Andrew Chen does some interesting analysis of SNS/web services using Google Insights queries as a proxy for usage -- see maps for Digg (top left), Twitter (top right), Facebook (bottom). note: i think he's missing some data here on overall population density & broadband penetration, however the data is nonetheless fascinating... nice job andrew :)

Correction - in Canada ordinary citizens can go bankrupt if they develop health problems - I know people who have. There is NO single tier health care system in Canada. Tell me that the next time you have to pay out of pocket for prescription medication, or hand over your VISA at the emergency or they won't admit you because the ambulance ride costs money...or you have to go to Buffalo for an MRI and pay $$$...sorry to vent but I keep seeing these misconceptions and I'm getting a little tired of it.

If Phoenix has detected a carbon signature in the soil samples, it's huge. Provocative, indeed: we'd have to go and look for ourselves, most likely. But if we found life so close to Earth, and under such hostile conditions, it would speak strongly to life being more common than previously imagined.

Turns out the ice they previously found was in a glass, with scotch. And there's a seriously pissed off martian who wants his/her/its drink back :D. Seriously, the "wet chemistry" sensors won't detect organic compounds or "life building blocks" like sugars or aminoacids, but there's lots of unexpected things up there, apparently. It seems that Mars is way more Earth-like than previously thought. Time to pick up "Pale Blue Dot" again, folks.

Reading a newspaper article this morning - pictures suggested new sediment deposit since last imaging of the same area. Am I right in thinking that means liquid water has moved across part of the surface of Mars in the seven years between missions? That's pretty freaking amazing if you ask me. Dunno about life, but it seems almost inevitable we'll find some kind of organic compounds there sooner or later, even if it IS stuff we've deposited ourselves!

My dad had an interesting glass item when I was a kid. It held water and had tubes that came out of the top. Maybe it had something to do with the Flying Spaghetti Monster, I don't know, but his friends would always ask him to get it out and they'd sit around it for hours listening to Machine Head on 8-track.

@chris Wesabe has the whole "Groups" thing and the "Goals" thing... they aren't directly social finance thangs, but they are social components. I was thinking Zopa and Prosper count as two "social" finance services, then there's a whole host of online trading social utils.

I could accept that there is a range of "social" online. BUT: do we treat those different social activities differently? Like, do we design technology to support the range of "social" differently? As a researcher, is it important to study the different classes of "social" individually, or lump them together?

I think the critical thing is that "social" is a series of features applied to an application or utility, and the social aspects that are managed are specific to the type of utility, the implementation and the zeitgeist.

It's funny that so many people are willing to talk about a "range" of social and read social aspects into all of our activities. If we say that Google is social and that online banking is social because somehow they involve input from other people, then why shouldn't I call my own personal thoughts social (utilize language, a social convention - often involve a component of internal dialogue).
