Today's bailout FAIL = a resounding victory for the People and for a free market. Short term pain will bring long term gain.
Breadlines are coming and I'll personally blame people like you. Thanks! You just turned off the credit tap. That sounds wonderful on paper, but now people with excellent credit won't be able to buy cars, houses, or businesses on credit. What happens then? Poor people get laid off by the millions. Congrats, you are celebrating on the backs of the working suckers who will now get laid off. - Robert Scoble
Agreed. - David Risley
I'm not buying into depression fear. Glad to see this fail as it stands. Hoping to see the government continue to help smooth the market via negotiated buyouts. See WaMu and Wachovia. And Wells Fargo is still in a buying mood too. - AJ Kohn
2nd. It's going to be ugly and painful, but its looking more and more unlikely that even 700B would be enough to stop the train we're all on. - Jim Goldstein
Here in the UK, a second bank has just been nationalised. We seem hell bent on privatising profits and socialising debt. Sad - PaulJohnson
i hate to use the analogy but a chainsaw was used where a scalpel was needed - adolfo foronda
The bailout bill would not have been a good idea. - Michael Forian
@Robert Scoble: You sound like Bush. - Eric P
Gregory, I think you're right. A lot of Americans were dead against this bailout, and the politicians--even a good many who thought it was a good idea--didn't want to vote for it. - Steve Lowe
You are a dunce. - S Adler from twhirl
The bailout seems unfair, but I don't feel qualified to know whether or not it is good or bad, in general, for it to have failed. I do feel worried, though. - felix
Eric: i sat down with some smart economists last week who told me what's going on. Whatever. The market agrees with me. So, let's meet in six months and see the damage. I hope I still have a job. If not, I'm coming over and sleeping on your couch, OK? - Robert Scoble
I don't think--at least I hope--it won't be as bad as the worst estimates, but given that the "free market" (which isn't and has never been free) has generally screwed ordinary folks since Adam Smith, I think the only people who really want to see this fail are well-off Social Darwinists with more money than morals. - Steve Lowe
I have no business commenting on this. That is, of course, an excuse to comment here. I agree with Scoble. What the US needs is tighter controls & better oversight of its lenders & investors. A bailout would've given the government the right to be the controlling or overseeing body with less harm. - Vijay
Back to Cash Economy. - Uncle CW™
Too bad this won't be a short term pain if things keep going the way they are. We are quickly heading towards our bank system failing and if that happens, not only will our country head into another depression but many other countries around the world will also plunge into economic hell. - Mathew™ one of a kind
I greatly doubt that banks will not do loans anymore, for that is the only way that banks make money. Now, granted, the banks are not going to be giving them out like they are candy on Halloween to ever ghoul and goblin that comes to the door, but they are still going to give out loans. The general public when they want a loan will have to show that they can afford the loan over the period of the loan itself, and that they have a real need for it. - Wizetux
"The market" is composed of the same people who created this mess, who are now selling off because they're not getting $700 billion of taxpayer money to line their pockets with. At this point I have no reason to trust any of the people talking doom and gloom. This is WMD's all over again. - Eric P
I take it Robert would have preferred I celebrate on the broken backs of the responsible American taxpayer? And Robert, you're not the only one who speaks with "smart economists" - and they don't all agree with you. Many of them think a functioning market requires that bad bets are punished. And where have you been on this issue? - Anthony Citrano
There needs to be some money invested back into the market otherwise we are going to see the next great depression. There will be no lending even for those with perfect credit. Unless they pass some sort of package, you will see the hugest FAIL yet! - David Ward
Anthony: well, we're being punished all right. Oh, well. Major shit is coming, I'm off to the store to buy some supplies. - Robert Scoble
Scobleizer, you don't have a y2k end of the world supply left over? - Simon May
Anthony: The pain will be far from short term unless some form of this bill is passed. They need to get back in their and come to an agreement. - David Ward
Robert, since you've decided to personalize this by blaming people like me, I didn't hear you using your soapbox to discourage the orgy of borrowing and spending your fellow citizens went on over the past seven years to warn them of calamity if it continued - (quite the opposite.) On the other hand, I have done so loudly, clearly and consistently - long suggesting Americans wake up and take some hard looks in the mirror. So, I'll blame people like you for any disaster that follows. - Anthony Citrano
