The traditional role of 'old media' was just this ... a newspaper will not feed a family of 5 in Africa but a well written article may raise awareness of their plight. Perhaps the greatest benefit the web can give society is the ability to share information with greater speed and reach, for example enabling geographically dispersed scientists to work together to come up with a better, cheaper way to grow rice.
