Kol: That's pretty neat. Wish it was shorter like wave.com or gwave.com (Google owns gwave.com anyway) or something.
- Nick Humphries
i think this @googlewave.com email address is a temporary thing during testing. after it goes live you should be able to just use it with your google account. at least that's what i think:)
- Taylan Aydınlı
if only you could bold an announcement in FF like you can in Wave :D [oh, and my username on Wave is the splendiforously original "adamlasnik"]
- Adam Lasnik
Guys, please read the title and the first comment. This is not a request for invites. This is for users who already have an account and want to share their account name. For invites see this thread: http://ff.im/91M9R
- Kol Tregaskes
My Wave ID is erier2003@googlewave.com. Feel free to add me and we can Wave!
- Eric Geller
Still don't really know what this is (Or Google Voice for that matter). This is like high school all over again. The cool kids are ignoring me!
- James Ferguson
i'm with the google wave woudl be really cool, if i had people to wave at crowd. jviddy@googlewave.com
- Jamie Vidamour
Everyone, read the title and first comment. This is NOT an invite thread!
- Kol Tregaskes
my plan didn't work. still trolling for an invite at dzinrgeek@gmail.com
- amarquart
Blimey. I must be going mad, is it not clear that this is NOT an invite thread. For invites see here: http://ff.im/91M9R
- Kol Tregaskes
Not sure if anyone else woudl find it useful, i'm going to add a load of you as friends and create a wave just to try stuff out in. Feel free to remove yourself from the wave or use it as you feel. Also feel free to add anyone else you think might want to be in on it
- Jamie Vidamour
Shockingly, I am robdiana@googlewave.com
- Rob Diana
Kamilah, you are kamilah.gill. You can find this if you click on yourself in the Contacts sidebar. You address (like everyone) is shown there.
- Kol Tregaskes
Karoli: is that your google wave nick or are you sniffling? :)
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
I'm sniffling because I don't have a google wave nick. Despite two invites, there is still nothing in my inbox. I am not in with the in crowd. :(
- Karoli
Karoli -- It appears as if there's a batch of emails going out now. Keep checking.
- Christopher A Carr
<- Waves hello! :) I'm at holger.eilhard@googlewave.com
- Holger Eilhard
hello holger, can you pls send me invite? fatihkurtoglu@gmail.com
- M Fatih Kurtoglu
Invite came today! I'm jalada@googlewave.com. As part of the second/third 'Wave' of people getting invites looks like I don't get any to share out.
- Jalada
M Fatih Kurtoglu: Sorry, I don't yet have any nominations to give out...
- Holger Eilhard
Hey, I'm in too ! :)) tagyboy@googlewave.com
- fwed
Just got my invite this morning as well. FF embed seems to be working fine. I've tried the Wolfram Alpha robot but didn't get it to work yet.
- François Dongier
librarysupporter@googlewave.com in my wave. :)
- MLx
Glad to see more and more people getting in. What we're waiting for is proper group support (a few weeks hopefully) then let the games begin! :-D
- Kol Tregaskes
Anyone have a spare google wave invite to send to me? email me at zaldor at gmail ! TY!
- Les Zaldor
I will as soon as I get one WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
- Martha
banane@googlewave.com <-- writing this from wave. neat!
- anna sauce
marco.nunez@googlewave - FINALLY! like i said on twitter - i feel like the kid who got a nintendo 1 christmas too late when everyone had already beaten super mario bros!
- Marco(aureliusmaximus)
denise.straessler@googlewave - stupid me had no idea i wouldn't be able to select a different name .....
- denise
Wow. Thanks Kol!!! Here's mine for all ya'll to add - walt.ruppar@googlewave.com - although I just added like 150 of the above. While also deleting my pity pleads for an invite... ;-)
- Walt Ruppar
Am I *that* transparent? :P :) That is a really cool image. I'll give it away... Micah guessed right. I had to use a new technique (new to the sketchbooks, anyway) to capture this image...
- Kamilah Gill
How about a CC (or other copyleft) license so we can use and cite this in presentations?
- Chris Lasher
I guess we now know where some of the Matrix style came from in real life, eh? @Curtiss: That old handle of yours sounds so cyberpunk that I'll probably have to use it as the title of a cyberpunk novel... ;)
- Dennis Jernberg
for me at first glace it looked like the MCP from maybe Tron 2
- Shawn McCollum
It looks like the birthplace of Skynet.
- TrafficBug
@Dennis - In case you weren't aware, the handle Crash Override is from the movie Hackers with Jonny Lee Miller, Matthew Lillard and Angelina Jolie (with Fisher Stevens as the evil corporate hacker and Penn Jillette in a small role as his assistant). Although much of it was ridiculous from a technology perspective, it was still a really fun movie with a fantastic soundtrack (the soundtrack itself actually has two sequels).
- Curtiss Grymala
@Curtiss Grymala - Hackers! great movie! the "Rainbow Books" HA!
- shayne catrett
I'm sorry, it's worse than I thought yesterday. I'm writing a blog about it. Be up shortly.
- Robert Scoble
The people who commented on my blog motivated me. In a bad way. Heheh.
- Robert Scoble
I don't have a google wave account, so can't tell ya.
- imabonehead
I'm letting you first adopters sink your time into it and waiting to hear what you think, before I spend any time with it. Not impressed with what I have heard so far though.
- Jeff P. Henderson
Wanna try it out, but I don't have an invite.
- Mike Dotta
I think it has a bit of a way to go, then I'll love it
- Nicholas Orr
Jeff: it's worth checking out. There is SOME value here, but not as much as the hype made us all believe.
- Robert Scoble
I think Google Wave isn't and won't be a great public communication tool. But it does have potential when it comes to collaboration within teams. In the long run it could give apps like Campfire a run for their money.
- Abhijeet Mukherjee
Would love an invitation. Seems a marketing scheme rther than soft launch
- Mark de Kock
Do we have to comment on GOOGLE WEAVE to call you an idiot? j/k
- RAD Moose
I don't love it - don't hate it - mostly I'm just puzzled as to what the best use cases are & with many of the UI quirks (and I would argue outright errors)
- Shannon Clark
No invite yet. Lots of blog posts saying how it's going to change the world...but then the next sentence is that they haven't tried it yet. ??
- Jesse P. Luna
I finally figured out what I hate about it, though. It's based on email and makes the email metaphor even worse (And slower!!!)
- Robert Scoble
I was in the Dev Sandbox version of Google Wave awhile ago, and it felt like I was in a really out of control AOL Chat room in the early 90s.
- RAD Moose
I don't think I like the public waves, nor do I like being added to so many (testing) waves injudiciously. It's okay for now because I understand everyone wants to test it out, but I would prefer 1-1 or 1-few conversations instead. The best test is to _use_ it for something other than talking about Wave itself :)
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
Mark: it's not incredibly stable yet - so it is very much a dev preview
- Nicholas Orr
Google wave is awesome if only I could get it! Even if I sent an invite request few hours after presentation months ago , still no invite received :(
- Dema
from iPhone
i have an invitation coming, from a friend. however, since it is not here yet, all i can say is their strategy for creating demand and buzz is absolutely stellar. must confess i am not immune, i feel that when my invite "trickles" through, i will indeed be quite fond of it. disclaimer: i have ADD & love noise. a lot.
- (dot)lizard kelly
I'm just starting to get it - but am online with it and very motivated to see if it's as awesome as the Googlers and community believe it is. It's fascinating to say the least, from what I've seen so far. I'm open to connect with others on the Preview via hollingt@googlewave.com
- Tony Hollingsworth
Would love to experiment, was too busy when invite op came by, what's the best way to get one now? Robert, how's the baby? Pics were sooo cute. :) Best, Dave
- dave_blogworld
For such a strong platform, they totally bombed their marketing campaigns. Until you actually play with it, it's nearly impossible to understand what the heck they've created.
- Sean Power
Given the big boom in traffic I got the last two days, Scoble, I assume yours has been immense. Front page of Slashdot, on Der Spiegel, you led TM yesterday. Nice job.
- Louis Gray
Google Wave is mediocre, so it can't neither be loved or hated. Being mediocre is the worst thing you can do since it most often leave people indifferent.
- rick
I can see ways in which it can be beneficial. I just don't see a public social network expanding from it as a service. It will find it's place and loyal userbase. Just like FriendFeed did.
- Mark Krynsky
Though I haven't got invite yet but I still think when it is done and public for all of us there will be a lots of application which will make it more intuitive and useful. well for example twitter is not that much fun without its related apps. is it ?
