Email. Google Reader, FF, then Press Display (newspapers) when I get to work.
- cecily
FF. set as home default in Firefox. I rarely ever get to the papers (the online version that is...I stopped buying print versions 2 years ago), maybe midday I might flick onto one of two sites
- Duncan Riley
Lately, quick scan of Google reader, newspaper and FF by mid-morning. Will change when I get an iPhone though.

Twitter first and I dont check FriendFeed until the evening since there is no native iPhone or Blackberry Client

What is this thing called "newspapers"? ;-)

Its a double edged sword for the guy taking this girl on the date - as the night wears on, the girl gets easier but also smaller breasted :/
- Zach Landes
I dunno about you but that'd be some warm wine or tequila after awhile.
- Akiva Moskovitz
She looks like she's enjoying that wine a little too much
- Bwana ☠
Yeah, the arm wine wouldn't work too great, but if you filled it with Captain Morgan's and drank cold Dr. Pepper all night, you wouldn't even notice the liquor was warm.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
i've been laughing over this the bra for the past week now. if they sold it in my size, i'd totally buy it. though my husband said that if they did the beer would get warm before i could drink it all. :/
- Admiral Anika
I guess the next item will have to be beer goggles.
- Jesse P. Luna
Chris, you just turned this into a site about nothing. ;)
- Kevin C. Tofel
I think the beer goggles come free with any beer you buy Jesse ;)

Great way to have cheap, but warm beer.

Going to be popular in the UK since they like warm beer.

Ridiculous, not meaning to be mean by liking it, but it definitely does show that the border's radiiation detection equipment is very sensitive and also shows how much we need to find a cure for cancer, if we can get rid of cancer people won't have to worry about being radioactive.

Reading NY Web 2.0 lineup of speakers. Poor Dan Lyons. They have to use AKA Fake Steve Jobs in his bio. How embarrassing when your AKA is more important than you are.
I figure it may just be my phone, I get about 12 hours of standby time and 2 hours of twittering before I need to recharge :(
- Andrew Fielding
from twhirl
I'm surprised at these small numbers I see on the net about standby time. I recently took my iPhone on the road for two days, and it stood those 40 hours of standby (with about one hour of websurfing and phone calls) pretty well.
- Brome
Just turn down the brightness on the screen really much and use auto adjust. That helps quite a bit.
- Svartling
My list has a secret: I only attend "must attend" events and you can see on my list which events I am attending. :-) Seriously, though, what kind of event are you looking for? Where?
- Robert Scoble
I always enjoy looking at Scoble's Upcoming list. ;)
- Daynah
lol, that might be worth doing actually - going through your "attend" conferences. About which events, well i'm ok for the UK & Europe but i'd like to know which ones are worth travelling across the pond for to meet & get to know the movers & shakers of the web & blogosphere.
- Zee.
@Brian, have to say - never heard of them & i can't find any info...not a good sign.
- Zee.
ps. Robert, i'm assuming you're not going to be in London at any time before the end of the year. Is the next time you're in Europe going to be for Le Web?
- Zee.
My list is up here: http://upcoming.yahoo.com/user... Zee, not sure when I'll be in London. I'm going to be in Berlin, Germany Tuesday (this week). Does that count as Europe? I'm trying to cut down on travel so not sure I'll be at Le Web. Gotta talk to Maryam about that one.
- Robert Scoble
The "must attend" conference coming up in Europe is this one: http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event... (Picnic). Also must attend? DLD in Germany. Le Web in Paris. Lift in Geneva. Reboot in Copenhagen.
- Robert Scoble
You know what, that "trick' has proven to be exactly what i was looking for. Thank you. And most definitely Germany counts! Wish I knew sooner. Dang..ok, will follow up tomorrow - cheers again.
- Zee.
awesome! UK & Europe I'm cool for...just the US I wanted to find out more about
- Zee.
My list shows events all around the world. Also, you can see how many people are attending. If you care about "must attend" events, just pick the popular ones and avoid the ones that don't have many people attending.
- Robert Scoble
Yeah, just a little difficult spotting locations sometimes because they aren't always in the name of the conference & there isn't a column for location which is a shame. But with the "attend" column, it's still far better than anything else I've found. The people attending is definitely helpful, i'm currently sticking to the over 100's.

Relates to the fact that the US economy continues to grow (abet at a modest rate) while the EU economies are slipping into negative growth.