Anthony: OK, that's fair. So, now that the blame is out of the way, what we gonna do? Just watch the whole country stop? Or, you gonna join with me to come up with solutions? Work the problem as it exists today, let's get away from the blame. - Robert Scoble
crazy times in Charlotte NC.. Wachovia is done.. there's no gas in the city.. not much of a victory for the people here - Travis Parsons
@Robert: *now* you want to get away from the blame? @David: that is NOT going to happen. I have talked with quite a few people on the Hill today. Let's all stop wishing and start realizing that you cannot legislate against gravity. Even if they *do* pass something, it's going to be window dressing / political cover for Election Day and will not make a palpable difference to the market. The problem we face is more than 40 times the size of the entire US GDP. So: </fun>. - Anthony Citrano
With you there Robert. Blame gets us nothing; what can we do to solve this - Aaron Krug
@Paul - "privatising profits and socialising debt." wow. that sums it up. - jeneane sessum
Amazing how "only bailout for exactly $700B -- or bust" are the only two options. Seriously? No other plans, options, or proposals to deal with the mess? We're playing right into their hands. - Ambar Pansari
The point is, the government is now there to do things like this. This is a democracy, is it not??? If the government passes a bailout, that goes against democracy. It is socialism. If they want to do it, then at least call a spade a spade. This country is moving further and further away from democracy, and the citizens accept it under the guise of safety and security. - Andru Edwards
So now that government intervention helped steamroll this situation, the solution is more government intervention at our expense? I agree w/your tweet 100 percent. - Bryan Saxton
@Ambar: even the full $700B is just spitting in the ocean. We have a $600 TRillion derivatives problem that is just beginning to come unraveled. Future versions of this bill won't matter, except to those seeking reelection. - Anthony Citrano
@Andru: I have no problem with sensible regulation - I am not a rabid free marketeer - but I do not believe the taxpayer should be forced to retroactively rescue people from bad gambles. It's unfair and immoral. Hard working Americans who made sensible decisions during aforesaid orgy should not be compelled by law to pay the bill. - Anthony Citrano
@Robert: as to "joining you" for "solutions" - I have been suggesting them publicly and privately for years. Unfortunately one part of the solution is the pain phase - which we are just entering - and it will be severe. Yes, we must ensure a safety net for those who will be truly derailed by this. To anyone serious about organizing public policy solutions to this, my email door is always open, because it goes well beyond a FriendFeed comment box. But I won't be holding my breath. - Anthony Citrano
I'm with Scoble on this one. It's understandable that the average taxpayer is enraged by this bailout. And yes, many financial institutions deserve to fail. Problem is, the innocent will suffer more than the guilty if congress just lets this play out with no intervention. - Howard Keziah
Howard - please at very least read what I wrote here. If you're ambitious, read what I (and many others way smarter than me) have written on it over the years. Do you really, really think Congress can fix this? Have you done the math? You know the problem is more than ten times the entire GDP of Planet Earth, right? - Anthony Citrano
Anthony - what is the worst-case scenario here, in your opinion? - Sean McBride
@Sean: the *worst* case (but NOT the most likely) is a collapse of the global finance house of cards, death of the dollar and fiat currencies, and a return to barter and intrinsics; absolute obliteration of American suburbia; epic global depression. [For a perspective on some of this, read James Howard Kunstler (someone who has been way ahead of the curve on these issues).] Tectonic... more... - Anthony Citrano
Again: where were most of you as this was unfolding over the past seven years? Oh, I remember: navel-gazing and encouraging the masses to buy the latest shiny object with their MasterCards, all while ignoring or deriding those of us who dared suggest we examine our way of life. Now you want us to pick up the tab. Sorry guys, but the faux-populist lectures - especially from this crowd - are a little hard to take. - Anthony Citrano
Well, I came onto this one way late, but it sure was fun reading it, even without nested comments. - Rick Powell

"John McCain is aware of the Internet." Defense of McCain on stage at #pdf2008 in argument about whether candidate needs to use a computer.
