My blog's new design is up: http://scobleizer.com -- more to come soon as I have more fun with my blog again now that it's hosted on a Rackspace server. Thank you to Vid Luther at Rackspace for helping me get it up and running.
- Robert Scoble
lovely Robert but not very unique. I just mean, isn't it based on a fairly popular wordpress theme?
- Zee.
Zee: yes, it is. It's the Thesis theme, which is very nice. Great SEO, great foundation. I will be adding more personality to it over time.
- Robert Scoble
I like it Robert. Simple yet elegant. :) I recomend trying out the wptouch plugin for a mobile-friendly layout.
- Daynah
Surprised you went with Thesis. I was beginning to think it was too old school now that everyone is using it.
- Dickie Maxx
I don't want it to be unique right now. I wanted to tear it back down to the basics. Plus, most people read me in an RSS reader anyway so the design doesn't matter that much (or you'll see my posts here on friendfeed or Twitter or Facebook and then you just want to be able to read the damn thing when you get there.
- Robert Scoble
It's very plain but professional, it makes you focus on the content more than anything else.
- Ahmed
Dickie: it works, which is why everyone is using it.
- Robert Scoble
i love the thesis theme, dont get me wrong but i just think someone of your stature should have something custom built or heavily modified to suit you. But that's just me
- Zee.
You sometimes produces some great matter worth reading it :) I like Robert too ;)
- Mohammad Abdurraafay
Zee: what, the friendfeed component isn't enough custom? Heheh.
- Robert Scoble
when i have some time, i'm going to put together a design for ya i reckon. Because although you're not a startup, you do deserve your own scobleized design...something that no one else has
- Zee.
Zee: I'm open to it. Now that I understand what's going on in all the pieces I'm more open to playing around.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: I like the general concept but I'd like to see a dark frame around the page, instead of the whitish one you tossed in. Second thing I'd use, is the "read-more" break that sends readers into the post instead of reading the entire article in the front page. IMO it's annoying to have such a long Home page.
- Nir Ben Yona
its very simple..yet very readable. I like it :)
- Saad Kamal
but don't get me wrong, i love the thesis theme - but i just think, as it is and considering who you are, you need something more unique
- Zee.
Hey, I love the whitespaces....that's what makes me read blogs....
- Manu Srikumar
Nir: see, that's where I disagree. Most of my readers come from Google Reader, twitter, friendfeed, or later, from search engines like Google. If you are coming there to read a single article you don't want to have to click through. I +HATE+ that about TechCrunch. I assumed they did it to get more page views. I don't care about page views.
- Robert Scoble
It works for what it does: "Inform, Educate and Markets Your Passion" dont worry about design, you can freak it out later on with a flashy design or light colors. Thesis is very flexible, easy and you can create some serious new layout in time. I read you via Google Reader, so most time, I never to blog site anyways, keep experimenting, Tiger Woods broke his great swing to create a new one too, congrats
- Jonathan Fleming
Zee: Interesting I would have thought the other way, because who he is that Robert doesnt nee something flashy. Me on the other hand I need something to wow people.
- Dickie Maxx
Clean design. Needs a mobile or iPhone viewing option. Also wondered if too many posts showing on frontpage (this might be a consequence if accessing through an iPhone).
Nice and simple. But it must be way past your bed time. Get some sleep
- Tim Child
Hi Robert, i think it works for what you want it for, all your posts and all your updates and social spaces ... i think it works. The only thing i would say is that the social spaces section should fit inside the themes top lines. :)
- clairestokoe
By the way, if you didn't catch the Real Time Search panel discussion I linked to there, you should watch that. Very interesting stuff is cooking in that field.
- Robert Scoble
"by ADMIN", Robert? And the other articles say 'by on'! Aren't you supposed to be a tech guru? ;)
- Shéa Bennett
I like the clean look, but the page is LOOOOOONG and takes a while to load. Maybe a prolific (micro-)blogger like you should go with more of a "newspaper" (or is it "magazine"?) layout (a là Feedly) that highlights articles and topics better.
- Grey Drane
Shea: oh, crap. I forgot to log in as myself. Sigh.
- Robert Scoble
Grey: most of my posts aren't so long as this one.
- Robert Scoble
No, but the page shows a whole long list of full-text posts.
- Grey Drane
Mature, newspaperish, classic, back to basics. I do like your previous theme more; the one with you and the camera at the top.
- Tomi Itkonen
Grey: I just changed it to only display three posts. Thanks.
- Robert Scoble
Personally, I don't like lime green (any citrus colours) with that much white. Layout-wise, I like wider rather than narrow. Otherwise, fine. And the link in this post's title can't be found - http://scobleizer.com/2009...
- Mark H
Tomi: I'm going to introduce another banner photo. I will have Guy Kawaski shoot one of me on the Nimitz.
- Robert Scoble
Yeah, it loads fast enough for me but excerpts are usually preferable to full articles on the front page. They should be long enough to get your interested in seeing how it finishes, but loads of front-page text can be off-putting.
- Shéa Bennett
I'd love to see a live webcam of your browser in the right side - showing how you flip through content as you search for interesting ideas, play on FF, etc
- LPH™ and his dog P™
I'm still seeing 10 full-length articles on the front page (not three).
- Shéa Bennett
Robert: you got me right, I was referring to TC style, but I do hear ya on this one. That said, you should consider customizing the Thesis, I really liked the previous header [Edit: just noticed you're going to replace the banner photo after all].
- Nir Ben Yona
Shea: it should be three now, sorry. Mark, what link can't be found? It works here. Nir: I will bring back a header soon.
- Robert Scoble
Looks simple and readable. But i read your blog posts in a rss reader
- Shuuro
Robert: It's the link in your original post - "Exploring the 2010 web" - I just get "Page not found" and "Sorry, no posts matched your criteria..."
- Mark H
Clean, streamlined, classic. With utmost respect to Shea, I prefer full articles on blogs with one primary author. I'm there to read a person's perspectives, not browse like a news service. The "by" is reading Admin, which I'd change to Robert...a little more personal. :) Other than that I like the simplicity. Oh, and also like the '2010 Web' theme. Indicates forward thinking without seeming too bandwagon-y
- AllisonWagda
Allison: I just changed that, should be working its way through the system now.
- Robert Scoble
Allison, you don't think a lot of text can be off-putting, particularly if the first (lead) article is of no interest, and you have to wade down a lot of text/paragraphs to find the next one? I think the excerpt should deliver the hook, and you click through to read more, personally. Each to their own, I guess. :)
- Shéa Bennett
Noticed you're posting as "Admin" -- should change that. Otherwise, looking great!
- Christopher Golda
Great, then no complaints from here (at least from my 3 a.m. blurry eyes)
- AllisonWagda
Robert, weird indeed. Tried with three browsers (and IE7 didn't like that error page at all - theme not working right there) and they all report the same. Maybe a transparent proxy somewhere along my route to your site.
- Mark H
I wish the friendfeed Widget wrapped comments better and also showed my likes and comments on other people's posts.
- Robert Scoble
Oh, and I got rid of the green photo. Hope that makes someone happy. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Shea, you're totally right, It can be off-putting - especially if you're looking to browse headlines and have to scroll endlessly. Maybe my opinion depends on how often he expects to blog. If more than 2 per day, I could be swayed to your side. If 1-2 per day, I'd rather have it served straight than have to click through to read the rest :)
- AllisonWagda
nice clean design but right hand column would look even better if everything was the same width
- Anita Hunt
Allison: I would expect to be one to five times a day, with bias toward one post a day.
- Robert Scoble
The Facebook Connect feature by Sociable is a neat idea. I might have to look into that.
- Shéa Bennett
I'll try to fix the widths in the morning.
- Robert Scoble
I found it nice but a bit generic for u. Can I still push for an hand of a light gray on the background? Your profile pic, top right could be more "american". About this latter some Twitter background could inspire :-)
- Daniele Beta
Robert: It's possible to get those FF comments in the widget to wrap (as they do with the "likes") -- look at the CSS for .friendfeed.widget .feed .entry .comment
- Christopher Golda
Christopher: hmm, I gotta play with the CSS more. I tried playing around with it and couldn't get it to wrap right, but must not have nailed it.
- Robert Scoble
Then my vote, FWIW, is for keeping the continuous posts
- AllisonWagda
Robert: You have to "overwrite" FriendFeed's CSS for that selector -- specifically the white-space: nowrap. Hope that helps
- Christopher Golda
Displaying three to five posts is a good compromise.
- Nir Ben Yona
there's more about you than the stuff in the sidebar, your tv stuff, bldg 43 stuff, wikipedia link, etc. am not sure where is the best place to put all that
- Tweet Feeds
Tweet: yeah, I'll keep tweaking it and making it simpler/nicer. Thanks to you and everyone for all the feedback!
- Robert Scoble
how do you get the disqus comments to show up on FF?
- Tweet Feeds
The fact that "It's all you" (minus "your tv stuff, bldg 43 stuff, wikipedia link, etc." as noted above) without bells and whistles is a breath of fresh air in a world where we're marketed to death by brands comnsuming every inch of space. But isn't web simplicity so 1994? (I jest.)
- Kim
Kim: hey, they had SOME good ideas back in 1994. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Tweet: Disqus is one of the services that friendfeed supports. You've got to add the service to your profile. Click "add/edit" on top of your page.
- Robert Scoble
A rock solid header banner and a custom color detail (such as a border) is all you need to add to Thesis. Keep it white. Way to go!
- E-Advocate Network
Wait have you not gotten to sleep yet Robert?
- Mark Essel
Mark: right, I'm off to bed now. See ya!
- Robert Scoble
Time for me to track down those widgets, too bad you can't have mini interactive friendfeed windows on your blog
- Mark Essel
Robert: quick fix for "Admin" posts in Wordpress: Add New User: Robert, full admin rights, logout, login as Robert, Delete User: Admin, assign all posts to user Robert, done. Buy @AMcDermott beer.
- Alastair McDermott
Alastair: I just renamed the Admin account to Robert Scoble. Seems to have worked. Did I miss one?
- Robert Scoble
Robert: that's another way to do it - your userid is still admin, my way would have removed that (security by almost zero obscurity) ;)
- Alastair McDermott
I like the simplicity; white space is good. Now you need to help the rest of us by, say, turn features such as your FriendFeed setup into WordPress plugins. And I fully agree on the choice of Thesis for a theme; great flexibility.
- Jim Courtney
Note to self, switching blog will cost me a night of sleep someday
- Mark Essel
Mark: switching to a self-hosted blog running on a good framework is a good investment of time; future proofing yourself
- Alastair McDermott
I've been thinking about using the Thesis theme and growing up my blog from there. I like it! About Rackspace, I probably wouldn't need it for something as small as me eh?! I've been considering it, but like I've mentioned, I'm not that big! =) Nice setup.
- Elijah Nicolas
You say that building the 2010 web is still too hard for average folks, but what about turn-key "bundles" like ning?
- Dr. Headcrash
Wordpress is written in PHP, not Python ;-)
- Jesse Stay
Love Thesis. Great theme, great SEO. VERY customizable. Can't wait to see what you do with it.
- Bob Linger
Sup Scoble, the theme you've choosed looks a lot like the one i use in my blog, simple, clean and functional. I liked it. By the way, i see you're using the friendfeed widget. A few months ago i've coded for myself a wp plugin that connects to ff api and build a widget from your feed much like that one, with the advantage that's SEO friendly, easier to customize the style and with more...
- Diego Sana
I thought Disqus would integrate with FriendFeed but perhaps not? There are 90+ comments in here on FriendFeed and only 30 comments in Disqus on the blog? Shouldn't Disqus synchronize both the blog and the FriendFeed thread?
- Charbax
Charbax: good point. I need to figure out how to do that. I think Disqus only integrates them if you've added Disqus to your friendfeed account.
- Robert Scoble
Quiet, clean, subtle design, not sure it's you, but let us get used to it :)
- Michael Metz
mimetz: it's not very personalized, but it does work great on an iPhone! :-)
- Robert Scoble
The new design is clean and "textual". Nice!
- Rick Cogley
The only think I don't like in your new blog look is the Google Friend Connect bar in the bottom.
- Miguel Caetano
I have a 1024 x 768 screen. The blog appears to be set up for a widescreen display. If I zoom out to where it fits on the screen horizontally, the text is too small to read. Sites that require that I either scroll horizontally to read, or adjust both the page zoom and the text zoom separately I often pass on by.
- Chuck Baggett
i don't even remember i think it was planet something or i dunno something like that no wait i don't know why i'm thinking earlyalert.com i don't know i'm probably wrong lol
- Cardeen Martinez
crikey, i've never even heard of some of these...
- Zee.
1st public internet email was via easy.com ... my own domain via ISP I started in 1993. 1st corporate email was 1978 ish internal on our private global DECNET, connected to public Internet in about 1984.
- Don Strickland
A shell account in '92, I forget with who. Was BBS'ing for years before that, and they sort of had email.
- Bob Morris (polizeros)
mail.com. Alternative back than was only hotmail (I think, can't remember about yahoo) which totally sucked. I think mail.com is extinct now, but they used to have multiple domains. And I had about 5 different accounts. 4, 5, or 6MB, can't really remember exactly. Wow, the days... This is one example (of many) where I'm very happy we are where we are today.
- Vlad Bobleanta
I can't remember. Possibly Yahoo, but I think Yahoo may have come later...
- Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
Compuserve, then "Niftyserve" the licensee of Compuserve here in Japan. We have it so good now!
- Rick Cogley
Hotmail, way back in 1998 (although before that I had an ISP email through Frontier)
- Brandon Mendelson
Prodigy in 1991, followed shortly thereafter by AOL 1.0 for the Mac, then Compuserve. And finally a POP internet dialup with Chicago's Interaccess in about 1992 after getting Adam Engst's Internet starter kit book that came with a copy of the Mac/TCP control panel on a 3 1/2" floppy.
- Adam Turetzky
My first was at work. heamin@sunshine.vab.unisysgsg.com -- no joke. Then I had an alumna account with Virginia Wesleyan, and then I think I picked up a yahoo account. My first web site was on geocities, and it was so kewl for its time, too. :-)
- Ladybug Heather
Technically, my first email address was on an internal mail service for a large corporation back in 1991, but it was possible to email other people on the internet with a byzantine series of pipes, slashes, gateways and hostnames. My first personal email on the internet proper was with a regional dialup service called pics.com in 1992.
- dthree
I had brlewis@mit.edu in 1986 way before there ever was such a thing as spam. Now there's probably not a single spammer's list out there that doesn't have that address. I still log in there occasionally.
- Bruce Lewis
A tiny, local ISP here in Vermont call Kingdom Connection. I was one of the first 25 subscribers I think, and I still have my original e-mail address. Scary.
- Bob M. Montgomery
Prodigy. Then AOL. Then Berkeley.edu followed by Earthlink.net, Home.com, ATTBI.com, and then Mac.com. (Also in there, GMail, Excite, Netscape, and work accounts, etc.)
- Louis Gray
Hotmail - Sometime in 1997 I think. My first email account for work was in 1998.
- David Yarnell
AOL. I was so excited to get Hotmail because at the time, it was cooler than AOL. Heh. Then Yahoo and now Gmail. And that's it, not counting work/school accounts.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Mine was AOL over my 2400 baud modem.
- Allen Blair
<student id>@<sydney university undergrad domain), then something at extro.com.au which was the Sydney University dial up provider then good ol iname.com. I thought that would be my non service provider bound email address, till they decided to charge for it. Thank god for gmail.
- Tom Horn
Actually, my first email was with MCI*Mail. NOT internet email. The next one was Compuserve. Still not internet. My first internet account was on a server at my employer in Austin.
- Glen Campbell, B.A.
My math prof gave me an account on a NeXT box.
- Hiro Asari
ISP provider, bellsouth.net, I then upgraded to Hotmail. lol
- Sharon McPherson
Back in Romania, when the whole Internet thing was just showing up there (1993?), a VAX/VMS machine (roearn.ici.ac.ro, also ROEARN on Bitnet)
- Tudor Bosman
Prodigy. Before that I was on BBS which was my first chatroom, a lot of people trying to log into a room that would only fit 8. Good times.
- zephyrlily
Well my first email was hotmail in like 2004, but before that, our family account was yahoo which was around 94/95 (which i think it was better UI then vs today) now i use gmail for everything!
- Bryce Campbell
The University of Leeds in 1997, closely followed by Yahoo Mail in the same week. I still have the Yahoo account but only use it to log into Flickr.
- Martin Bryant
Compuserve...over and over again with those 30 day trials :)
- Mark Krynsky
On the WWW it was msn.com but I was on BBS before then and the address was something like portofcall.net
- Kol Tregaskes
Back at my college (ISU) in the early 90's. Used Pine on a Unix server.
- Ward Seward
Hotmail for me too. Amazing that it's still so popular
- Gee Ranasinha
Two at same time, utk.edu for work and hotmail for personal, I actually still use that hotmail acct.
- Brytne
from Nambu
Why is everyone hating on Hotmail? Oh yeah, I know, it's cool to bash MS. It was and is one of the better webmails out there. My first was yahoo.co.uk
- Matt Hall
not for sure but i am guessing hotmail maybe yahoo
- (jeff)isageek
Luukku, it's finnish email service. Not really good...
- Kristian Salonen
AOL for sure -- had one under my parents' account, probably early to mid 90s. Signed up for Hotmail in 1997 when I was in college (still have that account, though I really never use it). Of course, I had a standard-issue "geneseo.edu" college account starting in 1996 when I started college.
- mark
Actually, I lie, cmich.edu was my second - some funky FidoNet address leading to a BBS was the first.
- l.m.orchard
from twhirl
erols out of Maryland then hotmail then gmail with an occasional visit to yahoo mail cause they made me have a yahoo mail account for yahoo IM and other Yahoo properties (flickr).
- Dan Morrill AKA Techwag
Compuserve, then Demon and well.com
- Fraser Smith
It was "pobox.sk" <- clever name for an email for that time :) abandoded them after some other guys has offered pop3 for free. History long gone.
- Dušan Šimonovič
OMG am I as old as Leo Laporte? LOL no, but I had an email account at Rutgers Univ that was numbers (I don't remember what it was though) & then Prodigy was my first - PCChick. funny I'm a mac girl now.
- Lynette Young
Local ISP then Hotmail and Yahoo! mail.
- Ninh Nguyen
Hotmail, at the time it was good compated to everyone else, then went down the toilet fast, it's better these days but I prefer my Gmail account thank you.
- Eric Fisher
yahoo...still use it, but hate its non-existent spam filter...gmail is still the best at spam cleaning...i have hotmail for msn, but recently they've improved the mail feature, so i use more often now
- brainno722 (Peter)
Compuserve (73000,673 if memory serves me right)... and some other obscure usenet type account through a local BBS.
- Carlos Granier-Phelps
Hotmail. Agree it was awful! I can't believe I ever thought it was okay for the first page of my email client to be a page filled with ads, as opposed to the actual inbox.
- Jess Lee
Compuserve. I don't think it was possible to send formatted text outside of Compuserve back then.
- howard shippin
TSO, which started out as tso.uc.edu but eventually became tso.cin.ix.net.
- Wirehead
UUCP email account at Bell Labs, reached via something like ucbvax!ihnp4!...!fcy Then an account at mcs.net, a Chicago area ISP.
- Fred Yankowski
MyOwnEmail.com. I don't know if they're even still around.
- James Ferguson
I can't remember if I did juno or hotmail first. I think juno....
- EricaJoy
Mine was with netins.net because they offered toll-free dial-up access in the Spring of 1995
- Michael K Pate
oh shit... it must've been Compuserve, although I don't remember if I had real email in there. If not, Yahoo Mail was the first portal mail I had (and I had jungleg@yahoo.com, but then lost it for some reason and couldn't get it back)
- Jorge Escobar
Prodigy! Oh wow. That was a long time ago. I remember I had some 25 cents an e-mail plan. I used to get in trouble from my parents when I went over my allotted amount. I can't imagine paying 25 cents an e-mail today.
- Jennifer Mitchell
Local ISP, Connect2 I think was the name. Haha. Didn't even have 56K internet speed yet at the time. First web based email was Hotmail before Microsoft acquired it.
- Rolf Schewe
Other than my Bell Labs account? Delphi. Fun-ky...
- John Blossom
AOL and then Hotmail....two real winners.....not!
- Bonnie Foster
Hotmail for me. I haven't used it in 3 years.
- Michael Forian
My first emailaddress was at my own designstudio: hoofdcommissaris@cops.nl (meaning 'chief of police') And brought me my nickname Hoof (or Hoof99).
- Ruud van Wijngaarden
Messaging on the Univac in late 70s probably, at the college. BITNET, HEPNET, ARPANET in late 1980s. (Ignoring the BBS phenom of 80s.) EDU & GOV 1989+ My own domain I hosted around 1994. NEVER AOL or that fake-Internet stuff of the mid-90s. Ewww! After years of GOV, moved to COM at work in 1999. Started using GMAIL for all my personal mail when that was in Beta. I now have about 20 domains forward to GMAIL.
- John Johnson
not counting university and school, or BBSes? My first email account would then have been jnebbe@ibm.net (back the first time when IBM did internet services) - they were one of the few to have reasonable dial up plans with a multi-country presence - and I was using OS/2 a lot then too. After it got bought by ATT and they changed the address, I decided that I would always have my own domain for email, so I would never lose people because I lose an email. Hosted it myself for years, now it's all with fastmail
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
his site is pretty cool though i wish photographers wouldn't watermark their pictures. i know why they do it, but it takes away from the really great photos
- Cee Bee
I rode a 20 footer like that in Hawaii on a boogie board... Dropped me straight onto the sand, and then proceeded to drench me with 3 million gallons of water... In retrospect, I'm probably lucky to be alive right now.
- LarchOye
that might be "thrilling" the first time around, but after continually getting pounded like that i'm sure it can become a bit of a "challenge" to deal with
- Cee Bee
maybe this is due to the shortness imposed by tweeter, people have to say meaningful and precise thing in a short stream, this is why brevity and idea encapsulation work on twitter.
- abdellah
But in this case he said more on twitter than in the blog post title.
- Paul Buchheit
yes, but in the twitter message there is the need to point to the article, so this is why the headline have to be significant catchy and strong, in the blog the author think that he get his audience then the headline is less powerful.
- abdellah
Actually, I think it's just because Twitter encourages a more conversational tone, which is generally better than the usual title/subject "tone".
- Paul Buchheit
Limitation encourages more creativity
- John Samuel
better then !! resume the stuff, better from what point of view? it is better from the point that the twitter one is more appealing and this is the main job to do. in the blog post the headline have just to push people to read more, a better test would be to inverse I mean to post the blog headline as a tweet and the tweet as blog post headline :) and I agree limitation encourage creativity.
- abdellah
sounds like people need to think more about what their blog titles are. I've tried over the past six months specifically to think about how my blog title will be shared alone other places.
- Thomas Hawk
I agree, it is must likely that people in twitter will click the Link, it is more personal than choosing your post title. It would be a good Idea to check the titles on the post vs the tweets that led to them to see the whole picture. 10x
- Iaax Page
Sounds like he said it all in the tweet ?- makes you wonder why there was a blog posting at all. Neither the tweet nor the blog post title makes me want to read on so if the goal is to encourage reading the blog post I think both fail.
- Brian Sullivan
I stopped pushing my blog feed to Twitter and FF. I think it is more personal (and people are more apt to click) if I do the linking by hand with some context around it. However, I don't think I'd do what Matt did and add the 'short summary' bit.
- Scott Kingery
Before syndication, blog post titles were ornamental. Mine are often a convoluted pun that only makes sense after you've read the entry (like Diesel Sweeties does, only not as funny). I'm always horrified to see FF posting the title without any content, because they were never intended to stand on their own. (It's probably time to acknowledge the growing contexts and start writing more independent titles.)
- Seth
"I'm always horrified to see FF posting the title without any content" A good blog post title absolutely should work on its own, without any further context... what Nielsen and others call microcontent http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... (edited the article to include Nielsen's definition). Whether it should give away everything is another question. If you're interested in Matt Cutts' writings in general, his book review title is pretty self-explanatory and might get you interested to click-through by
- Philipp Lenssen
Best Practice may be to have nice summaries in your blog feed. Matt's feed, for example, has limited-length excerpts from the post. If he added it as a Generic post with the proper checkbox checked that summary would appear as the first comment. Not ideal, but better than just the title...
- Kevin Fox
Kevin - any idea whether the 'Excerpt' box on wordpress would serve this function? I never put anything in there.
- Hutch Carpenter
I use MediaRSS and summaries in our Antarctica feed: http://friendfeed.com/kfury... I don't know if WordPress's 'Excerpt' functionality matches up with this, but I think so. I'm about to start using WP full time for my personal blog, so I'll definitely be checking it out.
- Kevin Fox
Cool - I'll try adding an Excerpt to my next post, see what happens.
- Hutch Carpenter
I use Drupal, but from observation of people on FriendFeed using WordPress, I believe you might need a plugin for Media RSS support.
- Mark Trapp
Yeah Mark, and it's spotty and undependable...
- anna sauce
I think it's fair to say that a title should stand on its own as a title, but it's not reasonable to expect titles to be summaries. Feed items can explicitly contain a summary. If one is provided, great! If not, why not show a snippet of the content?
- Seth
Yeah my little sister made me feel like a big fat loser when she sent this to me... so I had to share the feeling of loserdom by forwarding it to Katie! LOL!
- Meredith
Yes, Meredith. We can be losers together! Thank your sister for me :o)
- Katie: Witch Of The West
Spidra, that's a good idea actually. If they took the time to send this to me, why couldn't they just come over instead?
- Jon, the Beartato of FF
This is me, and I take no shame in it.
- Mike Nayyar
A big part of why I wrote this post and have it running in my number one photo spot on Flickr right now is because I want more of my photography friends to sign up for the service. I *love* seeing photos here on FriendFeed and there are so many talented photographers who are not here yet who need to be. If we can get more of them to sign up, you guys will love their work. Of course there are many great photographers already on here but still a lot more who could join.
- Thomas Hawk
I had to re-share this with all my FB friends. :)
- Kelly W.
Still trying to figure out this whole friendfeed experience. I've had the account for a while and see lots of my twitter friends posting via ff
- Demetri Mouratis
Hi Demetri =) Different people use FF different ways because they want to get different things out of it. What are you hoping to get out of it?
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Thanks for the tip. I had FF but really never 'got' what it was for. This helped!