Manufacturing index was way beyond early expectations, joins the overall positive momentum of recent weeks. Lets see the NAHB (house prices)index results, to be released tomorrow.
- Nir Ben Yona
ECB admitted our economic position wasn't as secure as they had expected which caused a drop in Euro-centric stocks. Also, US treasury says it isn't ruling out an active role in the currency market. US had some news, it wasn't good but it wasn't as bad as expected. But indexes and key earnings are due within the next 30 days so US dollar could swing back
- Steven Cains
The US controls the level of the dollar, ie. purposely low to boost exports. The EU controls NOTHING, ie. the Euro is high (and Europeans don't like that) only because the dollar is low (kept low on purpose by the Fed). USA = creative destruction, EU = rudderless ship
- William, CPU Media
The USD - EUR exchange rate is set by international markets and influenced by the interest rates set by the US Fed and the EU Central Bank. Both are focused on containing inflation expectations (there is a reason why the ECB is in Germany). The focus of the US Fed is NOT on interest rates.
- Martin Buhr
from twhirl
@William The US, and EU (and most countries) do not control the level of their dollar. As Martin points out, the exchange rate is set by market forces for the most part, but can be nominally influenced by the actions of a country's Reserve Bank.
- David Adam
Look at the spread in rates between the Fed and the ECB. Look at the articles in the Economist these past 3 months about the "abnormal" nature of said spreads. Market forces can be coerced and have been. Dollar weakness has been a deliberate US policy these past months and the markets have jumped on the bandwagon.
- William, CPU Media
The last answers are correct "textbook" answers. Markets don't happen in textbooks, they happen in real life. Enough theory, get with the program.
- William, CPU Media
Has to be Michael Phelps pushing the dollar up!
- João Almeida
@gregory Mysteriously indeed. Textbook explications rarely apply. "The markets still determine / Everything, like Greek gods, capriciously."
- William, CPU Media
When oil goes down the dollar goes up and vice versa. It's like a see-saw.
- Dave Winer
The ECB (Euro Bank) just changed its future tone on interest rates (i.e. instead of raising to fight inflation, it might start cutting). The US dollar immediately responded. It's no mystery. @Dave Winer: That's not necessarily true about oil and the dollar.
- Ben Turner
pricedingold.com = good site for permabear "end of the world" types. It's a 1970s throwback.
- William, CPU Media
The reasons textbook answers are in textbooks is that they (in general) right. If you want to believe that aliens are manipulating the currency exchange rate, knock yourself out... :) Also, oil sales are (for now) demoninated in dollars (i.e. you have to buy dollars on the international market if you want to buy oil). When the dollar is strong, this benifits the US. However, if the...

hedging has lowered on the fwd /future call within the commodities market. Thus risk to $$ is less., when risk is less, $$$ confidence is higher and thereby $$ flux's will be lower.
- Peter Dawson
@martin Economics is one of the few areas where textbook explications rarely play themselves out. It's not called "the dismal science" for nothing. As long as oil is denominated in dollars, the Fed's "benign neglect" can be wielded as an active policy, something that does not work with any other currency. As for books on finance: Taleb's are the best by far. ...and who said anything about aliens?
- William, CPU Media
@william,cpumedia So you´d rather own dollars than gold eh ? We might have a nice exchange between each other ( next to this great profit scheme I have with this Nigerian prince :-)
- peter huesken
Right now and until the end of this year, yes I'd rather have dollars.
- William, CPU Media
You CAN do it, and you'll feel so much better and be healthier longer because of it.:-)

That's awesome! I think 14-days means your done. I agree with Paul. You're a non-smoker now. Congrats!

