Device Like 'Star Trek' Replicator Might Fly on Space Station
"Space explorers have yet to get their hands on the replicator of "Star Trek" to create anything they might require. But NASA has developed a technology that could enable lunar colonists to carry out on-site manufacturing on the moon, or allow future astronauts to create critical spare parts during the long trip to Mars. The method, called electron beam freeform fabrication (EBF3), uses an electron beam to melt metals and build objects layer by layer. Such an approach already promises to cut manufacturing costs for the aerospace industry, and could pioneer development of new materials. It has also thrilled astronauts on the International Space Station by dangling the possibility of designing new tools or objects, researchers said." - LANjackal from Bookmarklet

"When finding inspiration for your next project or a new brush that is just right, web design blogs have come a long way over the past year. Some have stuck with us for many years, faded away to be forgotten or seemed to have become popular in a short amount of time. This is a collection of the 16 most influential web design blogs on the internets in 2009. In some form or another they have all helped us become better designers, coders, and all around rockstars. Plus, they give out loads of awesome freebies and ask nothing in return. How much more awesomeness can you ask for? Let’s have a look shall we! 1. Smashing Magazine Founded in September 2006, Smashing Magazine delivers useful and innovative information to Web designers and developers. Twitter Followers: 79,000 – @smashingmag smashing-mag 2. Abduzeedo Abduzeedo is a blog about design. What began as a means for backup after an ugly robbery, is now one of the design world’s most sought after blog for inspiration and tutorials.... more... - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML from Bookmarklet

Could people learn to love Microsoft once more? | PC Pro
"Microsoft seemed adrift, bereft of ideas or inspiration as its empire was systematically hacked to bits by Google, Apple and Mozilla. And yet, two years later and the company is once again the toast of the tech press. Windows 7 is good, but one product’s not enough to rescue an enormous company’s reputation. What on earth has happened? Is it really okay to like Microsoft again?" - Arawak from Bookmarklet
It's more like disliking Google and Apple more. So Microsoft is "o.k". - Amit Morson
Microsoft seems to be releasing software that isn't disapointing, I think that's a big factor forward. Giving people the surprise of something that actually works well - Robert Davies

If the worse came to the worst and the FF founders told us they were switching off the service, what would it take to organise a user-controlled group to take the reins? How much does it cost to run FriendFeed?
We could each put in a little cash to keep funding going, for example. - Kol Tregaskes

Strangely I find using FriendFeed useful. ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
Intellectual property + ongoing development = Big number ... Servers, bandwidth, & maintenance maybe not so much. - Dan Freeman
I can't help with any financial support, but I can help out in other ways. Like maybe someone feels like posting some comment that might be somewhat offensive, crude or inappropriate in some way, but they can't find the perfect words. I could be a resource for such people as I am an equal opportunity oppressor that believes that political correctness is neither political, nor correct. :-) - Morgan
Cristo - It's not 'wasting' time. It's 'spending time doing what I as a free citizen of the Earth feel like doing'. - Morgan
But I think that Dan said it like it really is. You gotta compensate those that built it to begin with. Those greedy bastards!! Ooops. they can read this can't they....Um....awkward....:-) - Morgan
Cristo, you must like 'wasting time' then. ;-) Seriously though, I don't see doing what you want as wasting time. People take that opportunity in many different ways. We take it to use FF. - Kol Tregaskes
might be worth putting some more serious thought toward this angle actually .... Setting up as a non-profit would take a lot of the pressure (and overhead) out of the equation (no need to persue business model with outsize returns driven by VC economics). Servers + bandwidth + sysadmins might be within reach of user-funded budget. Respectable development effort might need a rich uncle backing The FriendFeed Foundation though - solid open-source development project still would want full-time developers. - Dan Freeman
I'd help we could put this in the cloud and run with it from there (ensuring excellent quality backups as well). I'd also help with dollars. But it looks like Paul B is still working on the system and moving servers. So who knows, but if the place goes up, count me in technological and dollar support. DM me if needed. - Dan owns Comicsforge.com

Ficly is Ficlets 2.0: super-short bursts of collaborative fiction
"To participate, you just have to log in with Google, Yahoo!, Facebook or OpenID, then find a story and write a prequel or a sequel in 1024 characters. Your piece doesn't have to stand alone, it could just flesh out a character or place, or start a new scene for someone else to finish. I'm looking forward to reading some of the stuff coming out of Ficly, and speculating that maybe the evolution of print-on-demand services will play well with it. It would be too cool to have a long story you helped write shipped to your door in book form." - LANjackal from Bookmarklet

One problem with creating private groups for Twitter feeds to simulate imaginary friends is the username Friendfeed suggests is the same as the private group name. If I forget to edit it, I'll in effect be squatting on that name. It's a problem if that Twitter user wants to join Friendfeed later.
