Congrats to Paul, Bret, and the whole FriendFeed gang. But I hope you bring a big shot of openness into the Facebook ecosystem, because it doesn't feel that way right now.
NO Congrats or whatsoever "to Paul, Bret, and the whole FriendFeed gang. But I hope you bring a big shot of openness into the Facebook ecosystem, because it doesn't feel that way right now." Matt, dear! You Stole My Words! ROFL :)))) Just curious - is there anything more important than money? It seems NOT ROFLMAO
- Lora Lufark
Besides being closed, Facebook has never adequately addressed serious privacy issues in its past. I strongly distrust them as a company and I'm sad to hear that they're gobbling up a service and a group of people I do trust. But if both services end up being elevated to FriendFeed's high standard then this will be a great day in hindsight.
- Doug
Well put doug, I feel same way: I trust FF, I dont trust FB. I'm skeptical this acquisition will change FB enough for me to trust it, but we'll see.

Has anyone got an idea for a friendfeed alternative?
- Ru Viljoen
Ru, I think Hellotxt.com might be a decent alternative to Friendfeed (it can also post to Friendfeed for you so you can keep your feed if you wish). I may start using it instead. Not sure. There's also identi.ca which claims to be adding more features for cross-posting. They use the Opensource Laconi.ca platform
- PurpleZoe
thx for suggestions but looks like those are both exclusively microblogging platforms.
- Ru Viljoen
no congrats, but I agree with the rest.
- Kamilah Gill
Identi.ca is mostly a microblog (I hear cross-posting networks should be enabled soon), but Hellotxt.com is a lifestream (you can cross-post and etc across networks) I believe. Unfortunately it's slow at times. I'll miss Friendfeed if it gets sucked into the Facebook network, instead of remaining a stand-alone app. Not at all happy about the acquisition.
- PurpleZoe
3 other possibilities: lifestream.fm, Socialthing.com and possibly Streamy.com
- PurpleZoe
Now might be a good time for socialthing to exit private beta and enter public
- Ru Viljoen
not all users are equal when it comes to *anything*. As an aside, maybe FriendFeed should have a "likes" barter system so that some of us could transfer likes to Polly and Mitchell when they run out!
- Robert Seidman
Looks interesting. On a rather unrelated note, why does the embedded Google Docs use an icon well known for "fast forward" to mean "next slide" (http://images.google.com/images...)? Or is the ►► also learned for "next slide"?
- Philipp Lenssen
I thought the talk went pretty well. People seemed to enjoy it, and the video should be up soon.
- Matt Cutts
Philipp, good question. I don't have a good answer. :)
- Matt Cutts
Matt another question: why iframes has been choosed for insert google web elements inside the web pages? With the (actual) italian law about accessibility there is a requirement that asks to use HTML 4.01 or XHTML 1.0 with DTD Strict instead of transictional (i'm working now to upgrade this law guidelines for respect the new WCAG 2.0, but at now this is the problem...
- Roberto Scano
My FF says "Sorry, but this browser does not support web presentations.". Risking a violation of intergalactic law (?browserok=true) I learned that it won't work very well -- really. Next faced (switched to chrome in the meantime) with "WP takes care of 80-90% of the mechanics of SEO" I'm asking myself why I don't gather my usual hacks taking care of the remaining issues in a plugin. ;) Thanks for sharing Matt.

I used to have a Mk1 TiVo before they pulled out the UK. I still miss it.
- Chris Nixon
And I've had one since the beginning. They used to have an infomercial. I woke in the middle of one night, flipped on the TV and the rest is history.
- Tom Landini
It sucks that they are in emerging markets like Taiwan and Australia, but not back in the UK.
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
It sounds trite but ... TiVo really did change my world. Got it just before my daughter was born because ... how else was I going to keep up with my TV. It did that ... and more.

This is a dollar bill taped to the floor of FriendFeed's headquarters. It's a bit of social engineering. They figured out it kept people from tripping on the cord cover because people noticed the money on the floor.
- Robert Scoble
The dollar bill trick doesn’t work with strippers though ;)
- Moved to Facebook
@Earl: Consider it a stripper-filter, then. You know someone's a stripper if they trip over it.
- April Buchheit
for some reason i expect a "stripper filter" to be something coded using regular expressions. sad, i know.

