Is this the thing that was announced at Demo?
- Kevin Pedraja
Okay, that's seriously cool, and considering my last week of not sleeping as well as usual I'd seriously consider it. $399 though. Hmm.
- Kevin Fox
Has anyone tried it? I've been curious about my sleeping patterns -- it may be an interesting toy (assuming the headband doesn't disrupt my sleep). If I get one, you can borrow it Kevin :)
- Paul Buchheit
This seems like the sort of thing one would want to rent, not buy.
- DGentry
I also want a Fitbit, but it has been "coming soon" for a long time. Also, this looks like it will provide much better sleep data because it monitors brain waves or something -- I think the fitbit just monitors movement.
- Paul Buchheit
@Paul - true. the sleep feature with fitbit is just for movement. This looks much more geared to the sleep side of things. I'm really excited for all of this body monitoring tools that are going to be coming out. I think the iPhone is going to be a huge driver of this.
- Mike Bracco
What I am really interested to see is how the body monitoring and tracking tools will tie into social networks. That will be real interesting I think. The obvious one that already exists is for runners using the Nike+ or other like devices. However, more will come I think.
- Mike Bracco
interesting. $399 sounds like a lot until you compare it with $1,500 for one night of a polysomnograph in a lab. :-D granted the PSG is more helpful diagonsing apnea or restless leg syndrome, but physicians could loan these out to patients fairly cheaply. too bad they had to add the disclaimer of "Zeo Personal Sleep Coach is neither a medical device nor a medical program and is not intended for the diagnosis or treatment of sleep disorders" -- no doubt to get around FDA approval requirements.
- Karim
Maybe someone in this thread can answer as it's somewhat related: I heard that professional football teams give athletes a pill that they swallow and it submits data back to a device during their practice. I heard that teams started using it to monitor dehydration among other things (after a couple of players had died). Anyone know the company that makes this or has any info about it.
- Mike Bracco
Does anyone know how this works? These sorts of things are usually a combination of EEG and EMG.
- Gabe
I just did a sleep study to get this data at the cost of ~$1500. Turns out I have severe sleep apnea and was awakening about 53 times per hour. I'm on a CPAP machine now and feel much better in the morning. This would be an easy way to find out if you have a problem that needs treatment. You'll probably still have to go through a sleep study to get the machine prescribed. Paul, if you...

I bet this is going to be particularly popular given the link between sleep and obesity, see e.g. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id... I wonder if companies might start requiring the use of something like this by pilots, truck drivers, or (!) medical residents.

It's hard to swallow no Wifi on the Storm, but the iPhone doesn't even do video [natively] and has a lower screen resolution and crappier camera.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
have you tried the storm? the push button screen is annoying
- Richard Lawler
You should think about the Curve if going the Blackberry route.
- Shevonne
Have you looked at the HTC Touch Pro? Although you are likely on Rogers so maybe they don't have it. WiFi, video, 3.2 MP camera, nice interface, active sync for GMail, Google Maps with GPS. I like mine a lot.
- Kenton
Storm is nice in theory, but not in implementation. If you're gonna go BB, look at the Bold. Also, the iPhone has MAD apps. Something to think about. I like my Apple stuff, but I'm no fanboy. And I love mine.
- Derrick
@Shevonne There's been a lot of iPhone fan-people who have been spreading a lot of crap about the Storm. I've played with it alot and it's downright sexy. @Richard I love the clickscreen, it's a great idea.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
If I were you I would also consider the BB Bold.
- Michelle Martinez
I have heard negative stuff about the Storm. And seeing the commercial where they type on the screen and every letter clicks makes me think I would go insane using it. Between the two I'd pick the iPhone. But I will also say that I love my Android G1! :)
- Her Lindsay-ness
I just recently switched from a BlackBerry to the iPhone. Both have their advantages/disadvantages. Both data plans are $30/mo. (at least, mine was on VZW) and, for me, the iPhone makes that $30 much more worth it. Way better browsing experience and a lot more apps.
- Shawn Farner

@Shevonne, I think everyone has pretty much agreed that the MSFT phone rumors were about software/services for Windows Mobile and not a MSFT-branded phone

I'm not a BB guy (i'm on my 2nd iPhone) but if you want to do more than email from the phone - go with the iPhone. Internet access is unparalleled - Safari alone would be enough of a win, but couple that with socnet specific apps and it's a hands down winner. If you were considering a storm, you're ok with the soft keyboard and unless you really, really need it to do video (which you may be able to do if you jailbreak?) the iPhone's gotta be the way. :)
- felix
I'm BB all the way, but when it comes to qwerty as to the Storm: dunno