- Sunny (The Geek Lord)
From the video I couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. So far I can't find an invite, so as of right now I have to totally agree with you
- RickMeasham
from iPhone
I've try it, it seems cool but i need to test more the integration of external contents.
- Roberto Scano
Wondering if it will replace Basecamp and Skype. If I could put those together it would be a major step for our company. Outsourcing to India is all of a sudden very easy because of "Rosy" the translation tool That's powerful. Didn't get a first day invite but look forward to testing it for our organization.
- Brandon
Wave is baby at the moment and not even in beta version. So too early and useful for anything. While studying the protocol, it is indeed very intuitive
- Sunny (The Geek Lord)
Brandon, there are a couple tools to allow conferencing from inside Wave, a gadget from Ribbit and I think Twillio has a robot or something.
- James Williams
If Google is the only wave-server game in town, it'll be kinda lame. They already read all my email.
- Mason Lee
James: To combine the collaborator and the IM client would be big news for us. The promise is there but I still don't know if it's feasible. We will write all the todos and deadlines in BaseCamp and then move to Skype so it can be discussed. Doesn't seem very efficient and Wave seems to be the missing link.
- Brandon
By the way here in Sydney where Google Wave is being developed we've had a couple of user groups at the Googleplex in Pyrmont. See hashtag on Twitter #gwsug - a couple of tweeps worth following are @domesticmouse @pamelafox @purserj @harrisony - they're deep dive and I believe have written a "wave server
- Tony Hollingsworth
I think it's our job to celebrate innovation and shots at leaps forward. It shouldn't matter so much that a product doesn't live up to the hype right now. The original web browser sucked, PINE sucked, my Tandy TRS 80 sucked, my first iPhone was a mess. But now, my email is great, my web browser is fast and full-featured, and my laptop is small and more powerful than ever. The iphone is...
- Morgan
I hate it because... I don't get an invite.
- Jackie
I think the product is too young to tell if it will be understood by user; and we as potential user need some time to understand the possibile uses of the product...I have an account, and I was in the dev sandbox, I think it's a briliant object... but still it's too young to tell.
- andrea
It is a definitely interesting product. However, I need more than 1 other person to have it to see if I really know how it will function.
- beachpig
It's dumb. I had it months ago. totally stupid. Then again, I don't like web based services. I only run desktop apps and despise Google stuff out of totaly control. so wave is dumb. email is better.
- Adam Jackson
Andrea: I agree. I think the robots and gadgets people have developped/will develop will help better define the user experience.
- James Williams
I will tell you what. This is a lot better than using Google Wave.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
for this purpose yes it is - the only way it would happen in Google Wave is if we were all in a group that you sent it to :)
- Nicholas Orr
How does it compare to MS-Office Groove? Not that I've used it, but it got pushed to my work machine, and the explanation of it given by it's own help sounds like what Wave was trying to do too.
- Matthew DeVries
Google Wave seems too bloated... but we will see
- joe
I think GW just takes some gettinmg used to and U need to make sure you kow what U use it for, it is NOT just another new kind of 'multimedia collaborative mail chat'.
- oliver gassner
guess one should differntiate between the WAVE technology (protocol) and what everybody now is moarning about - the collaborative mail chat thing they build to demonstrate its capabilities. Looking back it might have been a good idea to take a well known application to get the potential transportet. but now people are rating this application instead of the technology WAVE which has an enourmous potential! Its push´n´pull on steroids - and thats what makes a difference.
- psanner
Have not tried it, but real time collaboration looks promising. I wonder if it fits the way people are comfotable working
- Michele Costabile
Still waiting for my invite to arrive from google, must be on a slow boat from china
- Daryl Hunt on FF
Has potential for closed groups of people that all use wave. Further adoption depends on integration of legacy systems IMO.
- bishoph
Slower than email, and just, well slow. I'd imagine it'll speed up a bit when 3rd party federation servers take the load off a bit. Even with the quirks worked out, it'll still just as exiting as email. When blogs start integrating Wave THAT's when things will really get started. If they deliver what they're promising it's going to bring about a new generation of social networking.
- Philip
from iPhone
I manage the IT for 5 people. Our biggest problem is making sure everyone sees what they are suppose to see. The idea that I can install Google Wave on a local server, and only have those 5 people in that instance is exciting. The Google Wave you are all trying ISN'T Google Wave, it's a free-for-all test of it the protocols. If you expect it to be another social media site, then you...

- Johnny Worthington
I haven't been able to test it. But shouldn't we all wait before we judge? I mean, it's relative new. I think people will start to find ways of how to use the service in a good way later on.
- Patrik Johansson
Patrik, agree. It's a very early version of a protocol. I think it's an amazing start and has lots of potential. I'd like to see groups added and some control of what waves you are receiving. But don't forget you can use the protocol and place it in your own site, so we can have a FF that looks like GWave. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
This is the Internet, Patrik. It's not about being right, just first...
- Johnny Worthington
Johnny: Hehe yeah you're right:) Kol: If we could use Wave as FF I think it would be awesome!
- Patrik Johansson
I mentioned this on today's show. If I can run my own instance, I could almost create my own 'realtime BBS'. If I could create my own network with just a select group of people (say movie buffs or photographers) to exchange files and talk in real time... WOW. We all go one about social networks controlling what we say and owning our content. If I could set up my own sites, free from rules or ToS... WOW x2
- Johnny Worthington
No comment!! If anyone is generous to send me a free invite, pls send to victed at yahoo.com Thank you :-)
- victed
from iPhone
google wave looks exciting, however the slow release to developers is making other current real-time standards like PSHB and SUP more attractive for immediate building
- Mike Chelen
I have an invite and I've used it somewhat and I suppose I'm lucky I'm not a blogger who adds everyone on earth to every tool that I use in the hopes that I can parse all the noise, because I immediately saw the value in Wave. Rule number 1 of Wave: Don't talk about Wave. Seriously. The second you stop involving yourself in 20 concerrent waves about does Wave work? how is this looking?...

Robert: "I will tell you what. This is a lot better than using Google Wave." is the epitome of what you're doing wrong. Honestly. Stop trying to use it like you use FriendFeed and start trying to use it like you use Google Docs and BAM, you'll see it.
- Chieze Okoye
Chieze: is there anything different or better compared with google docs?
- Mike Chelen
well, the thing that I like about it is that it combines the ease of collaboration of GDocs with the basic (sorta) paradigm of email/IM to improve the conversation part of creating a document. In GDocs, the communication with your colleagues/friends part of collaboration always took a back seat to the creation part. In Wave, I think it pretty successfully melds the two.
- Chieze Okoye
That said, neither facet in Wave independently (communication or creation) is as good as the two tools that exist now (Gmail and GDocs) but combined, it makes a lot of stuff easier. Specifically the kind of email threads centered around a central idea or final product (group report, list of who's bringing what to which party when, etc).
- Chieze Okoye
Love it. Even at this preview stage, I'd hoped for greater control over the Inbox - after all, it's supposed to be "email, invented today" - so, in its current form, it's not ready for mainstream/widestream adoption, but with a bit of polish from the usability experts, it's going to redefine how inter and intra organisation communication and collaboration takes place.
- Andrew Terry
And also, there's tremendous ability to keep Waves on topic (specific tools and actions available to remove thread-jackers and/or their non-sequiturs, add people as they become pertinent, remove people as they become unrelated, etc), instantly provides value to me over emails. There are definitely shortcomings and rough edges, no doubt, but the potential is quite clear when you know where to look.
- Chieze Okoye
Chieze: might address a few gdocs issues- that tracking revisions becomes difficult with many edits, and the lack of a realtime api. interesting, thanks
- Mike Chelen
Yeah, good point Mike, I hadn't even considered the API issue. As far as your first point, the revision part of Wave (playback mode) is already (to me) superior than the one in GDocs in terms of allowing me to follow all the changes that went into a document/Wave. With some more granularity and control (rollbacks, diffs between non-successive states, etc), it will be nigh perfect.
- Chieze Okoye
its not what i expected it to be, not from google, i guess they are mortal too.
- imran
for me it looks like groupware done right. Because it will really elevate in a corporate envirement when there is a office integration and you can make all you're office stuff in a colaborative way with all office products with all mayor plattforms and with people outside the intranet

there is a alternative server called pygowave where you can get a test account. It has not as much features bud you can run it yourself

Does the invite have to go to my gmail address? Or can I get one at M8R-v2hjnm@mailinator.com ?