The message here is that Web 2.0 companies are so ignorant of money and revenue that they even step over a dollar on the floor

- Vezquex: God of FF
I forgot about that photo. It does work, though. Everytime I visit friendfeed's offices I see the dollar and I'm careful not to trip over it. :-)
- Robert Scoble
That's dumb. Why couldn't they afford to run the cord somewhere where it wouldn't be in the way in the first place?
- Robert Peña
As an IE I can state that's definitely not something to publicize. Definitely not OSHA Kosher.
- Adi
Reminds me of the deli counter in grocery store in Scotts Valley across the street from NorCal offices of MetaCreations (the Fractal Design arm of it). Local companies'd go there for lunch daily. PROBLEM: Deli counter pencils (for marking your sandwich menu) disappeared at frightful rate. SOLUTION: Deli affixed pencils with price label. Price: $100.00. Pencils stayed at store. :)

I first came across Louis back in July of 2008. I had no idea how social media 'worked' but something told me, he was a 'big player'. I subscribed to him across the board, he reciprocated, but because my feed back when I first started FriendFeeding was ALL fluff, he unsubscribed from me right away. And I admit, my feelings were hurt. I sent him a message on Facebook to tell him: I WILL regain credibility, to let you know I am worth subscribing to. Somehow, some way. Well, it worked. By just being myself. One day on PixelBits, among the silly posts of Star Wars, Lego, and gummi bears, I wrote about Goosh. A few minutes after I published, LG left me a comment, sent me an email that said: "Wow, you're a geek?" Me: "Um, yes?" Little did I know, something I wrote because I was interested in, garnered enough attention for him to extend an invitation to post on his site. And from there, Louis and I became more than Internet buddeis, we became real friends. :)
- Mona Nomura
Louis- I do not know the ways to thank, appreciate, and articulate how much you mean to me, personally, as well as the community. You are humble, open, approachable, and a one of a kind man. But can you imagine the outrage that would occur if they did!
- Bryce Roney
Bryce, I don't see why there would be an outrage? Google are already integrating DoubleClick and are analysing your data when visiting sites which are using Adsense if they are Tech based etc to make the ads more relevant. The same should apply to Social Networks.
- Nicholas James
Maybe they should use F-Connect to give the websurfer a more personalized surfing experience. I think FB can provide a lot of value if the ads you see on your favorite blogs and websites are connected to the content AND your personal data. While you don't have any ads on your blog Louis, you still have a F-Connect button and many other might add it if they find value in it. Could it be that FB should look out of its actual boundaries?
- Zack Brandit
David, for me it would mostly be about having things like the tabs, show best of in big iPhone style category links that are easier to tap. and then possibly mitigating the need to send pics via mail2ff, and just have it direct through the app and the iphone's camera roll

Robert, have tried fftogo. Nice, but spoiled by clean BB app's like Gmail, Viigo, etc.

For FriendFeed iPhone app - how about some geo action (Brightkite)? Oh, and how about some grouping functionality (TweetDeck style)? Not too crazy, just some features that fit and exploit the iPhone's capabilities...

There's BuddyFeed but I don't like the interface and at times fails with a slow connection. Nambu has a nice interface and supports multiple social networks but its FF integration isn't complete.

I don't love BuddyFeed, on the other hand, I seem to always be in it instead of on the ff.com/iphone, so that must mean something, too. Probably just convenient - it does boot up quick.

I hate to sound like a broken record (I've said similar to this on many other discussions), but they don't have to do ANYTHING. The immediate reaction of the last season/episode of The Sopranos was of shock, disbelief, and anger, but...

From io9: "Cottle MD The high concept speaks for itself; it's House in space. Galactica's chain-smoking, ornery doctor has been an oddly calming presence throughout the show's history, never failing in his ability to speak bluntly and make even the worst situation just a little bit bleaker. This is what I'm suggesting - An hour-long drama about Cottle moving to a new hospital ship where the boss hates him but also has a crush on him, he has three flawed geniuses as assistants, and John Hodgman's brain surgeon is his long-suffering best friend. Scoble, saying "who knew I was so close to a news story 1.5 years later"would be no different that if you had climbed Mt. St. Helen's in Nov of 1979 only to hear of its eruption in May of 1980. You being on that plane has NOTHING to do with this story. Nice try, though.
- Dave Madison
Dave: interesting point of view. But in this case the affair was still going on. At least I didn't die to get these pictures like I would have if I had been at the eruption of Mt. St. Helens.
- Robert Scoble
Robert you r being silly. You wouldn't have risked dying because you wouldn't have been there. And u weren't there for this bimbo eruption.
- Dave Madison
You just happened to get a picture of Reile 1.5 years before anyone knew what was going on. If I got a picture of Lewinsky walking down Penn. Ave in 1995, does that mean "I was there?". Hey! I got a random ok picture of Spritzer on a shuttle to DC. Guess that makes me a part of history, too!
- Dave Madison
Dave: the thing is I WAS there. Just because I didn't know what was going on at the time, doesn't mean I didn't capture the two of them together. But, whatever, I really don't care either way. If you had a picture of Lewinsky and Clinton together on Penn Ave. you would have had an interesting picture too. Your argument doesn't hold, though, because if I had a picture of St. Helens at the time it exploded I would have had a historical picture, even if I didn't understand what I had taken a picture of.

