Mine is always up, but I never use it, because I actually tend to use IM more for work-ish stuff, and none of my coworkers ever bother to log on. Defeats the purpose, I think.
- DJF
Yes, because what could possibly be more antisocial than carrying on a conversation about your IM client status on Friendfeed? Oh, right. Not doing that. :-P
- Greg Schwartz
Maybe this makes me sound self-entitled and deserving, but I really am disappointed that I'm expected to pay so much money to read so many research articles online. I would love to be able to read more professional research (beyond an abstract) but not at these steep prices. It would be fine at $1 an article or something but not $20-$50+ each.
agreed - check out PLoS, http://www.plos.org/ - all open source all the time - as of last year, anything funded by NIH has to be freely available online, so things are changing, slowly
- William Harryman
Have you tried your local libraries (public and university)? Public libraries can sometimes surprise you, especially if there is statewide access to databases. Universities sometimes have agreements with publishers that allow the public to access the articles if they are on campus. Of course, open access journals like PLoS are the easiest for getting to.
- Jaclyn
the library option is good, especially if you know someone with a college id to get inter-library loans for journal articles - some schools allow the public to buy access to the library, which is also a good option
- William Harryman
Jaclyn, I would, but our public libraries are on furlough so they're closed because we can't afford to keep them open. And, AFAIK, university libraries (at least, access to their benefits like rights to journals) are restricted to students. Like William said, I think I'd have to find a student willing to let me use their access.
- Rochelle
(1) Some public libraries have online databases, so those should be open even if the branches are closed. (2) I'd check out the policies of some of the nearby universities just in case - I know some allow visitors to use their computers if you're on campus, and from those computers you can use their restricted resources. The UW website, for instance, says if you use one of their Guest...

Rochelle, and research supported with federal money needs to be made available for free. They will disclose it in the abstract "supported by funding from the National Institutes of Health". Through the library of congress you can get the article, and if they won't give it to you free, you can make a shit storm of compliance insanity for the institution. Also, writing directly to the Author, they'll usually send you a PDF, if you copy and paste the citation.
- Matthew DeVries
Definitely check out your local universities. I'm a librarian at a state university, and our databases are open to the public. At the institution where I got my MLS, residents were able to use the databases for something like $5/day. It really varies. You probably won't be able to get them to Interlibrary Loan stuff for you (that's something your public library would probably do when...

I agree that all research should be available for free or very low cost. I'm lucky that I teach part-time at the local university, so I have a magic login for access.
- Shannon Jiménez
Rochelle, check out www.deepdyve.com if you are seeking access to professional research articles for very low cost. At DeepDyve, you can find many of these articles from free open sources, and millions of others from authoritative sources such as clinical journals available to rent for as little as 99 cents. Good luck! - Jen

Today I accidentally let the kittehs onto the enclosed porch. Normally, this would not be a big deal, but since the weather has turned cold, it's where their catnip plant resides. They found the plant very quickly. Sophie's been good, but since I brought them back inside Plum has been trying to break through the door to the porch. Bad Kitteh!!!
I love that last one: OPEN.THE.DAMN.DOOR. NOW.
- holly
but she looks so cute and innocent you should let her at it :)
- Sir Shuping
"cute and innocent"? Did you notice that her fangs are showing in that second photo? This is my cat on drugs.
- Katy S
I love that last photo. So regal! I'm telling you!
- Anika
I know she is, really, I just see all of the silly things she does all of the time. Her fur is really amazingly plush and it's all silver-tipped, which accounts for why it can look different from picture to picture depending on the lighting.
- Katy S
I have considered growing catnip for Stormy, but she is already demented enough.
- Mellissa Jane
I'm definitely not bringing it inside. Once the porch is too cold, it gets to die. Growing it outside was fine, because I could control their intake. I don't think I could handle it if they had constant access to the 'nip.
- Katy S
Picture 2 is totally that of a cat going through "nip" withdrawal! LOVE!!!
- Helen Sventitsky
Three Days Later: This morning, after I crawled out of bed, I found both cats sitting in front of the door to the porch, mewing, and desperate for their morning dose of 'nip. This is sooooooooooooo not good.
- Katy S
Why haven't bookmarking services made any jumps forward in the last 5 years? BoingBoing and Del.ici.ous and Google Bookmarks (especially) and StumbleUpon haven't made a single damn upgrade in half a decade.
Matthew, what the Anti-Clique said is actually a good idea, I humply worked on some "recommendation systems" but nowadays social media seems more attracted by "popularity"

I'm seeing an order of magnatude increase in the use of \m/ on Friendfeed. I've thought for years that was ASCII for vulva, but it doesn't seem to be fitting as that in the contexts I'm seeing it.
You may be thinking of V for Vendetta, Lyo - which is awesome, but totally different.
- Pam
Most of the characters and situations are going to be different from the original series. Which is a pretty awesome view if you have the time.

as long as the general concept is the same it should be cool.

I really should not be paying attention to this as much as I am. I should wait for when I get to watch it. And then I think I may have to make a post like this as well. Yup, I think this is how I will review tv from now on. lol.

This isn't a review so much as watching it with the ff community

Right, but when I write my reviews in my blog I do a commentary like you're doing. That's my review. ;)

Not bad. I found it rushed and a little dull for the first half, but the last 10-15 minutes totally turned me around on it. Eager to see the next episode now.
- Eoghann Irving
I think the sleeper cell angle is a good modernization of the Nazi references in the original V.
- Eoghann Irving
it had a few of its emo moments, especially with respect to the annoying kid who will be joining the V's Hitler Youth, but we can hope that it may pay off one day. The larger conspiracy is interesting and has a lot of potential for storytelling and deus ex machinas

"Random" partners are chosen by the ALA Casual Sex Interest Group using a special method passed down by Hawthorne Dewey (Melvil's little-known sex-obsessed brother).
- Steve is older than ever
Does that method involve punch cards, mahogany drawers and a rub down with a Secretarial School diploma?
- Pete
*looks down* My drawers are not mahogany today. They're blue & stripey.

