Official Google Blog: Our position on California's No on 8 campaign
"While we respect the strongly-held beliefs that people have on both sides of this argument, we see this fundamentally as an issue of equality. We hope that California voters will vote no on Proposition 8 -- we should not eliminate anyone's fundamental rights, whatever their sexuality, to marry the person they love." -- Cheers to Sergey and Google for speaking out on this issue. Fiscal Conservative vs. Tax & Spend Liberal - Be the signal
I dislike taxes as much as everyone else, but I always pay my bills. How else can we as a country pay our bills without the taxes? Debts always come due and the responsible thing to do is to suck it up and pay 'em. - Kevin C. Tofel
Correction - in Canada ordinary citizens can go bankrupt if they develop health problems - I know people who have. There is NO single tier health care system in Canada. Tell me that the next time you have to pay out of pocket for prescription medication, or hand over your VISA at the emergency or they won't admit you because the ambulance ride costs money...or you have to go to Buffalo for an MRI and pay $$$...sorry to vent but I keep seeing these misconceptions and I'm getting a little tired of it. - Kevin Cearns
I hate oversimplified commentary like this. I am not going to defend current government spending, because that bugs me to no end. But, the idea that Clinton was responsible for a surplus is laughable. Read this link for a little enlightenment. http://www.letxa.com/article... - Jeremy Hall
I don't particularly hold to any party vision. And I'm not promoting a version of Canada. I'm merely pointing out fact. It is one thing to aspire to a particular reality, another entirely to assume that reality already exists. - Kevin Cearns

White House is Briefed: Phoenix About to Announce "Potential For Life" on Mars
"It would appear that the US President has been briefed by Phoenix scientists about the discovery of something more "provocative" than the discovery of water existing on the Martian surface. "..... Holy. Fucking. SHIT. - dave mcclure from Bookmarklet
Wow! That would be something else! For real! Mars Phoenix FTW!!! However, later in the article, they make the following statement: "Scientists are keen to point out however, that this secretive news will in no way indicate the existence of life (past or present) on Mars; Phoenix simply is not equipped make this discovery." Still AMAZING science! - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
would our president even know what they're talking about? And why would "the president" need to be "briefed" about this? Because if Martians have oil we'll need to bring them democracy first? - Adam Turetzky
If Phoenix has detected a carbon signature in the soil samples, it's huge. Provocative, indeed: we'd have to go and look for ourselves, most likely. But if we found life so close to Earth, and under such hostile conditions, it would speak strongly to life being more common than previously imagined. - Chris Baskind
Wow, this is MASSIVE. :) Very cool to see this story unfold. - sergiooo

Turns out the ice they previously found was in a glass, with scotch. And there's a seriously pissed off martian who wants his/her/its drink back :D. Seriously, the "wet chemistry" sensors won't detect organic compounds or "life building blocks" like sugars or aminoacids, but there's lots of unexpected things up there, apparently. It seems that Mars is way more Earth-like than previously thought. Time to pick up "Pale Blue Dot" again, folks. - dario
This time around Bush will tell the public that he was given fals information ....... - John Blanton from twhirl
Reading a newspaper article this morning - pictures suggested new sediment deposit since last imaging of the same area. Am I right in thinking that means liquid water has moved across part of the surface of Mars in the seven years between missions? That's pretty freaking amazing if you ask me. Dunno about life, but it seems almost inevitable we'll find some kind of organic compounds there sooner or later, even if it IS stuff we've deposited ourselves! - Slippy "Threadsbane" Lane
Bush will never believe there is life in Phoenix; he is a Texan, after all. He won't hear anything after that. - ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ

"Jott for iPhone is the ultimate mobile notepad that turns your voice into notes. Just tap the record screen and leave a note with your voice, Jott will then turn that note into text and add it to your Jott notepad or any of your lists. To get the same satisfaction of completing something on a paper list, cross off any item by swiping your finger across it on your Jott list. No matter where you are, now adding something to your notepad is as quick and easy as saying “Get strawberries for dessert.”" - Paul Buchheit from Bookmarklet

Everyone talks about "social" but ppl's use of this term is rly broad. What r examples of web actions that r NOT SOCIAL? Let's start there.
The online banking I do is typically not social, though a la Wesabe, we see some interesting applications of group data. - Brian Oberkirch
porn and banking.are the first things that came to my head. - chartreuse
I hear porn, banking, healthcare, but that even these are becoming social in some ways. @bokardo says "social" may be a 2nd order motivation. So does the user's intention matter? - Brynn M Evans
wesabe:social banking::google:social search! PornTube:porn videos::YouTube:trampoline videos. - Chris Messina
its not the 'social' word thats wrong, its that its not being applied to words other than media. my thoughts: http://is.gd/PsX - Jeremy Toeman
Wesabe makes banking somewhat social. If you could BabyCenter as healthcare it's social. Porn is totally social (AdultFriendFinder) - Clay Newton
I can't really think of things that aren't social, more like a lot of poorly implemented "social things". - Clay Newton
Clay: are you saying everything you do online is (or should be) social? - Brynn M Evans
Chris: you know how I feel about Google as a social search site...Unless you're supporting Clay's notion that these all those categories are poorly implemented "social things" - Brynn M Evans
Jeremy: True, "social" is a nebulous term, but I was thinking more about listing non-social actions people do online (whether or not through "social media"). - Brynn M Evans
@Brynn: I was mostly being facetious because I know how you feel! ;) Wesabe benefits from people sharing, so it feels social, but I wouldn't say that it IS social. Definitions again...! - Chris Messina
I'm trying to figure out what I do that doesn't have some "social" component and it's just varying degrees of suck. - Clay Newton
@chris Wesabe has the whole "Groups" thing and the "Goals" thing... they aren't directly social finance thangs, but they are social components. I was thinking Zopa and Prosper count as two "social" finance services, then there's a whole host of online trading social utils. - Clay Newton
I could accept that there is a range of "social" online. BUT: do we treat those different social activities differently? Like, do we design technology to support the range of "social" differently? As a researcher, is it important to study the different classes of "social" individually, or lump them together? - Brynn M Evans
I think the critical thing is that "social" is a series of features applied to an application or utility, and the social aspects that are managed are specific to the type of utility, the implementation and the zeitgeist. - Clay Newton
It's funny that so many people are willing to talk about a "range" of social and read social aspects into all of our activities. If we say that Google is social and that online banking is social because somehow they involve input from other people, then why shouldn't I call my own personal thoughts social (utilize language, a social convention - often involve a component of internal dialogue). - Sanjay
