Re: The biggest scam bankrupting business and the middle class - http://www.pbs.org/newshou...
"In terms of raising wages, there is one change we can make today that would profoundly affect millions of America's working families: Repeal exemptions to the Fair Labor Standards Act. Fair Labor Standards Act exemptions allow for legal child labor, paying disabled workers under minimum wages, and denying legions of non-salaried hourly workers overtime: http://www.dol.gov/elaws/esa/f... Nick, you recently advocated increasing the threshold for which workers are exempt from FLSA exemptions: https://twitter.com/nickhanaue... But as child labor and disabled workers will likely not reach those thresholds, they will still be exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act. I wonder if you would talk some about why you advocate for raising thresholds for which workers are exempt instead of for repealing Fair Labor Standards Act exemptions outright? I also wonder if you have ever claimed exemptions from the FLSA for your own workers? If so, why? If not, why not?" - sime0n

Also, legions of hourly workers don't make overtime wages. These three things (child labor, no minimum wages, no overtime) are all legal due to exemptions to the Fair Labor Standards Act: http://www.dol.gov/elaws... In other words, in 2015 America, it's totally legal to pay a child less than minimum wage to work 60 hours a week. Happens all the time, like this: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014... Why do we get so upset that they are, basically, smug sociopaths? It's their job description to be that way." "I think vcaguy is saying that certain things exist only as ideals. Free markets don't defend themselves, we use the state (via taxes) to provide security (via collectively controlled and cooperatively managed militaries). A true free market would defend itself, via its own private militaries. Until that happens (aka NWO), no market will ever be truly free, as you and I and everyone else are taxed to defend them. Similarly, the law does not apply itself. The law is applied by individuals, who themselves are flawed. So saying 'equal justice for all' supposes that judgment can be meted out impartially, free of corruption of our own natures, unerring, infallible. The icon of Lady Justice wears a blindfold to represent the laws ability to apply itself equally, regardless of race or gender or religion or social status, etc. This video is a test to see if the law applies to those responsible for applying it, to see if equal justice for all (like free markets) exist only as ideals, or as..." - sime0n

"Fair" means every hourly worker on this list, truckers, farmers, computer workers; everyone, gets overtime: http://www.dol.gov/elaws/esa/f... Exemptions to the FLSA need to be repealed! Until that happens, as a worker, do yourself, and the next generation, a favor: Don't fall for Mr. Hanauer's narrative. "A company secures a contract/investment, they hire a vendor to get the work done. If the vendor does not have the staff to do the work, they hire an agency, which in turn hires workers to fill the ranks. This insulates the work from the worker in interesting ways. For example there are states (WA,CA) in which tech workers are exempt from overtime wages. Working 80ish hour weeks is a symptom of these agencies not having to pay overtime to their workers. "Seriously, have you ever met an hourly worker who didn't really want overtime for hours worked over 40? Which of these statements sounds fair to you: It would be fair to pay all hourly workers overtime. It would be fair to pay no hourly workers overtime. It would be fair to pay some hourly workers overtime, but not others. The first and second are different, but fair. The third is by definition unfair. The third is unfair by design. Overtime should be applied to all hourly workers fairly, otherwise we should remove Fair from the title of the law and just call it the Labor Standards Act." - sime0n

The state law is based off federal law which you can find here: http://www.dol.gov/whd... My question (thank you so much for your time today!) is: Do you think it's fair to deny overtime to workers building Microsoft's products? Is exempting workers from the Fair Labor Standards Act fair? I've talked with my legislators about this, all of which claim they didn't know it was happening, none of which want to help me repeal it (they are all Democrats by the way). I've written about my experience working with my representatives here: http://uitw.org I'm of the opinion that all non-salaried workers deserve overtime pay for hours worked over 40 per week.
