"The Cruise-related madness has the celeb-factor, but Headley also has lots to say about the more sinister things he observed during his time in Scientology, including the violence perpetrated by Church boss David Miscavige against employees, which we first heard about in the St Petersburg Times exposé, and the lengths the Church is willing to go to in order to stop members speaking out." - Edward Zwart from Bookmarklet

que, Jimminy? - Eivind
Which logically errors in particular is hilarious? - Edward Zwart
ugh, c'mon, NPR, don't let me down like this :( - Kamilah Gill
1. To regard a religion as sinister and dangerous is down right silly and not very logical. People can be sinister and dangerous based on their interpretations of anything. The hatred comes not from the scriptures, but from the interpretations of the scriptures, just as much as one can pass his beliefs by voice. Dawkins clearly said that religion should be treated" with ridicule hatred and contempt." - Jimminy
2. "If I said to a Protestant, or a Quaker, or a Muslim, that I respect your religion even though I don't believe it I'd be telling a lie." ~ Hitchens WTF? Noone is asking you to respect their belief, just respect that person no matter what they believe. This choice of words is down right appalling to me. - Jimminy
All I can gather is that you consider their positions illogical because you happen to disagree with them. - Edward Zwart
Edward, I agree with Dawkins on many points but the ridicule and hatred no, but they've also suggested that religion makes people sinister and evil, which is illogical, when Dawkins who claims no religion, promotes sinister and evil actions. And Hitchens was just stupid, no one asks you to respect their belief, most people just seek to be respected. - Jimminy
I would argue with you on your last point, but I'm trying to maintain the chip lead at present... - Edward Zwart
Edward, yes, there are those that seek to have their beliefs respected, but to lower oneself to the standards of others is no way to live. The majority however aren't this way. - Jimminy
So, it's gone from "no one" to a minority. I am not convinced that Hitch's position is illogical. - Edward Zwart
You certainly subscribe to a different definition than me of both "hilarious" and "logical errors", Jimminy. - Eivind
"Laughable" and "contradictory to ones own remarks"? Dawkins claims that religion is responsible for sinister and dangerous things, when, as a person with out religion, he states that religion should be treated "with ridicule, hatred, and contempt." I would call all of those things sinister and dangerous, which are the same things he is trying to attack. That is a laughable case. As far... more... - Jimminy
"...no one asks you to respect their belief, most people just seek to be respected." Bullshit. There are certainly Christians in the US who are so very interested in having everyone respect their beliefs, that they go to court to try to pass them off as science. - Christopher A Carr
Christopher, "MOST" is a very important term, and yes I know it's contradictory to "no one" sweeping generalizations are never correct, but they are easy to make and return responses. Athiests are just as bad, any group of people will have radicals that do push the issues, whether they should or not. - Jimminy
"Athiests are just as bad..." Atheists are trying to pass off science as theology in Sunday schools? Perhaps you could provide an example of well-funded atheist groups attempting to systematically undermine science and the education system. What do you mean by "just as bad?" - Christopher A Carr
Christopher, it may help if you don't fragment what I say and then try and shove words in my mouth. Your remark, is what is just as bad as the religious, they have radicals that feel they can throw their weight around, and shove words in other peoples mouths without, that person realizing it. That's not going to fly with me. - Jimminy
Here's the sentence: "Athiests are just *as bad* [presumably, "as bad" as Christians who attempt to pass off creationism as science], any group of people will have radicals that do push the issues, whether they should or not." -- What are "radical" atheists doing that's comparable to the christian attempt to deprive children of a proper biology education? They're sometimes mean? Is that the extent of it? - Christopher A Carr
Christopher, your presumption was wrong about what I meant, and also your broad generalization that all Christians think this way, it's the Fundamentalist(radical) Christians that promote creationism as science, to try to spread their view(propagandizing it). Radical Atheists like Dawkins, Hitchens, and Myers, have all done the same thing spreading hate towards religions, and choosing... more... - Jimminy
Jimminy: What is "radical" atheist "propaganda" doing to anyone, other then hurting feelings? - Christopher A Carr
Dude these out spoken guys are defending the Realm, if someone does not oppose those radicals then the world for Normals is lost. Radical Rights like to use any lame excuse to point at Any opposition and say Oh My Oh My that guy is so bad for opposing us they must be evil propagandizing people. When in fact opposing all right nut jobs is just seeking a level ground to work and behave... more... - ThatDBD
Chris, Promoting hatred, look at Dawkins quote. But it also acts as an inflammatory action against the majority of the religious, which enters a feed back loop to further inflame itself. I disassociate myself from this kind of atheist, I'm open about my choice, but that doesn't mean I want to be identified as someone who deny's religion. I've face physical harm, for my choice, and the relation it shares with these people. WTF? - Jimminy
What are the manifestation of this alleged "hatred?" Also, I very much dislike certain memeplexes which have roots in the Bronze Age, but I don't automatically hate the people who've suffered infection. Neither do Hitchens, Dawkins, et. al.. - Christopher A Carr
Alleged? Quote from Dawkins, "religion should be treated with ridicule, hatred, and contempt." - Jimminy
Oh Balderdash Dudes: Spirit energy is so true, Be some kind, Be some evil out there. But But But to take Evil or the occasional good and Godify or demonize it make that thing or those who are persuading You that they are front men for that thing to much power over your decision faculty for your self. To say No god or atheist - is to separate from those who would try and command your... more... - ThatDBD
The hatred of some set of memes isn't hatred toward people. What harm is being done to people, that's, for instance, comparable to the erosion of science education being perpetrated by christian groups? Is there any evidence that fans of Hitchens or Dawkins are committing crimes against, or otherwise violating the rights of, christians? - Christopher A Carr
ThatDBD: English, please. - Christopher A Carr
Translation of what DBD said, I guess he can clear everything up if I'm wrong. --- Any group is free to make the claim that when something good or bad occurs, they can call it an event of God or Satan. There are people who use these events as persuasive tools to persuade how one thinks. You offer subservience to religions. If you want to be free, you must choose a line in your freedom and to respect others freedoms. Love your neighbors and ignore propaganda. - Jimminy
Christopher, the erosion of science education, isn't actually being perpetrated, it's being attempted, it's a whole lot of talk and effort for naught. Thus, it does no more harm than what, Dawkins and Hitchens have done by attacking religion. The bus effort is what I embrace, it promotes knowledge with out forcing an opinion. There are ways to make a point without infuriating people, but far to many people are lazy and ignorant. You should be able to express yourself in respectful ways. - Jimminy
Jimminy: That they've yet to have all the success they continue to strive for certainly isn't attributable to the efforts of people with lots of "respect" for their absurd belief system. - Christopher A Carr
Christopher, I didn't say anything about respecting their belief, you express yourself in respectful ways, meaning in the courts you provide evidence against the fact, but you don't have to hate them or their choices otherwise. You can appeal for reason all you like and most people can understand it, but the natural reaction to an attack is to stop listening. If you continue to attack,... more... - Jimminy
Jimminy: Do you hate the Catholic church's stance on condoms? If not, why not? - Christopher A Carr
I'm apathetic to any religious views that don't effect my personal situation. I don't even know what their stance is, I'm guessing that condoms prevent God's will being done, making it equivalent to abortion, to their belief? If they tried to take them away I would fight that because that effects my personal opinion, but if they just tell their congregation that they can't use them, it's still up to those people to decide if they follow the voice of their leader or not. - Jimminy
Good job Jimmy: I wax two much flowery at times, practicing for a paperback writing career:--) Doing better on my CV though, cutting the crap there and just saying it. This slavery to belief of most of mankind is really rough. All belief's are now putting the screws to their followers, the result is going to be interesting. Mixing in this stuff is important because the patterns of... more... - ThatDBD
Jimminy: Catholicism in Africa, with its doctrine of humanae vitae, has grown by 20 times since 1980. More than 6% of people in Sub-Saharan Africa are infected with HIV. I guess the increasing number of impoverished African Catholics can "...decide if they follow the voice of their leader or not," but for some reason that doesn't lessen my utter disdain for the HRCC's position, which surely is killing people. I don't find that I have to be included in a group of people being abused in order to take offense. - Christopher A Carr
... similarly, it's predominately Abrahamic religious sensibilities that are responsible for illogical policies in America that have profoundly affected gay American's lives for the worse. "My personal situation" isn't directly affected, true... - Christopher A Carr

