Something that has always mystified me: the prevalent idea that the majority of Americans have that [fill-in-the-blank-catastrophe] "could never happen here" simply because such has never occurred to or around them.
Terrorist attack? Not in my backyard! Well, if you don't count 1995 and 2001.

And now I realize that there are a number of people here on FF who weren't even alive when Mount Saint Helens darkened the skies way back when. I was in elementary school in Illinois when the mountain blew, and the ash turned the bright morning sky dark for hours.

Mt. St. Helen's- I was a working girl :) - Hurricane Agnes hit the summer we moved - stalled all sewers- eww. Glad we got out of there to higher grounds.
