About the impact of COTS on warfare. Military drones used by the US army transmit their imagery unencrypted via a 'non-standard' link. However, there appears to exist cheap COTS software that can easily capture this sensitive data.

Interesting read if you're dealing with managing risk of failure in critical (software) systems, or if you're designing complex smart systems that take care of critical activities for humans or businesses. Annotated link http://www.diigo.com/bookmar...

”If we don’t want people to depend on automated systems, we need to turn them off sometimes,” [Martyn] Thomas observes. ”People, after all, are the backup systems, and they aren’t being exercised.”

Tutorial for configuring the Protégé ontology editor to operate in client-server mode. The server serves and hosts the ontology, while users interact with the server through the Protégé client that connects over Java RMI with the server.

Very good tutorial if you want to know what are ontologies and how to start creating them with Protégé. This tutorial is better tailored to the beginning ontology explorer than the pizza ontology example, which goes one level deeper. Thanks to Lamia and Frédéric for pointing to this resource!

Yet another type of aggregators in the Web 2.0 realm: Chat Chatter sniffs the Internet for links to your blog posts, and offers a means to create comments on your blog from the original comments. A link to the original comment is also added. There are native plugins for Drupal and WordPress, and you can use the ChatChatter scripts for many other blog technologies.

- Yanosh94
I did not get your invatiation... can you send me again? coyaniv@gmail.com
- coyan ##
@coyan and others - The invites may take up to a couple days to be processed at Google. From the "Invite" wave: "Invitations will not be sent immediately. We have a lot of stamps to lick". Check your Gmail account regularly - that's what I did for a couple months anyway :-)
- Olivier Biot

current conversation in Twitter server room: "You sure these are hot-swappable?" "Who left that fracking cup of tea on there . . ." GZZZZZZZZSSPT

Play nice Ed, we have no idea if that happened again :)
- Rob Diana
have stopped asking/tweeting/posting about it being down
- ffcode
so what are the odds that they are launching lists to everyone today?
- Rob Diana
Hmm, the list functionality might be going live, true. Would have thought the beta programme might run a little longer. Perhaps this is setting a precedent for the future, like Apple, whenever there's a new release/product taken live the site goes down for 30mins? :)
- Ed Richardson
well.. my stream is on, but no lists..(yet?)
- Naor Mark
nope, no lists for me either. well, a man can dream.
- Rob Diana
well honestly, can't see myself starting to build lists in the current method.. so i can wait:)
- Naor Mark
I'ts not a matter of "open source", it's a matter of deciding how you as an organization define the way to manage "openness" in your context, be it by open sourcing, offering open APIs, initiating or joining product and business ecosystems, or simply being rigidly closed for very good reasons.
