I wonder if Thom Yorke is laughing uncontrollably or weeping inconsolably at the fact that his band is being name-checked in songs that are being played 10 million times more than even "Creep" has already been. OK, you're right, he probably doesn't give a rat's ass.

I wonder if there has ever been a Katy Perry or Avril Lavigne fan who first heard of Radiohead from their songs and decided to check it out, and the were all like WTF is this?
- Victor Ganata
I wonder if there are any such fans who listened to Radiohead and thought to themselves, WTF have I been listening to all my life? and then proceeded to set their CDs on fire.

OK, they probably would've just selected all their mp3s and tossed them into the recycle bin.

I've clearly thought too much about this.

I need to unfollow that douche. And to think I used to think he had something to say ...

He's been a ghost since at least 2008, I think he actually has 2-3 people behind his Twitter account.

Ha, just went to Twitter and his was the first tweet in my stream. I unfollowed. It feels soooo good.
- Laura Norvig
He admitted a few years ago that he uses interns to tweet on his account. And I agree he's a douche.
- Trish R
All he cares about is his follower count. I used to think of him as someone who knew about agile business practices and social media. Now he just tweets about everything and anything.
- Laura Norvig
Thanks. Excellent answers. I never followed him, so I've been spared.

I also don't like that he tweets the same thing more than once in a day.

I followed him mostly because I thought he was handsome

He doesn't retweet what others post, and he doesn't seem to at reply very often, but at least he does sometimes.

I heard him talk as featured speaker at a Highwire Members Spring Meeting last year. Was very unimpressed. His whole (unprepared) talk was explaining/bragging about how he got a high follower count by... you guessed it, using interns and tweeting everything 3 times per day.

Not just a girl - Jaime Moore photography - So my amazing daughter, Emma, turned 5 last month, and I had been searching everywhere for new-creative inspiration for her 5yr pictures. I noticed quite a pattern of so many young girls dressing up as beautiful Disney Princesses..." - http://www.jaimemoorephotography.com/2013...
"...no matter where I looked 95% of the “ideas” were the “How to’s” of how to dress your little girl like a Disney Princess. Now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Disney Princesses, from their beautiful dresses, perfect hair, gorgeous voices and most with ideal love stories in the mix you can’t help but become entranced with the characters. But it got me thinking, they’re just characters, a writers tale of a princess (most before 1998)…an unrealistic fantasy for most girls (Yay Kate Middleton!). It started me thinking about all the REAL women for my daughter to know about and look up too, REAL women who without ever meeting Emma have changed her life for the better. My daughter wasn’t born into royalty, but she was born into a country where she can now vote, become a doctor, a pilot, an astronaut, or even President if she wants and that’s what REALLY matters. I wanted her to know the value of these amazing women who had gone against everything so she can now have everything. We chose 5 women...

Very cool and cute, bur are annual portraits a "thing" now?
- Soup in a TARDIS
My mother got annual portraits when she was a kid in the 40's. The photographer did a full page ad of her through the years, beginning from when she was a toddler.

I had annual portraits from when I was a kid. I know lots of people who do and I know people who don't. In this case the photographer is the kids mother, so she gets more than annual photographs.

Yeah, I'm definitely more scared being this close to 50 but that has a lot more to do with where I personally am in my life than the age of 50 itself. I'm sure other people do really well with it. (I'm permanently about 22 in my head...except slightly wiser and more world weary. You can be permanently 35 in your head!)

In all seriousness, there's a certain feeling of triumph that comes with getting a clean bill of health after a CPE. I had mine today too.

Pretty much. You start with one set of monsters and to be able to play with any other set of monsters you have to pay. The one set of monsters is fine, but even the computer plays with the other monster sets, and only being able to use the one set gets boring after a while. Also new maps cost. I don't mind paying in app, but their fee system is way high. Even buying the bundle that has everything in it is $8 which for an iphone game is too much in my opinion.
- Rachel Lea Fox
Jimminy, gak that is horrible! I just know that in a game I would want to play through game center with other friends, I wouldn't want all of us dependent on paying that much money. The $8 is for the pack with all the current items, they call it Season 1, so they intend to have more seasons which I assume will cost similar. Can't do it.