TH - for those photographers that are not on here, I put their flickr id into my Flickr Imaginary friend and see their images that way. However, it would be nice to get more photographers on here with their reader shares and such...
- Justin Korn
This is definitely the best "Why Friendfeed" post I've seen.
- Nick in Manila
Justin, agreed. I have a bunch of imaginary friend accounts for Flickr/Zooomr users as well. But it is nicer when they actually have accounts here, their work can be liked and commented to the larger FF community, etc. It seems like a few new people signed up today based on this post so I'm happy for that. Thanks Nick!
- Thomas Hawk
I have AlertThingy FriendFeed Edition as well as AlertThingy v2
-
Did you just reformatted your post, Thomas? It a lot easier to scan through now.
- Alan Le
Alan, a lot of times I post first and edit later. I probably shouldn't do that, but yeah, after posting I broke up some of the paragraphs better, bolded a few things etc., to make it easier to read.
- Thomas Hawk
That's great. Make sure to check out Windows Live Writer for formatting blog posts if you haven't already yet. By the way, I love the new blog design. It's much better than when I helped you with the html way back. http://thomashawk.com/2006...
- Alan Le
Barlow, Im currently developping an Adobe AIR tool for FriendFeed: we comin' !
- David Guyon
Y'know... I must've spent two months randomly Tweeting things like "Will someone PLEASE explain to me why I should be using FriendFeed?" ... And then two days ago I start using my account (I'd had one for a while)... and NOW someone finally makes a post outlining why I should be here. You're two days late, Mr. Hawk, two days late. :P
- Lou
actually, there's no search for Russian word forms on Frf. For me that looks as if there's no search at all
- orie
hmmm.. I didn't know that orie. It seems like there is a lot of international users on FF, that's surprising to me.
- Thomas Hawk
I've been trying to make sense of FF for months now, but every time I come away confused. As it is I feel like I'm drowning under all the social networking sites available. I use Twitter, Plurk and Facebook the most, and I use Ping.fm so I only have to post status updates once. How can I integrate FF into this without making things even more confusing?
- Chris Taylor
oooh! I found the zooomr version of this post with no formatting and I whined somewhere else in my FF feed. This one with all the formatting is better :D
- Tamar Weinberg
Mark - agreed. Also, Thomas ... very nice blog. I like.
- Amani
Good post Thomas. I was thinking it would be hard to find 10 points, but I agree with all your points, and am sure there are probably many more.
- Peter Efland
@Tamar, the unformated text was a problem on the Zooomr image. Kristopher's fixed that bug now so text in descriptions on Zooomr photos should format correctly now.
- Thomas Hawk
I wasn't using FF, but signed up after your post. Now let's see if it is really so useful ;-)
- Marcel Körner
@Marcel also take into consideration who you are subscribed to. Aside from maybe four on your current sub list, they are not very active at all on FF. This will affect your experience here.
- Carlos Ayala
Didn't know there was a "Porn" room on FF (see screenshot)...
- David Young
how did you see that they are not active on FF?
- Marcel Körner
David, the "porn" room on FriendFeed isn't all that active actually. I'm not really interested in porn per se, just thought it was a good group name to claim in the great FriendFeed land group name grab of 2008.
- Thomas Hawk
@Marcel by their numbers, and the fact that i know most of them and can tell you first hand that they are not. (if you hover over people's names you will see their numbers)
- Carlos Ayala
Went out there to check out the quality of the video and it seems you have the server hammered. What are you overall thoughts on the device. Looking to get one for family usage.
- Sloan Bowman
I'd love to see what iMovie '09's anti-shake algorithm would do with that.
- Kevin Fox
Sloan: I like the small size of the FlipCam. A camera that gets taken with you takes more video and provides more value. The Kodak has slightly better video quality and takes AA batteries.
- Robert Scoble
got mine literally in transit now, my 3rd flip cam
- sean percival
How do you like the audio on those two cameras? The Kodak Zi6 audio sounded good when Chris Pirillo and Steve Garfield used it, but they were in environments with little background noise.
- Bruce Lewis
These pocket cams are too expensive for what you get. $200 is a lot for crappy webcam quality video that doesn't take pictures. Also, the CMOS sensor causes a very noticable 'wobbly' video from the rolling shutter and slow processor. On the other hand, the CCD sensor on digicams aren't good for video either since you'll get purple streaks in high contrast scenes and a lot of noise in indoor/low-light.
- Rodfather
Bruce: the audio works great. I have older FlipCam which I use here: http://www.kyte.tv/scobleizer and the audio is great as long as you stay close to the subject. Missionary: Kodak Zi6.
- Robert Scoble
Rodfather: what would you recommend then?
- Robert Scoble
Robert: 2 questions. Is the mic on the Kodak Zi6 as good as the mic on the Flip Ultra? IS the low light performance as good on the Kodak Zi6 as on the Flip Ultra? I remember reading in a review that the low light shooting on the Kodak is not on par with the Flip.
- Gregg H.
I'd recommend a digicam from Samsung at the moment. They are cheap, take decent pics, and record in h.264. The NV24HD has a wide 24mm lens, but the main drawback is the sound cuts off when zooming. Still, it's cheap, small, has optical image stabilization, optical zoom, takes SD cards, and shoots in multiple video resolutions.
- Rodfather
Greggish: I don't know. I will try to do a review. Mike Arrington is testing a few out too and we're going to Davos together. Rodfather: I'll get a Samsung too. They looked very nice at CES.
- Robert Scoble
Robert - you never listen. :P The Flip HD is one of the *WORST* of these types of cameras, dude. You got taken. The Creative Vado kicks the shit out of the Flip Mino HD.
- l0ckergn0me
Robert makes a good point that having the camera with you all the time provides more value. These are small enough to put in your pocket wherever you go, and to use for things you might not have thought of without them. Great if the next gen has some sort of always-available connectivity.
- Tom Landini
Rodfather: It sounds good on paper to use the video mode of a digicam. But I've found that the movie mode on even the better digicams lack when it comes to adjusting to changing light conditions. When moving to bright light you get wash out. When moving to low light you get an almost black screen. Quickly adjusting to light changes and shooting in low light is something the Flip does exceptionally well, even if the image quality is not very high.
- Gregg H.
l0ckergnome: OK, I'll get a Creative Vado. I didn't pay for a FlipHD yet.
- Robert Scoble
@Greggish. Ya it really depends on your use. The processor for the Mino handles light well and with the CMOS sensor, is generally better in low light. Don't get me wrong, I like these, but it's coming to a price point where I'd look into other options with more features. These are geared for ease of use and portability.
- Rodfather
Flip didn't send me mine, either - I wasted good money on it. I've done quite a few comparison tests, and the Vado tops 'em all (certainly, against the Flip).
- l0ckergn0me
Chris I really hate that you use a weird spelling of l0ckergn0me here. Makes it hard to reference you on posts so usually I don't even try. Anyway, thanks, I put a link to your review in my blog and will get a Creative too.
- Robert Scoble
I'm still going strong with my Canon Powershot TX1 ;) HD ftw. Everybody get a Vado. Vamos a Vado.
- Bwana ☠
The Flip Mino HD has great video quality, but it the lens is surprisingly narrow. You never feel that you can fit everything in frame. I have some comparison videos between it and the cheap ($110) Memorex HD cam: http://simsbox.net/p18
- Daniel Sims
I've tried them all. FlipHD the best, but I've been somewhat frustrated with upload time.
- Pete Blackshaw
I have tried 3 brands of HD palmcorders including FlipMinoHD and prefer the Kodak Zi6. Zi6 has higher quality video at 60fps, has real HD out with component cables, larger screen, and still photo capability. Mino does have the advantage on size and charges from USB. Also, watch out if you expect to play the HD videos on a standard netbook. I blog about that here: http://budurl.com/HDcam
- Patrick Moorhead
congrats Jauder. How many of your photos are they interested in?
- Thomas Hawk
9. But they have some odd selections IMO.
- Jauder Ho
FYI, upon reading the Contributer Agreement, it looks like the payment schedule goes from 20 to 30 percent depending on how the image is licensed. Getty gets to keep a good chunk of the money.
- Jauder Ho
Alright, couple more observations after submitting an image. 1) Getty currently does not read IPTC/EXIF from the image thus requiring you to re-enter data. 2) Getty does not import the associated tags from Flickr 3) I am hoping that Flickr will eventually have some sort of "License this image from Getty" link on each photograph that is submitted and accepted.
- Jauder Ho
Quite a few invitations went out ~1400 over the span of the two rounds. I got one. I'm going to be writing about what I've learned about the program tonight. Stay tuned.
- Jim Goldstein
hmmm, my invite must have gotten stuck in one of the intartubez, too...
- vicster
I'm not too impressed with this program, and not just because I haven't gotten an invite. It seems incredibly restrictive - they want exclusive rights (I can't even sell my own prints?), and no creative commons allowed? Lame.
- Eric P
I simply don't get why Flickr just didn't build a stock photography option in house - let all photographers opt-in any and/or all of their photos to sell as stock through Flickr, to anyone who wants to commercially license the work. Flickr has the biggest and best organized database of photos in the world - why they keep outsourcing that value to third parties is beyond me.
- Eric P
Eric, I agree. It could have been built much better by Flickr themselves, but I don't think the momentum or the legal clearance was there behind the project at Yahoo. It's unfortunate. I'm still waiting and reserving judgment on this program until I better see how it works and operates.
- Thomas Hawk
I too would have preferred a Flickr Stock site. But failing that, I'm going the route of one of the replies to Jim's post, which is to submit a couple of pictures which in my mind are not the best of your collection. I would also point out that signing up with Getty means licensing your images for 2 years (based on my reading of the contract) with no way to remove your image if you change your mind. So consider carefully before you submit.
- Jauder Ho
I was curious as to what images that Getty wants to Rights Manage so I asked on the Getty Images Contributors group and thought I would share the results http://www.flickr.com/groups...
- Jauder Ho
Interesting Jauder, it seems like they've made that group private and are not allowing outsiders in to see it. That's sort of lame in my opinion. Only those approved as Getty contributors can read threads in that group. This new service is feeling more and more exclusionary all the time. I think that's bad for community.
- Thomas Hawk
Hmm, I did not know that the group was private. I guess they have the right to do so but it does seem somewhat against the spirit of sharing and contributing.
- Jauder Ho
I think it goes against the spirit of sharing, transparency and openness for them to make the group private as well. But then again so does requiring you to change your license on photos for sale from Creative Commons to All Rights Reserved. Personally I worry they are going about this the wrong way. By being very exclusionary they alienate the spirit of community that is a large part of Flickr. People who don't get selected feel bad.
- Thomas Hawk
I think that they would do better to allow anyone to join the program and then find at least a few images from anyone's stream. If the images suck they won't sell. But creating sort of a "private club" whose photographers are "worthy" vs. the rest of us who suck sends a bad message to users from Flickr/Getty. Putting a "Members Only" sign on the group about the program only further alienates people.
- Thomas Hawk
I was asked from another site, NowPublic to have my photos CC my photos and sorry can't do that. Also with Getty, even though its a big stock company, I don't think I will dip into the profit scheme either. I am in photography for integrity, quality, some fun and $.
- polou/indigo_bow
"We've just added a friend importer for Twitter so you can easily find and subscribe to your Twitter friends who are already on FriendFeed."
- Bret Taylor
from Bookmarklet
Nice! Just used it, thanks to the FF team. There were a couple odd mis-matches that I caught, though: Thomas Rauscher (https://friendfeed.com/wuz) != @hotdogsladies
- Micah Wittman
I'm confusednow! I think I need it the otherway around :)
- Vicky
Sooo. Does this collect non ff twitter users?
- Phill Price
Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. I also almost posted about such a feature this morning. I guess in theory I could create imaginary friends for all the twitter users I follow that are NOT on FriendFeed... is there a way to automate that? And then perhaps convert them to non-imaginary friends once they join? :)
- Dylan Parker
Some are not who they say they are.. Got a few in my list 'Mark Hobbs @patricknorton, Ron Perrella @leolaporte (private feed)' Other than those, great stuff, thought id done something like this to start with when i first signed up, guess not.
- Simon Wicks
Simon: we do our best to make sure someone is who they say they are before recommending them but a few could slip through the cracks. Your feedback definitely helps find the outliers.
- Benjamin Golub
oh we can also search other twitter users' friends, nice.
- Eren Emre Kanal
@Simon - noticed that too.. Some people are using FF for their personal RSS aggregator and pulling in content from other people. Most likely why they have their feed marked private.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
The only slight issue, which is not a big deal, is when people add other people's Twitter feeds to their FriendFeed account. In the search I got results for people who have added other people's Twitter feed to their FF account instead of the actual owners of the Twitter accounts I am following. I do this with imaginary friends. They must not know what imaginary friends are for.
- Rolf Schewe
This is cool! But noticing some bugs too. I.e. twitter/techcrunch goes to john rocker etc.
- Jauder Ho
Jauder: In that case it is likely because http://friendfeed.com/techcru... doesn't have @techcrunch added as a service. Once it is added we should recommend the correct FriendFeed account.
- Benjamin Golub
No worries, I scanned the list manually and it added fine. I would suggest giving the ability to add to more than one list though. I created a new list called Twitter but would the people I just added be added to the home feed too?
- Jauder Ho
Hmm. It found 3 twitter friends for me, and none of the corresponding FF users are correct. Weird. [looks again] Oh, I get it...none of them are actually on FF, it's just that other people have imported their twitter accounts. Ugh.
- Ken Sheppardson
any chance we can get imaginary friends created automatically for twitter friends that are not using friendfeed?
- berkay
nice thanks ken - was wanting something that went FF to Twitter as well
- Marco(aureliusmaximus)
Oops. Smooth. Overwhelming. Added 62 & sent 8 requests. Simply good. Waiting for the big news wave now :)
- Markus Merz
this would really rock if you could do it for Flickr as well. It would also be interesting if FF was smart enough to delete imaginary friends with the real ones as they show up at FF.
- Thomas Hawk
Given I can put in any user ID, I can pull in any followers on Twitter, period. Shouldn't this tie in to the account you have registered?
- Louis Gray
It prepopulates with the account you have registered, but we let you type in any account because the info is available on Twitter, and you may have a Twitter account that you have chosen not to connect to FriendFeed.
- Bret Taylor
wasnt there some tool for that... or maybe that was the other way around - intreresting for sure. However, actually think I know my friendfeed people better than them on Twitter, so I´ll see
- Peter Efland
Anyway you can add Facebook support? Also other blog networks (like LiveJournal, Blogger, WordPress and TypePad).
- darnell
from BuddyFeed
One great feature. 184 new subscription. I hope some of them will follow me back here.
- Ryo / Fuck Facebook
That's what you get for having thousands of followers.
- Richard A.
That worked *really* well. Hmm, maybe I'll just unsub those folks on Twitter as long as they are bringing their feed in here. Sorry, Twitter.
- Laura Norvig
Laura - you will gettheir Twitter statuses, but you won't get the replies to them from people whom you don't follow, if you follow what I mean. Gahh.
- Candy Schwartz
Oh, I don't typically dig that deep. Wouldn't that require TweetDeck or using Twitter search? You're right, though, if I happen to be on Twitter and someone asks an interesting question, sometimes it's nice to see the replies of the people I *do* follow.
- Laura Norvig
Thanks for the great feedback everyone! We just pushed some fixes that should make our recommendations even more accurate based on your feedback.
- Benjamin Golub
Roberto, define rockstar - I thought this was a great picture, and not many people have more followers than Scoble. He's built his brand from the ground up.
- Jesse Stay
I was kidding :) But yeah, i take your point. I agree: Great pic.
- Roberto Bonini
What are you drinking there Robert? It looks like an Alka Seltzer with a slice?
- Ed Richardson
hey it doesn't work for me. i'm still using Techmeme... but it's good for competition.
- Shamir Ramjan
Looks like Scoble broke it! Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet'.......
- Ben Hedrington
Techfuga is busted. I blame Scoble.. "Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 111 in /var/www/vhosts/techfuga.com/httpdocs/config/config.inc.php on line 58 error1"
- Berk D. Demir
love it. Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 111 in /var/www/vhosts/techfuga.com/httpdocs/config/config.inc.php on line 58 error1
- Lou Paglia
You know, if they're truly American, they should go and sue Scoble. That's called DDoS. No matter how its managed. The result is denial of service.
- Berk D. Demir
It's up here. EDIT: oh, wait, it's not. Sigh.
- Robert Scoble
yeah, looks real good, i was just looking for info on "Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 111 in /var/www/vhosts/techfuga.com/httpdocs/config/config.inc.php on line 58 error1"
- MG Siegler
It shows exactly what is happening in the Modern Top News Site Community... they are all one big ERROR!!!!
- Tyler (Chacha)
I imagine the site going down was a coincidence, but if not, that suggests a lot of people are hanging on Scoble's tweets today. It is a holiday for some in the states, so may be. :-)
- Loren Heiny
The funny thing about this site is, if you want to compete with techmeme; go and get your self a serious hosting service. That's probably a shared server, obviously managed by Plesk. That's lame. Even more lame than Twitter's struggles of scaling... Hey actually they were trying to scale out with real traffic.
- Berk D. Demir
Berk: yeah. Being down guarantees I won't talk about TechFuga again for a long while. Gabe Rivera FTW!
- Robert Scoble
There's got to be a destruction testing business idea here!
- Steve Nimmons
Apologies to all: yesterday we migrated database and web server and it seems we are having trouble sorting out some database connection issues. It should be fine soon and I take opportunity to let you all know that TECHFUGA 2.0 is coming in a few days...Joao/TechFuga
- TechFuga
2. RT smart people's stuff but add onto it with a good comment.
- Robert Scoble
3. If you have something smart to say, say it to someone directly like "Hey @techcrunch you should check out the new Palm Pre."
- Robert Scoble
I now await the inevitable flood of "RTs" of this message ;-)
- Warren
4. Send wine or other bribes to people who make lots of noise.
- Robert Scoble
Sounds like someone's running low on wine :)
- Eric Florenzano
5. If you are friends with a real celebrity bring them around at blogger/twitter parties. Make sure you get them to follow you and remember your name. All good twitterers have iPhones or other phones that they can tweet from.
- Robert Scoble
6. Put your twitter and friendfeed addresses on your business cards.
- Robert Scoble
7. Talk shit about Eric Florenzano. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Ok, well that's *someone's* blog done for tomorrow, then! :)
- WorldofHiglet
8. Follow people back if they add value. 1938media has added 1,000 new followers since he started following everyone back.
- Robert Scoble
What kind of wine goes with bribe? Did you ask GaryVee while in Vegas?
- Dave Cadoff
9. Talk shit about that Scoble dude. Yeah, me. Sometimes it gets a link and a follow. Especially if you teach me something while you are calling me an idiot.
- Robert Scoble
LOL *hands Robert a bottle of wine* Please add the "don't pout or make a twitter fuss when you notice someone drops you. Insecurity isn't a attraction"
- Sprite
10. Be interesting. Craig Newmark got hundreds of follows in first evening (I was the first to follow him) after I tweeted about him. Why? Because he was interesting already.
- Robert Scoble
Remember it's not about the followers - it's about the relationships. Your purpose of having many followers should be so you can build relationships with as many of them as possible.
- Jesse Stay
11. Do something sensational like tatoo your twitter address onto your face.
- Robert Scoble
BTW, (real-life) relationships then bring more followers
- Jesse Stay
Wine? Bribe? Anything will get noticed. Better yet, put a custom label on it and include your Twitter address on it.
- Robert Scoble
Liked for the 'talk shit about Scoble'. Also, Scoble, do you accept Mead?
- Will Higgins™
12. Hang out with Jesse Stay. Better yet, bring him to Twitter's headquarters for an interview (that's what I did and it worked).
- Robert Scoble
I've tried to do everything on this list, but the tattoo isn't going to work. I've already branded my twitter address onto several steers.
- Mike Nayyar
13. Stalk Guy Kawasaki until he calls the cops on you or follows you.
- Robert Scoble
14. Get naked. Take pictures. Include your Twitter address.
- Robert Scoble
er - we've seen most of your body, Robert, so where's *your* tatoo?
- WorldofHiglet
Jesse: that's what you think. Ask your real friends and they will probably tell you otherwise. :-)
- Robert Scoble
22. get on Leo Laporte's show and have him order his listeners to follow you. He did this last Sunday to my son and you should have seen the followers roll in. That dude has POWER!!!
- Robert Scoble
Robert, I asked them and they said you're the man
- Jesse Stay
23. Get @garyvee to take you wine tasting. Tweet it.

