Help me out - suggest me some inexpensive, easy-to-make meals that I could do say, for dinner one night and have leftovers that I could take to work and eat for lunch the next day (or just make the night before). I've GOT to stop eating out, and most pre-packaged meals that taste like actual food are almost as expensive as eating fast food.
Beans and rice--many variations on this theme, good for you, inexpensive, great the next day. - Ayşe E.
Soups, stews, casseroles, a steak would be perfect. Half for dinner at night, then make a sandwich with the other half for lunch. - Admiral Anika
Lots of meats lend themselves well to sandwiches the next day. - Eric @ CSTechcast.com
Gumbo! - Adrian
Do you have a slow cooker? They are helpful for spaghetti sauce, pot roast, pork roasts, ribs... - Michelle Martinez
Pasta FTW - Amy
Make a big batch of rice, stick them in some zip-lock sandwich bags, and freeze them. It's so convenient to pop them in the microwave. Dennison's chili to go with them. Or make Golden Curry with some meat and veggies. - Rodfather
Lentil soup. I love it the next day. Just made this a couple of days ago, going to have it for dinner tonight: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes... - Ayşe E.
Michelle, I think I do, but I have never used it, so I'm a little scared of it. :) Adrian, gumbo sounds time-intensive to make, and I'm not really a cook. At all. Amy, I like pasta too much to save any for the next day. ;) But I should try that - just make double what I usually do and save some. Anika/Eric, I always forget about saving meat for sandwiches. One thing is I just have to... more... - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Any stir-fry and rice combo heats up well the next day. You could make a massive pile of sandwiches and freeze them, then just grab a couple before you leave for work. You can also freeze muffins and cake. Add a piece of fruit and you're good to go. - Mellissa
Oooh... Golden Curry. That's what I want now. Wait a minute... RODFATHER? Get out of my head! Last time you posted a photo of CHILI DOGS, I spent two days trying to get them. I finally got them yesterday. - Adrian
Stews and soups re-heat well. - Michael R. Bernstein
Chili, pasta, stew - RAPatton from iPhone
Golden Curry is dope and it makes a lot of food. Great for leftovers - Rodfather
Fritatas, FTW! - T. Brent, technopeasant
homemade chicken fried rice, all crockpot stews, chili. I like to cook big on sunday and then not worry about it, so i collect crockpot cookbooks - I highly recommend this method. - Archangel ωαřмaiden
great idea, archangel. - T. Brent, technopeasant
Ooh, pot roast also good for leftovers. Plus, same ingredients for stew. - Archangel ωαřмaiden
Ok, I will back up the lentil soup also. Very healthy too if you make with minimal salt and no oil. - Adrian
I would suggest fried rice if you are good at cooking rice or have a rice cooker. Or roast a whole chicken, and roast some veggies beside it (or in the same pan, but I've never tried those and can't vouch for them). Chicken is super-affordable when not pre-portioned or boned out, so you can probably afford to splurge on a nice, high-quality one. Or get salad leaves (romaine, arugula, or baby spinach) for when you're too lazy to cook veggies. Frozen peas are great for easy cooking too. - Andrew C
Mus have Golden Curry................ - Adrian
Also, do not fear your crockpot. Best idiotproof kitchen invention evar. Dump in ingreds, set to low, dinner's done when you get home. Win! - Archangel ωαřмaiden
Aha! I do have a crock-pot! Just pulled it out of the cupboard, where it's lived for years. This could be good. *goes to search for crock-pot recipes* Archangel, it's the planning ahead part that's going to get me. I'm usually an "OMG I'm going to starve if I don't eat within the next five minutes, what can I make in less than five minutes" kind of cook. ;) - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
I just found this... a guide to the Top 10 Slowcook Cookbooks: http://southernfood.about.com/od... - T. Brent, technopeasant
Or pick up a whole rotisserie chicken, eat the dark meat with some taters and veggies for dinner, hook up a sandwich for lunch next day. Tadaaa! We do this a lot. Probably too much. Mmmm... potato logs too. Damn it starving now. - Adrian
Roasted chicken is super easy. Then you can bring chicken pieces to work or make it into chicken salad. - Shannon Jiménez