- Justin Goldberg
can only tell that once my close friends join in...till now just experimenting. From the discussions that i saw till now, learning curve is pretty slack for G-Wave...all the new terms, bots, not to mention the inconsistent behaviour. But then its only a preview.. :)
- Roshan Ramachandran
Still waiting for my invite. It's been two days since someone invited me so they must be really backed up sending them out.
- Mike Doeff
from iPhone
with my limited use of WAVE...huge potential once more extension are built integrating with other Google services and offerings...using iGoogle page to consume information it would be nice to choose items and insert them into a WAVE for collaborative discussion / work related = GAnalytics extension would make it efficient to discuss metrics
- shayne catrett
FriendFeed != Google Wave - I think that's why you're frustrated. You're trying to solve a problem it wasn't meant to solve.
- Jesse Stay
In hindsight, I'd say the biggest problem with Wave is the way they decided to roll it out. If they'd simply given invites to groups of people who actually have a reason to try to work together and collaborate on real projects...rather than 100K unrelated developers/early adopters/pundits... I think much of the unwarranted backlash could've been avoided.
- Ken Sheppardson
Ken, but then Robert would be complaining of why he hasn't gotten a Wave invite yet ;-)
- Jesse Stay
Ken: I use more collaboration software than anyone I know, so I'm pretty qualified to try this stuff out.
- Robert Scoble
Andrew Terry: the problem is that the email metaphor is very unproductive. THAT is what I hate about Google Wave!!! Thank you for identifying it. There are far better metaphors for collaboration. Oh, and I get a lot more done in Google Docs than I ever will in Google Wave. Why? Because documents are a far more productive collaboration metaphor than email is.
- Robert Scoble
Shoot! I wish I had a Google Wave invite so I could try it out for myself! Hope it doesn't take too long to get one.
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
Jannifer: you already have FriendFeed. Wave will make you say "meh." Oh, OK, I can watch you type in real time and see just how bad a typist you really are.
- Robert Scoble
If someone can send me an invitation I'll tell you if I hate or love it ;) napolux@gmail.com
- Napolux
from twhirl
Robert: Yes, having FriendFeed does remove a lot of the wow factor of Wave. The real power is in the apps(gadgets and robots) which besides the featured gadgets is uncharted territory.
- James Williams
I'm dying to get my hands on it. Everytime I get a new email I'm hoping it's my invite
- Mark Hendy
Robert: But don't we have to find a replacement for FriendFeed? FriendFeed is the best, but how long will it be here? :-(
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
I think Wave has a story for FF's threaded comments(IMHO it has a story for most of FF). What it needs is roles on a Wave so that I can allow ppl to reply to a blip that was created from one of my social media actions yet disallow them from deleting anything but their comments/replies. Also being able to have my "personal social media wave" be updated when I comment on someone else's "social media wave" would be nice so I that all parties can own that interaction.
- James Williams
Am I the only one who is SERIOUSLY concerned about the power Google has over our lives and businesses? Do we really want to keep giving them more and more access to what we do? I know they can compile it anyway but we can at least not make it so easy for them. I have had access to dozens of Google Analytics accounts. When Google is responsible for 50-70% of the traffic and 50-70% of the...

I don't love it or hate it. It's still smoke and mirrors until we get a chance to put our hands on it. It has potential, for good and for bad. How we use it will determine which prevails. Until we use it, it's just a phantasm.
- Ken Camp
Hard to say since no one has actually seen it yet.
- Glen Campbell
I have not used it, but I have a question - Should Google have waited little longer to polish it? because if people don't like it or they don't get invites they are likely to forget it ? If Google wave was from other company say xyzwave, people would not have created such a hoopla. To Non-geek public :What I am feeling is that majority of people don't have any idea what Google wave is and those people are likely to complain without fully understanding it.
- ashish
Reviewing Wave now is like reviewing the iPhone without any apps. It's just a platform.
- Steven Cains
It's the frame of a house that could be quite something.
- Aron Michalski
you're an idiot lol jk ;) however the whole debate has got me thinking about how i use twitter and i have decided to change my approach cheers! twitter(at)locspoc
- Loc
I'm certain I'd love Google Wave if: a) Google thought I was cool enough to have it; and b) I had it.
- Karoli
Robert: Have you tried wave out with any of the Building43/Rackspace folks on project work? A team of 3 or 4 people or so? Anything work related? I'm not trying to be snarky, I'm genuinely curious how it's worked out for you when it's with a group tying to create something collaboratively vs general tire kicking stuff.
- Ken Sheppardson
I think Google Wave is going to be one of those Google products that never really takes off.
- Steven (optionshiftk)
I think I should at least try it before forming an opinion, and since nobody has saw fit to invite me, I can't do that at this time. I think your request for opinions is a bit to early for most of us.
- April Russo (app103)
I'm still waiting for someone to invite me. But from what I'm seeing wave is more like a framework for people to build upon, not a user application itself.
- Sung W. Lim
@Sung - that's basically my conclusion as well (http://macrolinz.com/macroli...) and a few people seem to agree with me that the beta is really more about figuring out what the UI should actually be for that framework than just polishing the UI they currently have. Most people are too caught up in the hype though and don't know what they're looking at and so get disappointed pretty fast.
- Her Lindsay-ness
+1 to Lindsay. Also, there will be many UIs but it will take time.
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
Robert, far from idiot, but you really surprised me Thursday (too fast & decisive), digesting the new post.
- Majento
I'm bullish. It seems like a lot of noise now, but when I saw the demo I saw how much more useful it could be for certain types of communication.
- Adam Loving
Option #3: Did you not get an invite to Google Wave?
- Michael Pinto
Would love to express an opinion but didnot get an invite even though I applied some time ago a bit sad being as I live in Australia and Wave is being developed here.
- Daryl Hunt on FF
I would comment Robert but as I didn't get an invite to Google Wave, I can't.
- Sandra Large
Even if you use it for its intended purpose (collaboration among a pre-selected group of people), Google Wave still needs a lot of work.
- John E. Bredehoft
You should do a public wave with this question, and add the poll extension so people can vote and comment at the same time
- Jesse Stay
Tag me when you do though so I know you did it. :-)
- Jesse Stay
like, want to try more usual conversation stuff before being sure, but like the embedding, sharing, etc
- immaterial
Robert, thanks for opening the discussion. I really would like to read about more evidence and facts about the experience, rather than opinions without a foundation or whining about not having it.
- Luis Valdes
+1 Sung and Lindsay. Actually, this isn't even a beta, it's an alpha preview.
- Chieze Okoye
If you try to use wave as a replacement for facebook, twitter or friendfeed it's not going to work. Lots of people want it to be the revolution in social media when in fact its aimed more at private communication. as a way to communicate between a few friends it's fantastic although it still needs some work. Just remmeber its a replacement for email and im
- Jamie Vidamour
I'm using it and like it. Yes, it needs work but the potential is there. I like that I can add apps to it and that I can use it with some of the same tools in basecamp.
- Johann Lohrmann
It's okay Robert and has potential especially for collabortory working together. However, whether or not the general public is going to drop e-mail and IM and use this instead is a moot point, as its not easy to 'suss out'
- Sandra Large
@Sandra I don't think the basic useage is any more complicated than email, people probably just need to have their hand held through a simple example conversation with one or two others & they'll be able to use it - public waves & advanced features can come later if needed
- immaterial
Real time behaves like a voice conversation. if you make a mistake, it's out there immediately, but so is your ability to correct. I can see the risk, but the potential benefit is intriguing.
- Kevin Arth
So the question is... wouldn't it just be faster to call someone instead of watching them type?
- Louis Gray
I am having to train myself not to interrupt people when I see them typing out thoughts. I'm bad at that in real life as well.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
call yes, as further extension are developed which will hopefully produce more dimensions of collaboration, complex ideas/thoughts/processes/discussions will be effortlessly digested and distributed?
- shayne catrett
@louis yea that's why you have video conferencing built into wave :)
- andy brudtkuhl
So it's not for the faint-hearted...I can see users being overwhelmed at first...it took me a while to get used to ffeed with the real-time feature...then I learned to use lists...perhaps google wave will provide that soon?
- brainno722 (Peter)
I like the real-time type... reminds me of my BBS days. You can get a lot of emotion through when you're typing in real time that doesn't show when you're just reading finished notes... much like face to face conversation. That's an element that has been missed in most of our online communications since the WWW came about. As for the phone, some of us are more comfortable typing than talking. I know I am. My brain is in my fingers.
- Her Lindsay-ness
I think Wave should just be called OMFG.
