i think this hasn't been bigger in the news because asians aren't a significant enough voting bloc. when's the last time you heard that a group of asians will affect voting outside of hawaii, little saigon and chinatown?

Going through all the jobs I've applied for/sent my resume in for so I'll have a list for my unemployment review meeting tomorrow. It's rather depressing =P
I remember the last time that I went thru this process.. I had about 400 odd sent resumes .. of which only about 30 got calls on
- Peter Dawson
:( I hear you, Tina, I'm doing the same thing. But when you land that dream job - boy howdy but we will celebrate here on FF!
- WorldofHiglet
Peter, mine's depressing for the opposite reason: there just aren't a lot of viable jobs in my area right now (at least not for my experience level and areas of expertise). Even though I'm looking at positions making 40% less than I was before, I've found less than 50 viable options over the past few months and that's including the two out of state jobs I've applied for... Le grrrr....
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I am with you, Tina. This kid is paddling like crazy. *Hugz*
- Mathew A. Koeneker
If it's any help, I read that for every position there's 5 applicants. I'm still looking as well and it's such an exhausting process. Take it one day at a time. ::bear hug::
- Jorge Escobar
The unemployment rate in my state was over 12% in October (November stats haven't been released yet), so I'm guessing it's more than 5 applicants for every job here...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Thanks all =) Today was a good day, I found two positions to apply for. One is managing training for a well known DDonut company. Wonder if I get free doughnuts... *drool*
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
My wife has been doing that shit for a year now. An underpaid part time job one day a week isn't cutting it. Seems to me that most of the online applications she fills are are a complete waste of time. Even when she gets interviews, too many are too damn rude to write or call back and say no.

Tough one, I liked both primary and high school (our whole year pretty much all got along), uni 1st time around was 4 years of drunken insanity with awesome people, and 2nd time around was shedloads of work with yet more really awesome people. I wouldn't change any of them given the choice.

High school. It was wild and you didn't need to think about anything :D

Note to Fellow Christians: Don't assume because someone says they're Christian that they represent represent "good" values. Many horrible deeds have been masterminded by self-professed Christians... deeds that line up better with the Satan camp than the Jesus camp. Just sayin'...
Just heard a radio quote from a Sarah Palin supporter. Her sum total rationale for supporting Palin? "Well, she's a Christian, so she has good values."
- Mark Jepsen
Good point Mark. I've long struggled with this issue. It's likely at the root of why I don't want to call myself a Christian anymore and why I'm having difficulty finding the right church environment.
- Junebug (aka Sarah Jill)
Mohandas Gandhi: "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."

...and lets 4get the Catholic scandel (sexual abuse) in Ireland. Just being a Christian is not enough..one needs to practice and have true human values.
- Peter Dawson
All religions have had their share of extremists and hypocrites. We've got far too many people attaching certain evil actions to specific religions. True human values really have no religious boundaries or affiliations.
- Allan Besselink
Let us remember that it was the disciples (students) of Christ that were first called Christians. If you are not disciplining yourself to follow Christ, then the label is completely useless. With that - I think we need (as Christians) to start being able to say that someone is NOT a Christian if the values do not match up with Jesus'. A person can CALL themselves a vegetarian, but if I see them wolfing down a Harris Ranch Filet Mignon, I can say that they are NOT, in fact, a vegetarian.
- Jeremy (cropmarks)
Yep, the problem is when you see intolerant, rude, disrespectful, and/or immoral people being seen as being Christian. Going to church doesn't make you a good person, any more than drinking diet soda makes you healthy.
- Alex Scoble
And no, I'm not equating diet soda with church...just saying that actions make you a good person, not your ideals/beliefs.
- Alex Scoble
I really believe a lot of this discussion is directly pursuant to the "Sola Gracia" teachings that were a backlash against the Catholic church from the Reformation theologians. Martin Luther couldn't understand the book of James because it spoke about the idea that one cannot claim faith when actions do not back up that claim. "What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has...

- Rene Wirtz
Alex, that sounds like a good thought, and on the outside of things it would seems so, but the truth is: none of us are good. Jesus did not come to make bad people good, He came to make dead people live. And when a person has that "life" on the inside of him or her, from that source come good works to others. Jesus gave us an interesting criteria about who were Christians: He said "If...

