No problem Benjamin, you and Paul opened up a lot of possibilities
- Bwana ☠
APIs are powerful things; FriendFeed (and RSSmeme) both have them and I want more people to understand that it isn't complicated to use them.
- Benjamin Golub
good read though I closed my blog......via feedalizr
- bvs
A lot of folks including myself are intimidated when they hear "API"
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
I never thought the RSS mechanism would work differently with the API. Ignorance I guess. I have some experience working with Twitter and Jaiku APIs and I don't think they did this. I could be wrong.
- Bwana ☠
I just wish there was a general solution to allow everyone to use this great plug-in. I tried having a go to get it to work on my Tumblr blog but it wasn't having any :¬( Good solid HTML widget to add to my CSS is what's needed ;¬D
- CannonGod
Pat Hawks already had a proof of concept for Blogger, I thought?
- l0ckergn0me
I'm working on a php script that merges Friendfeed likes and comments with Disqus comments. Still in early stages, but let me know if anyone would like to take a look (twitter klecu or comment on my blog http://klecu.com/article...)
- Kevin L
When I blogged this (May 28), no Blogger solution existed.
- Bwana ☠
I just went through the process of adding friendfeed to my own site (holgr.com) last week and also found your site. It's a good starting point! Unfortunately the "default" options are pretty scarce and not really flexible. Fortunately - however - the API is so simple that you can create a nice embed yourself using the documentation.
- Holger Eilhard
That photo is mind-numbing isn't it?! wow, what a strange feeling to be standing there in front of that sea of cheering fans! Neat!

Am I the only person who thinks a charismatic leader throwing a Seig Heil salute to a packed crowd in Berlin a little bit concerning?
- Cameron Reilly
from twhirl
I don't think his ass was clenched tight enough for a Seig Heil.
- Tad
So does this make an Obama/Hasselhoff ticket more or less likely?
- Ken Sheppardson
We make the trek to Dublin, TX every year for a supply of Glass Bottled Imperial Cane Sugar sweetened Dr. Pepper. The tour is remarkable too.
- Aron Michalski
You know... there is way too much chatter out there, and not enough "fun-having "... I don't know if I would mind if Scoble gave up blogging ;-) Maybe it would be a LOT quieter, at least if he gave up micro-blogging.
- Ken Stewart | ChangeForge
from twhirl
I don't believe Calacanis. I've known him for a long time and this just didn't sound like him. But, I'm making sure I have a ball. It's why I'm here on FriendFeed so much.
- Robert Scoble
Does it mean something besides "Jason Calcanis wanted some attention today"?
- Jason Carreira
from twhirl
I'm with Robert. It's not over. I think Calacanis is just going through a phase :)
- nononono
from feedalizr
Robert, keep having a ball. That's what's important!
- Elliott Ng
I may just follow Jason's lead. The 14 posts I've written over the past 2.5 yrs or so have really taken a toll. Blogging just isn't that much fun for me anymore.
- Ken Sheppardson
Robert, if activity is an indication of how much fun someone is having - I think you are having the most fun!
- Ken Stewart | ChangeForge
Maybe FriendFeed is popular because blogging *isn't* that fun anymore?
- Sarah Perez
Calacanis isn't blogging for the same reason that a television person isn't. I once tried to sell David Letterman on a promotion system and he laughed his head off at me. He was right. If you have an audience already, why work that hard?
- Noah David Simon
Blogging IS fun. I support more "leading bloggers" withdrawing so Sarah can rise to the top though.
- Louis Gray
$1 says calacanis launches a new blogging platform within the month. Double or nothing says it cures all the ills of blogging today. Just for the trifecta... Tripple of nothing, its part social network