Shey go for the storm. People just steal iPhones on Bart (true story)
- @CrystalinaB
Buy the iPhone—no doubt. There are some interesting things about Android and the Palm Pre. However, neither of them has the goods to catch Apple in features or variety of 3rd-party apps. Apple is just on version 2.2.1; version 3.0 of the software (and likely the hardware) will be out around June-ish, which should result in another jump in features and capabilities. Like with the iPod, Apple has a lead they will not lose.
- Albert Willis
iPhone vs. the Storm. Most of the hardware is comparable, but Apple has the advantage with software, with the AppStore, etc. Video capture on non-jailbroken phones is coming. And no wi-fi on the Storm is a deal breaker. I mean, that's just nuts. Mobile Safari was great when it was released and continues to get better and better. I do an amazing amount of surfing on the iPhone—it matters.
- Albert Willis

Yep - no SMS forwarding. And no sending contact vcards ( or otheer contact format). The iPhone will read a vcard but wont send. Much to my distinct distste. But i can live with it.

- Mohamed J
i bought a HTC Touch HD, and as much as it is windows mobile 6.1 based, so far i like it a lot! it is not necessarily as easy in autorotating as iPhone - remedy is called GSen - but it is arguably better and has better charactereistics than iPhone. so perhaps consider it as well.

Wondering how Gmail offline works? Here, we walk you through it. In short, people familiar with Gmail already are mostly familiar with its offline incarnation, which Google said it's releasing gradually to its users in coming days. The biggest difference is of course that you can't see new messages, and e-mails that you send are merely queued up until they can be delivered when a network connection is re-established. Gmail uses Google's Gears technology, which among other things lets browsers store data on a computer in what's called a local cache. I'm using Firefox 3.1 beta 2, with which Gears isn't compatible, so to access Gmail offline I used Google Chrome instead, which has Gears built in. Since Gears is a relative rarity, though, most folks will have to install it first, which Google walks you through.

I went home and Google'd him and learned he co-discovered the Ebola virus. Some people, when you meet them, you just know they are smart. They exude smartness. They make you feel humble without even saying a single word. I felt that around Peter Piot, I shot his badge, not to remember his face but so I would remember his name to do some research on later. I was blown away. This is the problem with Davos. You get thrust into a room with 50 interesting people and you have no idea what makes them interesting. I wish I had known more about Peter before I had met him, but there is something interesting about the serendipity of meeting someone new. Some of the most interesting people I've met have been people I've met out of the blue. How about you?

Interestingly enough I have dozens of experiences like this every week, without going to Davos. Especially in airplanes, because there you're forced to sit next to someone. I still remember the day I was sitting next to the CEO of REI. I've met interesting school teachers and plumbers and IT managers and tons of other people that way. Another day I met Larry Tesler, former Apple exec. Have you ever met someone who surprised you?
- Robert Scoble
It's one of my driving wishes, being able to work with and interact with smart people. And I will agree with you that the most interesting people you meet by chance - but perhaps in part it is because we would be less intrigued by the people we set out to meet, having been more prepared for them? I envy you your chance to meet and talk with people like this in Davos, make the most of it else we'll all pounce on you ;)
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Joelle: I try, but the problem is that at Davos (and all conferences, really) you meet people like Peter and you know they did something interesting with their lives but you have no idea what it is. Because you only get fleeting moments with people at conferences by the time you figure it out they usually are gone. Now the hard work begins where we try to get a second chance and an interview! :-)
- Robert Scoble
Incidentally that is perhaps one of the reasons I dont have an mp3 player and have the (very swiss/german) tendency to not sit alone at meals even when I am alone - to not isolate myself from meeting people. People are just about the most fascinating thing on earth! Even on the train / tube / plane or while waiting for something. I have learned about everything from preserving the pink...

- Sean
By the way, I uploaded dozens of photos from Davos of people. All of whom can be found on Google. That too is something very cool that has developed in the past few years: the fact that we can learn a ton about nearly everyone. I didn't find a single person I couldn't find something about on Google.
- Robert Scoble
What if you were initially impressed with someone you met in person but couldn't find anything about them via Google?
- Mattb4rd
How far away are we from an app that will take the photo input (picture of someone's name badge) and automatically (within a minute) return information on them - bio, sites, etc
- Wayne Schulz
Mattb4rd: then I would start wondering. I would probably pull up their business card and call them and say "why can't I find anything about you on Google?" That probably would lead to an interesting conversation.
- Robert Scoble
Wayne: not far at all. Evernote already does some of that. Conference presenters could include info in a QR code on the badge that could be used with a cell phone.
