A DGentry Classic: "There are only 16 characters to work with, but programmers just love coming up with creative spellings using hex numbers. I suspect that leetspeak evolved out of these spellings, though personally I prefer the original form." http://codingrelic.geekhold.com/2008...
Nice. Just sold my first photo (above) on Clustershot. I sold a license for $300 and get to keep $264. Gotta love the payout percentage to the photographer in selling work on Clustershot!
- Thomas Hawk
from Bookmarklet
Clusterstock was started by silverorange. Daniel Burka from digg is one of the investors. The idea is to let photographers set the price for their work and then give them most of the proceeds of the sale. Clusterstock pays out 88% directly to photographers vs. Getty/Flickr's 20% payouts. I really hope that they succeed in gaining attention with their catalog. You can link your flickr photos directly to clusterstock to import them and sell them.
- Thomas Hawk
I still think the name is a disaster that's gonna hold them back... but congrats, Thomas!
- Stephen Mack
Thomas - I thought you might be interested to know that this sale was generated by a Google search refer for the term ""stock photography Noe Valley". Oh, and it's ClusterShot not ClusterStock :)
- Dan James
ahhh, sorry dan, clustershot, clustershot. Why can't I remember that. Good to see that you guys are indexing well on Google Dan.
- Thomas Hawk
"And hobbyists are also catching the attention of book publishers who are looking for stock art to illustrate a cookbook or graphic designers needing an inexpensive photo for a new ad campaign. "I think it's the next wave of publishing," said Heather Luplow Hartle, owner and creative director for 7x7 magazine, which devoted its entire August issue to photos found through Flickr, along with essays from citizen journalists. Although some shutterbugs are making six-figure incomes, the low-cost trend has angered some professional photographers who decry the way their craft is being devalued at a time when jobs are disappearing. "I market to ad agencies and graphic design firms," said professional photographer Tony Blei of Mesa, Ariz. "A lot of them are saying, 'Sorry, man, our clients don't have the budget. We're told just to go to iStock.' ""

Lemme launch LR. BRB *added: Increase of Blacks, recovery, and clarity -- all done via Quick Develop. Forget what ya heard, LR cuts PS workflow down by 95%. Not even kidding.
- Mona Nomura
@Mona - you aren't very far off, i'll tell you that (from the first guess)
- Justin Korn
Second guess is a bit further off...I never use quick develop
- Justin Korn
Hmmm really? Quick Develop is the easiest for me. I just go through all the options and increase. Went to the next window over for the first time the other day and was shocked to see Vignette LOL Quick Develop ftw.
- Mona Nomura
There are soooo many extra options available in full mode. You gotta start playing with the stuff at the top like Graduation filter and adjustment brush...they are KEY
- Justin Korn
Anywho...here is what I did (roughly): Lightroom...actually used the Direct Positive Preset, added a graduated filter from bottom to top adjusting the Exposure, Brightness, Contrast, and Saturation specifically on the bottom portion, adjusted White Balance, bumped Vibrance and Saturation on entire image and played with the Tone Curve a bit. Finally removed a few dust spots. Any questions?
- Justin Korn
My Favourite is: The Aged Photo preset, then set the white balance back to auto, bump up the blacks and then slide saturation back around zero. It takes some tweaks from then but gives a look I like :)
- Johnny
I really like the Aged look as well, but I usually end up making that look myself rather then using the Preset...I rarely actually use the built in presets. Sometimes I'll play with them to get ideas if I don't already have an idea of what I want the image to look like.
- Justin Korn
Indeed. I created a preset based off the Aged Photo called 'Fancypants' as I was going to the style of Carlotta :)
- Johnny
Carlotta Fancypants is awesome!

I have the kanji for "Year of the Snake" on my right shoulder and a large scorpion on my left and am thinking of getting a couple more at this point.

I have a rose on my wrist and a daisy on the side of my calf. The daisy is my favorite, it looks like a watercolor painting w/hardly any black ink. Got it when I was 20. crap, that was a long time ago!