Yes, fags and dykes only at my branch (hiring prerequisite). I believe this to be true in most places. At any rate, it must be true, as I read it on the inner-net.

So how long does it take for Seesmic to sync the lists? I've had it for nearly an hour and the userlists - she does nothing.
- Matthew DeVries
Tweetdeck and Seesmic still turn out to be HUGE memory hogs on my machine. So much so that they become unusable after a few hours (using close to 300M of ram). So I'm almost strictly Brizzly.com now. But, so far none of those have list support yet (to actually answer your question). Seesmic is testing it, and Scoble reports that Brizzly will have it "soon"
- Craig Eddy
Am I doing this wrong? I can't get Seesmic to pull my Twitter lists....
- Matthew DeVries
i just use scrap pieces of paper, napkins (unused) whatever's lying around that will work
- Sir Shuping
I generally don't use real bookmarks or even slips of paper. Mostly I just remember vaguely where I left off. I did, however, use receipts and boarding passes as bookmarks this week. :)
- Laura H.
I think the last bookmark I used was a tab from a box of granola bars.
- Julian
I wish I could do multiple books at once, but I'm an obsessive reader - I start something and have to finish it. On personal copies, I dogear corners, on borrowed books, I use junk mail or receipts as placeholders. Nowhere near as classy as Iris with real bookmarks ;)
- The Archangel ωαřмaiden
Is collecting bookmarks weird? Books I'm reading usually have three or four bookmarks at the current page. When we go on vacation, I always make sure to bring enough bookmarks for the rest of the family to use as well.
- John Dupuis
John, we collect bookmarks from where we go on vacation! I'm rather fond of the leather ones from the UK. That said, I use post-it notes a lot because I'm always afraid of those nice bookmarks getting lost...
- Nikki D.
*goes to riffle through Steve's books in search of $100 bills*

Bookmarks from ALA, a metal one MFPOW (the "R" one) produced on its 25th anniversary, one from LYRASIS, four from Lulu, a special one with a yarn handle...and the ones I actually use, black plastic sheets that were formerly part of traveler's check cases. (Remember traveler's checks?)
- Walt Crawford
I've always been a slip-of-paper type myself, but recently I've somehow started wanting actual bookmarks. The trick is, I'm picky about them. The other trick is, I seem to be incapable of finishing books these days.
- lris
Actually, I bet Moo cards would make great bookmarks. What would be even greater is moo cards from my friends. If you have a moo card you think I'd like, I'd love to have it!
- lris
Err, I have hundreds. I do love getting ones from places we go on vacation. For everyday use, I mostly use piles of bookmarks that I'll get at conferences, etc, or promotional ones I'll pick up at bookstores. I tend not to actually buy too many, usually onley ones that really strike my fancy or that come from places I really love, like the AMNH, for example.
- John Dupuis
I use the nearest slip of paper handy. Then weeks later I wonder where my family tree of 16th century Danish/Brandburg royalty is because I really need it. Then months later I find it in a book I put down and forgot about.
- Deborah Fitchett
that's the best thing about public transit: bus transfers are the perfect bookmarks. And they're datestamped, so you can feel guilty about how long ago you abandoned that book.
- DJF
Post-its were originally used as bookmarks. They stick just enough so they don't fall out and you can make notes on them. Gretat for library books.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
Happy/sad story about bookmarks: My dad used to stick them in books when he gave them to me. I rediscovered one long after he'd died -- inscribed "Happy birthday Stephanie / Love, Dad" -- and used it for ages. Then by mistake, I returned a book back to the library ... and couldn't find that bookmark. It's somewhere lost in the Five Colleges. <sigh> I do love me some bookmarks, and collect them from vacation & favorite bookstores. I guess it's genetic.

no. Boyfriend stayed last night, and as of 5am Otto wont shut the fuck up. And shutting the door leaves him howling in the livingroom. I want to beat him to death, but instead have moved myself, my pillow, and some hot chocolate to the livingroom couch to distract him from the knowledge that we have company. Maybe I can give him to kendra....

Otto the basset hound is the love of my life. And boyfriend was fine with Otto sharing the bed with us - Otto just gets up early and barks if I dont get up with him. (Boy ignores, but I dont want neighbors to get annoyed) Otto & I are at truce stage, as he's currently sleeping on my feets.

It takes a while getting used to the fact that your kids can be very different people when you're not around. It only gets worse as they get older. Equally shocking is the realization that sometimes the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.

Mr. 7's father's 8th (?) grade English teacher: "Class, I'm growing annoyed." Mr. 7's father: "You're growing a WHAT?" The important question about Mr. 7's jokes is, are they funny?
- Judy Lawson
I remember a teacher chiding me for cracking jokes to my friends in class. "Keep them to yourself!" Me: "But if I keep them to myself, they're not funny!"
- josh neff, Fun Dip of FF
Liking this for Lawson's mom participation.
- Sarah G.
Once in school, at a teacher-parent conference, the teacher said I was "loquacious". I snortled. My mom looked at me and asked what was up. And with an eyeroll, I go, "Loquacious? Please...I'm BLACK."

Manslaughter: unintentional killing (i.e., you run someone over with your car accidentally and they die). Second-degree murder: intentional killing, but without premeditation (i.e., you get angry and kill someone, but don't plan it out in advance). First-degree murder: pre-meditated murder (i.e., you plan out how you're going to kill someone and then carry out the plan). Do we want to ask what happened?