- phil baumann
It's pretty cool. It's clearly not a 1:1 email replacement but much more. To get the most out of it.... it's going to require a shift in approach. I don't buy Scoble's take that its hype. It's new and has rough spots, but the productivity issues will be smoothed over as the overall community develops tools to make it more productive. It's a great start.
- Jim Goldstein
@louis the realtime typing seems to be more of en eye candy function but in the right situation could be handy particularly in a collaboration discussion.
- Jim Goldstein
Holden, although I understand your spirit there... how does the extra $100 change your life? In my opinion, $200 is the same as $400 in the same way that $1700 is the same as $2100. Do you work five more hours at your job or 10 more? It's non-consequential. What makes the difference is does this become something you need, and will you pay for it?
- Louis Gray
Goes from a no-brainer at $200 to a "ehh... do I REALLY need it?" at $400.
- ronin
I like it--moving us closer to the world where paper is quaint, antique, a hobby. The problem with the price moving ever higher seems to be that it starts to enter the realm where one could just buy a little laptop. Why this and not that?
- Kathy Fitch
Louis: It is something I would like to have, maybe need (the main computer I run on is 6 year old e-machine, thank god I don't do much more than chrome). But $100 more is consequential for me, I am 17 and work on a regular basis for minimum wage that barely covers my phone bill and insurance/car payment.I could get a really nice netbook for this price that adds a lot more value and is nearly as portable.
- Holden Page
I agree with both points. $200 is the sweet spot although they'd probably hemorrhage losses for a while. But $400 isn't a terribly large chunk of change when it comes down to it. Think of the Kindle. That only does print material (and a small selection at that) primarily. This does web only. The web opens a lot more opportunities than a book reader.
- Zach Flauaus
It has nearly doubled in price since its beginning stages, granted though, Arrington never said that the price would be at $200 indefinitely, he clearly stated the price might vary.
- Holden Page
And as the price keeps going up, it's going to have to be something really special if Apple really are unleashing the iTablet soon... #Inevitable-iTabletComment
- Andy Bold
$400 means it's competing with netbooks and low-cost notebooks - a crowded market if ever there was one.
- invariant - farewell FF
Wow. $400 dollars is outrageous. And I am going to assume that some idiot will forget about Canada?
- Zachary TG
as previous post on this item "if i can casually throw this in a backpack WITHOUT the screen getting F.U.B.A.R., then me wants one very much! - You (edit | delete)....price not a factor if that is solved.
- shayne catrett
buy the time it gets to market like when? October, the rumoured apple table will kill it STONE DEAD.
- Weird Shanghai
msi already has a tablet out in akihabara japan, i looked at it today it is slightly smaller, but has a keyboard. same price
- Robert Higgins
Looks nice, but I *knew* they were never going to hit their price points. Although I guess it's good to set really hard goals.
- mikepk
I love the "the rumored apple tablet will kill it" stuff. Does anyone remember how long Apple's been rumored to be about to release a slate/tablet/umpc/netbook/tablet PC?
- Joel Bennett
I would like one, but US$400 is NZ$700, so if Apple tablet comes in at rumoured US$800, then NZ$1400 is way out of most peoples league - hate it.
- Geer
I'm a bit surprised of no Bluetooth in the specs. The lack of BT for keyboard and A2PD plus the price hike really has limited my lust for this device.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
$400 USD is to top of the price point that I believe most people will be willing to pay for a device that will be used to surf the web while watching TV. As any new product, including the yet to be announce Apple iTablet, the price will go down after the initial release and the TechCrunch gets some of its R&D back. I wouldn't be shocked to see the price drop to $350 after 3 or 4 months.
- Casey Russell
ronin said it best (3rd comment) "Goes from a no-brainer at $200 to a "ehh... do I REALLY need it?" at $400"
- Chris Heath
Remo, to be fair, the crunchpad is designed to be held. Having USB cords in the way really hampers the way the design is intended to be used. I experienced this experience with the Raon Everrun.

Don't you guys think that this information, altough not essential, should have its place in the bio? Think of geolocalized friendfeed, for instance. Quite not possible yet.
- Zackatoustra
I am speaking to UCLA MBA students about the 2010 web. Will be interesting to see what they think is happening in business because of it. More: - http://ourdoings.com/roberts...
I also wonder how they are using social networks like Twitter, Facebook, and FriendFeed and will demo FriendFeed to them. What would you tell an MBA student?
- Robert Scoble
I'd tell them to read Steve blank's blog entry about becoming an expert in an area, then learning the business skills necessary to run "in a technology company it’s usually better to train a domain expert to become a marketer than to train an MBA to become a domain expert. " the post: http://steveblank.com/2009...
- Mark Essel
Most of the students are doing sports marketing.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
I'd be interested to know if they use Twitter or other microblogging services. There's been a lot of talk among the youth media and education community that teens and college kids don't use Twitter.
- Derek Baird
I'd suggest that they closely track the journals (blogs, etc.)in their particular areas that deal with IT. For instance, I've found Healthcare Informatics to be absolutely invaluable--it not only gives me a sense of how leaders in healthcare are using things like social networking, but also gives me best practices to point to when I'm making the case for introducing new features or exploring new territory.
- Kathy Fitch
If they're doing sports marketing, they should look at cricinfo.com and of course espn.com - great way to drive engagement with fans, through detailed content
- Aaman (Clone of FF)
it would be interesting to see what they think about leveraging these social media tools in today's business; and what there opinion for social media and business a decade from now.
- esaarem
You're up on screen now. So behave! :-)
- Robert Scoble
Word travels even faster now, so companies need quick response to PR incidents.
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
the 2010 web will be made of web sites that act like twitter and facebook, with a scannable "river of news" as the landing
- Brian Hendrickson
As an example, it won't be enough for a sports marketer to stay on top of what mass media say about a team or athlete. They have to stay on top of opinions spreading through social media.
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
The main thing is that "2010 Web" concerns can not be an afterthought or an add on--this is where content lives now, so IT literacy, comfort, and confidence are absolutely essential, and awareness of online relationships and positioning must be constant. That said, it's not enough to chase every fad and fashion. A larger sense of goals and purposes is key, and online moves should be thought out carefully.
- Kathy Fitch
Striking a balance between comfort with the emergent nature of the thing and recognition that you can influence the direction of that emergence--that's key.
- Kathy Fitch
make sure your social efforts have clear ROI
- shayne catrett
Probably need to expand your definition of ROI, though. Sometimes, fear of the flow of information (when it's trending negative, as it will) leads to poor decisions. So, there's the unintended consequence to consider. Case in point, the property management company in Chicago that is now infamous for suing a Twitterer whose negative tweet would otherwise have gone almost totally unnoticed. They could have taken that tweet and turned it in the other direction quite easily (and no doubt far less expensively).
- Kathy Fitch
great email! best take away from it was "Chapter three will be the two-horse race of Microsoft and Google, with the inevitable emergence of a third and fourth player." .....IMO my $$$ is on Mahalo....rapid innovation....and all the other ingredients are brewing with them!
- shayne catrett
My vote for a "third" player will be one of the social media sites, the one that winds up being the site where everyone converges. I don't know what that will be yet - they all have advantages and disadvantages.
- Trent Hamm
I certainly share concerns regarding tweet to win that co-opts users into marketers & spammers. It concerns me to see users bemoan the explosion of spam auto followers but naively see little wrong in generating excessive tweet to win posts themselves.

Happy Birthday 2 ME! This guy is the exact same age as me: http://www.joeltudor.com/ - click Bio link, found out down in Costa 1997......so question to my FF subscribers.....tell me what other things have happened on this day 06-11?
Yesterday I went surfing, thanks Luke Kilpatrick for taking me out in huge waves. It’s not as easy as it looks and I’m sore today. Oh, and this is a test of FriendFeed’s email feature. I just sent this to share@friendfeed.com and we’ll see if it goes up.
- Robert Scoble
from email
so where is your iphone and video camera crew :p
- Darren Stuart
If the yo dawg memeage wasn't DEAD <wink> there would be a surfing while you surf thing going on here =)
- Micah Wittman
Darren: this was taken with Luke's Palm Pre. Who needs an iPhone? OK, I'm outta here. Just needed a quick hit of Real Time web to keep me going. I was starting to twitch there for a second. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Tibor: it will only work properly if you're sending from on of the email addresses that you have on file and verified in your FF account. Double check and make sure you it was the correct address and that the same address shows as 'verified' in FF.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Robert, try sending a voice memo to share@ from your new iPhone. The quality is amazing and it attaches in FriendFeed, just like photos. I'm told soon they'll stream straight from here as well.
- Jesse Stay
Appears to be a longboard, has a wood laminate look.