AVG had worn out its welcome. I gave it two in the hat this morning and installed Avira AntiVir. So far, it seems nice. It probably cut 30 seconds off of my XP startup time.
- ha3rvey (wants confit)
i use AVG for 3 years and i have never seen a virus problem. i like it so much..
- Mücahit Yılmaz
I've heard Avast is good, too. I grabbed the Avira Personal Free version just a couple days ago.
- ha3rvey (wants confit)
I'm not really sure how you even compare AV programs. I just snagged Avast! becaus it came up as the primary free alternative to AVG 8.0 (which is no longer free)

Do you people see the details? Look at his knee positioning! The angle of his head! It's exactly the way DV looks when he's addressing the Emperor!! AMAZING
- Mona Nomura
OK-much love for the DV and all the Star Wars characters. Would move to Endor in 5 minutes if those Ewoks would just tone down the chatter some.
- Mark Forman
Thank you. As you can see, Star Wars is HIGHLY personal ;)
- Mona Nomura
Star Wars is serious business, people! Who's your favorite character, Mona?
- Vincent X
wait... what??? i had to triple read that (this was in reference to you never watching star wars btw... I'm a galaxy faaar far away I coded for a brief moment...)
- Mona Nomura
how... is that possible. seriously. i don't understand how you could've never seen star wars =\ ...and vb =\ x987987345
- Mona Nomura
!= means "not equal to" in most languages. however, VB uses <>, which is "greater than or lesser than", which means "not equal to". So, most people use Yoda != Sir Yogurt, while I use Yoda <> Sir Yogurt :)
- Yuvi
i use the greater than less than when i compare.. ie: Original Star Wars > episodes I, II, III
- Mona Nomura
How is putting your hands over your ears censorship?
- Ken Sheppardson
Because Dave isn't putting his hands over his own ears, he's putting them over the ears of everyone who is participating in the conversation. And beside, it's fucking hypocritical to talk about free speech and then hide from Loren by blocking him. He claims he wants to take a stand. Quit running from the person you have a beef with and take a stand. He's just being a coward the way he's acting.
- Tim Finucane
it might be time to tell the story behind what happened at podtech with loren.. re: loren and scoble. shel is acting all innocent but robert went after loren when he did work at podtech and as a result that caused Loren to lose his sponsorship away .shel is roberts partner and has tangled with loren on other occasions...so it was they who went after loren .. maybe it's time to set the record straight on this..
- John Furrier
John Furrier ? the founder of Podtech ? So you know what exactly transpired , why dont you break the ice and set the record straight ?
- Peter Dawson
Getting blocked by Dave Winer is a right of passage on the web. Dave has had some very famous feuds like with Calacanis at Gnomedex or Curry about PodShow. I'm surprised it took him so long to jump in on this one.
- Rob Safuto
take it as a badge of honor.. I know I would
- David Parmet
and just like that John just kicked this little soap opera up to 2.0... man, revenge by puppetry is a bitch!
- Tyler Crowley
Dave Winer is blocking everyone... I just got blocked. hahahahahaha....
- Jason Calacanis
It's good that John is telling the truth. Scoble and Shel got Loren fired... they went after him, and then Loren went after them.
- Jason Calacanis
Thanks for giving the shout out to John, Jason. John Furrier was always good and honest to me.
- loren feldman
In the final analysis, all social media will have been about personal vendettas writ large.
- J T. Ramsay
Isn't it clear why Loren was fired? Wasn't it because of the outrage from the public over his videos the public deemed racist? Had he been at Coke or Microsoft, he would have been fired as well. It continued even most recently with his continued horrible treatment of Julia Allison.
- Mark Lepzig
Remind me not to get on your bad side, Loren. Also, most of the folks commenting on this entry I have not subscribed to yet.. proof that there are different circles of people here on FF.
- Phil G
Yeah, I blocked Whiner a while ago. I don't mind if you disagree with me as long as you respect my opinion. Obvious that Whiner doesn't condone disagreement. So much for embracing diversity...
- John Wright
I actually don't know. All I know is that Denny O'Neil used to use it in the editors notes on Batman comics a lot in the 80's
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
Robert Heinlein - I think it was "Stranger in a Strange Land". A story about a human kid who spent time with Martians (from a Mars colony that was abandoned), and trying to figure out Earth. Martians "grokked" stuff.
- Mitchell Tsai
I think I first heard of "grok" from BoingBoing: inspired me to read Stranger in a Strange land.
- Mark Trapp
Stranger in a Strange Land - Robert Heinlein
- Steven Hodson
Ya'll have it right. Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein, one of my favorite novels. Grok meaning to thoroughly understand and almost become one with, courtesy of Valentine Michael Smith. I often wonder if those who use it have actually read it. Highly recommended.
- AJ Kohn
Yes, but read it a long time ago. Worth another read now?
- Tom Landini
@Tom - short answer ... most definitely
- Steven Hodson
That was the definition Denny always used, though he never gave it's origin. Not many folks I read use the word these days. Glad I had the definition right in my head, though.
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
AJ - one of my favorite novels as well. However, did you ever read the 'unabridged' version? I didn't notice many significant changes or additions.
- Phil G
its an old unix command if I remember correctly ?
- Peter Dawson
@Tom: I don't often read books more than once but I've read Stranger three times. Give it another spin.
- AJ Kohn
@J Phil: Ditto. I have read the 'unabridged' version and like you I didn't notice many changes.
- AJ Kohn
Is there a connect between the book and Leon Russell's song by the same name?
- Russellreno
@Russellreno: I don't know. The title comes from a passage in Exodus, so it might or might not be related. http://bible.cc/exodus...
- AJ Kohn
Stranger in A Strange Land - Heinlein. If you haven't read it, close your browser, run to the library, and find it. Then sit down and read it cover-to-cover. If you have read it, go read it again...B-).