Overdue piece Mike. Thanks. I watched several services disintegrate over the past few weeks and finally gave in to 'block'. As you said, life's too short. The key is to not feed it (except possibly as you did just now). Don't recognize it. Don't answer it. If we ignore them, maybe they'll just go away?
- Charlie Anzman
agreed charlie, ignoring is best but also don't think they'll ever go away either
- mike "glemak" dunn
One final thought (having just read one). Stop mentioning them by name in your posts.
- Charlie Anzman
agreed charlie, have noticed that too which was one of the points in my post - takes two to tango - also, i've seen some folks directly call someone a troll but when i read what's being labeled "trollish" its simply a very strong differing of opinions thus someone (usually a popular person) is overreacting...
- mike "glemak" dunn
thanks jeremiah - it really was just a humorous observation :)

agreed melanie - a very important part of learning is the art of listening to both sides, like-minded and dissenting
- mike "glemak" dunn
My particular tactic is the more trollish they become, rather than ignore them I respond ever more briefly. I find that nothing bugs and deflates a troll more than when they spend 2 hours writing an invective filled response to them then you acknowledge them and respond in 6 or 10 words. It works better than ignoring them.
- Dave Slusher

I have to say that FriendFeed is extremely good at weeding out trolls. The nature of the platform makes it amazingly easy to spread the word about a troll or spammer that everyone can block. (Which I assume triggers a flag somewhere in FriendFeed HQ)

"The success of the Commodore 64 was unheard of; it sold 22 million units, the highest number for any single model of a computer in history, according to the Computer History Museum. ... Tramiel himself had a confrontation with Canadian investor Irving Gould and Tramiel resigned on Jan. 13, 1984. The problem with doing a follow-up on the Commodore 64 was due to chaos that followed Tramiel’s departure. To build the next machine, the company had to build everything from scratch."
- Paul Buchheit
from Bookmarklet
I wonder what the "confrontation" was about. From http://www.commodore.ca/history...: "Irving Gould and Jack Tramiel had a successful working relationship until 1984 when an argument that has yet to be fully explained caused Jack Tramiel to quit on the spot." From http://www.scripophily.net/atcorst...: "The nature of their quarrel was never publicly disclosed. Today, however, Tramiel says he wanted to "grow" the company, and Gould didn't."
- ⓞnor
"The Commodore Story" aka "On the Edge" has a whole chapter on Jack Tramiel leaving Commodore. It suggests a couple of theories about the disagreement. One is that Jack wanted his sons to succeed him in running the company, but Gould disagreed. Leonard Tramiel is quoted as saying that this had nothing to to do with Jack leaving.
- Laurence Gonsalves
Jack Tramiel is quoted saying that the issues revolved around financing: "Just because we were a billion-dollar company, we did not have to throw money out the window like a billion-dollar company." and also "I was of the view that we should have made a new stock offering when our shares were highly traded... [Gould] thought this would water down his portion of the company and he would lose influence..."
- Laurence Gonsalves
BTW: The Commodore Story is a great book if you're interested in Commodore and/or computer history in the 70's through 90's. I have a blog post about the book here: http://xenomachina.com/2006... (the book used to be called "On the Edge", but was apparently renamed)

Great article, my first computer I owned and worked on was the Commodore 64 when I got exposed to computers in elementary school. My dad actually wanted me to get an IBM PC Jr, but I wanted a C-64 because the school had it. I'm glad I was one of the people that owned a C-64, and I learned my first programming skills Commodore Basic from the C-64. Thanks Jack Tramiel for the C-64 days!

this is a show the critics, and seemingly millions on the Internet love, but only averaged 900,000 viewers in its first season. Thrilled. Every craft excels... art direction, costume, makeup, cast, direction. don't know if it will ever achieve mass appeal. It's missing some of the things that conventional wisdom says you need: likeable characters, explosions, big yucks. There's a strong dark undercurrent to everything. But that's okay. Even the Cell-Phone Law is a "no-enforce" law. And even so, it's $20 for the first offense and $50 for the second... what exactly are they expecting from these laws?
- Brandon
I read recently that after all the petty fines and charges are added in, the final penalty for a first offense comes in at around $65. Anyone who thinks they can text and drive is mistaken. I do think, though, that to try and prohibit every possible distraction individually is nonsensical.
- Jack (a.k.a. Jeber)
I like to hear the CHP talk about this in terms of the importance of two hands on the wheel. Maybe if my car lacked power steering or was made before 1973, I'd agree.

I CAN text and drive. Do it every so often, but I have a Blackberry. However, it does reduce the safety factor while driving...But that's why it's important to keep good safety zones while driving...and not let anything overwhelm your ability to concentrate on driving.
- Alex Scoble
My car doesn't have power steering. I love it. :-)
- Lisa L. Seifert
And yeah, it is stupid for them to codify it into law. Since police have the ability to stop and ticket anyone driving unsafely already.
- Alex Scoble