- JimmyJet
Tina: Thanks, but i did check that. Used two verified addresses of mine, none of them worked. Strange.
- Tibor Holoda
Cool, don't give up, surf every day you can. You will love it!
- Eduardo Sasso
That's a nice ride! And lol @ thinking any surfer would take a newbie to Maverick's. I doubt I could even swim out to the break at Maverick's, let alone ride any waves, but scoble's more badass than I.
- Lo
Nice! I just came back from my first lesson in Pacifica, loved it!
- Yousef
Robert! So this is like twitpic for FriendFeed? Yahoo! I gotta get this set up on my CrackBerry for the weekend! Mahalo dude! Enjoy the waves and keep practicing... for Hawaii!
- Arleen Anderson
Nice going! Open invite next time you're in Santa Cruz. We have a geek "dawn patrol" that goes every Friday morning before work.
- Peter
The board is a 9'4' Jeff Hakman, Hawaiian Pro Design, it is a wood veneer, but real wood none the less. It is a Surftech epoxy wood series. Check it out - http://www.surftech.com/tech... - I took Robert out to the Half Moon Bay Jetty, it was supposed to be small but a great south swell hit at about 6pm. I tell the whole story here http://www.lukek.ca/?p=348
- Luke Kilpatrick
Peter: I would love to join the geek dawn patrol in SC, I try and surf SC once a week. Mind sending me a dm with details? I will do my best to bring Robert as well.
- Luke Kilpatrick
I think that it is a Hakman board and a sweet one at that. :-)
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Well I'll be darned, I thought from the pic it was a classic board. Thanks for the link and info Luke.
- jcunwired
Rumor is (read it on TMZ) that the board in the pic is a short board.
- Jack (a.k.a. Jeber)
Mathew: My mistake, the name is usually so covered with wax that I misspell it. I love this board and it seems to be the one in the photo of every person I take surfing with me, I think I have about 6 different people in the same pose as Robert with that board.
- Luke Kilpatrick
Nice board, wetsuit and booties Robert - but Luke says you have a big stick, whats the connection?
- Geer
Geer: Surfing has its own language, that has never really been fully captured by the mainstream. A stick is simply a surfboard, a big stick is a long board (aka a board over 9ft). A common phrase is "wax up the stick and go catch some swell" which to many non-surfers wouldn't mean much but to a surfer its the best part of the day.
- Luke Kilpatrick
Geer: Sorry, didn't look too closely at your profile, Awesome waves! The ones at the Princeton Jetty last night were close to head high and closing out hard, those look just perfect overhead with nice offshores. Jealous! Send some of that swell, water and winds to CA please. @surfergrrrl, one of my best surfing buddies is goofy foot and insanely jealous that you NZ guys have Raglan. There isn't a left point break here of any quality for hundreds of miles. Santa Cruz is land of the right.
- Luke Kilpatrick
Awesome Rob, the bit Rackspace hosts performs perfectly and the part it doesn't fails epically ;)
- Mark
There is an account waiting for the taking their Robert. I remember the Apple coverage, the pages loaded INSTANTLY even with millions of users.
- Mark
YES! i heard of Arrington surfing on his vacation to Hawaii....now @scobleizer ! Hell yeah...glad you had fun...hopefully this catches on as it is very therapeutic ....Surf off between tech leaders!
- shayne catrett
Luke: Be happy to take you out in SC. @ replied you on Twitter too
- Peter
They are probably looking at the vast amount of 'gray space' at FF. Will ad's be there someday?
- Mike Nencetti
:rant on: Marketing makes me laugh. It is always marketing firms that tell you whether marketing is effective or not. Yeah like someone who's entire business is marketing or marketing analysis is going to be straight with you. It is akin to asking someone "Hey is your job necessary?" :rant off:
- Geoff Schultz
Geoff, do you think social media people are frank about the role of social media?
- Cristo
Eh with everything there is a fair amount of "drinking the kool aid" but that is to be expected. The difference is that Marketers "role in life" is to make something appear more valuable than it is. So one should consider the source in terms of that.
- Geoff Schultz
In all things there are good marketers and bad marketers but make no mistake, just having a good product doesn't mean it gets adopted. Marketing ensures that good products win. It can also help to make them appear more valuable or better in comparison, but it *is* a critical component to success.
- AJ Kohn
So, 12 minutes after the original post, I think "how many?" just increased by "a bunch" ;)
- Andy Bold
No Geoff, the marketer's role in life is not to lie. It's to communicate.
- anna sauce
your marketing is only as good as your tracking and analytics...ask for case studies and real numbers...
- shayne catrett
To your point, though, Robert, colleague of mine (a marketer!) had a testy conversation with some corporate marketers defending Twitter and responding to consumer issues. They just didn't get it. Few hours later one of them came by and admitted she didnt' get Twitter, and had been burying her head in the sand, and would make a new effort. It's a slow growth for some, and tools that are many to many seem very daunting, especially to those in the communication business.
- anna sauce
shayne: Robert Rose, of CrownPeak just said that on stage and he's showing off a lot of good stuff along those lines.
- Robert Scoble
Who said lie? One can easily alter perception without lying. But that doesn't necessarily mean it is the whole truth either.
- Geoff Schultz
Marketers tell a story that people want to believe. That's not lying. But it does mean that you might stitch things together, leave things out etc. Fiction sometimes has the ring of truth. I'm not a big Seth Godin fan but his 'All Marketers Are Liars' is a good example of how this works.
- AJ Kohn
Please don't invite the PR hacks to FF, I want to keep it as organic as possible before people start trying to figure out ways to game the system.
- Davis Freeberg
Davis- I like your idea that this tool is pristine.
- anna sauce
I just searched for myself. It popped up with my home address and phone number - and convenient directions to my house. I find this a little disturbing.
- Amy℠
what on earth are you doing on a ship rob?
- David Lloyd
what is your job Robert? i mean, your title, what do you do for a living. I don't mean blogging or twittering. What do your employers pay you do do?
- David Lloyd
Mark: you can see photos of what I was doing on the ship: http://www.flickr.com/photos... (We were visiting as part of a blogger embark that Guy Kawasaki arranged).
- Robert Scoble
ooo how cryptically exciting, cannot wait! I wondered what you were up to travelling all over the world.
- David Lloyd
What do I do for a living? I tour the world interviewing business and tech innovators. Rackspace is paying me to do that because we're building a community of people who are fanatical about the Internet. Really why I'm paid is because I have relationships with many of the people who are building the most interesting web sites. Rackspace hosted YouTube before Google bought them. We are looking for more of those.
- Robert Scoble
Happy Early Birthday. Imagine how cool it would be just do take a few days and go and hang out on a big ship? Shame the pesky real world has to go and spoil everything :p
- David Lloyd
I blame spymaster...they need the firehose!
- Nicholas James
SO is the hope that some of these big upcoming websites might consider using rackspace in the future? You kind of are recruiting big accounts?
- David Lloyd
I love how they called it a "fatal" software error.
- David Lloyd
I also love the real-time updates on FF. When Google Wave comes out we will be able to see each other typing this nonsense in real time character by character!!
- David Lloyd
Mark: Unless you hide the character by character option ;)
- Nicholas James
Time Warner is spinning off AOL (finally)..... but, no, no big news.....
- Roberto Bonini
@Roberto Arrington hasn't been too keen on AOL in his posts, so I don't think he would qualify the spin-off (which we all knew about anyway) as "very very big news." He's choosy with his words.
- Sam Harrelson
Doesn't seem like anything too big or unexpected came up. I wonder what Arrington's comment was all about?
- Kevin Carey
Big news is coming in 1 hours 6 minutes.
- David Lloyd
+1 Kevin: should we expect a "big day with news", or "a day with big news"?
- Jérôme Flipo
so there goes cotweet and the others? this is one of the hard parts about opening up to developers like they have - and what i've said all along - building a business completely on twitter (or on any other biz) is a mistake and will lead to very upset people
- Allen Stern
Yeah, good point Allen...it's a shame because cotweet is pretty darn impressive. Maybe a possible acquisition target...or if Twitter is planning on offering basic business tools, cotweet could be on a more advanced level. Who knows. But your right, it's a dangerous game building business tools on top of Twitter.
- Zee.
Maybe they'll add the brand new, breakthrough, game-changing feature known as "Comment Threading" *rolls eyes* Die Twitter Die srsly EDIT: I say that as a heavy (frustrated) Twitter user myself
- LANjackal
business tools = follower / messaging management and reporting service...
- shayne catrett
@Shayne probably, but analytics is apparently high on the cards too
- Zee.