Yay!! Go Mona!! Reward yourself with BACON! :-)
- Lisa L. Seifert
Thank you so much, guys. Your support has done more than any of you can ever imagine... Lisa: That's the problem, I'm replacing cigarettes with food! Can anyone say clothes too tight? LOL!
- Mona Nomura
wow.. thats great.. I relapsed after 10D :(-
- Peter Dawson
Seriuosly, not picking up a cigarette is SO hard. I'm looking into aides. I know studies show after three days, or seven days, or whatever, means you're no longer addicted, but it is SO not. I've been smoking 10+ years and now that I stopped, I realized how much of my daily routine, as well as emotions were tied into nicotine....
- Mona Nomura
keep it up. I quit jan. 1. It gets easier!
- Wes Hoogenboom
I haven't had a ciggie in almost a year and i still get the cravings, but nowhere near as bad. The gum does help a bit, but it's mostly pure stubborness that does it. If you can talk yourself into having a ciggie, you can talk yourself out of it.
- sergiooo
Go, Mona! 14 days means you're over the worst. No. Really- you are!
- Donna Mugavero
Aaron: I've always wanted to say that! I quit smoking for you, 'xxx' @Sergio: That's what I'm trying to do. Announcing it everywhere so I don't go back on my word, and tell myself: I.am.better. @Donna, thank you :)
- Mona Nomura
I'm proud of you Mona. You can do it, just hang in there. :)
- Dennis Jackson
Oh, and I quit smoking I guess it's been over a year ago now. That was right around when I started working out. I've never felt better. Never have cravings or anything.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
hmmm, this is getting uncomfortable. i'm still an outcast smoker :/
- mike
Rah: Ya, I'm looking into gyms lol. Currently, all I do is Yoga, and I go like.. uhhh once a month? HA @mike: Quit when you want to quit ;)
- Mona Nomura
I'm very proud of you. My father never managed to quit. Please keep trying.
- DGentry
Mona, not only can it be done, but with the kind of motivating support structure you've got here, you're bound to keep it up. U keepz us posted, k?
- Pete Delucchi
Denton, thank you so much :) My entire family is / was chain smokers.
- Mona Nomura
Always happy to hear of another person quitting!
- Marci Maleski
I thought getting support was a sign of weakness, but seriously, I don't think I could've done it w/out you guys... All my friends are smokers LOL
- Mona Nomura
Use the weakness as your strength, padawan. The force is strong with you, you can do it.
- Pete Delucchi
がんばれ!I gave up on trying to convince friends to stop smoking just because I knew how hard it was for them... If you're able to quit, major props to ya!

I'm guessing you have a different Chris Martin in mind. I had the name for 4 years before that bugger came along. ;)

Your computer & gadgets will love you all the more for it! And think of the computers and gadgets you can buy with all the money saved from not smoking... Just be careful with all that good (non frozen) food that suddenly tastes like something again :P
- Michael Leuker
Mona - The only thing I can add is that (I've been there FOUR times) ... It only takes ONE before you're buying a carton. You kinda get that feeling 'I'm havin a bad day ... if I only had one' ... The one doesn't do anything for the bad day ... and you're smokin' again. Keep it up! You can do it!!!!!
- Charlie Anzman
Thank you, Charlie. You don't know how hard it is!!
- Mona Nomura
well done, Mona! my parents were never able to go as much as three days, so i'm seriously impressed. keep it up!

Does that mean you are near home Sept 25-29?
- Brian Sullivan
Yes! I cancelled something cause I gotta see the family SOMETIME. Would love to see you in HMB that weekend. :-)

Can I get one for the body as well as the face?
- Dion Almaer
Very interesting. Hope they post the download link soon so that we can all play with it.
- Brady Brim-DeForest
It seems as if the main problem with most people in the examples shown is their forehead is too short or too narrow. Wonder if there's a subtle clue that big brains are beautiful there! :)
- Fa La La La Lindsay
@Jason - that's an interesting concept. Would you be more likely to trust the girl on the left or right? Would you be more likely to talk to either one of them at a party (or more intimidated by either one?).
- Fa La La La Lindsay
Notice that for all the women they soften the jaw, while squaring it for men. Everyone also gets a slightly thinner face and upturned almost smiling lips.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
@SB yeah and the forehead adjustment... almost like there is a triangle with the forehead at the point and they flip it so the chin is the bottom of the triangle... weird.
- Fa La La La Lindsay
They are different women! Blame Paul! : )
- Erhan Erdogan
Lindsay: whenever sketching generic faces, the face starts as an inverted triangle and the eyes appear a third of the way down from the top of the forehead; lips and nose appear below and above (respectively) a line 1/3 up from the chin. Looks like these pictures are rearranged to meet that particular school of drawing.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
That is interesting yet odd. Seems that the faces are slendered with the software.

This technology should be made available in eye glasses, just imagine how much better your work day can be!

I haven't read the paper, but I wonder if it adapts to different notions of "attractive" (that changes from culture to culture ...)
- Rui Pires
+1 @Claude I was thinking the same thing! Incorporate this software in wearable monitor glasses, and the whole world would be beautiful! I'll bet we can look for these on the shelves in the U.S. just before November. Social media and reality enhancement software have put Winston Smith out of a job.

The artist proportions were laid out by the Greeks as the perfect human, that's not being used here. This beautification engine, I think, builds on top of a previous study where some students tried to mathematically identify attractiveness. They had participants rate the attractiveness of head shots from yearbooks. What they found was there was a high correlation b/w the geometrically "average" face and high attraction. That "average" is based on the proportions of the di

stances between the individual elements of the face and their relative sizes. IIRC the software adjusts elements so they statistically/geometrically complement each other. It's not actually working toward a golden set of proportions, but a set of proportions appropriate for the individual as defined by the masses. I wouldn't think of it as "facial discrimination" so much as "deviation from ones potential".