that just made me spit my coffee - Erin @queenofspain
I'm not a McCain supporter (by a long shot), but... I don't need to play the violin or cello to understand music. - Kirk Kittell
That is probably one of the lamest answers of all time - I am aware of Congress and the Presdential Election coming up - doesn't mean I know it or am compotent to run for office... - Tony from twhirl
he's only aware of it? - Jennifer Van Grove from twhirl
@Jennifer: He overheard former Senator Gore mumble about his "invention" in the Congress hallways, surely - Kirk Kittell
he has said he does not use a compute - Erin @queenofspain
is he "aware" that there was a twitter presenditial debate with someone else representing him??? - Jennifer Van Grove from twhirl
you know who doesn't know how to use a computer? My grandma. And I don't want her running the country either. - jason burton
Jimmy Carter could operate a nuclear submarine, but that didn't help us when Iran took the hostages. - Ontario Emperor
Presidents need to understand the Internet the way they understand our highway system, freedoms of speech and assembly, what NASA does, why the CDC needs a bigger budget, and how much of his campaign site operations is offshored to Mumbai... - Phil Wolff from Alert Thingy
I think just the fact someone has to SAY 'John McCain is aware of the Internet' is frankly the problem here - Erin @queenofspain
John McCain is probably the last candidate of his generation to run for President. - Dave Winer
you know, I'm "aware" of foreign policy and budgeting. doesn't mean i know how to run the damn country - Jeremy Toeman
who said it? - Bill Seitz
I'm "aware" of open heart surgery. Do you want me operating on you? - Mike Doeff
I guess that means that he knows there's something called the "Internet". That's almost as good as the head of german ministry of justice answering "Browser? What was a browser just now?" who still prepares laws pertaining to users of said Internet. - Andre Heinrichs
The problem with McCain's statement is that it reveals a lack of intellectual curiosity about strategic developments in the world that are affecting us all. He seems to be out of touch with what is going on in the real world, and becoming more out of touch with each passing day. This situation is not going to improve -- he is in a state of mental decline. Without puppeteers at his elbow, like Joseph Lieberman, he would be completely adrift. - Sean McBride
Is the Obama Girl speaking at this conference? I'd like her to do a video with John McCain like the one she did with HRC. http://www.youtube.com/watch... - Dave Winer
Turn it around: Is _the Internet_ aware of John McCain? Just so happens I interviewed _the Internet_ the other day and when asked the pointed question: "Many claim you _are aware_ of John McCain, but don't think he's relevant?", it mustered its best Cheney impression and said, "So?" - Micah Wittman
Perhaps Mr. Bush could show him the Google? - Philipp Lenssen
George W. was also just "aware" of newspapers, and you see where that got us. As for the Internet, remember his famous quote about the "Internets" : "Information is moving -- you know, nightly news is one way, of course, but it's also moving through the blogosphere and through the Internets." --George W. Bush, Washington, D.C., May 2, 2007 - Stephan Osmont
I think bush is more aware of the internet then McCain. Afterall he knew you shouldn't keep incriminating emails laying around. - Nelson de Witt from twhirl
John McCain. Because who do you want answering the telegraph at 3 A.M.? - Karim
It's very clear that this election is about the 20th century (McCain) versus the 21st century. The US may just not be ready for the future. Which will be really sad. - Chrimmus Tad from fftogo
Karim, LOL! Is McCain also aware of the semantic web? - Bill Sodeman from twhirl
This makes sense considering his comments on net-neutrality. Troubling though across the board, given that there are so many issues still very much on the table. - jcunwired
The key issue IMO is that the Internet is one of the key drivers that is transforming the economy. And if you don't "get" that, then you won't understand how we need to change how the gov't interacts with the economy. New leadership should "get" alternative energy, the Internet, biotech and other key transformational technologies. That way, we can spearhead efforts (funding, education, etc) to lead in those areas. It's not enough to simply be aware they exist. - Barry Graubart from twhirl
lol. The definition of non-sequitir is to couple the word 'awareness' and McCain. - S Adler
It was Mark Soohoo, who works on John McCain's campaign. - Robert Scoble
That must explain why he doesn't know what a blogger is - OH WAIT he has been holding regular conference calls with bloggers for over a year now. to @jasonburton's point - last time I checked the president does not run the internet so what exactly about that example makes sense? Should we now make computer literacy a prerequisite for serving as an elected official? Trust me - I wish he wouldn't have said it but until someone can prove to me that not being tech savvy is a prerequisite for leadership... - Marco(aureliusmaximus)