Johnny - There's closer to 6.8 billion people on earth
- Mitch
Allen, users will benefit from competition. Cotweet and all other can have unique features and stay. Zee, agree on analytics part. +I'm sure we will get DM spamming tools.
- Sasha Kovaliov(.com)
I'm sure they will find willing customers. So many people depend on Twitter to market their businesses and blogs these days. I know several people who are ready to pony up just so their profile backgrounds can have clickable links.
- Peggy Dolane
Hopefully, twitter will be dead by then, or at least morphed into something more useful for more people.
- Kittyburgers
See, this is why we can't have nice things :p Seriously, Matt is right. When you just do your thing the followers come, why bother growing them artificially?
- Neal Jansons
Stupid "one word to explain everything ;) "
- Ahmed
The whole followers number thing has gotten out of hand. I'm still more interested in learning from the people I follow.
- Mary Wehrle
Followers are not all that important. It is more rewarding to follow the right people and know how to search twitter for information, as best as you can. Twitter could do with some more metadata for each post.
- Lennart Olsen
Seriously, it should be about HOW MANY followers you have, it should be the QUALITY of the followers you have. Are they REALLY listening?
- Sherra Scott
Lennart: you and I know that, but Twitter is now mainstream and those users don't really participate in Twitter. Look at Oprah. How many Tweets has she done? How many people is she following? Not many. And the new users of Twitter look up to her. So they will emulate her behavior.
- Robert Scoble
For most of tweeps quantity matters not quality. As in their real life I suppose :)
- Jacque
Did a social media marketer just suggest it's about quality and not quantitiy? whaaaa?
- Eric Nakagawa
i wouldn't want all that noise. twitter gives me access to people i want hear from but normally can't. and friend feed lets me talk to them... at a distance
- Marco
Robert: I agree with you completely. Twitter has become like the "Alternative" music on the top 10 songs in iTunes.
- MλTT
why eat vanilla (twitter), when you can have any flavor you want (FF)? Once twitter became mainstream (i.e. the celebrities killed it) it started to dumb down.
- Bob Blunk
Surely targeted Twitter followers is much more effective than random large quantities?!
- PRBristolco.uk
Robert: True true. Having a large number of followers is beneficial of course for getting help with things, but... Maybe if people start using the saved filters on twitter.com they will realize it is better to reach those who are interested instead of everyone who is not.
- Lennart Olsen
Some guy called Peter Parker (PeterParker01_) seems to be using it a lot - does this mean Spiderman gone over to the dark side?!
- Kate
there's a lot of 'chatter' in that search query about TwitterHIT being a virus... anyone else think so too?
- Chris Heath
It's hard to see how twitter will control this spammyness. It's all about quality, not quantity. A large following is useless if you can't get them to ACT.
- Jonathan.Rivera
I agree, what ever your uses of twitter, it's about quality. Take an example - there's no point in a feed for local news in Bristol UK having followers outside Bristol, as the news would be irrelevant to them - so why would they want to just amass folllowers?? And what value would someone from California into holistic therapy (for example) get from following that news feed anyway?
- Nigel
Nigel: one reason is that directories like http://www.wefollow.com are using follower numbers to decide on relevancy. That might even be important to someone inside Bristol.
- Robert Scoble
even though i don't get many requests....i enjoying blocking twitter accounts the best! i save the email confirmations i get then if your not interesting BLOCKage
- shayne catrett
Twitter is as much about listening, if not more, than talking. For me out on the frontier a Wyoming, a nobody really, being able to see Robert Scoble's thoughts, as well as those of Chris Brogan, Guy Kawasaki, and so many other big idea guys, is like being welcome in their home to see what they're reading, watching, listening to, doing... heck they even engage in conversation with me...
- shelli johnson
It's rifle vs. shotgun. I'll take a rifle please.
- shelli johnson
Nigel - how about "home town news"? I follow local news from places I used to live, even though I haven't lived there for years.
- Will King
Lol, this is funny! what is the next thing going to be What about promises like: Follow me and I make sure that 1000 follows you
- Asgeir
The nirvana of being followed. In my case, if you want to follow me, knock yourself out. Doesn't mean I have to do anything about it, except block spammers, from which I derive a weird pleasure.
- Rachel Clarke
This is totally stupid, I agree. What is also stupid is all of the fake followers the celebrities have. This might be all the greatest ever episode of Punk'd!
- Bo Lora
I just got more than 2000 followers, now I can also follow more than 2000. And I can tell you it's fun! Of course you can't see all the tweets, but who cares… In this way I have the chance to find interesting people, and when that happens I put their tweet feed in friendfeed. Give it a try...
- Jacob
Even the bots are stupid. No picture, no description and no link in the bio? Huh, why the hell would someone follow that?
- Patrick Moorhead
Jacob: now you know why I find friendfeed fun. You can follow how ever many people you want. And you can even put them into separate lists!
- Robert Scoble
It's a shame when so many people totally miss the real value of twitter.
- Angela
Angela: well, Twitter itself caused that through the systems they built, the actions they took, and the PR they sought. Ask yourself, why is Oprah's account recommended while Leo Laporte's is not? Twitter WANTS you to miss the two-way nature of things. They don't want you to see Twitter as some place you're going to learn something. They are building an entertainment broadcast network. It's too bad, yes, but that's what is. Which is why I'm here instead of there most of the time.
- Robert Scoble
Leo Laporte, give me a break - he has one of the most recognise names out there. I know you love being on the Twit show, but come on :)
- Asgeir
@Asgeir Only started following Leo in the past week or so... and only because Friendfeed exposed me to him, his show and some cool conversations.... Thanks again Robert Scoble.
- David Damore
What do you get out of Twitter? It should be worth something. It should always be about quality. Whether you receive it or supply it.
- Wilfredo Guerrero
Do I put twitterhit into search at twitter? When I try to click link posted it does a search of search here on FF. (I am on nambu app for itouch)
- Brytne
from Nambu
I wish that there was a wefollow for friendfeed
- Thomas Hawk
It seems that nobody on Twitter (at least those who use this service) realizes that tools like these go against the idea of social networking, which is to find people of a similar interest.
- Thomas Ward
@Brytne Just click link in Robert's post, should open twitter
- Asgeir
That's what I am saying, it isn't opening anything other than searching the term search here in FF. Guess I don't get to play this game.
- Brytne
from Nambu
@Brytne That is strange - you could also just type TwitterHit into the search field in twitter to see
- Asgeir
@asgeir thanks, think it is the app I am using.
- Brytne
from Nambu
Totally agree. What is the point of the numbers if no one cares who you are?
- Kathryn Martyn
Site declares they aren't a scam, but requires your password for twitter, um no thnx. I dislike all those twitter spinoff sites.
- Brytne
from Nambu
Lets not pretend that friendfeed is perfect in this game, Kim Kardashian is subscribed to my feed, why? These tools are imperfect, worrying about who has more followers, subscribers, recommendations and why is pointless.
- Patrick Boegel
Patrick, she may be following you because you follow her on Twitter and she did an auto-import. If not, she is hoping you will follow back. And notice that on FriendFeed, less than 1 percent did follow her back.
- Louis Gray
Louis: definitely not following Ms Kardashian, just not my thing. Only reason she is not being followed back yet on FriendFeed is that migration has not occurred at any reasonable scale yet.
- Patrick Boegel
I un-followed someone yesterday who used that TwitterHIT crap. Not the kind of person I want to be following anyway, if all they want is more followers.
- Rochelle
One last point, by the numbers maybe 7-8% of the US population is using Twitter (per compete.com) it is a mainstream "name" but not a mainstream tool yet.
- Patrick Boegel
@Patrick, @Louis I think Ms Kardashian is following everybody. I don't think it is because she is so interested in what everyone is up to, but rather to promote herself as a model. Is this the right place to do it? I don't see it
- Asgeir
I found the whole "follow" experience on twitter odd to begin with. Case in point, yesterday I declared I needed to find my toenail clippers and lo & behold the LA Clippers started following me. What are they, a basketball team? I don't even know. Definately a fail. These sites are just a scam. (and now I leave this thread for fear of bothering people)
- Brytne
from Nambu
Asgeir: I get why she is following everyone to promote herself, I just don't think it matters, and people using silly follower "schemes" and devices to grow a list of followers based on no real strategy, well they will either drop off of Twitter quickly because they get bored and didn't gain anything by immediately having a Twitodex of 5,000 strangers they shared nothing with. Or they...
- Patrick Boegel
@Brytne That is funny. I think a lot of users use search to find people to follow.