My late husband had a beautiful wolf on his right shoulder. It was honestly the best looking tattoo I have ever seen. It looked like a pastel drawing and not a tattoo at all. It was all grays, except for the yellow eyes.
- Dawn
Louis: Oh, come on. Think outside the box. Surely there would be SOMEthing you could get into. The Google logo? No. A little laptop? Neah. Hmmmm...what would be appropriate for a social media expert? I'll have to think about that one.
- Dawn
for Louis - I'm thinking chain links.
- Melissa Davis
I wonder if they make Easy Button or Panic Button tattoos. Where would you put it if you got one? (right now, mind is in the gutter so reserving comment)
- Melissa Davis
I would think an "Easy Button" tattoo would belong just below the belt, centered under the belly-button
- Christian (Simply X)
45 adapter? At first I'm thinking "that little plastic piece you put inside old 45 records? That's weird." So then I thought maybe you were talking about a gun. So I googled it, and sure enough, it's that plastic piece, now made into jewelry, etc. Hey, I'm almost 50. Takes me awhile. :)

I have 4 right now. The 1st on the back of my neck which is a splash of stars. 2nd-right shoulder-skull in a tribal vine in the shape of a heart 3rd-anchor with stars winding up it on left shoulderblade and my newest tat....an easy button for my tramp stamp

Thanks for the link to Pretzel Logic, Marshall. Ironically, I was at a lunch meeting about the time you published this and we were talking about other use cases for a FriendFeed-esq platform in the enterprise. There's so many more places where this makes sense in the business world. I'll do a follow up in a few weeks.

I can see in the future, an open wire VOiP link that everyone can share, there will be SIG channels that groups can side track too, and then go back to the main channel & listen. You would invite like Twitter or Friend Feed (maybe Google) to control the channels. We used this type of intercom system with NASA where we all could talk to each other at the same time for downrange...

I think this whole real time conversation around a social object concept is very powerful. Social Objects anchor the conversation in shared context between participants.
- Zaki Manian
Man, 1 in 4 comments on that article are yahoos smugly asserting that FF is an IRC clone and that Marshall/Paul are lying or dumb to think otherwise. Why are blog readers so quick to judge?

The real-time conversation facet of FriendFeed is now only emphasize with the appearance of Google Wave. I hope FriendFeed will figure out its place in the emerging space. THE REMOTE SETTLEMENT of Burketown, in Australia’s northern Queensland, is not the sort of place you’d expect people to travel thousands of miles to visit. With a population of just 178, Burketown sits in one of Australia’s most remote shires. But every September and October, a small group of individuals journey from all corners of the country for the appearance of a remarkable and dramatic cloud called the Morning Glory. Clouds don’t usually have names, nor are they normally linked to a particular location, but then the Morning Glory is no normal cloud.

Hey Robert, I posted your question on the Gildertech board and George Gilder responded "My two favorite New York companies are Gerson Lehrman (the private Google of consultants rather than URLs) and Boliven, a spinoff that makes finding, creating, and comparing patents and intellectual property simple and lawyer free." - George Gilder
- Stephen Pickering
Oh, Robert, one member of the board, who is a funny guy, said humorously, "Your first question to him is, why would you leave Half Moon bay to go to NYC?........................flop" hehehehehe. I'm not sure what he meant. Just trying to be funny I guess.

I used the Flickr exporter that came as a developer example for a while, until I stopped using Flickr.
- Brian Johns
I use it and like it just fine. One downside for me is that I have to do photos 1 at a time because I want to give them real names before uploading, and prior to export they are just default named .dngs. One feature I wish it had was to some how tag photos that is uploads so I could easily see in my catalog which pictures have or have not been uploaded to Flickr.
- Andy Roth
I use it "ALL" the time, and you "CAN" batch upload pictures with unique names and unique tags. The plug-in is very rich in customizing features just click through some of the options. The only negative in my opinion is the lag time it takes to make contact with flickr, otherwise a priceless tool for frequent Lightroom/Flickr users.
- Vox
Andy Roth: Flickr should read your photo's names if you enter them into the "Title" metadata field under "Library" view, no?
- Tom Harrison
Give your picture a name in the Title field, a description can be added in the caption field, add your tags. Export - under File naming keep file name selected. Under Meta Data Management choose Basic Title and Basic Caption. You can also add a "unique" tag there as well good luck.