26. Get into an argument with @techcrunch.
- Robert Scoble
I've mentioned my Twitter account on The Tech Guy but I think my last name throws people. :D
- MarkCarras
29. Claim you are above this stupid game.
- Robert Scoble
Quit Twitter, come back after 2 months
- Jesse Stay
All bloggers are wrong at least every few posts. Especially me! :D
- MarkCarras
30. Follow more interesting people. That's why I've said for a year now it's most important who you follow, not who is following you. What I really was trying to say there is if you want better followers you've got to follow better people.
- Robert Scoble
lol Jesse. Twitter? What's that? I thought I was learning how to sell a shamwow
- Erin @queenofspain
What kind of wine are we talking here?
- Chris Poirier
Mark, you bet, but we are all type-A personalities. We hate to be told we're wrong and will defend it to our dying day. :)
- Jesse Stay
31: Give away something. Hold a contest.
- Robert Scoble
Launch a great Twitter service and stick your twitter name in the footer
- Chris Saad
32. Invite Louis Gray over for dinner. Make sure he brings his twins. Take pictures. 1000 extra points if you bring shirts for the twins with your Twitter address on them.
- Robert Scoble
34. Chris Saad is right. Speaking of Chris, if you party with him in Amsterdam you'll get more followers. Oh, and if you are the guy who wrote http://www.twittervision.com you'll get more followers.
- Robert Scoble
Take a pic down a girls shirt and post it on FF.
- David
Not 'Chris Saad' robert - @ChrisSaad :D

