Cars: Top Gear to Build 70MPG Car Out of a 1971 VW Rabbit for $7,000
"Sure, you can get a fuel-efficient hybrid car, but it'll cost tens of thousands of dollars. That's too much for the Top Gear crew, who've set out to build a 70MPG car for only $7,000." - Steven Perez from Bookmarklet
That would be great, if I wanted a 38 year old boxy, ugly VW rabbit. - Jeff P. Henderson
Their numbers are a little off. A Civic Hybrid gets closer to 50MPG, not 40, you can get 40MPG with a standard Civic. Also the Civic Hybrid gets better mileage on the freeway than the Prius, at least it did up until 2008. - Jeff P. Henderson
Good point Mark. I think I'd rather pay $25K and get all of the modern amenities and safety features as well as a brand new car. - Jeff P. Henderson
Omigosh. I grew up in that Rabbit. Miami Blue is what my dad called it. It was so janky that we had to crawl in and out through the hatch. He had installed toggle switches to get everything to run. But, run it did. FOR-EH-VAR! PS: My 93 Honda Civic del Sol gets 40 mpg AND has an air bag. Not sure about the other safety stuff. I'm sure it's missing quite a few. But the top comes off! :-D - Lisa L. Seifert | FHG™