Have people already forgotten about the Lisa? The Apple III? The Newton? The Cube? Rhapsody? Copland? There's a reason why people were skeptical about the iPhone when it first came out.
i remember the NeXT cube. bloody expensive magnesium box. also remember the Lisa and the III. i'd forgotten the Newton til now.
- Hieronymous Thalidomide
The reason people were skeptical about the iPhone was because it was a non-phone maker launching a phone that only had limited success when similar phones (like the Siemens SX45) a few years previous didn't do so well... at least all the press I read pointed to that.
- Johnny
Plus, you have to take into account that after all those things they had huge successes with the iMac, iPod etc. so "did people forget" is probably tempered with "They had decent recent form"
- Johnny
I dunno, anecdotally, the idea that Apple sometimes comes out with total crap that no one wants to buy never really died. The idea that Apple always lays golden eggs is quite recent and seems to be already foundering.
- Victor Ganata
I think you have to at least count for time. I don't remember New Coke being mentioned once when Coke Zero was launched.
- Johnny
More recent although far less catastrophic: .Mac, MobileMe, Final Cut Pro X, Ping, Maps, iTunes 11.
- Victor Ganata
IIRC, people genuinely thought the iPhone was awesome for its web browser (most smartphones back then were doing WAP), its then-large screen, and it being a smarter iPod. We didn't even know then how apps were going to change everything. The skepticism was about (1) lack of 3G and (2) the $600 price tag. But Apple was doing the same thing Motorola did with the Razr, going from a high...

Being in possession of a Newton, the only way in which is was inferior to a Palm was its inability to connect with PC's. It had better storage, better handwriting recognition, and had the ability to use a modem far in advance of Palm. The device itself wasn't deficient, but people couldn't imagine how you'd use a device you didn't directly synchronize with your Windows PC. Things don't always fail because they're "bad" or because they're marketed poorly.
- Jennifer Dittrich
from which apple learned a valuable lesson. remember that the first Ipod required firewire to sync with your computer. But it didn't take long for the next hardware revision to support usb.
- DJF
from Android
Jennifer, side note: I remember I ended up buying a Palm over a Newton in part because of the price difference, performance (Newton felt sluggish to me), and form factor -- Newton was way too big. The PC connectivity issue wasn't a big deal for me. Also most of my coworkers had Palms. But I'm sure I'm not a typical consumer.
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
Form factor was definitely an issue, it just feels odd to me that so many people think of it as a terrible product overall -- I'll admit, I didn't have one when they first came out. I got one years later, and was amazed at how much better it performed than most of the Palms I had to help support at work.
- Jennifer Dittrich
To be fair, some of these "failures" were solely due to not selling well, not necessarily because they were broken products (although a few of these did start off broken then got fixed but it was too late, and some of these were entirely vaporware.)
- Victor Ganata
My OP was tangentially inspired by a Techcrunch post http://techcrunch.com/2013... (yeah, why am I reading Techcrunch) on Google Glasses trying to compare it to the iPhone, and, like the first commenter, I thought the Newton was a much better comparison: a novel high tech device with no significant practical use case.
- Victor Ganata
But I also thought the implicit underlying assumption—that just because a company is doing well doesn't mean it can never make mistakes—is preposterous.
- Victor Ganata
Just as hindsight demonstrates some sort of handheld computing device was inevitable (and is likely to displace desktops and notebooks as the dominant mainstream computing paradigm), some sort of direct optic visual interface is probably inevitable as well, but, just as people tend to forget Xerox PARC came up with the GUI and Apple came up with one of the first handhelds (the first one that was actually called a PDA, at least), I suspect people will forget Google came up with the eyeglass display.

I have been looking for a new keyboard. Saw this site a couple of days ago. Still trying to find a happy medium between gaming and typing with little to no clicking.
- Me
from YouFeed
Me, what size are you looking for? That is the first thing to consider: full size or ten-keyless? I find ten-keyless more ergonomic as you can have your mouse and keyboard closer together, but it's a personal choice. It's my first ten-keyless and I thought I would miss the number pad, but as it turns out, I'm ok without it. I learned to touchtype the numbers much faster now.
- Adrian
If you want no click, you want the red switches. They are the best for gaming as they are very smooth. I have a blue switch ten-keyless Cooler Master "Quickfire Rapid" and really dig it for typing as it's the clickiest, but not so much for gaming as the click is distracting. Thing is... I type more than I game. They have that keyboard in red switch as well. By all accounts it's the best...