I'd agree that Christianity probably hasn't made most of its followers better people. BUT the handful of guys I've met who truly, deeply came to understand Christ's teachings and rebuild their lives around them (in prison) are some of the most remarkable people I ever hope to meet. I'm still an atheist, but damn. "True" Christians, if that's what they're called, are really amazing people. (however I haven't met many!)
- Lo is a Quitter
I agree, Lo...true Christians are amazing, because they practice what they preach. Unfortunately, there are a lot more that preach opposite to what they practice.

All but the most insanely fundamentalist of Christians today would not recognize (and would likely be appalled by) the Christianity of 400, or even 200 years ago. The more influenced a flavor of Christianity has been by Enlightenment values, the more benign it is.

Unfortunately the sign in front of a church in Cedar Rapids is gone now, but it said "God wants spiritual fruit, not religious nuts."

Mark, yes I agree with your original statement. And conversely, many kind and self-sacrificing acts by real Christians go unnoticed by those around them. This is not an age hallmarked by appreciation for the quiet and discreet. God Himself works everyday to provide good things for us and how often do we notice or praise Him for it? Yet he does. - Christopher A Carr
:) Not empty, Christopher. I have made an assertion and it is based on firm evidence that I see everyday. And it is based on knowledge from those whom I trust who have also seen that evidence before me.
- Melanie Reed
I think you may be confused as to what constitutes reliable "evidence."
- Christopher A Carr
I may be confused as to what constitutes the inverse of an Augmented Matrix, but I am not confused in the least about the reliable evidence of a loving God. :)