Probly not too healthy, but cheap and GOOD. Tad's Mexican Mess: Ground beef + taco mix. Cook, then mix in cheddar cheese in the skillet and then crunch up chips into it. YUM. - Tad
You guys are awesome! I knew with as many food pictures come through my stream, y'all would be able to help me out. ;) And now I'm starving. And I have to go to the store. With a budget of $20. This is not good, y'all. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Also, casseroles. They're easy, cheap, and freeze well if you get sick of one before it's done. - Shannon Jiménez
Just recently, I made a super-delicious chicken hash - a bit of leftover chicken, hash browns (I coulda used a potato or two but these needed eating up), diced carrot, celery, and onion, some frozen corn, and some pesto. The skin, I cut up and fried, then microwaved for some crispy cracklings to sprinkle over. - Andrew C
Enchilada bake casserole! Anika makes this. Always hits the spot. - Adrian
How long does the $20 have to stretch you? The thing about meat at the store is that you basically pay for tenderness and/or butchering, not flavor. So buy whole birds or tougher cuts (of pork or beef) and either do some of the butchering yourself or sear, then braise or slow-cook the tough cuts. - Andrew C
A friend buys deli meat and bread at the beginning of the week and leaves them in the work fridge. Just enough to last the week. - Rodfather
Andrew, I'm not sure. I'm hoping not too long, because I should be getting paid soon. $20 is what I have in cash right now, and I'd like not to use the little bit of credit I have left until I absolutely have to. [That's actual cash - I have a bit more in the bank I'd also prefer not to use.] - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Oh - $20? I'd say you're gonna be living off of rice, beans and water for the foreseeable future. Doable, but no fun. As a bonus, you're sure to lose some weight! :) - Tad
I would definitely look for whatever's on sale. I do that all the time anyways. =) Even when you're flush, it never hurts to be frugal and it also imposes variety - you can't always eat the same thing when different things go on sale. - Andrew C
Yeah, it's a little tighter this week than normal, but I'm hoping to still stay inexpensive in the future (and STOP EATING OUT) to help not getting in this situation again if the money doesn't come in on time. ;) - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Ooh, now *I* want some of that Golden Curry. - Derrick
Make a batch of tuna salad or egg salad. For a less soggy sandwich, pack the salad in a little plastic bowl and take fresh bread along to put it together at lunchtime. Piece of fruit and you're good. - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
I have a white chicken chili recipe that's cheap, delicious, and freezes really well for when you get howngry and there's nothign around: http://www.thecookbookcritic.com/archive... - Archangel ωαřмaiden
To stretch your $20 as far as possible, buy rice and beans. But don't get the convenience versions of either (ie. not microwavable rice, nor canned beans). Your best bet is to get brown rice (unless you dislike it, some people do), some wild-rice you can mix in for variety, and one or more good dry beans in bulk. Some beans are *extremely* tasty even unseasoned. - Michael R. Bernstein
Just got back from the store: rice + milk + cereal + noodles (the kind in the bowl that can be microwaved; I caved, but they were only 69c) + OJ + ground beef (not as lean as I'd like, but SUPER cheap) + hamburger buns = $15. I'm okay with that. Doing sloppy joes tonight as friends might come over; if they do, there'll be plenty for all, if not, I'll have lunch tomorrow, too! - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Michael, I hate microwaveable rice, so no worries there. I'm not much for beans except for bbq beans, which I've only had from a can (or, like, a restaurant). I guess this whole cooking and eating things I make instead of buying so much pre-made stuff is kind of like a #resolution, huh? It'll be good to get me to try out new things, at the very least. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Baked whole chicken followed by chicken soup. Three or four days worth of meals. - Todd Hoff
A big old dish of veggie lasagna lasts a few days. Plus a salad and few squares of dark chocolate for desert. - Todd Hoff
Jandy, here’s my all time favorites this time of year, Beef Stew: http://southernfood.about.com/od... and for Chili: http://southernfood.about.com/od... ; personally I make up large batches of both and freeze them – Hope this helps. - Tom Awtry
