It's easy for non american's to sit on the side lines and make obligitory comments about our election process when they have no stake in it. try living here and having a vested interest in who wins. it's sad enough that our electoral system is already jacked up by corporate interests, a jaded electorate who most likely won't vote, and news media that thrives on sound bites over actual answers to real questions and not vaguery. It's easy for you to throw stones at Bush. If you had any real understanding of the American system of government (something most American's don't anymore) you would understand that he, as 1 Person, has his power balanced by both the House and the Judiciary. If Congress REALLY wanted to stop him, they could. In fact, the Democrats gained control over bouth houses of Congress with that very premise. They were to get us out of Iraq (somewhere we should have never been) and they were supposed to roll back the Patriot Act, get spending under control, and a host of other things. Only the president can get us out of a war once it's been started. Congress could do nothing without the required votes. The Democrats don't have enough votes on their own to break a veto. So to say that the Democrats had control of both houses is a bit disingenuous. More people voted for Al Gore than G.W.. Second, people get scared easily when there are uncertain times and bad people take advantage of this fear. @LPH: It didn't matter that more people voted for Gore over Bush. That's why we have an electoral college. Everybody learns about that in school, it's no secret. In fact, they bring it up every presidential election "here's the key states that Candidate A needs to win." As for a policy of divide and conquer. Have you not been listening? It's always Us versus Them. The Dems want minoritys to feel trodded upon so they'll vote for them to get back at the man, they want the poor to feel disenfranchised so they'll vote for them and tax the hell out of the rich. Whose the Republicans playing against who? They do it, too, just a bit more subtle. Kick the bums off welfare and make them get a job. Oh wait, Clinton did that with Welfare to Work. I guess the only real issues Republicans have is Pro Life and the military anymore. - Jason Shultz via twhirl

@Alex. True, about 9/11. It's the response of 9/11 and it's consequences that worries me. Talk of revenge and vengeance from any president or statesman is always chilling. Revenge that hasn't ended, despite sovereign nations being destroyed, millions dead. What upsets me Tina is that a real republican is the very opposite of Bush. A real republican stands for small government. Bush has grown and grown the government and the republicans in Congress have aided and abetted him. I just don't think that Obama is going to make it any better either. There is very little in my opinion that seperates the two sides anymore. Corporate interests, lobbyists, and influence by the wealthy has so infiltrated both parties that you really do just keep getting more of the same. That's the point I've been trying to make. Ok, one more comment then back to watching Project Runway. I read his speech just now. I thought it was really good. I agree with @AlexScoble in that it is not full of Us versus Them. IF and I mean IF Barrack turns out to really be the person who means what he says in that speech, then I'll be very happy in 4 years. I sincerely hope he means what he says about the Lobbyists in his speech because they are one of the central reasons our government is in crisis today. - Jason Shultz via twhirl

He is a good orator - but speeches are just that - pretty speeches. Obama's problem now is that he keeps changing his stances and so many don't trust that the speeches mean anything. And underneath it all, it comes off insincere. He talks about new politics, but his first whole career in Chicago politics is one of shady (but legal) election practices and funneling funds into groups he was affiliated with. Obama the speaker is a force of change - Obama the politician hasn't come close to living up to it IMHO - Soulhuntre