- Erin @queenofspain
I've had 2 new FriendFeed followers just from this thread.

- Paul Povolni
I buy dinner for anyone who comes to my area and contacts me through Twitter...and is following me. :D
- MarkCarras
I find that not following people back increases the rate at which I gain followers
- Simon T Small
Simon: being Robert Scoble is pretty hard. You've gotta keep coming up with new ways to find followers. It's easier to call him an asshole on twitter. Even better, call him, TechCrunch, 1938media, JasonCalacanis, Guy Kawasaki, and a few other people assholes.
- Robert Scoble
37. Jeremiah Owyang found this one: stop Twittering.
- Robert Scoble
I'm amazed I don't get called an asshole more often. I think this should be my New Years Resolution. :D
- MarkCarras
38. Follow someone, then when they don't follow you back, call them out on it and say they are lame.
- Robert Scoble
39. Come up with a new Twitter game. Get it retweeted by Chris Brogan.

Make a real funny stream on Friendfeed, but better yet put it on your blog so SEO really gathers people to it and put your Friendfeed/Twitter handles right in the post
- Ian D. Nock
40. Pay Magpie to spam everyone with your Twitter address.
- Robert Scoble
Oh don't tell people to talk shit about you. It's kinda sad to see people talking crap about you, then when you're some place they are, they turn all fanboy.
- Anika
Robert: wait, not change in plans, I don't hate those people, damn it!
- Simon T Small
No one gets to be King of the mommybloggers until I deem it so dammit

- Jesse Stay
44. Come up with a new set of rules for Twitter behavior.
- Robert Scoble
Oh boy, Mr. Scoble. I hope you are not Tweeting while getting drunk and having sex... Poor Mommy and son... Some things need to stay sacred. Do you really want the world at large to know what you are doing at all times? Quit goofing and send us more tech info we enjoy. Great videos from CES by the way. I even got my partner to come and watch some of them. Thanks for the good stuff!
- Colleen
45. Get more followers on Facebook then get them all to join you on Twitter.
- Robert Scoble
46. Be @god. Even better. Be @god and hand out beta invites to something cool coming soon.