- Asgeir
@asgeir thanks LOL I got quite a chuckle (as did my sports fanatic little brother) out of it. And I get that about the search and have done it myself. But I look at the content of the user before I deem them worthy of a follow.
- Brytne
from Nambu
@Patrick something good can come from connecting with random strangers, look at Twestival. I think it all depends on what you want from it. In an ideal world you should have some sort of plan, but I think for a lot of people they are happy to feel that they have a following
- Asgeir
Patrick B: You can block Kim here on friendfeed. You do know that right?
- Chris Heath
@Asgeir, yes something good can come from following total strangers, 97% of the people I follow on Twitter I never knew before Twitter and 95% I have still never met in person. @Chris H, yes I know you can block on ff, but I don't care if she wants to subscribe to me, I'll let her manage her own information stream.
- Patrick Boegel
I make recommendations for Twitter newbies to make connections. What's happened is that my Twitter stream is clogged now with HUNDREDS of tweeps recommending me solely for the purpose of my recommending them! UGH! I don't do that! Many of these tweeps recommend me over and over and over during the day to try to get my attention. They succeed in irritating me! I am migrating recommendations with comments to static page newbies can refer to anytime.
- Arleen Anderson
Its Kinda vicious circle. When Kevin Rose was no. 1, nobody complained. Now when Ashton Kutcher is people are complaining. When someone will surpass him, he'll start whining too.
- Abhishek
Yes, however, if any of us pretends to not have some guilt in a desire for followers, I think they are full of it...
- Leif Hansen
There is still value there... you just need to be able to filter out the crap. More importantly this is nothing new. When there were a few thousand people using Email there was no spam... now the majority of email sent is spam. Filters will become more important than any other tool as usage grows.
- Brian Roy
@Brian Roy I see the signs, but I really hope your predictions are wrong
- Asgeir
@scobleizer: users of TwitterHit should measure their success over here: http://epenis.nl
- Nick Wade
there should be a non profit that we all donate to that maintains a list of twitter users who provide value and we can all follow them and only them. signing up for services like this would get you banned from this list. and we can have our own little private twitter experience. it can even segregate the users into different channels for different topics. so you can subscribe to different lists. actually, that's a terrible idea. just throwing it out there. :-)
- mike
Tools to filter down to just what you want (topics) are just as important as your Social Graph. It isn't context OR Social Graph... it is BOTH.
- Brian Roy
I've half a mind to block everyone that comes up in this search ;-) lol!
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Not a scam, but a stupid thing to do to get more followers. Just tweet inteligently and you'll get them "brainiacs"! :\
- Miladin Miladinoski
Robert following your cycle - love, love, love to Facebook, Facebook Sucks, love, love love to Twitter, Twitter Sucks, love, love, love to FriendFeed.....when's the next step?
- Debi Jones
THIS CONTEST IS OVER. THE MONEY HAS ALREADY BEEN GIVEN AWAY. I'm giving away $4,500 of my money. The contest will be here in friendfeed between now and Tuesday afternoon. Ends 3 p.m. Austin, Texas Time. Winner will be picked live on http://www.ustream.tv/studio at 4 p.m. Austin Time. Two ways to win: First way to win ($1,000). Leave a comment here. We'll pick one winner out of a hat randomly. Second way to win (Two prizes of $1,750 each). Leave a comment about how you will use the money (use only one comment here). I'll pick my favorite two messages and announce a winner on Tuesday afternoon. Good luck!
- Robert Scoble
Lets be honest- there are few people who literally put their money where their mouth is. Mr. Scoble you continue to impress me. And I have said this before the contest.
- Alyx
I declare myself ineligible for the first way to win :)
- Douglas Gourlay
Do you have to be an American? Cause I could use a new laptop :) Plus the USD>AUD exchange rate is pretty good at the moment ($1000 USD = $1500 AUD)
- Bryce, Low in Sodium
OK, I'm changing my comment to go for one of the $1750 prizes. I will offer to donate all of it to a mutually acceptable charity in exchange for an appearance with you and Steve on the Gillmor Gang. If Jason can buy his way onto Twitter, maybe I can buy my way onto the Gillmor Gang!
- Kent
Are you still going to the XMPP meetup on tuesday?
- J Allen
I would use the money to 1. Donate and support our local Milwaukee tech community (events like web414.com, BarCampMilwaukee.com, and Bucketworks.org) and 2. purchase some more tech items (i.e. mac mini, video camera, webcam) to enhance and encourage more interaction with development and the tech community.
- Sam Dodge
$1000 for a random comment. I suspect we'll have a record number of comments. But what kind of hat will you be pulling the name out of? Austin Cowboy hat?
- Andrew Leyden
well, this is one way to get me to actually use my friend feed account =)
- Travis
I'm echoing the earlier comments, free money + your reach = most commented thread.
- Steven Cains
I could use it. Ill be out of a job in 2 weeks.
- Armando
Second way to win (Two prizes of $1,750 each). Leave a comment about how you will use the money (use only one comment here). I'll pick my favorite two messages and announce a winner on Tuesday afternoon. Good luck!
- Robert Scoble
Isn't this a nice way to test how scalable Friendfeed entries really are? :-)
- Yuval Atzmon
Will use it to buy Arrington a hairpiece after the TIME article.
- Mike
Please, no, you're better than Ben Stein (although that's not saying much) Are you trying for the most comments ever on a Friendfeed post? Because I can certainly see that coming.
- The Web's Wendell Wittler
Nicholas - would like to work with you at Rackspace, was a senior systems design engineer for Sony Broadband SW Development + Broadcast Integration Division(s) SW Systems Integration and testing, also senior technical project manager on Google's infrastructure upgrade + Verizon's FIOS fiber-to-the-premises nationwide. I also spent ten years in post-production in hollywood as a senior tech support engineer / consultant to the stars. I like bad food, long hours and the warm glow from completing projects.
- Nicholas Chase
Hmmm, how do you post a comment on FF...??? :-)
- I Spy
I would use the money, to help buy a mac for the family. We are in need of a new one, and right now our current one (a powerbook) is starting to die out. I already have some money saved up, but not enough. Thanks for doing this Robert! :)
- Techno Todd
thanks for making friendfeed notifier go insaaaaaaaaaaaaaaane
- Caio
I'll use the money to buy a laptop for my soon-to-college daughter, as well as to fund her scholarship searches& college visits this summer. She's leaning towards working in special education, continuing the volunteering she's done with her high school's Options Program (http://www.paulvi.net/academi...).
- Craig Eddy
My friend (14) and I (15) are working on a subscription web service that we want to launch this summer and some additional runway and start-up capital would really be helpful. We do have some experience with this stuff -- we did iJailBreak (www.ijailbreak.com) a year or so ago and had millions of hits and a million downloads and a lot of coverage (Gizmodo, TUAW, Digg front page multiple times).
- Ben Feldman
if i didnt know you, i would have un-friended you for a post like that. "i'm giving away money. details to come." Congrats on the new gig!
- fansnap
If I win, I'll spend it all on ale and whores. I'm in need of both.
- Onur Cengiz
$1,750? Ok, I'll give the half of it to a charity, that is: $875 — and the other half will be my contest's gift. My contest? The one who donates the most to that charity wins those $875. And yes, I'm serious :)
- directeur
I don't know about the tax consequences. I'll try to find out. Basically this money is money Cisco paid to me and I'm just shipping it back out. So, this money will be counted pre-tax, I'm sure, and you'll probably need to pay tax on it.
- Robert Scoble
First comment: Hope my comment gets chosen!
- Kevin Poirier
you can give away money in this economic times? ;)
- Simon
I'd be using the money to finance my freelance work and get a half-way decent video camera. I'm working with a friend of mine on tooloftheday.de (nothing to see there yet) to produce videos of popular tools, tips, tricks, howtos, etc...
- Holger Eilhard
Throwing my piece of paper into the hat. Crossing my fingers!
- Troy Malone
man, my feed is going crazy... stop it guys :)
- Ingo Di Bella
OK Robert, I'll bite and leave a comment here.
- Herne
Second comment...I will use the money to buy as many clever domain names that I can in hope that one day, when you are creating your "next big thing" that you will have to purchase the domain name from me realizing that you had in fact, through me, had purchased these domain names in the first place.
- Kevin Poirier
If I win: I will use the money to lend out some of it on Kiva.org, give my brother (12 years old) his own domain/hosting so he could start a wp-blog there and maybe buy Spotify premium =)
- Anton Johansson
I would buy a new macbook pro with it. I have the old one, and Was hoping to buy the current one. I would then give the old one to my brother and I would use the new one! :)
- TheHenry
I would use it for the prizes I'm giving out daily on my twitter game @I_spy_treasure. Robert, you can win it back... (and so can anyone else...)
