iTunes Home Sharing is simply awesome. I'm using it right now to copy/sync all my music to my new laptop and it's working great. It's exactly how I've wanted iTunes to share all along.
How is this different from sharing the library the way it used to work? Or is this more useful for when you want to disconnect the network and still have access to all the music?
- Benjamin Golub
Benjamin: exactly. It works like the transfer purchases feature on iPods and iPhones: you don't have to be connected to the home network to play them, because the files are copied to your computer.
- Mark Trapp
Wait, you can finally use the songs you buy on more than one computer without having to jump through hoops? My boss would've loved this feature five years ago. Explaining DRM to him was not fun, he just wanted his $1 songs to be playable on all of his PCs.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Ben, the main advantage is that you can set it to automatically sync the libraries so that a copy of new purchases is on both computers. I'm just using it to copy my whole library to a new computer.
- Ross Miller
So is it possible for me and my wife to share music, on each of our computers, bought on different accounts, before and after we have gotten married?
- Rasmus Lauridsen
Rasmus: I doubt it. This feature, and all the features in the iTunes/iPod/iPhone ecosystem, only allow one active account.
- Mark Trapp
and of files you haven't aquired via itunes?
- alphaxion
But you can activate more than one account in Itunes... I have mine + my wife's two accounts authorized. But yeah it's probably going to be another case of having to still do it manually
- Rasmus Lauridsen
Alphaxion, it just copies them over like any purchases from iTunes. When you open the home sharing center, there's a view to 'only see songs that are not on this computer'. You just select which songs you want to copy and hit import.
- Ross Miller
On a related note, something I've been wondering about recently is the best way to share a library between two Windows user accounts on the same machine. Seems silly to sync them when the files are on the same machine, but I'd like new purchases to appear automatically. Is that possible somehow?
- Tony Ruscoe
from iPhone
Tony, I think you can do that by changing the 'iTunes Media folder location' to be the same destination. Just choose which /Music/iTunes you want to use and set them both to that one. You can change the location from the Advanced tab in Preferences.
- Ross Miller
Thanks. I think I'll have to try that. I did wonder about doing that but wasn't sure whether that would just copy the files to the same folder, leaving the libraries out of sync though.

Hell, my kid is "not accepted" at school and he couldn't be any more in the "majority" demographic if he tried (white and male)... once you are targeted you're picked on, no matter what you look like. You have to figure out the best way to stand up for yourself because no one else is going to do it for you. :( No amount of political correctness is going to fix it.
- Lindsay
I am liking this because of Lindsay's comment above - "once you are targeted you're picked on, no matter what"... "You have to figure out the best way to stand up for yourself because no one else is going to do it for you." (The most prolific comment I have read here. :)
- Space Cowboy
No one is going to do it for you all the time, that is.