Tom, thanks for the links! I was poking around that site earlier from T. Brent's link, but got a little overwhelmed by all the options! - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Bean soup? Ham hocks are really really cheap and they add great flavor. Add some chopped veggies and it's pretty nutritious, too. - Katy S
Meatloaf!!! great for dinner - great for sandwiches! ;-p - Robyn Hawk
Make a steak, roast chicken, grilled boneless skinless chicken breast, or big piece of fish and have with rice and a simple steamed vegetable (or even frozen vegetables) for dinner. The next day, put some of that sliced meat or fish over a big bed of greens. If you crave carbs, put a little of rice right on the salad too. - Laura Norvig
Also, if you have a fridge, microwave, and toaster at work, keep stuff at work for instant lunch whether or not you have last night's leftovers. I keep a loaf of healthy bread, peanut butter, butter, cheese and jam for various toast snacks. Also yogurts, salad greens, dressing, canned soup. I always have some sort of lunch available. - Laura Norvig
We have a fridge and microwave, but the fridge is...uh...not recommended for actual use. The office used to be dominated by a bunch of slobby guys. We've reclaimed the microwave somewhat, but none of us are keen on using the fridge until we can get it replaced. We bring insulated bags with ice packs instead. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF

Georgia and I are playing in the McDonalds playground next to where Rach is getting some physio for her back... I just heard the couple sitting next to me whispher 'it must be a visitation day'... Since I'm the only other person in here, it was directed at me...
Firstly... WTF you sacks of shit? You know nothing of my situation and what I'm doing here. And Second... So a dad and his daughter alone automatically equals a divorced dad on visitation? Finally... Why is this a bad thing? I know divorced fuck heads who never ever see their kids and I also know great people who only get to see thier kids on rare occasions and treasure what little time they do have like gold... I'm so fucking pissed right now. Knowing some FriendFeeder's situation with thier kids and lack of access, I wanna cram a Happy Meal right up these fuck head's asshole... Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! - Johnny Worthington from email
Spending time with your kids should never ever ever be looked down upon... - Johnny Worthington from iPhone
Unfortunately you shove that happy meal where the sun don't shine and "visitation day" takes on a whole new meaning. - SAM
That is seriously f-ed up. - Spidra Webster
LOL Sam... Thanks, I needed that :) - Johnny Worthington from iPhone
:( People should really mind their own business. - Michelle Martinez

Playing devil's advocate here: the couple could have been discussing her time of the month with pet euphemisms. - Mark H
Those people are also the type who tip poorly and park like assholes. - Jon, the Beartato of '10
That is out of line. It says a lot about their limited perspective... one might even say "entrenched" point of view. - Mark "Mr Bolivious" J
Sam... wins. - Yolanda
If it had been me, I don't know if I could have kept quiet about it. - Akiva Moskovitz
Wow, that's astonishing. I take my daughter places all the time, I wonder how often similar comments are voiced that I'm simply unaware of. - DGentry from Android
Any day I can make Johnny Worthington laugh is good day, and an honor... But as a friend: Random comments from some yahoo? ...eh, it's just sad they don't know better really. - SAM
Bad enough they feel they can make a judgement. They compound their stupidity by being indiscreet enough to state their ignorance aloud. Fine, I can turn this into a lesson for me in how NOT to behave. - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
I'd rather talk about the playground than judgmental folks. Is it inside or outside? Ball pit or slides? Is there a Hamburgler statue? - Eric @ CSTechcast.com
Hehe... I like Eric... that's good stuff. (Hey Johhny, you back on your game? FFundercats in 1hr!!!) - SAM
I hated it when I went somewhere without my Kid and someone would say "Oh, is daddy babysitting?" I always wondered if that's what I was doing when I was caring for the Kid. - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
I just figured they thought you were crazy and she was visiting YOU. - Louis Gray
So rude. Sorry, Johnny. >:( - Ayşe E.