Brainless babies can't do anything but respirate for a short time, then die. What could possibly be the point?
- Christopher A Carr
The point is that you and I can't resurrect and heal them but God can.
- Melanie Reed
Christopher, this life isn't"the point" at all. Those unfortunate souls will be taken care of where there is no sickness and pain.
- Jeremy (cropmarks)
Why cause a brainless baby to be birthed in the first place?
- Christopher A Carr
Christopher, the universe is not a playground, is it where we do what we want and someone makes it better and we go on doing whatever we want?. Would that be controlled or would it be tyranny?
- Melanie Reed
An all-knowing deity knows everything, right? Including the fact that this "disobedience" would happen. So "he" is ultimately responsible for every single infant that is ever born without a brain above its face.
- Christopher A Carr
Anger is understandable. But God is not to blame. That is our responsibility. And responsibility has hard consequences that tear at the heart. It hurts God. That is why He has made a way out for us. And that way is open to you and anyone else who wants to accept it.
- Melanie Reed
You just avoided the issue by regurgitating religious platitudes.
- Christopher A Carr
Let's say you're an all-powerful, all-knowing deity, and you decide to create a universe. If you're genuinely omniscient, you'll know everything that will ever transpire in this universe -- including who you'll be "required" to torture forever, and who you won't. Any such being is ultimately responsible for everything that occurs in its universe.
- Christopher A Carr
Does your deity know if I'm going to be tortured forever? If not, he's not omniscient.
- Christopher A Carr
What is torturing you, Christopher and do you want to DM me?
- Melanie Reed
Your god sends people to be tortured forever in hell, yes?
- Christopher A Carr
No, Christopher, we decide by our choices in regard to heaven or hell. But I think you may mean hell in another sense?
- Melanie Reed
No, I mean hell in the Christian sense. Does your deity know ahead of time if I'll be going to hell or not?
- Christopher A Carr
In other words, when Yahweh created my soul, did he know what would happen to it?
- Christopher A Carr
Christopher, God has the ability to exercise foreknowledge but not the way you and I tend to think of it. His thinking is higher than ours and it allows for choice always as long as there is life! You have a choice.
- Melanie Reed
Did he know if my soul would end up in hell when he created it? Yes, or no?
- Christopher A Carr
I can not answer something that would put me in the position of judgment on you or anyone. That is not mine to decide. What God is saying is that your future is not cut off unless you make that choice. And God is giving you and me and everyone else the same opportunity to make that choice.
- Melanie Reed
I'm not asking you to judge anything. Is it your understanding that your deity knows everything?
- Christopher A Carr
God knows the beginning and the end of a matter.
- Melanie Reed
He didn't immediately know where Adam and Eve was, when they hid in the Garden from what I've read.
- Eivind
Then I am forced to conclude that Yahweh (were he to exist, a fact for which there is thankfully ZERO evidence) created the vast majority of souls for the purpose of having something to torture for an eternity.
- Christopher A Carr
No Christopher, he created humans out of love. He took the risk to allow everyone to make their own choice, knowing some would not make a wise choice and cause pain to themselves and to others would result.
- Melanie Reed
Ah, I see. He was just pretending he didn't know, like you do with small children.
- Eivind
Elvind, no, he wanted to give them the chance to own up and be honest.
- Melanie Reed
But Melanie, he knew when he made them who would and who would not make certain choices (so there's not really a choice). Why make a soul that's destined to be tortured forever?
- Christopher A Carr
How do you know these things, Melanie? They're not explained in the Bible.
- Eivind
Christopher, knowing what someone will do and causing them to do it are two different things. This is why God warns Cain in the beginning: "That thou mayest not sin" Choice. Always. Choice. There is always hope, Christopher, and the fact that you are asking gives me hope!
- Melanie Reed
I always wonder about the fate of otherwise good people who believe other things, or are never even exposed to the One system (whichever one that may be) that could save them.
- LogEx
Melanie, but if you know that someone will do a thing that leads them to eternal torture, why create them in the first place?
- Christopher A Carr
LogEx, God gives all of us an opportunity no matter where we are to make a choice,
- Melanie Reed
Well, LogEx, I have an answer for you that comes right out of the book that claims to be the Authority. http://www.biblegateway.com/passage... says that all people will be judged fairly and based on their own deeds.
- Jeremy (cropmarks)
Melanie, not in my copy. God asks Adam where he is. He answers, rats out Eve, and then God makes them clothes (and takes away the snake's limbs?). The next chapter is about Cain and Abel.
- Eivind
Christopher, maybe I wasn't very clear: the concept of choice means that you and I and everyone else have the ability to be influenced for good or for bad.
- Melanie Reed
I think Christopher is assuming God precludes free will.
- Jeremy (cropmarks)
Elvind, yes, God asks, not to find out what He already knows, but to give Adam and Eve a chance to confess what they have done which is what you would do for someone you loved and respected.
- Melanie Reed
Yahweh: I'm going to make souls x, y, and z -- souls x and y will need to be tortured forever; I know this because I know how they will behave, because I know everything. But I'm going to create them anyway. In fact, the vast, vast majority of all the souls I create will "chose" to be burned in hell forever, but I'm OK with that, and will create them anyway. ...nice deity you got there.
- Christopher A Carr
Melanie, that's just projecting onto God what you would have done. It doesn't say anywhere that's why he did it?
- Eivind
Elvind, I don't think I would have handled it so well as God. ;) His response is in keeping with His character and nature. And the rest of scripture provides testimony .
- Melanie Reed
I guess that depends. Is there an absolute value for "right?" I'm going to say there is. I believe that Charles Manson was wrong for what he did. There's no gray area there. Now that I've established that there is an absolute value for "right," then it behooves me to investigate why.
- Jeremy (cropmarks)
Eivind, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to miss-spell your name.
- Melanie Reed
Hehe, almost every English speaker who sees it in writing makes that mistake :)
- Eivind
Lewis (C.S.) decided that he felt that "right" and "wrong" were hard-wired and not up to the whims of the individual. In doing that, he felt he had to investigate the ... Author, if you will of those immutable laws (along with gravity, et al). He then looked at the myriad of religious texts that claimed to be "the way" and finally settled on the bible. Christianity was just the end of his search for the reason for "right."
- Jeremy (cropmarks)
Nothing supernatural in the way of an "Author" is required to account for our preferences for some social behaviors over others. Foundationaly, we are a species of highly social primate. On top of that, moral and ethical mores evolve (in a memetic, cultural evolutionary sense) over time. ...Our species has been on this planet for 200,000 or so years. It seems rather odd to me that Yahweh only took an interest many thousands of years after the relatively recent emergence of agriculture.
- Christopher A Carr
Melanie has DMed me. Evidently she is "troubled" for me, and wants to know if I need her help. Arrogant? Sanctimonious? I don't even know what to call that. Amazing.
- Christopher A Carr
I assume practical tasks are out of the question?
- Eivind
Practical tasks? My house's gutters need replacing.
- Christopher A Carr
I'm afraid she would only offer to pray that they be miraculously fixed.
- Christopher A Carr
Why does that make you afraid? You're certainly brave enough to call out someone's private messages in a public forum; surely having someone pray for you wouldn't be that bad.
- Glen Mistletoe
Pretty sure Christopher didn't mean that kind of "afraid."