@Kirk Kittell - That's the wrong comparison. What you said (playing violin necessary to understand music) would mean that he's asked to be a programmer to understand technology. No, it's enough to use it - much like I demand somebody to like to listen the music they say they understand. So as long as he's not actually used the internet, a word processor and simple stuff like that, I think it's a save assumption that he doesn't understand anything. Well, he doesn't understand economy too, by his own account. - sebmos
American's generates more Internet related innovation particularly in content generation, and social media but there are many other countries leading in eGov services. Looks like McCain won't be helping you guys out with the digitisation of your Gov services anytime soon. - Roger Kondrat
Marco - would tech savvy requirement in this day and age be such a bad thing? - jason burton
@jason absolutely not (although "requirement" may be a bit extreme) - just trying to point out that alot of the comments are illogical and unnecessarily extreme. I would love it if McCain was a mobile computing, FriendFeeding maniac but someone can be a good President without having to be tech savvy. (I say that knowing full well that McCain's lack of tech capabilities is far from the only problem most people on this thread have with McCain.) - Marco(aureliusmaximus)
@sebmos - Yeah, I might be off a bit (though in your example, I'd compare the programmer to the music composer, but I get you). The point I'm really getting as is that I don't hold this against him at all. He doesn't need to understand the technology or use a computer to be President -- as long as he is the best guy to lead the nation and is open to appointing the right people to positions that need those skills. I might have voted for him in 2000, but not this year; he's not a Luddite, perhaps, but close. - Kirk Kittell
McCain isn't the President for me. I'm looking for a president that understands how to get in touch with my generation, and the internet is my primary source of information. If McCain doesn't use a computer and can't tap into that stream of info, he's going to have a hard time understanding what I want and how to give it to me. I'm not faulting him for his computer illiteracy, I just know that unless you use the same general set of tools that I use, we're going to be out of sync. - Nick Malaguti
Presidents need a deep understanding of Government, International relations and defense strategy. They need to have experience working with other government members. They need to have a lot of skills.... whether or not they know how to follow me on a Twitter account is so far down the list it is microscopic. - Soulhuntre
The next president will have to deal with an issue more important than net neutrality - oil. Does McCain know how to change the oil in his car? Does Obama? Barr? McKinney? Nader? (Oh, Nader probably rides a bicycle.) - Ontario Emperor from fftogo
The fact that McCain graduated near the bottom of his class at Annapolis, is nearly as inarticulate and incoherent as George W. Bush, and is under the thumb of the same neoconservatives who engineered the worst foreign policy disaster in American history (the Iraq War), is probably more significant than the fact that McCain hasn't demonstrated the slightest intellectual interest in a... more... - Sean McBride
Wow, I can't believe that a candidate would lack computer skills some 20 years after they've been in use. I suppose he's had secretaries, law clerks and aids his entire professional life so he didn't *need* to use a computer per se. This is astounding to me and clearly seems untenable for a Presidential candidate today. - Susan Beebe

Twitter should have a "Downtime Art Contest" kind of like Threadless. Every time they go down, users that aren't twittering should draw what they think should be the "Twitter is down" picture and post it on Flickr. Everyone can vote on the favorite and Twitter could use it the next time they go down. It would be win-win. Twitter users would be kept busy and would just move the community over to Flickr for a period of time. Twitter builds good will by using the picture and they don't lose users to FF. - Cathleen Rittereiser
Soldier A: It could grip it by the tail! Soldier B: It's not a question of where he grips it, it's a simple question of weight ratios. A five ounce bird could not carry a 100-ton whale. A: Wait a minute, supposing eight swallows carried it together? B: No, they'd have to have it in a net. A: Well, simple! They'd just hold it in their beaks. B: What, held under the maxilla, below the nares? A: Well, why not...? [King Arthur rides off] - Karim

Bloglines Continues to Lead Google Reader - http://www.bloglines.com/about...