52. Move to SF and go to every. single. Tweet-up! YAY HOW FUN!

Jesse: that only used to work. There are no defaults on friendfeed anymore. In fact, if you don't have any friends it won't recommend anyone to you.
- Robert Scoble
Name drop as much as you can and do whatever it takes to get written up on ValleyWag (wow, I've learned a lot in six months!)
- Mona Nomura
Get Robert Scoble to tweet that he can't believe what's going on at your birthday party even though it was a tame house party with friends
- Chris Saad
Tell people to NOT follow you. I mean it. Don't.
- Andrew Smith
Post a bajillion pictures of your kids, pets, and more kids.
- Mona Nomura
Make sure you participate in every. single. Robert post and name drop him as much as possible. ;)
- Mona Nomura
Mona, great one - Kids, Dogs, and Kittenz - Bacon, too
- Jesse Stay
@Dieter if a post was sponsored by anyone scoble would let u know - trust me
- Chris Saad
Go to every. single. event and take + post as many. pictures. as you can w/ the "famous" people and PING.FM THOSE PICTURES!
- Mona Nomura
Here's a novel idea - Have something interesting to say and focus on producing value instead of your follower count :)
- Chris Saad
Mona, Facebook and Flickr tag them as well
- Jesse Stay
Always respond to people with an "@" ie: @scobelizer WOW this thread RULES - since you never know what Google's indexing!
- Mona Nomura
Dieter: Huh? If anything this post would be sponsored by Seagate. You can follow them at http://friendfeed.com/seagate (Seagate sponsors my video show, not my friendfeed account).
- Robert Scoble
Mona: 'post famous pictures' Love it. Works a charm on facebook.
- Simon T Small
i have a new one: use Browser bugs to greet your blogvisitors with their twittername http://is.gd/eMdF @andreasklinger
- Andreas Klinger
Chris: having something interesting to say? No, that couldn't work, could it? I'd rather talk about my followers. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Retweet this thread (no, that's not a request, it's an idea)
- Jesse Stay
Chris Saad: yer talkin crazy with that last one. Focus on content? Insanity.
- Scott Kingery
55: Dieter reminded me of one more: talk about products that already have Twitter accounts. When I talked about HR Block they followed me. So did Ford. So did Zappos.
- Robert Scoble
56. Don't auto-DM followers just follow them back or RT their next tweet
- Damian Holmes
Find a unique thing that you can help another Twitter user on - the bigger the user, the better. Fix their problem.
- Jesse Stay
So did @HeavyAsHell Oh wait, that's my site. :D
- MarkCarras
57. post a comment to a robert scoble FF feed
- Damian Holmes
Luke: T-shirts are so common. How about shoes? Jeans? Underwear? Don Box used to have his company logo on underwear. Called them "Boxer shorts." I still remember those, even though I've forgotten all the lame Tshirts I've ever gotten.
- Robert Scoble
Only a slut is going to be able to advertise well with branded underwear
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Compete for the most followers on Twitter - didn't Leo and Calacanis do that at one time? (or am I getting the contenders wrong?)
- Jesse Stay
58. write your twitter name on your eyelids then go to a tweetup or large tech conference
- Damian Holmes
MiniMage: not true. Don Box is no slut. He now runs a team at Microsoft.
- Robert Scoble
Be an early adopter - be one of the first, get in early, and build a follow base early
- Jesse Stay
Another one? Take pictures of Twitter users and follow them. They almost always follow back.
- Robert Scoble
I aint never heard of Don Box, and that means I didn't see that underwear! ;). No, seriously, I concede, but I had to make a retort.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
I think a good way to make more friends is to live an interesting life. Life is a journey. You meet people just around every corner. Twitter happens to be one of them.
- Helge V. Keitel
Build up and help out a non-A list, but up-and-coming A or B list Twitter user or blogger. They will be more appreciative (it's those people that like the shirts and swag).
- Jesse Stay
Tweet something like this: "I'm looking for funny people to follow, do you know any?"
- Robert Scoble
Get @gapingvoid to use your twitter address in one of his cartoons (he designed my business cards and you would be amazed how well that works).
- Robert Scoble
@Mona use a hot suggestive silhouette as your avatar - that alwasy helps too
- Chris Saad
Take Louis Gray to a Vodka bar. You might not get any followers, but you will have a good time and he doesn't drink so you'll have a safe drive home, too!
- Robert Scoble
follow A, B, C, D, E, F, X and Z listers
- Damian Holmes
Create a custom T-shirt with "I Love Your Stream" (mine) on front(or your own words) and your Twitter name on back. I did it with @crypticfragment at zazzle.com. Still waiting for it. I didn't put twitter name on back though, should have, but not trying to gain HUGE followers, just the ones that would like to hear about furniture, interior design and eco home stuff! I put: twitter:FTW, on the back.
- Leslie Carothers
Robert, not to mention get on the front of Valleywag
- Jesse Stay
I keep hiding this but it doesn't stay hidden. :(
- Mona Nomura
Follow the Top 500 in your City then Top 500 in your Country that's at least 500 follow backs
- Damian Holmes
Jesse: I find that I get a lot of followers by keeping the A list on the A list. Who wants to deal with those assholes if they fall onto the B list?
- Robert Scoble
I'm with @garyvee & how he encourages us to *execute the best YOU* - don't try to be anyone else but the *best* you... your passionate self. Peeps who resonate with you will follow. And for sure add value, retweet good resources, build peeps up, thank those who comment on your blog & RT you.
- Mari Smith
58. Post to a list to get people to follow you. such as the one explaining how to get people to follow you...
- Sheraz Mahmood
Name drop Hollywood celebrities even if you don't know them.
- Mona Nomura
By the way, I'm following everyone who has participated on this so far. Why? Because only geeks would be online on a Saturday night and I want to follow all the geeks. So, everyone here has at least one follower on friendfeed.
- Robert Scoble
write a dramatic post about a family from Romania with a child with down syndrome and ask people to donate money.
- Simon T Small
Robert: You'll need to unfollow me, its 6pm Sunday here in Aussieland, so I'm not a commited geek sorry
- Simon T Small
Robert: Gotta do something while Windows 7 downloads :)
- Scott Kingery
Haha!! So busted - very good point re your last comment, Robert. Thank goodness for fab understanding spouses is all I say. hehe
- Mari Smith
60. Get on FriendFeed and Twitter super early and become de facto popular. And yes, #32 is a must.
- Louis Gray
Robert: were not all in Silicon Valley - its 16:30 in China - (awaiting the flames or unfollows - which is worst?)
- Damian Holmes
... and always listen to Scoble! Ha-ha. Robert, we admire you!
- Alan Kodzasov
Another tip: Don't live in Australia nearly NOBODY here is on Twitter
- Simon T Small
Compliment the crap out of "A-listers" and always laugh at all of their jokes. Make sure to add at least seven exclamation points. ie:"LOL!!!!!!!!!!" to stand out from the crowd.
- Mona Nomura
Note: above only works if you participate in every. single. one of their posts on both Twitter and FriendFeed!
- Mona Nomura
Robert: 5:30 pm in Tokyo. I'm pretty much just getting going for the day. :-)
- Ken Brady
Say something that makes a 200 + comment thread ;)
- videopixil
When you send bribes, make sure to research. ie: LG doesn't drink but Robert likes wine. Subtly ask for preferences so they'll get something they actually _like_ <--KEY.
- Mona Nomura
Use Tweetdeck and apply filters to see subjects you are expert in. You'll notice lots of people look for advice in certain fields so you can reply and show your expertise. I notice those people you help are happy and more likely to follow you even if you don't follow them.
- Luca Filigheddu
from fftogo
Not to forget: You need to stress that Mac and iPhone are cool and superior.
- Ryo / Fuck Facebook
@videopixil Of course, that applies to most things Scoble says.
- Ken Brady
@tkpleslie says," Ask people like @scobleizer sincere question about whether Nokia's new phone works for people, like me, that wear hearing aids when's he's in Japan in middle of your night at the actual Nokia conference where phone is being intro'd for first time. He did respond, nicely, but did not follow so I guess it doesn't work too well.
- Leslie Carothers
Send Mona lego art wrapped in bacon. Oh wait, that'll get you friendfeed follows.
- Yuvi
This was before I really understood as @marismith says, that true value in twitter for me is having followers and following those people with intersecting paths because, like in real life, that's how interesting real conversations have a chance to develop into fuller, deeper, more lasting relationships.
- Leslie Carothers
Robert, It's Sunday Morning in Loviisa, Finland ;)
- Helge V. Keitel
Leslie: I did follow you here on friendfeed. I still haven't been able to find out if it works well for hearing impaired. I'm sure it does, though. The speaker phone on that device is pretty darn good.
- Robert Scoble
Speak in SAT verbiage at all times to make yourselves sound smarter.
- Mona Nomura
Never admit: ay kin knot reed end rite... :(
- Mona Nomura
This is a great list Robert, I love making new friends. All those awful things people are saying about you must be wrong - aren't they? -]
- Chris Loft
Post YouTube clips of classical music to make yourself seem more cultured.
- Mona Nomura
Share everythign popular on digg because if it's on digg, it MUST be cool.
- Mona Nomura
stop following people who post about following and follow people who don't try...
- Ryan
mention yourself on Scobles friendfeed (@mattrendo)
- Matt Rendo
Keep up with memes since everyone wants to hear what's been repeated on the web a trillion times without contributing a new opinion. ie: CES looks cool.
- Mona Nomura
All great points. I've always hated requests for follows. I'm only attempting something like it for charity. In that instance, those who do the same should be very clear about WHY they want followers in the first place. Otherwise it looks like you're just in it for yourself.
- Brandon Mendelson
Chris Loft: everything said about me is absolutely true! :-)
- Robert Scoble
So it's true that you have huge... giant... socks?
- Chris Saad
Thanks for the follow here on FriendFeed, Robert. I know this is where you interact. But,because home base for me is Twitter, I never saw your follow here until I went to comment on this thread! It's too much for me to constantly go back and forth and also keep up with work, life, friends and family. How do you guys do it? Thanks, tho, Robert, for letting me know. I learn from you ALL the time.
- Leslie Carothers
I really am not obsessed with more followers. Sure I appreciated them as much as the next person. It is not a popularity contest for my use case. Hence, I will never be a "Top 100" person on Twitter. ;)
- Rodney Rumford
If it's on the Internet, it is ALWAYS true, Robert. ;)
- Mona Nomura
Try to explain yourself out of being a geek when you really are
- Jesse Stay
I am indeed a failure, all the more reason to follow me... and that BACON Mona N. mentioned
- Matt Rendo
Get Robert Scoble to Foreward/Afterword your book for you
- Jesse Stay
@Jesse I'm incapable of explaining myself out of being a geek. Better to embrace it.
- Ken Brady
61: Add on to a Robert Scoble numbered list with an incrementally interesting item.
- Steve Garfield
back up your success with nothing more than 140 characters
- Sheraz Mahmood
I've noticed that people who start a controversy, especially with a high profile person, get an immediate boost in followers. You'd think it would backfire but it seems to have the opposite effect. Maybe it's the trainwreck factor? People curious what on earth will be said next?
- Liz
Apparently posting on Scoble's Friendfeed works... 6 followers in the last few minutes.
- Matt Rendo
Woah. 278+ comments. Impressive! This is definitely one that will stick on FFholic for a while.
- Phil G
Wondering is anybody will read all these comments. I do believe if twitter doesn't get it together, that a large group will flock out to another destination. ala: Poof!
- Dave
Hey @scobleizer, your post would have been more appropriate on a blog.
- Klaus Alexander Seistrup
Post photos of cute puppies on FriendFeed.
- Amit Morson
To get followers, jump into a Tweetchat "room", get into the convo, follow folks then tell them in the chat room that you are following. For the "Happy09" chat, there were tons of people in there. Better yet, start your own chat/chat meme!
- Jesse P. Luna
@ reply like crazy to let the person know you followed them ie: @Scobleizer HI I FOLLOWED YOU FOLLOW ME BACK repeat until FailWhale/FailRobot shows up.
- Mona Nomura
Well, that's starting to work . . . anyone else getting lots of new friends? . . . and I didn't have to insult anybody. I think I might have to post one of my classical video clips for Mona http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- Chris Loft
Leslie, the N series work v well with the hearing impaired, but the iPhone works even better from my experience FTW!
- Sally Church
One thing that annoys me: people who discuss their follower numbers on twitter. Its just not interesting! I just subscribed to someone and unsubscribed the next day as 4 tweets were about passing 10000 - I'm very glad for you but it is just noise in my feed. Now I understand the feeling - I was amazed the day 100 people followed me (it is all relative :) ) - but it is not necessary to tweet about it.
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
I was going to send you some Swiss wine Robert, but I was told it doesn't travel well, so drank it myself. Just so you know, it was good :-)
- Paul Shadwell
I'm paling up with several here, in spite of what Mr. Scoble says about Saturday night geeks. -Mr. Geek ;-P
- Eddie Soto
Participate in a Robert Scoble's friendfeed conversation on Saturday night, have him follow you, post the screenshot of him following you
- Bertrand Doux
On the subject of more followers, arrrrrgh! *runs screaming from room.... *
- Sally Church
Tweet about Windows 7(or something equally as interesting), which I'll be doing a lot of in the coming days, It's installing as I type this!
- Kevin Lloyd
Tweet, but don't tweet too much because people apparently don't want to hear from you (or is it just me! ;)) THAT much! :)
- Christopher Kusek
Paul, what's that about swiss wine not travelling so well? It travels beautifully (but you need to get the good ones). It is so hard to find outside Switzerland because the swiss tend to drink all of it.
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Liz, I thought that was really funny cos it's Sunday evening here. I'm not some z-list geek sitting here wasting my time on a Saturday night. -[
- Chris Loft
point 4 above is shameless self-plug :) but entertaining :)))
- A.T.
64. Comment on a Robert Scoble list at 2:21 AM in bed becausse you could not sleep
- Tyler (Chacha)
65. Plan to write a blog post on thisentry in the morning

Follow an obscure norwegian and get incoherent conversations about whales, blåbærsyltetøy, and the semantic web;) (which may make people curious.. or unfollow you actually..)
- Thomas Bøhm
Get up at 6 am on Sundays if living in Europe because otherwise you miss Robert Scoble's craziest moments and most interesting threads = people *damn* I should have never slept in!

