I share your fear. I find FF valuable because it doesn't have all the noise of Twitter, the silly apps and bad interface of FB, and people actually discuss things on FF.

It won't be a walled garden forever. An acquisition was the only way FF was going to succeed. It failed to attract a mainstream audience. In the end, I think this is a good move for both companies (although expect lots of bumps before they get it right).

"I read all the time on my mobilew chris but I don't use a feed reader (not on mobile or on the web) I rely on smart aggregators like techmeme, delicious popular, hacker news, newsjunk, etc They work great on my mobile"
- Fred Wilson
Interesting that RSS/readers play no role in your consumption, even if "smart aggregators" are your sources (as I imagine they all have feeds). I assumed (perhaps wrongly) that "reading on mobile = RSS reading," but I suppose there's room for interpretation. What I find hard(er) to believe is that visiting site-by-site (or using browser-based bookmarks) is as responsive as a locally-installed client, at least on a Blackberry Curve.

Call me a luddite, but I find Google Reader on the iPhone such a pleasant experience that it just sucks me in. Perhaps it's that I finally came up with a set of feeds and model for using them that works well.
- Paul Haahr
I don't think there's anything "luddite" about Google Reader via iPhone, you're not the first to sing the praises of that combination. Google Reader is a newsreader (by definition), if it's fast enough to not require a local app, and you're getting the response times you need/expect, then you're set.