"This tiny puppy may have been born without front legs but there's no way that is holding her back. Hope, the appropriately named two-legged Maltese puppy gets around by using a specially-designed device which features wheels from a model aeroplane. The energetic pup uses her hind legs to boost her body forward onto her chest and operate the wheeled prosthetic limbs."

i showed this to my mom this morning. and waited for the aw factor....think i'll show my sister now. there is something in us that makes us want to help disabled little animals, birds, turtles etc. esp when they are tiny and have big eyes.
- Caroline
any disabled, wretched creature... Gertie... [sniff] <3
- edythe
no need to be sorry, Rap. I don't mind remembering Gertie. Rambn: i guess i meant creature more in the sense of "woodland."
- edythe
Sorry about Gertie, I did not think about that.

So cool that even the sensory-motor brain maps in dogs can adapt to almost any situation. Puts limits on chasing cars, though.

Well I thought it was ugly at first, now I think it's quite stylish.
- Zio Bonino

I agree with alessandro - at first I didn't like it, but now it's grown on me and I think it looks good.
- Nick
Yes this is rather old already. I don't like it, at first I thought why they put the number "8" there. ;-) I think they will return to capital 'G' letter eventually.

Obama is so popular that even previously unflappable reporters want you to know they were once in the same frame as he was. Watching the BBC and Matt Fry did a piece in which there is a completely unneccessary, out of place and abrupt cut to a awkward shot of Obama brushing past Fry - but understandable.
No problem, I did it for myself. I was frustrated at not being able to find rooms. :) I hoped to leverage the power of the crowds to build this bad boy - I'm sure that eventually FriendFeed will do something to make this obsolete, but for at least a short while it could be good. :)
- felix
Thanks everyone! :) It's filled up a good bit in the couple hours it's been public! Charlie, I'm going to look into sub-directories, but want to let it fill up more to see how any sort of sub division ought to look. (and thanks J, for the link to the original! :)
- felix
Thank you. I will add the couple that I created in.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
what if you added a routine to scrape the google search for rooms to prepopulate the list of rooms and then let users categorize them?
- Kenneth LeFebvre
from fftogo
I added most of the rooms I know about. A few errors. Also, I can't change my mind and move a room to a different category. Maybe some rooms do fit in more than one category too.
- Morton Fox
oh, and expose a simple api so someone can make a grease monkey script to add to your directory while creating the room!
- Kenneth LeFebvre
from fftogo
I wonder why this isn't something friendfeed has. They should rip off the irc entirely and allow both public and secret rooms exactly like the irc.
- Doug Brooks
Morton, I didn't make any public admin interface because there's no backup of the BigTable on App Engine and I worried about someone coming in and messing around. So for now, it's just me - if you have things shoot me an IM or so. :)
- felix
Kenneth - hm.. wonder if anyone'd care to greasemonkey that, but it's super easy for me to build, so I'll throw something together for next rev.
- felix
When I see Safari 4 with extensions & greasemonkey for PC, I'll reconsider it :)