A real one: Upload a sexy picture on your profile or your twitter bg !!
- İbrahim Uzun [ j ]
Claim that Scoble and Techcrunch are simply manufactured entities by a mysterious corporate power using Coke vs. Pepsi tactics to polarize the masses in an effort to conquer the world.
- Bob Starr
RT @scobleizer Robert this is good advice, except I don't see any reference to bodacious tat-tas. ;)
- John Craft
RT @scobleizer Robert wow, your post generated so many comments, is this the most number of comments from a single tweet in Twitter history? Can anyone confirm?
- Alvin
Sorry not Twitter, this is from FriendFeed :)
- Alvin
67. write about stuff you are enthusiastic about and that's only covered by a handful of people yet (like virtual worlds, metaverse) and shamelessly reveal that you are enthusiastic about that in one of the most commented on @scobleizer threads ;-)
- Gaby K. Slezák
stop reading half way but say it was awesome anyway
- Stephen Breen
You forgot about having a whole lot of time on your hands!
- John D Reasor
I knew I should have tweeted from the back of that police van on the stroke of new year's eve, watching the fireworks. And walking away. Walking. With a big grin on my face. We'z not dus photoz. Doh.
- Chris Loft
Write an "unofficial biography of Robert Scoble" and have it published? ;)

Talk about the versatility of bacon - BACON - crisp, tasty BACON
- BEX
Just noticed this is a very dude-heavy thread (not all but mainly) and that I mainly subscribe to guys on FriendFeed. But on Twitter I have about 60/40 men/women Following mix, I think. It was the comments about ta-tas and sexy profile photos that made me realize the difference.
- Liz
Lock Robert Scoble, Mona N, Jesse Stay, Louis Gray, Jason Calacanis and Techcrunch in a room. Only release them when they've retweeted every single of your tweets and told all their followers to follow you!
- Nicholas James
nope its nun of the above; .they are just hacking into your FF account; If you really want more followers on Twitter and friendfeed this is what you do, its...aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.they got me.
- tomartomartini
Yep .. I think this has reached the most active discussion .. ever (It past Dave Winer's post which is most discussed in past 30 days)
- Tyler (Chacha)
Come on people! We need to reach 500 comments!
- Tyler (Chacha)
Tweet unto you as you would like to be tweeted.
- iamkhayyam
Create a Robert Scoble fan blog and title it Mr. Awesome. :)
- Bill Romanos
69. start a list and slowly move out of it as other members of the community move in to pick it up (there is no 68) - you are now running things without even being there.
- Valeria Maltoni
Be a more interesting what Robert? :p oh and maybe follow the fastest top ten commenters here.
- mrsha
I am reading this in friendfeed on my iPhone and immediately regretting my decision to tap "read more..." I made it through the first 12 then began skimming and my thumb began sobbing...
- John Reynolds
I don't remember any friendfeed item getting more than 300 comments. I think this is now the new high water mark. Wow!
- Robert Scoble
Or: Post a “If you want more followers on Twitter and friendfeed here's what to do:” tweet :-)
- Marco Massarotto
Not being in this comment stream is so embarrassing. Wait, so is BEING in this comment stream!
- Tom Guarriello
i wonder if you did it all wrong, would you really get no followers...
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Joelle: if you did it all wrong you would still get followers but they just would be all spammers.
- Robert Scoble
Robert - define spam... Is this post spam?
- Brian Roy
Comment on the longest thread in Friendfeed history.
- Mike Lewis
it seems pretty simple: post interesting things, interact thoughtfully, and be patient
- Kelly W.
70. When all else fails, make interesting crap up about Robert, Gary, Brogan, etc..
- Todd Jordan
It isn't how many follow you... it is the quality of those you follow. But... that makes it hard to keep score and determine who is "winning".
- Brian Roy
patient? I want 1000 followers and I want them now! ;) (actually, I am with Kelly on this one)
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
You know... Chris Brogan liked a post of mine and retweeted it letting everyone know... it ended up bringing me about 800 new visitors in the span of 2 hours. There's definitely something to be said about being seen with the right people. :)
- Steven Sanders
Hey Robert, say something positive about each of us today? Really be a boost.
- Todd Jordan
AVG works just fine for me under Windows 7!
- Dave Oliver
Todd: you all are beautiful. And smart. That's why I am following everyone on this thread.
- Robert Scoble
It's simple, but just do two things (in order): 1. Create good content. 2. Market that content in an intelligent, non-spammy way.
- Daniel Miessler
Daniel: marketing part is what we're really talking about here. How to/who to/when to/where to/what to market.
- Todd Jordan
That said: Talk about Twitter and FriendFeed all day every day. Don't forget to include: "I AM A SOCIAL MEDIA EXPERT" in all of your profiles.
- Mona Nomura
Make special badges that scream your self proclaimed title. You know, kind of like flair? Or girl/boy scouts?
- Mona Nomura
@Mona - heck yeah, huge % of new followers claim to be soc media experts.
- Todd Jordan
Todd- FAIL. You forgot Rule #163. NAME DROP. @scobelizer (I'm just namedropping but really addressing Mona... err @monaaa)
- Mona Nomura
Not call anyone out but I think it should be: " I AM A SOCIAL MEDIA SLUT!1!" ;-P
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Mathew - CRAP you stole my thunder... I'm working on a blog post entitled "How to know if you are a social media slut"... thanks!
- Brian Roy
Brian - I hope that comes after: "10,000 Ways to Effectively use Twitter for Business"
- Mona Nomura
I wish FF would timestamp comments. It'd be interesting to know how this conversation flowed...or jumped around.
- Liz
Mona - pretty sure those two are the same post... No?
- Brian Roy
Liz: Just hang out over the little convo balloon to the left of the comments. It shows you how long ago the comment was left. :-)

UStream and play Wii while you're lightly toasted with a fun friend (@queenofspain)
- Jesse P. Luna
Start your own threads using all and only Robert's suggestions. Originality means nothing, it's all about being a Robert clone!

Talk like you are deluded into thinking the iPhone and Apple computers are superior machines.
- Mark Stahler
Help Robert getting 400 comments or any other all time high on friendfeed!
- Gaby K. Slezák
Here's the 401st for good measure! I kinda use Twitter and FF to keep up with new, and record ideas and thoughts for myself, but if some people out there find a common ground with me, that's very cool! I think too much is placed on these online friend / follower counts overall tho... BTW, this comment is probably on the "How NOT to get more followers on Twitter or FF" list. :) Keep feeding me the knowledge Scobs!
- AdPanda
Spell @Scobleizer correctly when trying to drop a name ... lol.
- Robert Couture
Bump .... @charlieanzman. I can't believe this thread!
- Charlie Anzman
Charlie - the sheer #s of comments or the fact that this is such a popular topic?
- Susan Beebe
How can you possibly read all of this and get anything done? This is an example of FF overkill.
- Scott Maentz
@Susan folks are now commenting for the fun of it. :)
- Todd Jordan
Wow! I remember when this began as three items, then Scoble got all giddy and inspired and started this hilarious chain of absurdity. Well done Mr. @Scobleizer

It is hard to enter that many o's on an iPhone. EDIT -> I put in spaces - apparently I annoyed Brandon...
- Brian Roy
@Brian: Please edit your post so it doesn't break everyone's feed. I'd like to not hide this item. Thanks.
- AJ Kohn
I think that I made a comment on this post but I can't find it. And Mona, you are cracking me up!!
- BEX
I wonder if there is a limit to how many comments can be added to a post on FF
- Susan Beebe
The funniest part about all this is that I've gotten a *ton* of followers for posting on this thread. Weird! I think once my programming-related FF activity resumes people will drop from my feed like flies :)
- Eric Florenzano
Too bad I can't tweet the link (yet) -- of this 400+ comment -- I don't know how to call this. Not a Tweetversation by any means. A FFversation? Anyone come out with any sensible terms?
- David Feng
I have some ideas, none of which are usable.
- WorldofHiglet
subscribe to Friendfeeds for Twitter Celebs and read their Twitter hints... Start with Scoble..
- TechMama Beth Blecherman
I see "423 more comments". That's the most I have ever seen so far in FF!
- Winston Teo
TechMama: that will work very well. Of course then you'll only be fed shallow news. The real good stuff is on the K list. They aren't on the bottom, so they have a few followers, but they really don't give a shit so they are very real and teach you stuff. Unfortunately they usually don't stay on the K list very long. They either get moved up pretty fast or they get put in rehab for social media addiction.
- Robert Scoble
What was this thread about? I forgot, AGAIN!
- Jim Bednarz
Jim: me too, it's taken on a life of its own. Oh, yeah, it was about how to make money with friendfeed. Heheheh. Yeah, right!
- Robert Scoble
Quick! Scoble's about to do a 'How to make money on friendfeed' post now. Looking for the hattrick ;~)
- Ed Shahzade /NextInstinct
Ed: heheh. how to make money in friendfeed? Get a million followers. The money will come. Or maybe not. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Robert: I guess you could charge for seminars on how to get a million followers ;D
- Seth Greenblatt
Robert - Think you broke your own record with this one. 255 Likes and 437 comments ?! Guess nobody's embracing Friendfeed tonight :)
- Charlie Anzman
Nobody's gonna read this, but I can't help observing that "I've got 10000 followers" is kinda like saying "I have 1000 books on my bookshelf", as if the number, not the content, is the important thing.
- Mr. Gunn
Charlie .. his last one has 300 comments and over 300 likes I believe ... But this thread is 70 people away from reaching every single person on Friendfeed. (Given the 500 like rule)
- Tyler (Chacha)
ChaCha - Ya gotta love it. Now when he reaches everyone on the Internet ... :)
- Charlie Anzman
Susan - Wasn't ignoring you ... just got lost in the middle of this ScobleChaChaMeMeWhateverItIs ... night all :)
- Charlie Anzman
Most importantly, get followed by @scobleizer hope he retweets, likes and/or comments on your posts.
- Christian Anderson
Christian: that's fair. I keep hoping you retweet, like, or comment on mine! :-)
- Robert Scoble
Yikes, I see there are 442 "collapsed" comments that follow Robert Scoble's teaser! (I won't dare to "expand" them - it would take ages to read them all.) The subject clearly preys on people's minds... Scoble has a knack for hitting the right button!
- Yule Heibel
I wonder if Mobile Safari would have such an implosion that the iPhone would shatter in my hands, if I tried to expand that thread.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
doing video works pretty well too :)
- Loic Le Meur
great, robert, this is *really* pushing the limit :)
- Alberto D'Ottavi
tweet about the size of Robert's ..... =X
- Rachael Depp
whoa comment frenzy! @FriendFeed can you please build a Comment Quality filter before I attempt to make sense of all this user generated erm "content"? Now there's a question: how do we measure Comment Quality?
- Bob Hitching
I was lucky enough to arrive at his 3rd or 4th point... it was amazing to see it happen on the fly, as I and other people jumped in. It was like a chat room or IM chat.
- Simon T Small
Oh, and by commenting a couple of times on this post, I got 36 new twitter followers and about 6 new friend feed followers in 12 hours
- Simon T Small
omg.. why isn´t there a comment link on the bottom as well ? Especially useful on the iphone. I forgot the witty remark that would ensure me thousands of followers by the time I finger-scrolled to the top and to the bottom again on this insanely long thread. Oh, well, at least my comments are seen sometimes.. hello ?