Why is the text in English instead of Dutch?
- Gabe
English b/c in the Netherlands we have many people living from other countries; and almost all Dutch can read English (at least that is my take)
- Jeroen De Miranda
E-trade offers them for $25 https://us.etrade.com/e.... The way it works is that this keychain thing spits out a new number every minute, and you include that number with your password at login. Even if someone gets your password (due to a keylogger or the like), it will quickly be invalid.
- Paul Buchheit
Blizzard almost never has them in stock. Whenever they get a batch they sell out in a few hours. Apparently they work. lol
- Heather
I do not know how reliable they are now but a few years ago, the quartz in this would get out of sync for a non trivial percentage of users, which resulted in a lot of customer support issues.
- Edwin Khodabakchian
bought one for the hubby's warcraft account. he hasn't been hacked since. (nearly once every couple weeks prior to that)
- Nathalie, Dreamer of FF
I would pay for this option also and being that I run GApps at work, would also do it for all staff.
- Travis Koger
from iPhone
What would keep someone from writing this as an iPhone/Android app?
- Matt Cutts
It would need to hook into the Google auth system Matt. (or automatically change my password every minute, which would probably trigger some abuse system inside google)
- Paul Buchheit
Matt: Nothing, as demonstrated by Blizzard's implementation of it as a free iPhone app already. :)
- Stephen Mack
I wish this could end phishing, but it can't, because "it will quickly be invalid" doesn't help much if it's used to generate a session token the very moment it's entered. Perhaps the key should ask you what OS/browser you're using, how recently you logged in on that machine, etc. -- facts known to Google and associated with your browser session -- and generate different numbers depending on your answers. Tricky business.
- Daniel Dulitz
It doesn't solve all problems Daniel, but it does solve some. The twitter hack for example was apparently due to a guessed password or something (though I'm not up-to-date on the news, so maybe that's no longer the story).
- Paul Buchheit
Frankly, I want an RFID-like chip in my cell phone + ubiquitous RFID readers. The cell phone would also require you to type a password or PIN, so it's something you have + something you know. And there's a fake PIN that looks like it worked but causes a lockdown behind the scenes, so if you get mugged you tell people the PIN is 5555 when your PIN is really 2343.
- Matt Cutts
Paul, it's just a lot easier to make this happen if it solves the _biggest_ problem. :-)
- Daniel Dulitz
I think the biggest problem is that people want absolute convenience and absolute security. I have never had any personal information stolen or accounts hacked. It might be because I'm a boring person not worth stealing from, but it could also be that I don't put information all over the place. I only use my phone to make calls, I only download from well known sites, I don't allow porn...
- Heather
I disagree with that reasoning Daniel. The phishing problem is real, but today's Twitter problem for example does not appear to have been phishing related, and probably would have been prevented by a device such as this -- is that not sufficient evidence that this solvable problem is worth solving? It also prevents people from using bad passwords, using the same password on multiple accounts, etc, which is very useful in the apps-for-your-domain context.
- Paul Buchheit
As soon as PayPal offered theirs I bought it immediately and like many others, I'm in line to get one for our two WoW accounts. I loved these as a Systems Admin where we required them to get past the firewalls if you were a remote worker.
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
+1 Paul, I've been a SecureID user many years at work, and with ETrade, so I've got two, so far, but it makes you wonder if every account you used required SecureID, you'll eventually need a REALLY BIG keychain. ;)
- .LAG liked that
There is no reason why the same SecureID fob can't be used with more than one site.
- Jauder Ho
Matt Cutts: BlackBerry (maybe only BES) has had "password under duress" for a while. When enabled you swap the first and last characters of your handset password, it unlocks but also triggers admin side alerts. Quite cool, but I suspect the only people that use it will be the military :)
- Alex Lomas
jh: yeah, RSA should probably offer this as a service; get one SecurID from them, and you can register it with any site that supports it.
- Tudor Bosman
Paul, no, I don't think the fact that some hacks would be prevented by a method is sufficient reason to implement that method. Apps has supported SAML for quite a while, see http://code.google.com/apis... , so Apps admins can use auth methods of their choice including this one. If I'm going to take your $25 for a token, I'd like to make it more...
- Daniel Dulitz
@jh, @Tudor: yeah it would be great if one SecureID could service multiple accounts for the owner, but i think each key fob is unique to the account holder and service they're issued for; some foreknowledge of the site/account the fobs will be used for is required. with the one I use at work, I signed some paperwork, sent it to Tech, and then got the fob few days later. Sounds like a potential customer-service nightmare for RSA if they when that route.
- .LAG liked that
They'd probably pick up more paid accounts. Just the concept would probably convince numerous new users.
- Charlie Anzman
Great idea! It's also a great way of branding the name if it's on a key chain of something else cool. Verisign offers it as a second layer of security on their OpenID accounts. They were charging before, but I just checked and it's free now. I'll have to get it for my account. Two-factor identification should be standard everywhere, especially on bank accounts.
- Michael Fidler
I'm waiting for Google to handle all my Internet passwords, all encrypted behind a master Google accounts password and a security calculator/keychain type of mechanism. I wouldn't perhaps need to use that physical extra security code each time I log in. It could be set to once a day, and secure login can be reset at any time during the day (if you don't feel confortable using public web terminal at a netcafe, you can simply activate secure login for any activity done after you logout.
- Charbax
Also, I believe Google should easily show me a complete log of all activities on my Google account, this way I could find out if something fishy is going on. If one is paranoid while using a public terminal, there should be a "monitor in realtime all activity" window so you can see if anything weird is going on while you are logged in and you should imediately be able to cancel/restore/logout in realtime once any of that fishy activity has been detected.
- Charbax
For $25 -- that's worth the peace of mind.
- CarolAnnB
Matt, regarding RFID: I've seen applications using bluetooth for a similar purpose. If a specific phone comes within range, the computer unlocks/wakes up/launches the missiles/etc. I'm not sure that RFID adds much, though I'm unfamiliar with how easy it is to spoof the identity of either bluetooth or RFID.
- DGentry
in case you weren't aware, there are other options for SecurID other than the fob - like the mobile app http://www.rsa.com/node... or software token (RSA is an EMC company, my employer)
- Stuart Miniman
I have my paypal key, I feel secure because of it. And it only cost me $5.
- Luis
The future of security is going to include some strong password/identity tools. Agreed on the value of the rsa key, could our smart phones generate similar sequences without risking theft?
- Mark Essel
from iPhone
@Charbax: Gmail (and possibly other apps?) does show you when someone else is logged in at the same time as you are, as well as their IP. Not precisely what you're suggesting, but is still quite helpful.
- Joel Webber
surprised these things are still popular. Years ago we used them at GE and perhaps they still do... But wouldn't it be more convenient to add a dynamic part to a password with a question like your wife's age + XX, or day first child was born + XX or year this picture was taken + XX. The variation of lets say 5 questions plus a random addition or subtraction would add enough variation and security no ? curious to see this your comments.
- Bart LePoole
I have the Paypal one, and one for my BofA account. I would definitely get one for Google and for my Amazon account. *HINT*
- ha3rvey (chee-la-key-les)
Why would I want one for every account? Why can't I use the same one for all my accounts?
- Gabe
paul, that's a great idea for a start-up (btw user should have *one* item for all accounts)
- Massimo MaxKava Cavazzini
Stuart: thanks cool that rsa is proactive about it. It also looks like Matt suggested mobile devices take on this responsibility earlier in the thread