i get similar bullshit directed at me when i'm out by myself with my daughters, Johnny. it sucks. chin up, these fools don't know what an awesome dad you are. they don't count, only your family does. - Joe Silence is ashes
Frankly, it's sad that those people believe that dad + daughter - mom = divorce. Think about what that says about THEIR jaded views of marriage and family. - Jason, Craving
i've had it implied that there was something pervy about me being alone with my daughters. now THAT'S sick. - Joe Silence is ashes
First Johnny rant of 2010 (at least for me)! Your right, they are pricks, but I'm sure they are sadly incomplete in their lives and try to fill the void by assuming things about others. - Mathew™ one of a kind
In parallel, I always get weird looks too when I'm out with Sarah (or Sarah and Matthew) when at the park. My kids happen to interact with other kids, and as a good parent, I must occasionally hover to avoid bruising, etc. Yet I often get looks from other mothers that clearly I must be preying on their kids or looking to accost them in some way. Whereas mothers will talk with other kids' mothers, I am seen as unapproachable. - Louis Gray
Louis, I have been accused of being a perv on more occasions than I care to recout with my photgraphy... Makes me want to cry at times... My favourite response it 'I'm a landscape photographer and your kid just ruined my shot. Do you know how long it's going to take me to Photoshop them out?'. It's effective, but I wish I didn't have to say it :( - Johnny Worthington from iPhone
It's such sad commentary. Paranoia doesn't end at airports, it stretches all the way to the playground. *shakes head*. I'm a dad, and I feel for all the dads who spoke up here. - Micah Wittman
I'm a single full-time Dad to an eleven year old Daughter about half the time, so I can relate to some of the thoughts above. I used to feel weird and uncomfortable hosting play dates and such at our house. We've been at the same school for years now, so it's no longer an issue. I don't even think about such things much anymore when my Daughter and I are out together - if someone thinks something weird is going on it's their problem, not mine! Don't let it get you down, Johnny! :-> - Kurt Starnes
This is why you need lasers, or Emperor Palpatine electricity fingers - Mo Kargas
The whole thing sux. The idea that you guys still have to deal with this crap after all these years - we fought so hard for the right to raise our kids as we saw fit. And now it seems like it's back to the Fifties . . . - MaryB, BrandingBroadOfFF

We may be the only family in America who lacks extra AA batteries this soon after Christmas. #Xboxwithdrawals
No, there is always a serious lack of AA's in my house, any time of the year. I have to protect mine like they were made of gold, lest my hubby raids my digital camera to feed his crappy radio. - April Russo (app103)
I'm constantly taking AAs out of one thing and putting them into another depending on current need. I never remember to actually get new ones. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF

The 110 Essential Candies for Candivores - Candy Blog
"The world of candy is immense with more than 10,000 choices at any given moment on the planet, how can a mere mortal experience it all? Well, having it all is overrated. I’ve compiled a list based on my lifetime of candy of just the essentials, candies that every candy lover should experience at least once. You know, for a good foundation in candy education. These are not necessarily my favorite candies (some I don’t even like and others I haven’t tried) but they’ve stood the test of time." - Michelle Martinez from Bookmarklet

Yay, 1vs100 Finish the Lyric! My first themed game, actually. :) Next up is Movie Quotes, which I'll probably be better at than lyrics. #myboringnye
Wait, so is that Hendrix lyric "excuse me while I kiss the sky" or "kiss this guy"? Because I thought it was supposed to be "kiss the sky" originally, but I swear to God that Guitar Hero World Tour has it as "this guy," but 1vs100 just said "the sky". Now I'm all confused. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Inside joke, on Guitar Hero, I would guess. "Kiss this guy" is one of the top "misheard lyrcs", the classic example actually. - Michael W. May
I knew it was, but I never knew which was actually correct. Well, like I said, I thought it was "kiss the sky" until stupid Guitar Hero. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Yep, classic Mondegreen there. I wonder why GH would have the wrong lyric. It couldn't be licensing. - Admiral Anika