Does Safari have extension API yet? I'm also loving the history functions in Firefox that Safari doesn't have.
- jcunwired
Holy cow. That's a lot of comments. Are you guys having as much fun as I am? :-P
- Louis Gray
Safari is an excellent browser, but I'm too tied to Firefox. I have it customized just like I want it, and I run Linux, so Safari isn't an option for me.
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
great job - that was the one thing I was really waiting for from Disqus!
- Frederic
I'm still trigger shy on this Disqus thing.
- David Risley
Excellent! But it looks like it will only pickup Disqus trackbacks and not Wordpress trackbacks -- I'm still keeping the hack I've been using.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
Is really the final version identical to the RC3 and so the version we are downloading is just a set up for the firefox down(load) day
- Stéphane Guérin
Thanks Bwana, struggling with server down for minutes :)
- Dan H. Racek
I've only downloaded the Mac version, but the md5 matches on both FTP and the link I provided above. Mac OS X md5: 27ff7989db6a206cdfc8989aca9f9283
- Bwana ☠
I cant spot much differences between RC3 and the final version
- Palin Ningthoujam
There shouldn't be many differences. But so far so good on my system. Seems a little snappier and uses less RAM than earlier betas.
- Robert Scoble
is there somewhere (or some tool) to check compatibility with your addons? I don't want to have to go to each individual addons page and read the fine print.
- Tim Hoeck
Palin, the final release of FF3 is identical to RC3. No code changes whatsoever; it's the same package.
- Gregory Pittman
from twhirl
Linked to this from RWW - awesome! :)
- Sarah Perez
The welcome page says "Release Candidate 3" after I install from the Mac OS X dmg with an MD5 of 27ff7989db6a206cdfc8989aca9f9283. However, the about page says just "version 3.0".
- Fred Yankowski
from twhirl
The "about" page has said just "Version 3.0" for a while (or at least it does previous in RCs). I can haz actual release and not RC?
- Karim
Shawn, go to http://getfirebug.com. Under releases you can download beta 12. It works with 3. I'm not sure how stable it is, so, as with all betas, installer beware! They claim it to be stable.
- Joel Gray
...getting off topic here, but I've been using Firebug on FF3 for weeks and it's very stable.
- Daniel Shaw
thank you, I can finally download FF3
- Rajiv Doshi
yeah, i've been having a hard time getting the updated firebug for ff3. anyone have an alternative download link?
- Ivan Stegic
never mind, i just answered my own question. firebug for ff3 is available on the ftp servers too, in a different directory. go herE: ftp://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/addons/1843/
- Ivan Stegic
Wow, that link made it much todo about nothing.
- Russellreno
My Mac OS version also has MD5 27ff7989db6a206cdfc8989aca9f9283 - can someone confirm whether it's really final or RC3 (or provide an official confirmation that final == RC3)?
- Chester
For those wondering, the md5 of the Mac OS X download from getfirefox.com and the one I provided above match. Both are 27ff7989db6a206cdfc8989aca9f9283 Those are the official versions
- Bwana ☠