I hate compact parking spaces. It's a safety issue, getting in an out of your car so close to another. And this guy has a tow package on his truck. So maybe he needs the towing capacity to haul medical supplies to disaster-ravaged areas. (trying, here)

I can't confirm on 2009 paint but in the old days ya know hypothetically like 10 years ago maybe, soda on a car ate through the paint pretty dang quickly so it's a wee bit more than a mess. :)

AJ: Arnold Schwarzenegger was possibly the first person to order a Hummer (before the civilian version was even in production). It's unlikely he would own such a puny version as the one pictured.

Just a baby hummer tho, need the real thing parked there!

I like Hummers. Love SUVs. Have no problem if you want to own one as long as you stay off my 1989 Dodge Carvan's butt in heavy traffic. Then I don't care what you're driving, I'm hitting the brakes. "You are looking at pictures of a house I built for our family in Wales. It was built by myself and my father in law with help from passers by and visiting friends. 4 months after starting we were moved in and cosy. I estimate 1000-1500 man hours and £3000 put in to this point. Not really so much in house buying terms (roughly £60/sq m excluding labour). The house was built with maximum regard for the environment and by reciprocation gives us a unique opportunity to live close to nature. Being your own (have a go) architect is a lot of fun and allows you to create and enjoy something which is part of yourself and the land rather than, at worst, a mass produced box designed for maximum profit and convenience of the construction industry. Building from natural materials does away with producers profits and the cocktail of carcinogenic poisons that fill most modern buildings."