I do like how #1: Stop your bloody begging and whining for followers is still showing though. :-P

This is certainly quite interesting thread. I wonder how many Likes this will get. :D

OpenID question. If someone else knows my identity URL and I'm signed in at that OpenID provider, can they sign in as me on OpenID sites? Or would they need to verify the password for each site?
So even if the OpenID is verified, it still needs another authentification process? ... :\
- Mona Nomura
If you're signed in to your OpenID provider, then anyone on your computer is effectively you. On other computers, no. No different than being logged in with a password to each site.
- Nathan Howell
For each site? Here's the usecase: I signed into to comment on a Typepad blog with my OpenID. It shows my identity URL in the comment. Should I be concerned about people knowing that URL? If someone knows it, could they go to a bunch of Typepad blogs and comment as me since I'm logged into Typepad via that OpenID provider?
- Ryan Kuder
Ryan, my understanding is that the fact that you're signed in is a combination of that URL and a cookie that's been set on your computer. Go to a computer without the cookie, and you'll have to reauthenticate with the OpenID password.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
@Ryan: yes for each site, each time you need to connect to your favorite blogs, website etc. for instance, flickr is now an OpenID provider and your usual url (ie: http://flickr.com/photos/shr) can be re-used as an OpenId url. But.. if you're using it, you'll have to logg on your OpenId secured profiles, sign-in etc.
- Shamir Ramjan
Great. I'll go ahead and comment and if anyone steals my identity, I'll blame Shamir, Tina, and Nathan.
- Ryan Kuder
Your URL is like your username. Totally public, no worries. It's that password you use at the OpenID provider that matters. It needs to be secret and secure. As Tina says, it's required to set the cookie on your computer. Only your computer is logged in, so no, no one anywhere else can impersonate you if you are logged in. Unless, of course, they know your OpenID password.
- Nathan Howell
@Ryan: Blame the OpenID foundation, they need to communicate a lot and explain how the system is easy and secure. Nice challenge for them in 09..

For the past several months I've been comparing Twitter vs. FriendFeed each month when Compete.com updates their stats. For a while FF was dramatically outgrowing Twitter on a month over month basis. Then FF sort of stalled for a few months coming out strong last month with higher growth than Twitter. For November though it would appear that while Twitter barely grew at all 2.3%, FF actually *lost* users, declining -12.6% in unique visitors.
- Thomas Hawk
from Bookmarklet
After gaining significant momentum during October with the upgrade, FF does feel to have slowed down a bit for me during the month of November. Not sure if this is indeed the case or why. What does FF need to do to regain growth?
- Thomas Hawk
Post-election drop-off? People afraid of getting laid off and spending more time working, less time goofing off on FF?
- Mike Doeff
good point Mike. The post election thing could be part of it. But you'd think that this would also affect Twitter who actually grew 2.3% during Nov.
- Thomas Hawk
Maybe the election brought people to FF seeking a place to interact, now that it's over...that political element is all but gone. Just a guess.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
Interesting that FF's decline coincides with their intro of IM. Here's where unique visitors fails. If some power users switched to IM, they wouldn't get picked up on Comscore, nor be measured in any way.
- Karoli
Twitter still showed positive growth but if you compare it to Sep-Oct it looks like it slowed down a little
- Mike Doeff
Good point too Karoli, I personally am not using IM for FF and did not think it's adoption was that substantial. Are others here using IM for FF instead of the web?
- Thomas Hawk
I mostly use IM. I'm not today because my screen is right in front of me, but most days I do use IM.
- Karoli
as a long-time blogger, traffic always decreases during the holidays - people always have other stuff to do

one thought on a way that FF could growis to tap the power of Flickr's "groups." Flickr offers very few ways to track user activity in groups and this is where many of their most active users spend the most time. If you could offer these users a value proposition you could move some extremely active people over to FriendFeed. For starters, if FF could use the Flickr API to track anytime someone started a group thread conversation at Flickr that would actually be fairly significant.
- Thomas Hawk
Twitter is getting huge publicity, FF is getting none, only word of mouth. FF could fix it, with some pretty straightforward positioning and hiring a PR firm to talk to the right people.
- Dave Winer
I'm more likely to use other means of accessing FF since I got my G1 at the end of October. Now posting my mail, FFtoGo, and IM are possible even when I'm not tethered to the laptop.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I'd like to se adoption trends from the same point of origin, so Twitter started year or two before, and may have had a similar adoption trend, as FF since its origin. See what I mean? In a wy we're comparing a more mature service- twitter- to a newer one- FF, and judging them against each other in empiric time when we should be using relative time.
- anna sauce
interesting point Dave. It's not just about building a better mousetrap, it's as much about *promoting* a better mousetrap.
- Thomas Hawk
Thomas, at some level it's all marketing, explaining your product relative to the others. FF has resisted that not because the product can't be compared to the others, it can -- but the company hasn't wanted to do it. If I were in their shoes I'd be all over it.
- Dave Winer
What about Alexa's graphs, out of interest? Although I don't know accurate they are, since they require users to install a proprietary browser toolbar to collect them, if I remember correctly.
- Tyson Key
I do feel like some of the most popular and active FF users, on average, have spent more time on Twitter vs. FF in Nov. than they did in Oct. Maybe they are not and it just seems like they are though.
- Thomas Hawk
Give you an example -- look at how good the rollout of bit.ly went. The service is very good, the programmers do good work, but there was more to it. The feature set was put together to shoot at a position above all the others, as the professional URL shortener. In deciding whether a feature belonged or didn't the key criteria was would a developer want the feature. As it evolves I think you'll see that it is consistent in that way.
- Dave Winer
Anna, I suspect that FF has grown more in their first year than Twitter did in it's first year. Just a guess but it feels right. The question is can FF continue an explosive growth rate from here. What must FF do to continue significant growth and move beyond a niche service for early adopters?
- Thomas Hawk
I'm going to write a piece on The Graphics Gap, that's what FF does that Twitter doesn't. And if I understand the Twitter folk correctly, it's part of their DNA not to go graphic. So it should be a position with some life to it.
- Dave Winer
Dave, why do you think FF has resisted this? Why do you think the company has not wanted to compare it's service to others?
- Thomas Hawk
Tyson, I haven't been using Alexa for comparison purposes here. Might be worth taking a look at. Unless you install Sparky though Alexa doesn't measure Firefox browsers I believe. I'd assume a lot of both Twitter and FF users are not using IE.
- Thomas Hawk
Thomas I have no opinion about that -- I'm a strong believer that if you want to know what someone thinks you should ask them. They're around.
- Dave Winer
Don't you prefer FF cause your photos are visible right there on the page? Look at this item, theres a graph at the top of the page. You could do some of this in Twitter, but there would be no color, no visuals.
- Dave Winer
Yes Dave, as a photographer and as someone who is very visual as a person, I think that the photos add *tremendously* to FF over Twitter. I actually think many people like the imagery here on FF vs. text only on Twitter. A picture's worth a thousand words sometimes and all that. But I think FF is a far superior platform for many other reasons as well and am surprised though that some people try this out and abandon it going back to Twitter full time.
- Thomas Hawk
Pownce had pictures too and they died though. I think FF needs more than just photos to distinguish itself. Maybe you are right and it's mostly just about PR at this point. Or maybe there should be other things that FF could be doing to push growth as well.
- Thomas Hawk
I think the minimalistic way FF has done threaded messaging is huge. Twitter can't compete with that. But I've seen a slow adoption (amongst friends) on FF because of how it's hard to explain. So marketing steps in there, imho. They should hire me.
- anna sauce
Anyone with Hitwise access who can triangulate these numbers? FYI - take a look at the Pages/Visit and Time Spent figures on Compete as well.
- AJ Kohn
Showing my ignorance here -- but where to the numbers charted here come from-- how are they determined?
- Brian Sullivan
I wonder how many FriendFeeders do like I do -- just show up once every week or so to play catch-up? Whereas I have a tab open to Twitter most of the day.
- mark zero (Jason)
For some reason I always enjoy my time more, and get more out of FF than Twitter - and still I can feel I have this idea for some reason, that Twitter is the place I should be hanging out...
- Peter Efland
FriendFeed is growing, I'm about to pass 22,000 followers, but I've maintained since the start that FF won't grow until we get good filtering. When I can say something to the database here like "Show me all items that have Canon in them and that also have 3 likes and 4 comments that have been posted in past 30 days" then you'll see FriendFeed massively take off. I'll bet anyone $100 on that.
- Robert Scoble
I started with Twitter but have found myself spending more time on FF lately and getting more out of it. Twitter's great but it does come down to ability to filter through conversations and FF seems to do that better by keeping comments grouped together making it easier to isolate conversation around a given topic, post, or piece of content.
- Mike Elliott
If anyone wants FriendFeed to grow they could give me a hand. I recognized an opportunity to tie FF into TwiTips Twitter contest, have made multiple posts, personally contacted everyone who responded in any way, and am posting updates here. Any chance any of you might jump on board and support the Top Ten Favorite FriendFeed Friends Challenge? http://www.growmap.com/friendf...
- Internet Strategist
Here are some other ideas: Blog about how you use FF, what it is good for, who you follow and why. Share links to discussions like this over at Twitter and elsewhere. Recommend FF when leaving comments in other blogs when relevant. Start discussions here. Be active in a room here. Perhaps some don't realize yet that every seed they plant benefits their own blogs and Web sites? If anyone wants support in their efforts I'd be happy to assist.
- Internet Strategist
Is FF listening to suggestions like Scoble's about filtering (a few above this one)? There may be cons I don't know about but the ability to "like" individual comments like that one would be beneficial.

I really hope it is just a temp DB error. Even so, for this error I would take off my investment from Twitter and put it in something that really has a future. Maybe identica? You can find me there: http://identi.ca/lemec

a lot of contemporary problems would be solved if we can accept that DNA "DOES" decide certain things. I feel this message needs to get out there. I don't spam... but I think this message is so relevant to a bunch of threads. I took the black hat approach. I am not afraid to do that at times... it is a matter of balance for me. I don't work in absolutes. If I felt that what I had to say was not important to so much that was going on I would demand that you block me. please take that into consideration before taking action.
