squirrel the way Junior’s sells pastrami sandwiches. Like the Prune dish, Henderson’s bones are served with coarse salt and a salty mound of parsley chopped just enough to tame the marrow. You scoop a bit of the marrow onto a slice of toast, garnish it with the parsley and sprinkle on a few grains of salt — the flavor explodes in your mouth, beefy richness almost beyond description, punctuated with crunchy bursts of salinity and finally tempered by the bitterness of the herb. Eating marrowbones is as old as civilization — in a Norse legend, the mischievous god Loki prods a mortal into snapping open the roasted thighbone of one of Thor’s goats and sucking out the marrow. It is a transgressive act, feasting on an es" - edythe via Bookmarklet

agreed with the post as it applies to Twitter but maybe I am hung up on the multipurpose use of the term "microblogging". Are tumblr and posterus microblogs? FriendFeed? Are the architectures for those "wrong"? - Robert Seidman
It seems that the most difficult part about these new messaging services is that the architecture has to accommodate the ability to slice and dice the messages to create a unique stream based on friends. - Caleb Elston

A lot of speculation -- based on pseudo reverse engineering -- it would be interesting if FF commented on this. This goes to the core of what is the essence/power of FF I think. - Brian Sullivan
Brian - you're right. Call it empirically-based speculation. Interesting to hypothesize the "why" of the bounce-to-the-top algorithm. - Hutch Carpenter

Just to add more speculation to the mix -- I am guessing that clicking on a link (or playing a video/mp3 inline) also counts as a "touch" maybe with more weight than either a comment or a like - Brian Sullivan

"In the end, you can't change your body chemistry. But you can wear one of four Centers for Disease Control approved repellents. A friend of mine just started keeping bees. He reckons they like some people okay, but will attack others for no particular reason. Pheromones or something. - john conroy
Stay away from DEET as there is too much mixed research. Skin so Soft is a good choice (the scent can get to me, though). In Haiti, I learned the value of a good sleeping net. Luckily, the skeeters haven't hatched enmass yet here in Mich, giving the festivities of the day a better outlook. Do skeeter eaters actually eat skeeters? - Michael W. May
I've always been the mosquito magnet of whoever I'm with - which sucks because I'm also mildly allergic, even w/out any scratching they blow up on me. Fortunately my wife seems to have slightly sweeter blood and she tends to take the hits for me now. That's why I married her. ;) - felix
Yup. I'm the magnet, and the hubby is not. Even if I don't scratch the bug bites they swell up. **sigh** I stay inside a lot. :P - Cheryl Jones
I've always wondered if it was "regional." For instance, when I first moved to Dallas, it was months before mosquitos would bite me. They would drain other people dry before they even touched me. Sadly, that faded over time. - Harvey Simmons

Thanks for posting this edythe. I've always wondered about this. My wife will get eaten alive outside, while I often get no bites. Wasn't sure if it was strange luck. - Hutch Carpenter
Two natural repellents - lots of vinegar in the diet, and a few drops of lavender oil behind the ears and on ankles. I hike and kayak a lot, and refuse to use chemical repellents. - Jody Carbone
MWM: you may have something there. I moved here from Louisiana, and I eat a lot less garlic than I used to. This calls for an experiment! - Harvey Simmons
Jody, I've read that vinegar (acetic acid) is actually an alkalizing agent... the article says that mosquitoes are attracted to lactic acid produced as a result of exertion. So increasing your pH makes sense! Now, I'm off to patent my mosquito-repelling, anti-fatigue sports drink... :-D - Karim

edythe, thanks :-) slightly confused now because I'm reading citric acid can substitute for vinegar. citric acid is used mostly in soda pop, which is likewise acid. i hope i just didn't invent the soft drink... lol - Karim

Caloric Restriction Comes in a Pill | Wired Science from Wired.com

"Regardless of mouse weight and diet, resveratrol worked wonders. At two years of age, or the mouse equivalent of senescence, the mice were more coordinated than their non-dosed counterparts. Their bones were thicker and stronger, their eyes free of cataracts, their hearts beating strong. At the cellular level, tissues displayed gene-level changes almost identical to those produced by caloric restriction. The mitochondria of resveratrol-taking mice also proved healthy. Mitochondrial degeneration has been implicated in a variety of diseases, leading some researchers to believe that heart disease, cancer and dementia -- all the so-called diseases of aging -- have a common root. "The mice had tremendous health benefits from taking resveratrol," said de Cabo. "If any of those parameters translate to humans, it will be tremendous." When Sinclair and de Cabo's mice started taking resveratrol they were one year old, roughly equivalent to 35 human years. The success suggests that the drug's benefits could be en" - Paul Buchheit via Bookmarklet

A business model that has a foundation on locking up user data to keep switching costs high seems like a recipe for long-term disaster. We've seen several times that "open-ness" of data or knowledge generally trumps locked-down-sown-up0tight-"mine mine mine"- perspectives on data. Facebook (and others) need to figure out how to keep users, make a dollar or two and still share user data. The overall benefit to the community at large (and to Facebook) will be larger than if they just horde data. - Tony Haenn
Tony, Facebook has said it wants to continue to open up. This past year, their platform and other efforts forced their rivals to be more open (although they don't seem to get much credit for that any more). I know they're being conservative about it now -- at least by the standards of other entrepreneurs who want access to their data -- but considering the pressure they're under to monetize in any way, conservatism is understandable. - Eric Eldon
@Eric - Sure. My comment in retrospect shouldn't have been so specific to Facebook. Regardless, I still see sites that try to build walled gardens. Hoppefully, the pressure to monetize coupled with the pressure to open up data will create some new & interesting business models. Ben Franklin "necessity is the mother of all invention" (or people do crazy/stupid things when their back is against the wall) - Tony Haenn
@Tony - The other thing I'd like to point out is that while being open can help win in the long run, a lot of the folks who get it right in version 1 or 2 are closed systems. There's a good reason for that - for open systems to work well, the "rules of the road" around what should be opened up needs to be clear. Being "open" isn't a dominant strategy. While we like to pick on Yahoo! and AOL, both were fairly closed for a long time and enjoyed long periods of success (or perhaps even dominance). - Charles Hudson
@Tony. I guess I find it funny that so many people yell at Facebook (and other services) to open up, but nobody bothers to explain how exactly it is in Facebook's interest to do so at the present. It's a case of unaligned incentives. Certainly, opening up could be a win-win situation, it's just not clear how it is yet. - Eric Eldon
@Eric - I couldn't agree more. The internet has fostered a feeling amongst a certain segment that demands everything be free. "Information just wants to be free". However, the benefits to an open platform for the company are relatively straightforward. With bits and bytes you can let share them with someone else and if they do something neat, you both can profit, or at least not be harmed. - Tony Haenn
@Eric Look at twitter. If they didn't let summize (or hashtags, or the other dozen services) play with their data, would they be nearly as popular? Would they have survived the system meltdown they are currently struggling through? I don't think they would have. A closed system there would have died an ignoble death. Openness from an information standpoint leads to strength and innovation - Tony Haenn
@Tony I totally recognize the mutually beneficial innovations that can stem from open services. Facebook is just at a point where it needs to start making some serious money and it's not clear how being open is going to help it do that, at least right now. - Eric Eldon