WARNING: AMC theaters are running FAKE IMAX's and charging $5 extra for a slightly bigger screen. Boycott IMAX, AMC, and Regal. Don't let them fool you. (From "Aziz is Bored") - http://azizisbored.tumblr.com/post...
"...we get in the theatre and its just a slightly bigger than normal screen and NOT the usual standard huge 72 ft IMAX screen. I was very upset and apparently this problem is happening all over at Regal and AMC theatres."
- Stephen Mack
from Bookmarklet
.LAG, possibly! IMAX's argument is you're getting a certified digital picture and digital sound, so even though the screen is smaller than at more traditional IMAX venues, they claim it's still an IMAX experience. The analogy their CEO apparently is making is that a Series 3 BMW is still a BMW even if it's smaller than a Series 7 BMW. I don't buy that, personally. IMAX has come to mean a certain size screen, and they should be more upfront about what consumers get for their extra money.
- Stephen Mack
Stephen... you're right: it's a digital picture + a HUGE screen that we're paying the extra money for... but then, in this economy, everyone is under pressure to make their "numbers" if you can get more people to pay IMAX money without having to invest in IMAX equipment, your box office numbers will look better than they really are. It's American business in 2009...sadly.
- .LAG liked that
<sigh>...let's see, squeezing $5-7 extra dollars out of millions of viewers... studio CFOs are salivating...fwiw, i haven't seen it yet, but the Metreon in SFO is an IMAX theater... and the screen is TITANIC. Hope to see it this weekend there, for the $17.50 per, or whatever it costs...

Last night at poker we dubbed the smaller screens "Fauxmax" but maybe "IMIN" would be better. For Bay Area folks, the *real* IMAX screens are in S.F. (Metreon), San Jose (Tech Museum), and Dublin (Regal Hacienda Crossing). Not sure if there's still one at Great America or not -- I have great memories of seeing stuff there as a kid.
- Stephen Mack
FYI: Lincoln Square IMAX is AMC. If you boycott that theater, you are boycotting the best real IMAX theater in NYC. The retrofit screens being added is another issue, also being done by AMC. Just don't broad-brush AMC Lincoln Square 13 which happens to be my go-to theater for big movies. I am going there Saturday to see the Star Trek IMAX showing. I agree with the general premise of this issue though.
- Rolf Schewe
So for folks who have tried all three formats, how does Fauxmax compare to genuine IMAX vs. ordinary screens? (Particularly if you've tried the Sunnyvale AMC Mercado fauxmax.)
- Stephen Mack
(Bumping this to test auto-merging) (oops, never mind, the other thread has a different URL) But I'll keep the bump because I'm still looking for feedback from Bay Area FFers who have been to Mercado.
- Stephen Mack
I saw Star Trek at the Mercado on the IMAX screen. It's not really any bigger of a screen there, but I do think the sound is better. Certainly more watts to pump the bass at you - you can FEEL some of the effects. Not sure it's worth an extra $4 though.

My respect for Tweedy and company just grows and grows despite the issues the band has had throughout its history. And the album is awesome!

"This one hurt a little bit, didn't it? Lost's fifth-season finale, "The Incident," was one of the show's more morose and hopeless outings in some time. Many terrible things happened and there was just one lone puppy dog on the scene to help make things happier. (There's only so much the fuzzy fella can do!) If it were an ad, would the tendency be to provide negative feedback? Should it be one giant conversation FriendFeed wide? Should you only see comments from your friends?
- Louis Gray
Louis, for how long? If an ad stayed there forever, I'd have a problem with that. I'd want a premium/paid membership to get rid of it.
- Rochelle
@Nathan, can you do 'hide all like this' Or is that something we may end up paying for? Hmm
- Mo Kargas
I don't know, Rochelle. I'm not in charge. :)
- Louis Gray
@Rochelle - some ads people want to see. Super Bowl commericals for example.
- Nathan Chase
It's a great idea and you can hide them.
- Michael Fidler
Nathan, if people want to see the ads on FriendFeed, then they can opt to not pay for a premium membership and can see all of the ads. :)
- Rochelle
I have no problem with this, it's the slickest implementation of ads I think I've ever seen (besides Google AdWords), as long as they stay away from ad companies that don't screen their ads and through popups and malware on everyone's computer.