- I Spy
I will use part 2 to donate to Kiva.org and match it with Cisco's matching gifts program
- Douglas Gourlay
I would donate it to my homeless shelters.
- imabonehead
I'm giving my winnings to congress to spend wisely : )
- Joseph
Congratulations to both you and Rocky on the new jobs.
- Ron Schott
Count me in! Could use the extra $$ to buy a mac and see what all the hype is about.
- Tim
I would create a company called One Laser Per Child.
- Lasse Johnsen
This is my comment. I would use the extra $1750 to pay for me and Lindsay's trip to Gnomedex this year. It would probably be enough for us to come up and stay a few extra days in Seattle.
- Internet's Tad
That'd put a dent in my taxes. Ugh, freelancing has its pains.
- Andrew
Is there a third way to win? I'd use the money to offset part of the costs of moving to Portland in the spring. Moving from New York with next to no connections to see what it's like living on the west coast for a while.
- Mark Trapp
Sadly, I'd use most of the money to pay bills, but in the spirit of ff, I'd take a smaller portion of it to play a similar game on my ff.
- Randall Rodakowski
What I'd do with $1000? Get them converted to Euros :) Would most likely be spend on "offline" needs, like a new bathroom
- dieck
I suppose spending it on crack and hookers wouldn't win the prize, would it?
- Ian Betteridge
Interesting; I'd give a bit more than the the money to an unemployed friend for necessities(car repair, rent, food, getting back her phone with Nana Lemon singing Nena's famous anti-balloon protest song) in cash and perhaps a small gift
- RAPatton
I would use the money to go biking in Tibet and give everything that's left to the Tibetians.
- Henrik Johansson
Robert why are you giving away money - not that I am complaining- but curious! :)
- Susan Beebe
I'd spend mine on women, booze and a Mac.
- Ed Hudson
I'd use it to stretch the time I can work for equity-only before our startup gets funded! (Why doesn't federal stimulus money go to something like this which actually creates jobs and innovation instead of banks and auto companies?)
- Dale Larson
I will use the money to go PyCon, learn new skills, network, mention how generous Robert Scoble is, and do a sprint to improve FriendFeed PyAPI--which, by the way, you should use to select the random winners from this thread. https://launchpad.net/friendf... Thanks in advance.
- Chris Lasher
Clever way to show the power of friendfeed!
- Emee Pumarega
For $1750: I would pay a portion of my wife's college tuition, buy my daughter a netbook, and my son a practice guitar amp.
- Mattb4rd
Great idea! Count me in. I think you should give your money away monthly.
- Grace Ciccone
I'm Here. Wow. I''ve thrown the laptop up on a 56" JVC LCD HD. Convergence! Just watched you on the Gillmor Gang. Feels like TV to me. It's great. Something's definitely happening.
- Stephen Pickering
I'd spend the money on a new display, I really need one
- Dobromir Hadzhiev
Not my first comment on a Scoble posting here, but first with a potential payoff.
- Tom Landini
I'm in. How I will use the money? will buy server for XdbE project
- Elmira Gazizova
With $1,000 I could buy all 57 Used & new "Naked Conversations" books from Amazon and still have enough to buy bottle service at the club.
- Andy Fields
would like to be able to try new technologies while still being a student and on a student's income = ($0)
- Shane Grant
Cool, count me in :-) I would use the money by buying 2 HTC Fuzes for me and my love.
- Sarah Peterman
Count me in! (for the first way I guess :P).
- Mauro Borione
What can I do to get your $$$ Robert? How about a virtual dance from my dogs?
- Jeff
get Diabla my pit bull puppy hip surgery sooner rather than later
- shayne catrett
I would use the money to help fund a small-scale electronics lab, which has been a dream of mine for some time. It would serve as the perfect place to plot and create the robotic army that will eventually take over the world! Also it would teach me lots that would make me very attractive to an employer, or capable of creating a business of my own.
- Daniel Bruce
It would be hard for me to decide how to spend the money. There is so much, yet so little, being given. Because I'm a crazy Linux-lover, I think I should take the selfless route and donate at least part of the money to various Linux/open-source programming projects. Though, I would have to be careful to make sure that the money is not wasted in the style that Jeff Atwood describes (http://www.codinghorror.com/blog...).
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
<cold><oddsized><red>here's my comment</red></oddsized></cold>. I've made my comment colored and differently shaped because supposedly those will get drawn before all the other regular looking comments. It's cold too because that's how the Knicks got Ewing first in the draft.
- Todd Hoff
Well, I need a new kidney, and there just happens to be one available on Ebay for $1000. (The previous portion of this comment is an utter lie; both my kidneys are doing fine, I am gainfully employed, do not need the money as much as so many on this thread, but Mastercard would really love to have it.) Congrats and good luck with the new venture, Robert.
- Phil Essing
Hey as long as were giving away money - count me in ;)
- Rob Jones
sweet, a thousands eh? converted to $ JMD that's 90k, groceries for 2 months:P
- Gordon Swaby
i'd like to thank my good friends olasofia and tav for mentioning this opportunity to win $1000 randomly, and if gratitude to one's friends isn't enough, how about this: i will give the $1750 for the best answer to this question: now that there are 100,000 people paying attention, what single action can we all do next tuesday that has the greatest social impact globally?
- happyseaurchin
For either amount, I would look to pay down some of my pressing debts and apply the rest towards a rainy-day fund. The 10% paycut I took three months ago has not helped things.
- JA Castillo
I'm on spring break now and my school was nice enough to lend me a Canon 20D (a little old, but I'm still glad to have borrowed it). Usually, only people who are part of the after school photography club can take it out, and seeing that I'm not, I was quite lucky. They gave me a 28-135mm lens, which looked ok to me. It was the last lens they had available, so it was take it or leave it....
- Michael Forian
hmmm just leave a comment for a $1,000 dollars, not sure what to say...
- Kevin Tunis
$1750 for a cheeky mobile app, any more would be telling
- Yant
I'm here. pick me :) How would I use? I'll buy a netbook and some books.
- Dogan Tuncer
Testing the mix, testing, testing, one two, one two, - is this thing on?
- Martha
I would use the money to do what I do with all of my money...support my wife through graduate school :p. Thanks for the opportunity, Robert.
- Neal Jansons
Give it to Michael Forian! He seems so well-meaning!
- RexEveryhting
Awesome. With $1,000, I'd use 50% to buy shares of F, GM, BAC, etc... and we'll have even more money to hand out. With the other 50%, we could also make 20 $25 loans at a Stanford MBA microfinance project, so the money recycles and has more impac (and have FFers decide which projects to support). Gumball Capital http://news.newamericamedia.org/news... or Kiva.org http://kiva.org Ideally we could even start a fund to support out-of-work FF'ers.
- Mitchell Tsai
@scobleizer - please give me your money. if you do i will use it wisely to help pay for a macbook & if i get more than the random $1000 prize i will use it in a philanthropic manner
- Chris Heath
I'm probably use the money for a new bed for son, and upgrade Shelly's computer
- jamar78
I'd have to use it all to put toward the $1,900 deposit due next month for the Friends school for which we got an acceptance letter, on behalf of our 10 yo, earlier today since my partner's reaction was that all I needed to do was to go out and get a job Monday! We've tried public schs (& their lotteries) in Boston & DC and have come to this... If that wasn't pressing, I'd use it to put...
- Angela E. Taylor
updated to say - please give the money to someone in need. If I were to have the money to give away, my choice would be to http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com.
- BEX
Wait, in this economy, you giving away money?!
- Adi Rabinovich
So...dear! Did you sign the cheque? Yes? Now send it to me! LOL
- Lora Lufark
It would be really cool if this money went to a charity in need, in increasingly tough times.
- jjprojects
I'd use it to buy myself some time to finish a volunteer project I'm doing for my alma mater - making a website that is an archaeological cataloger and academic discussion space all in one.
- Joey Brunelle
posting comment. crossing fingers. knocking on wood for good measure.
- Anita
I'd use the money as a donation for my favorite charity, www.4everhomes.org, helping orphans and foster children get adopted.
- Lynn Owens
I will use the cash to invest in a MacBook for my wife so she can be mobile and still do her school work and finish that degree finally!!!
- Geek Cowboy
Well after the football team I support (Nottingham Forest) lost 5 -0 today I would spend the money on buying myselft a place in the squad. I can't be any worse than the current goalkeeper
-