- Adrian
Thanks Adrian. I'll take a look. As for the ten-keyless.. I would find it a bit weird. Using the Mac wireless keyboard at times for other machines proved to be weird. I would have to consider this some more.
- Me
Oh yeah, if you look at that first link I posted, Cooler Master now has a full-size Quick Fire XT (scroll down a bit). What makes these Quick Fire boards special is that they are rebranded Filco boards, which are high quality, but much pricier, enthusiast mechanical boards. Not only that, but the font used on the keys is the Babylon 5 font, if I remember correctly. :D Of course, the keys are fully removable and replaceable, as with all mechanical keyboards.
- Adrian
Using the mouse with the left hand has the ergonomic benefit of placing it as close to my full-size keyboard as to a compact keyboard.
- Jean-Marc Liotier
Proper keyboards click ! I sleep with my Unicomp...
- Jean-Marc Liotier
Jean, good point I'm actually ambidextrous with a mouse, but don't do it often. I always wondered why they don't put the number keypad on the left. That would also have the added advantage of being able to reach an enter key with your left pinky.
- Adrian
I still miss the old clacky keyboards. I've been tempted by http://www.daskeyboard.com/product... , especially the blank ones, but they're too big for me. I'm used to laptops. I don't want a number pad taking up space, and I don't want to have to move my hands to reach a separate pointing device. Does anyone make an 84-key keyboard with good mechanical switches, a pointing stick, and a trackpad?
- Seth
I went to Fry's and tried a blue cherry (black widow), brown cherry (logitech g710+), red cherry (cooler master). The blue cherry brought back memories of clicky keyboards and how much I love them. I had buckling spring back in the day. I had hoped brown cherry would be a nice compromise between typing (blue) and gaming (red) but it just didn't feel good to me. Blue was too clicky for my gaming needs; red didn't seem much better than what I have now. So I ended up getting nothing :(
- Amit Patel
Amit, I have done the same thing recently. I understand how people love the clicky, but when it bothers others in the same space, I can't justify it. Best thing so far seemed like a membrane keyboard. Felt nice as far as giving feedback, was quiet, but the cost was just too damn much and not practical.
- Me
I've tried the browns, blacks and reds, but settled on the blues. Just feels great to type on. I did not care for the browns or blacks, as both felt like a mushy compromise between blues and reds. I want to pick up a simple (read: non-cheesy gaming oriented) backlit ten-keyless red for gaming at some point. But the clutter!
- Adrian
If I get a blue cherry it will be for use at home, without other people around. This keyboard looks intriguing — http://www.techpowerup.com/forums... — it supports both usb and bluetooth, with up to 10 bluetooth pairings. They say they might make a ten-keyless variant at some point. And the blue variant is already sold out :(
- Amit Patel
Agreed that finding the places that have such keyboards to try out is not easy. Central Computers has a couple and they allowed me to open up a box to try the keyboards. They also have a 15 day return policy.

No, I mean this morning the number on the clock when she woke up was one more than last week. The sun comes up later, so she wakes up later. Awesome!

Eh? I get her up at 7 for school. Same last week as this week. So the clock says the same time. But her body thinks she's getting up an hour earlier. I just like "Summer time" better than "winter time". I'd prefer it dark in the morning and light in the evening, even in winter. :)
- Steve and 4 other people
But there's a surfeit of light in the summer, and a shortage in winter. Even when we fall back, the "extra" evening light quickly disappears in just 1-2 weeks. So it's a pointless exercise of screaming against the tide. Are heart attacks and traffic fatalities worth that? Definitely not. It's long past time to stop this ridiculous and archaic fiddling with clocks.

Longest day of the year: Jun 21. Sunrise 5:48 AM, Sunset 8:35 PM (14h 46m 52s). If we didn't "spring forward" sunrise would be at 4:48AM. That would be bad. Compare with the shortest day of the year: Dec 21 Sunrise: 7:22 AM, Sunset 4:55 PM. If we didn't "fall back" this would be one hour later than the stated times, which would be fine with me, although sunrise at 8:22am might be brutal for kids going to highschool (starts at ~8am). Personally, that would be OK with me and better than the status quo.

Pomodoro Technique: "The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. The technique uses a timer to break down periods of work into 25-minute intervals called 'Pomodori' (from the Italian word for 'tomatoes') separated by short breaks." [Wikipedia] - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
Article begins with Underlying principles: "There are five basic steps to implementing the technique: (1.) Decide on the task to be done. (2.) Set the pomodoro (timer) to 25 minutes. (3.) Work on the task until the timer rings; record with an x. (4.) Take a short break (3-5 minutes). (4.) Every four "pomodori" take a longer break (15–30 minutes). The stages of planning, tracking, recording, processing and visualizing are fundamental to the technique. In the planning phase tasks are prioritized by recording them in a 'To Do Today' list. This enables users to estimate the effort tasks require. As 'pomodori' are completed, they are recorded, adding to a sense of accomplishment and providing raw data for subsequent self-observation and improvement."