Borrowed from Facebook "sponsored stories." Turnabout is fair play
- Christian Anderson
I understand this is the direction Facebook is taking also
- Michael Fidler
The potential of this just prepares me to yearn for a paid option.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Yeah. I could see FriendFeed power users paying to keep the ads off as a premium service. Although some people might just leave FriendFeed entirely - or some enterprisiing Greasemonkey/Stylish hacker would discover a way to hide them all via scripting
- Nathan Chase
I wonder what sort of targeting will they use for ads within feeds, when someone is bashing twitter it may seem a good time to show ad for a competitive service (say ff)
- Asankhaya Sharma
The new logon has been very successful so far. This just ensures that more people will see it. They should feature this on every individual item/post page when someone views it who's not logged in
- Michael Fidler
It is really strange not to be able to like or comment on it, but now that it shows up on the subscription management page, I guess it's really just more along the lines of an alert. I *do* like it, and the timing is sure 'nuff good.
- Kathy Fitch
They probably don't want people to comment on it because most of the comments would be complaints (not now, maybe, but later).
- Lindsay
True, Lindsay--but all the more reason to let 'er rip, I always think. Never know what ideas will be gleaned. Anyway, I'm sure they knew we'd discuss and examine elsewhere.
- Kathy Fitch
They should add 'like' to ads if this is the monetisation strategy. Similar to the way you can up vote ads in reddit. Hide counts as a down vote
- Glenn Slaven
Nice--very nice--it updates. Keeps tabs on new twitter friends not yet added here. Handy. (But yes, of course, an ad could be pushed in just the same way. One of the perks/temptations of being the one with the keys to the system. Can't deny it's efficient for bulletins, though.)
- Kathy Fitch
Jay, what are you saying is "confirmed"?
- Rochelle
Also had the permalink so the feature could easily be located for future reference.
- Kathy Fitch
I don't mind the unit per se, but not being able to comment on it seems antithetical to what FriendFeed has been working towards. And ... wouldn't you want a Like or Share option too?
- AJ Kohn
Thanks to your post (and all the similar ones) it's becoming part of a viral self-promotion campaign :-)

The disturbing thing to me would be if future ads were very sticky, and also from unscrupulous advertisers. (like the ones on Facebook) - Sitcky: I just don't have the screen realestate to spare for ad space like that ad had. Evil advertisers on Facebook: the damn IQ quizzes and Make Money Fast Online crap. I see enough on Facebook and twitter of all that. Liking ads is key. Commenting would be even better.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
ON another Note: I WOULD like to see Important FriendFeed announcements take this format: Planned outages, Known feed issues (i.e. AOL mail not going, Faceook status not importing, Twitter link down etc). And These should be sticky until acknowledged.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I wouldn't consider this a "shameless ad". It is informative and helps one to use the product better. I benefited from it.
- Roebot
I saw it when it happened. At least they labeled it appropriately.
- Martha
I just added 128 more Twitter friends to my Twitter Clone list. They just keep coming!
- Louis Gray
With like, commenting and clickthroughs, you can compute relevancy of the ad and use that to improve targeting. Furthermore, provide "feeds" for discussing products and services that are in the ads. This has so much potential. In fact, let me search for ads and create a new category of ads called "coupons"!
- Peng-Toh
Just saw this,is this FF's ad business model?
- Steve Chou
At least these guys have a potential business model! I won't mind *a few* such "shameless self promotions" or ads per day.
- Vijay
it's much too early still for FriendFeed to advertise, but probably in the end offering an ad free paid account and a free ad supported account make sense.
- Thomas Hawk
Saw this yesterday. I don't mind it but I think Thomas' idea is the best option.
