Altruism can be explained by natural selection : Nature News
"Altruistic behaviour, such as sterile worker ants caring for the offspring of their queen, evolves only between related individuals through what is known as kin selection — or so many evolutionary biologists have thought since the 1960s. They argue that the standard theory of natural selection cannot explain the evolution of eusocial groups of organisms such as bees and ants, because the sterile workers in those groups do not themselves reproduce. A two-part mathematical analysis1, published in Nature this week, overturns this tenet by showing that it is possible for eusocial behaviour to evolve through standard natural-selection processes." - Eivind from Bookmarklet
Maybe you would have liked my Animal Behavior class, Eivind? One week was dedicated to altruism and how there's really no such thing in nature. There always seems to be some sort of benefit to the giver. [I always wanted to think there was genuine altruism, though. I look forward to reading that article.] - Jenny
I've been accused of animal behavior, so maybe I would've liked it, Jenny :) - Eivind
If I Hadn't Found Jesus, I'd Feel Pretty Shitty About My Crimes -
If I Hadn't Found Jesus, I'd Feel Pretty Shitty About My Crimes
"The first few months behind bars were the worst of my life. Every night I'd stare into the darkness, waiting for the nightmares, waiting to hear those horrible screams all over again. Even here behind these thick penitentiary walls, there was no hiding from what I'd done to that poor family. Then, one night, it happened: I lay alone in my cell, my only companion the visions of wickedness that filled my head. Suddenly, there was a light, and somehow the light spoke to me. It was the voice of Jesus Christ. He told me he had died for the sins of mankind and all could find peace through his salvation. Was I ready to repent? Uh, let me think about that for a sec. Yup! It was a stroke of unbelievable luck. Here I thought I'd spend the rest of my life agonizing over that night I broke into a random house and methodically tortured all five of its residents, but Jesus was like, "Nah, you're good." He took all those years I expected to wallow in suffocating guilt for having forced a mother to... more... - Eivind from Bookmarklet

Jeremy, you forget we are atheists not people who are turning away from a god. If you don't think a benevolent invisible man lives in the sky, you can't wish he would forgive you for doing things that he arbitrarily decides are improper. - Heather
But I *can* square my actions with my creator. It goes like this: "Hi Mum, sorry I couldn't come over for dinner last week. Is this Thursday ok?" There, squared. (Hey, you said to make light if I want...) - Mark
Nice rationalization for your complete submission Jeremy. You might regret that choice though, when He touches you with His Great Noodly Appendage. Who'll have egg on their face then?, so to speak. - Edward Zwart

"Dear Darryl, I have received your permission slip featuring what I can only assume is a levitating rabbit about to drop an egg on Jesus. Thank you for pre-ticking the permission box as this has saved me not only from having to make a choice, but also from having to make my own forty five degree downward stroke followed by a twenty percent longer forty five degree upward stroke. Without your guidance, I may have drawn a picture of a cactus wearing a hat by mistake. As I trust my offspring's ability to separate fact from fantasy, I am happy for him to participate in your indoctrination process on the proviso that all references to 'Jesus' are replaced with the term 'Purportedly Magic Jew.' Does insecurity promote faith? « Why Evolution Is True
"Most wealthy countries in the world, including Japan and much of Western Europe, are not particularly religious, with fewer than 25% of their citizens professing belief in God. The United States is a notable exception. Although it has high per capita income, it also has high religiosity — around 60% of us believe in God. Sociologists have produced a lot of theories about why America is an outlier in this respect, but several recent studies are converging on an answer: insecurity." - Eivind from Bookmarklet

Well I live in a country where if I am unemployed I ask unemployment benefit and also get my rent paid, if I'm ill I get free healthcare. There is still insecurity, relative poverty and income inequality but I would definitely feel more insecure if I lived in the US for instance, I don't know whether that would make me turn to religion but I can see a correlation. People need to know they have some form of safety net. - M F
