I sometimes wonder, in all the usual social media hubbub, if somehow the greater question is missed: can the economy sustain the internet as we now know it? How can we be sure that services like Twitter or FriendFeed will be able to weather what is coming?
It's all well and good that people are able to argue things like followers and stats and blogging, but what happens if the economic screws get tightened and services start falling a la the Dot Com Bust from a decade ago?

ding! right now there are no clear signs what the business model that can sustain all of this great content and great software. Unless there's a breakthrough, the inflated expectation of what "should" be free is a powerful negative feedback loop. We may end up with radically less choices, and much lower quality. We may be in the "golden age" at the moment.
