Hadn't thought of that, Josh. I've poking around for something in Linux that doesn't choke when recording from Skype. Might have to do just what you said.

Not that Skype, Sparky. The kind that supposed to throw my voice across the world. It makes me sound like I'm broadcasting from the 1890s.

Skype (the dog) has enough love to go around for Skype (the VOIP provider).

Yeah, I had read on several guides that I need to use a USB mic. So, I guess I need a new mic.

Matthew, I think that mic is great, but it is one pricey mic, and unless SP and Amber have a mixer with an XLR input (or some other device), they will be needing that too.

YOWZA! $300 for a mic? For that kind of money, I'd get a netbook first. Thanks, Matthew, but that's a bit out of range, especially if what's going on may be a problem with my machine and not my mic.

The PR-40 is actually is an amazing mic for the price, and if they can afford it, I would jump on it. It's not just the mic though. For my own experience, there are many other things to spend money on as well, but that mic, or any other good mic that can defeat some background noise paired with a simple XLR input like a M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB Audio Interface ($199) or a Shure X2U XLR To USB Microphone Adapter ($129) should do the trick for one person. There are also decent, not great, mics that do the USB translation for you. Alesis makes a USB Podcast Microphone Kit for example ($99). Another pretty good mic is the MXL 2006 Studio Condenser Microphone ($99), but get a stand and the shock mount to prevent noise from things like bumping your desk.

Any vid / aud recording I do on my computer mic truly stinks. I saw a review once on an Alesis podcasting kit that was pretty positive and Alesis is famous for making quality stuff at a good price. The kit was around a $100. I will see if I can find it.

I'll try reinstalling Skype and see if that makes a difference. But I've already started backing up any data to the external HD in preparation of a reinstall.