"Pity the poor single people who pass their 40th birthday without ever tying the knot, since research has shown that never-married adults have more health woes than married folks. And, um, isn't there something wrong with those who go it alone anyway? Not so fast. A new study looking at psychological measures shows that never-married people aged 40 and up can be just as resourceful, psychologically speaking, as their married counterparts. Wait, there's more. "If you look at never marrieds who are high on mastery -- they feel like they are in the driver's seat and in control of their lives -- and high on self-sufficiency -- they know how to take care of themselves -- they actually have better emotional well-being than married people," said study author Jamila Bookwala, an associate professor of psychology at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. Her report is published in the Nov. 30 issue of the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships."

The interesting part for me, which was much clearer from the abstract than the news article, was that self-sufficiency was a positive thing for unmarrieds but a negative thing for marrieds. Used to be a cat person only and hated dogs. But after I got my Schnauzer I became a dog fan too.
- Jason Huebel

I was pretty much a dog person most of my life and we also had birds (cockatiels, parakeets and my grandpa had canaries). Now I have two cats and am a crazy cat lady! Still, if I ever get to move somewhere where I can have a dog again, I'll be off to the shelter in a New York Minute!

Are folks more into the pure bloods or rescue animals?
- Mathew A. Koeneker
That´s not mutually exclusive:) Anyway, I have a pure bred (with the intent of hunting), but would definitely consider a mixed rescue dog the next time.
- Thomas Bøhm
Good point, Thomas. The thought had occurred to me right after I hit enter. D'oh. ;-)
- Mathew A. Koeneker
most of my parakeets are from peeps that don't want them anymore or they move etc

Dogs, cats, ferrets, snakes, hamsters ... strangely enough, never had a bunneh.
- Steven Perez
Although I have had many mutts (I use that as a term of endearment) over the years, I have to say that I love my pure-bred Schnauzer (the first pure-breed I've had). Pure-breeds have a little more predictable temperaments, which was important to us with three rambunctious boys in the house. We bought him from an individual about 10 miles from us who does limited breeding (one litter a...

Someone said that to me yesterday and I said I completely agree. To take a quote out of Star Trek - People seem to be constantly "looking for things".. this person is going on a holiday to Rio for 3 months...Let's say I am also slightly jealous

life is whats happening while you are busy makings plans for life !!
- Peter Dawson
Well that sounds even more depressing...
- Bindu Reddy
Sorry but I belive that was a John Lennon Quote :)-
- Peter Dawson
Actually it's fun when you have a goal in mind, that you believe in, with some clarity of the next step on how to get there. If then one goes with "just do it" approach, and with full involvement, such that things start to flow automatically (i.e with not much controlled mental thinking), then it's fun. If you aren't in the moment completely and thinking of many other things, then it's painful.
- Vipul Rawat
My favorite quote: "A motorboat's always going somewhere. The sailboat's already there."
- Piaw Na
Piaw Na: great quote. I'm gonna use that and give you credit. Watch for the royalty checks to start pouring in!
- Morgan Haley
Bindu: A ship is always referred to as 'she' because it costs so much to keep one in paint and powder, because there's always a great deal of bustle around her… because there's usually a gang of men around… because she has a waist and stays… because it's not the initial expense that breaks you, it's the upkeep… because she is all decked out… because takes a good man to handle her right… because she shows her topsides, hides her bottom and, when coming into port, always heads for the buoys.
- Piaw Na
Are you implying that women are high maintainence !!? :)
- Bindu Reddy
No time to read this thread, I have to get somewhere! ;)
- Brian Chang
It's also more fun if your job doesn't force you to go absolutely nowhere day after grinding day...
- Kamilah Gill
Piaw : love the explanation. - plan on sharing it as my company is a SHE too. Thanks
- Tracy Benham
Bindu: I wrote that because of your statement about wanting to be a Sailboat. :-) As a sailor, I'm fond of saying, "To simulate owning a sailboat in the Bay Area, stand in a shower, set it to maximum cold and turn it on full blast, and then start stuffing $100 bills down the drain." (And yes, I'm a sailboat renter, never an owner.)
- Piaw Na
Ah I see! I guess I shouldn't want to be a high-maintenance sailboat...
- Bindu Reddy
Well, you could be a high-maintenance sailboat for rental, whatever that means...
- Jim Norris
Ya Jim Norris. Whatever that means sounds about right. ;)