Hmmm, Bloglines never shows up in my referrer logs while Google Reader usually is near the top of my logs. - Robert Scoble

thats because you are special and likely move in a circle that is not at bloglines :-) - Richard Binhammer
Haven't used Bloglines in years. - Ontario Emperor
I've never used Bloglines, but the level of AJAX on Google Reader and the length of a "visit" may skew the numbers a bit. The ability to use GR offline may also contribute to number skewing. - lilbyrdie
Unfortunately, the mobile version of Bloglines is much better than Google Reader. I wish that Google Reader was as good as Bloglines on my iPhone. I would switch in a second. - Michael Carter
Weird! Who knew it was still so popular? - Sarah Perez
I don't believe that's correct. It doesn't match anything I've seen either from talking to people, or through referrals to the blog. Google Reader is much, much higher. - Louis Gray

the lack of integration between bloglines and FF is a bummer... if only bloglines posted "keep new" items to here the way that google reader allows us to share items... - Chris Hollander
I've always preferred Bloglines b/c I've found it easier to use and less cluttered. But I also started out with it a long time ago before discovering Google Reader. When I need to change things, it's incredibly simple. And again, the general lack of clutter is a big thing for me. -
I used to like Bloglines but the current Google Reader kicks its butt. But maybe GR only appeals to power users. - George Donnelly
I'm a Google Reader zealot. GReader on the iPod Touch kicks some serious backplane. - Christopher Penn from Alert Thingy
define power user? I'm tracking close to 300 feeds in bloglines. The main thing that keeps me tied to bloglines is the folder management functionality... i'm not crazy about the tagging metaphor that i've seen other readers use, and last time i tried to import into google reader, it messed everything up. - Chris Hollander
I think Google Reader will overtake Bloglines in the very near future... - S Adler from twhirl
@ChrisHollander, I had around 200 in bloglines and needed the folder stuff. Now with sharing and some other goodness, I think google reader is finally better. The import used to suck, but it generated folders/tags equivalent to my bloglines folders this time. I just switched about two weeks ago. - Rob Diana
First of all, Alexa has its own issues. Second, I've discovered Google Reader in just the last week (I know... I'm very late to the game) after finding Bloglines pathetic when it came to being up-to-date ... and I don't think I'm ever going to use Bloglines or the other rss reader I utilize again... - Chris Reed
Unexpected. My subscriber figures show that Google Reader is by far the no.1 feed reader that readers use to read my blog, Bloglines is second... followed by Netvibes and the rest... - Maki
That's an interesting take on the data too since Reader has caught up so much with it over the past year. It's almost like, "look at us while we're #1 (before we aren't very soon)" - MG Siegler
recently moved from bloglines to google reader - is a much better user experience IMO! - Jeroen De Miranda
I just made the plunge... I'm taking this as an opportunity to clean out my feeds, and migrate most of my saved items in bloglines to either shared google items or delicious posts (thus the flood of delicious activity...) - Chris Hollander
I've chucked some tech stuff at gReader and use it most days but it is still an ajaxy bucket of fail ... Horrid pagedown waits, embeded video freakouts, and general slowness. Bloglines slices and dices my glut of feeds with glee. - Ashton

Like any social networking technology, it is driven by the network. If you have no friends on it, it has no value.
