Why People Aren't Going to Concerts Anymore
"Pollstar, the trade publication for the concert biz, says people "may be turned off by piggish top-tier prices, resentful of ticket add-on fees, and downright angry when they hear about discounted tickets after they have paid full price." All true, but people will suffer through all that to see a band they really love. So maybe this isn't "the economy" or horrible ticket monopolies engaged in price-gouging and just a batch of bad acts." - Steven Perez from Bookmarklet
Should be "Why People Aren't Going to Expensive Concerts Anymore" - Carmen wBabby
++ Carmen - I've been to about 10 in the last 5 months, and only one was over $25. Small venues, good bands -- so much better of an experience. - Jennifer Dittrich
1UP Carmen (and Jennifer). Concerts that are $15 or less? Are usually really well attended here. - Jandy
prices for tickets and parking and concessions are stupidly high. $20 for unguarded parking in an unlit lot? $10 for a cup of tap water? $140 tickets for the upper balcony? NO. - Joe The Sausage
Joe is going to the wrong places. $10 tickets plus free street parking plus $5 beer = the way to go. - Jandy
Exactly Jennifer, Jandy and Jill (J ladies) - Carmen wBabby
@Jandy: i haven't gone to the kind of concert i just cited since the early 90s. i only go where i get in free (on the guest list) or for less than $15 now. - Joe The Sausage
I just passed up seeing one of my favorite bands - Tool - because nosebleed seats were $50 BEFORE all the fees (would have ended up being $75 per ticket), plus the price of parking at the venue is $20 and there's not a single alcoholic beverage in the place for under $8. I just couldn't do it. I remember the days of seeing Tool in Memorial Auditorium in Sac. A small place, the "beer garden" was a roped-off area of lawn with $2 drafts, and the tickets were $15 apiece gen admin. Oh I miss those days. - Hookuh Tinypants
Amanda, that's one reason I try to go to as many small/local shows as I can - some day some of these bands are going to hit it big, and I won't be able to afford to see them anymore. :) - Jandy
Yeah, I've started to focus on smaller shows again with more local bands or bands touring through that I've heard good buzz on. I used to do that a lot more when I was younger and I remember stumbling onto a lot of great music, even if the bands never made it big. So worth it. - Hookuh Tinypants
When I visit my hipster friends, I'm like "oh people still go to concerts!" because they always know the cool cheap shows. I can't wrap my mind around > $50 tickets for a concert. - Lo the Baker
Maybe its because music in the last decade has really blown. - Geoff Schultz {TF}
I'm willing to go with that theory. :D - Steven Perez from IM
Music in the last decade has *not* really blown. Don't be silly. Corporate greed, however, has totally blown chunks. - Moody (Sweet FA 4 Life)
Muse totally filled the arena near here. 20k plus fans. Was AWESOME. - iTad
It is because the music industry is too much into what is safe and only goes for the over produced flash in the pan artists like Lady Gaga. She is the Justin Beiber for the older crowd and will have pathetic draws in just a few albums. Real music done by actual musicians is the only thing that can save them. Too bad they are not brave enough to take a risk on quality. - MarkCarras
@MarkCarras - Brave enough? Pop music has nothing to do with taking a risk, or quality. Pop music is all about feeding the masses sounds that distract them or make them forget about real world problems. Always has been. - Harold Cabezas

King - July 16, Willie Nelson - Friday, July 23, Slightly Stoopid & Cypress Hill - Friday, July 30, O.A.R - Thursday, Aug. 5, Counting Crows - Saturday, Aug. 7, Heart - Friday, Aug. 13, George Jones - Sunday, Aug. 15, & Billy Idol - Wednesday, Sept. 1 (of course, $10 is lawn seating, but where they're at (NTelos Pavillion), lawn seating is just as good, if not better than reserved) - chaz2b