Plus, we don't use "tits" on the main page (as much). Boob, boobies or chesticles will work

I think I am in love. You are my new cyber FF crush....don't tell any of the other FF ladies....wait, they can read this can't they? oh damn....
- Morgan Haley
You look great! Without going down the 'nice tits' path, since I'm a classy guy that wouldn't say something like 'you have nice tits' over the internet. even if you did have 'nice tits', it would be inappropriate for me to comment in such a manner. so...um....I like the hair...

Derrick, what do you find appalling? the photo itself or the hair?
- Marissa
I think you, the photos, and the hair are all fine, Marissa. I'm appalled at how men, grown ass men are talking to you. You're better than that. And I thought they were better than that.
- Derrick
Ohhhhhhh lol, okay. yeah the way they talk doesnt really offend me... i take it with a grain of salt. haha i was about to be really offended by you though. but thanks =] I know i'm better than the ones who aren't kidding. which is why it doesnt really bother me.... none of the things said are too terrible though

The fact that you weren't offended is one thing, Marissa. *I* was offended. No one should be talked to like that. No one.

'On average, couples that live in [zip code] spend between $34,575 and $57,624 for their wedding. This does not include cost for a honeymoon or engagement ring.' The first time I looked at this site I almost died.
- joey
Flat nothing where I live - I can't get legally married.
- Sparky
How do they get their data, though? I never told anyone what my wedding cost.
- Stephen Mack
My zip code says between $25,854 and $43,091. I'm not buying that at all.
- Rochelle
In my zip code is says $40,235 and $67,058 DAMN
- Shevonne
$19,735 and $32,892 in a little town outside of Austin. Wow...that is insanity.
- aden
Stephen, just a random guess, but I would assume that they would survey the vendors out there in a certain area and then add it up? The average cost of a caterer in my zip code plus the average cost of a florist plus the average cost of a venue, etc.
- Rochelle
ours was JOP and home-made food. i think we spent less than $600 on the honeymoon.
- Joe Silence is not dead
Louisville, KY 40220 spend between $13,922 and $23,203 for their wedding. - Never known anyone who spent that much.
- Tsali, The Native of FF
Whoa! I was married at my mom's house in Palo Alto. The range there is $66,090 and $110,149!!! We didn't spend that much, and I still thought our wedding was costly!!
- Georgia Diehl
I don't suppose they subtract the value of the cash and gifts given
- LogEx
we were broke when we moved to the US from NZ and weren't about to go into debt for our wedding. my parents paid for our honeymoon trip as a gift.
- Joe Silence is not dead
I definitely see destination wedding if I ever get married
- Shevonne
Our wedding is a little on the high end...about $20k to $21k for my area. Range is $13,769 and $22,948
- Alex Scoble
the wedding? about 6 grand. since the breakup? $1,550 a month. for 8 long years.
- Morgan Haley
Joey, it just seems like too much. When I was doing my planning and all that, I don't think it would have been that much even if we had paid full price for everything. I guess it really depends on what kind of wedding you have and where you have it. Cake/punch in your church hall is going to obviously be less than plated dinner at a hotel downtown.
- Rochelle
that sucks.. its does not take canadian zipcodes
- Peter Dawson
Morgan, how many children do you have?
- Georgia Diehl
Wow! I had no idea child support was that much! Although, I guess I'm just assuming that's what you were referring to!
- Georgia Diehl
Child support? Try 'spousal support' aka alimony. But divorce is expensive because it's worth it.
- Morgan Haley
The site's figures are based on survey results from people who've paid for weddings and not based on polling of vendors according to the site.
- Alex Scoble
the 3 'rings' of relationshits: engagement ring. wedding ring. suffering.
- Morgan Haley
$14,993 and $24,988. Thank you Rochester :)