Nick: Brave, forthright, morally upstanding atheists, and lily-livered, pseudo-atheist, religious apologists? Heavens, no. ;-) (<---poking a bit of fun at myself there also, Jimminy, in case it isn't clear...) - Christopher A Carr
Jimminy, do you think Dawkins is evil for saying that religion should be ridiculed? When he says it should be treated with contempt, do you think he means the idea, or the people who practice religion? There are people who ridicule (and treat with contempt) all kinds of things they disagree with (for example, in matters of public policy), but they just don't SAY that they think such things SHOULD be ridiculed, etc.. Do you reserve the same kind of judgement for people who do that? - Edward Zwart

I saw this video take some heat over on the atheist livejournal community, where folks tend to think that old Pat Condell is a screaming racist or whatever, but honestly, when I listen to him talk, I definitely feel his frustrations. In particular, I agree with him about the fact that any institution, even religion, exists on its own behalf and any outward effect (positive or negative) that it has on the world is merely a byproduct - a social excretion, if you will. - Lucas Parker

I am against laws requiring a minimum amount of clothing for women, but for laws banning too much. It's not inconsistent... :) - Edward Zwart
I'm not really sure how I feel about a governmental judgment on clothing, but I do think private businesses and groups should be allowed to. I think starting with the burka could lead to a slippery slope. Btw Ed, California does have minimum clothing laws.