"The mayor of Warren is asking municipal and school officials in the region to require their staffers to buy American cars. So the lesson for the rest of the car-buying public is that people only buy American cars when they are forced to? That makes them extra appealing :)

And does this mean Toyotas made in the USA or Fords made in Mexico?

make cars manufactured outside of the USA more expensive. its simple.

Which is more patriotic: buying a Chevy made in Mexico, or buying a Toyota made in Tennessee?

buying a Chevy, made in Utah, at better price than Toyota

I guess in China then they should buy Chinese cars and stuff. Idiots.

“Political appointees making over $100,000, that’s tax-payer’s money.” By that logic, GM employees should all be forced to buy Asian and European cars, since the money they earned came from those markets. North America was the only GM division that had a net loss last quarter.

nothing more inspiring than a compelled role model. I'd rather go buy a used Skoda

Apparently, the South Korean government has used a different method of "persuasion" in the past: "until recently, the Korean government audited the tax returns of anyone who bought an imported car" http://www.america.gov/st...

supporting americans is one facet that ties to other things. consumerism has varying degrees of 'meritocracy'. they purchase if it's good to them & meets their needs. make good quality products readily available at reasonably affordable prices while remaining competitive. generally speaking, many consumers don't care where it's made as long as it's acceptable quality & they're willing to pay.
- sɹǝɥʇɐǝɟʞɔɐןq
I'm happy to buy American cars as long as they are made in Australia.

There is something to be said for limiting the amount of money that leaves our economy. Less importing and unchanged or more exporting = accumulation of wealth. Taxes and Tariffs on foreign autos leads to retaliation, but "soft" encouragement could avoid political nastiness while helping our economy.

Money is not wealth. If you have all the money and I have all the goods, and you have decided that you will not let go of any money, then you are poor. I think people's brains are built to expect zero-sum everywhere :(

Actually I do have it against things made in China. Both of my iPhones, and my iMac had to be replaced with in the 1st week. It is also not good when to get the lowest bid to manufacture, you use chemicals which are proven to kill, and not legal to use here in the US. I do try to buy goods made in democratic countries, though that is very hard to do (as any kid will tell you "everything is made in china")
- Steve Sill
Andy: that's the beef. It's all very well to be free market and freewheeling, until things turn against us. Then all of a sudden we need to be told to buy the grey sandpaper toilet rolls made here, and the supermarket gets new rules that stop it stocking anything else. *sigh*
- Nick Wade
Uh, ever heard of competition? If you want protectionist measures, go somewhere else

I work in Flint and drive a Honda. This guy and his whacked out brethren scare the shit out of me. There are people here talking about revolution. The only thing that makes me feel better is the UAW were going to stage a rally here in Flint a few years back after the Delphi bankruptcy but canceled it because it was going to rain. Maybe they don't have the follow-through for armed revolution.
- Craig
"free market" is a fairy-tale for children .. perhaps then lets not call it "protectionism", because what it really is is "building /up" country's industry, power, "investing" in one's country ..... many people here DO NOT realize that dollar is broke - now tell me why.... does dollar need to be killed off to satisfy the notion of "free markets" for globalized unelectable corporations,...

Wow, the a geeky aircraft tour sounds fun too! Maybe you can stop by the Wordcamp Anniversary party at night on the Pier 38.

My Mom's in town visiting from NY...and seriously, Robert, like every 5 seconds she keeps telling me how much I'd love it up there, based on the music and websites and social media I'm into. What would you say? Is it just a sweet a place for geeks as San Fran? (I'm in Colorado though) lol
- Carlton Hackett
Oh Robert, you'll be in my area, when I heading up to yours. :)
- Daynah
I'm waiting for you to get tired, hungry, need to pee etc. to hear you say -- "Talk amongst yourselves." You are after all in NY
- Kim Feraday
Robert, do you ever make it up to Boston at all? I noticed some folks from Rackspace are at MIT this week, was wondering if you ever get a chance to make it up this way (or think you could this summer/later this year)?
- Sam Houston
Sam: once in a while. I don't have current plans to go to Boston, but since MIT is there and lots of interesting things are going on in Boston, would love to come again.
- Robert Scoble
> Carlton: New York is an awesome city, but for geeks? I still think SF wins and wins big.
- Robert Scoble
Carlton: with one exception: NY is the media center of the world, so if you want to be in TV, advertising, music, etc then it'll be hard to beat NY. I know some geeks who do nothing but write software for the digital signs you see in Times Square, too. Hard to do that anywhere else in the world.
- Robert Scoble
Ahh, that makes sense then. I think I'd love the cultural aspect of NY, but I'd probably have a better "geek" time down in Cali. ;-) Thanks!