My mom wanted us to have a larger wedding (200 guests), so i told her fine, as long as she was willing to pay for it. She did...
- Georgia Diehl
That's all crazy talk - we spent about $3k-5k on our wedding. $10k+ for a one-time event is ridiculous!
- Jesse Stay
That's more reasonable Jesse. But there is no accounting for taste. :) my parents got married and had the reception in the back yard.

Reasonable-shmeasonable...my catering bill alone, including alcohol is like $7500 and frankly, that's reasonable.
- Alex Scoble
Roberto, nothing wrong with that - it's where we had ours. It was still decorated beautifully, people still had fun, and we still got married. We made a lot of our food, and ordered Sams club for the rest - nicely decorated most people don't even notice the difference.
- Jesse Stay
It's like I've said before, once you get in to the traditional wedding industry, there is no cheap.

- Alex Scoble
There was someone here on FF (I don't remember who, but it was a guy?) who said his wedding budget was $100k and his honeymoon budget was $50k and thought that was totally reasonable and realistic. I was O_O
- Rochelle
People make lots of money off weddings and funerals. Sometimes it's really sad. In Las Vegas, I contributed $40 for a car wash, when I heard that the reason they were washing cars was to cover the funeral costs for a friend. Elopement maybe?
- Mitchell Tsai
It says $11-18K where I live. I think my wife and I spent around $8K.
- Jason Huebel
Mine cost $16 at the county building. It was still fun.
- Jeremy (cropmarks)
I think people *greatly* underestimate the cost of their wedding because they mostly look at recent bills after the event, but so many expenses, like deposits/stationery happen so far in advance. People also tend to not bundle-in related costs, like gifts for the wedding party, etc. If you think about it, if you host your reception at a hall w/ a catered dinner (which is what most people do), the food/beverage costs alone are like $100/person, so it's pretty easy to imagine how the average gets up to +$20k.
- Ana
@Mitchell Be wary of funeral car washes. Frequently those are scams.
- EricaJoy
My brother and his gf have ditched their idea to marry in the UK, instead of £10-13k they can spend £2-3k in Greece and get *everything* paid for. It's no contest, so we all off to Greece in a couple of years. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
If you have to send 11 gift cards to 11 different people, do you say the same thing on each one or write something different? And no, I'm not interested to hear your rants on why gift cards suck. We've already had that thread.
For 11 cards, different. For 20+, the same. For 50+, buy a rubber stamper with the message and don't care if they see "stamp lines".
- April Russo (app103)
If it's 11 and you have time and the soul to, different. Otherwise, go to Hallmark aisle and pick 11 from a stack that all look the same
- Fulaan, inna Hebel
...I like to think that I treat everyone the same, so you're all getting the same canned message on your gift cards: "Happy Chanukwanzamas to you! Don't spend this $5 gift card all at the same place!"
- .LAG liked that
If the 11 people don't know each other, I would be more likely to write the same thing.
- John E. Bredehoft
I send out 40 - 50 cards each Christmas. I do the same happy holidays/happy new year line and then I write a personal message. the first 20 or so cards are quite original. the last 20? the personal message shrinks down to about a line. :D
- pea
Remember this is about GIFT cards and not GREETING cards.
- April Russo (app103)
I SUCK at writing cards, period. ( don't tell anyone that tho)
- Roberto Bonini
John ...oh, that's a good point. it would stink if a few people who knew each other started comparing notes and found out they both got the same card and message from you. There's a "Curb Your Enthusiasm" episode waiting to be written about that scenario