I might be down for a FF meet-up tonight.

- Carlos Ayala
Yeah, if you are doing a lot of indoor shots, any of the 50mm primes is a must have.

Carlos, I was referencing prime as in 'primary lens', not fixed focal length http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... Basically, a good base lens that I can learn with and add to once I get my sea legs.

I'll go against the grain and say the Sigma 30mm. =) 50mm on a crop cam like the XSi doesn't give you "general purpose." It gives you a nice portrait lens.
- ronin
And my opinion/recommendation still stands for indoor shooting.

when discussing glass.....prime will always mean fixed focal.
- Carlos Ayala
I agree. My 50mm (Canon EF 50 f/1.8) is excellent, albeit cheap. I use it everywhere I go. I'm also looking at Tamron's 10-24mm and Sigma's 10-20mm wide angle lenses.
- Brandon Titus
No seriously. You should get a prime fixed focal lens. They are clear and relatively cheap.
- Evan Travers
I'll be saving up for whatever I wind up getting, so the budget is flexible.
- FFing Enigma
then for sea legs, i recommend the 24-105L
- Carlos Ayala
If your budget is south of $500 then the Tamron 28-75 gets good recommendations. Kinda lose out on the wide side though.
- ronin
I have a 52mm f1.8. It's pretty good. I'm with Carlos here, what made you decide you need a prime? I find my 18-50 gets most of the shooting, even though it's not as pricey as the prime, sometimes I want to get more detail, or more angle.

i'd also mention the 24-70 f/2.8 ...but utlimately it depends on what you are shooting and under what conditions.
- Carlos Ayala
I love my Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens, which is what's on my XSi most of the time. Thanks to the cropped sensor, it's almost the same as a 50mm lens on a 35mm sensor. If you do want a prime lens, that is.
- Paul Haahr
80-90% of my shooting is outdoors, that's what I enjoy most. Again, I was using the apparently-no-longer-popular meaning of prime aka a primary lens or one that could be used in combination with other lenses in the future. I understand that prime = fixed focal for most people now, and I'm sorry for the confusion.
- FFing Enigma
If you've got the cash, then the two that Carlos suggests make for great primary lenses. If you'd rather be a bit less spendy then either the Tamron 17-50 or 28-75 will work just as well depending on whether you want to go wide or long.

While I would love to have an L series lens (or several), I'm hard pressed to be able to rationalize one, especially with this camera body. Seems kinda like teaching your kid to drive in a lambo =)
- FFing Enigma
Have you considered renting some lenses and seeing how they work for you?
- τorƍue
I have Tim, but there aren't any places that do so where I live. I would have to rent one/some and have them shipped in which I find off putting for some reason. If someone can recommend a decent mailorder rental place, I'd definitely like to try some out.

Getting a prime lens will make you think a little differently about photography. I love my Sigma 30mm f/1.4. Try a bunch of shots at the store; that's what I did.

All flash + click for each photo + only 1 photo per story = No where near as good as the Big Picture! Sorry I agree with bnoise, just the flash part in itself means that is sucks. I would love to see a real photoblog from NYT, but this isn't going to cut it.
- Rachel Lea Fox
@Rachel ? It's got more than one photo per story...
- ronin
that is pretty cool. i hate flash too. ny times is very ahead of the game techonogically. i still like timesonline a bit more as far as the far reaching/wider scope of the news articles

ronin - the current post, may 18, only has one even if you click on the "read more" which you shouldn't have to do. There is no reason to not have the full text on the front page. Also on the posts that do have more photographs (which I now see) the numbered line can easily be interpreted as that is the number of post pages you are moving through. That placement area is often used for...

Rachel - The May 18 post has 12 photos. Not sure why you're only seeing one but I agree that the UI may cause some initial confusion. The number line most people associate with multi-page content which somewhat works in this case since the photos are the content. Plus they group the number line with the photo and not the text below. It's definitely not as clean of a layout as The Big...
