Please stop using ISP email (Gmail is free!). I just discovered that one relatively common ISP seems to be blocking some of our emails because they include the url http://groups.google.com/group... (with that removed, the message gets delivered).

Spam filtering is too complex to be left up to random perl scripts or whatever these people use. Several months back, a different ISP was blocking our email because the from address included the word "friend" (as in "friendfeed.com").

i've noted a similar trend as well. most people on isp email (ahem, comcast & earthlink) have a setting that kickbacks anything that isn't coming from an approved list...and the default msg manages to come off as both retarded and pretentious in a "i need to stock shelves of canned food in preparation for y2k" kind of way. i think earthlink's notice even suggests you to CALL the person you're trying to contact so they can add you to their approved list. very annoying.

Sadly, for most people, using email that isn't provided by their ISP is like using a phone that wasn't provided by the phone company before Carterphone. You're playing with dangerous wiring, and 'who do you call if the bell doesn't ring?'.

Big deal, Gmail is currently blocking yahoo-inc.com addresses. It is a hard problem and no one does it perfectly.

Sam, it's very unlikely that they are blocking all of yahoo-inc.com. Perhaps you did a "Report Spam" on that address previously? (which could cause blocking for your account) Regardless, the fact that nobody is perfect does not excuse those that are awful.

Maybe it wasn't obvious, but just because an ISP is blocking some email messages with that URL in them it doesn't imply that the spam filter that it has is awful. It probably has just gotten a lot of spam with google groups urls in them.

it is interesting how many people stick with their ISP email service. I guess it is hard to change your email identity especially if you have used the one you already have for long.

I was just going to post a question about best practices re: startups sending email. I am sending email directly from a server with SPF, domainkeys and DKIM all setup correctly. Yahoo still seems to want to put our emails into spam folders for some users. Any pointers on what to avoid (the emails I am sending are very short and contain only some text, a link and a unsubscribe link)/how to debug?

As far as I can tell, there aren't any great options. Some startups that don't have to send much mail just route it through Google. I think there are also some equivalent paid services, but I don't know how good any of them are. As you recall, even Gmail had trouble getting past broken spam filters sometimes.

I haven't used ISP mail for the best part of ten years. I've changed ISP three times in that time, so it would have been a pain in the ass and expense to keep telling everyone and reprinting cards etc. It's worth paying for a domain for that reason alone, or, nowadays using reliable spam-free email like Gmail. (I gave up on Hotmail and Yahoo way back).

Even people in my own relatively tech-savvy family still use @aol and @earthlink addresses. It's not that they don't want to use Gmail or similar upgrade, its that they don't want to give up an address that they've had for 10, 15, 20 years. Weird when compared to a few generations later (kids today), when email addresses are treated as disposable identities. However, comcast and earthlink should just outsource email to someone more ... modern.

I find it strange that people use ISP e-mail because they want to keep their e-mail address. My parents have changed their e-mail address at least once when they changed providers. Also, their ISP only offers POP3 access. No IMAP. Of course, of the free e-mail out there, only gmail offers IMAP (that I know of).

The only reason I haven't completely chucked my AOL mail is because I want to keep those screen names for IMing since I've had them for forever and a day. Unfortunately some family members only know me by those e-mail addys, so it's been a slow uphill battle to get them to start switching to either my hotmail or gmail accounts. Oh I don't use the AOL app for anything anymore. I'm all web-based anyway, and I use Digsby for chat. But the problem is that if I cancel my AOL account, they will cancel my screen names. Which means I will have to get all new screen names because they don't release canceled names back into the wild for like six months.

Not sure what you are saying -- that everybody should only use Gmail? There is a whole range of email providers out there -- free, not free, self managed, outsourced with varying degrees of spam management. Gmail is better than most, but still screws up.

Back when we got our service from Verizon, they not only included a Verizon email address, but also bundled in MSN, including an msn.com (hotmail) account. I haven't checked the former address in years, but use the latter for my IRL personal communications.

I son't see any problem with a FFer promoting a given web service in their posts. Happens all the time in fact. Gmail is free and ISP email usually sucks. If you don't like gmail there are other options and you're free to post about them. And if Paul's talking about the same ISP that I have, they pull this kind of crap all the time.

Laura, I actually just replaced the groups link with a link to the friendfeed-feedback room. My point however is that I should not have to worry about a groups.google.com url or some other random detail causing email to get blocked by some dumb filter. I noticed another ISP that blocks our daily-summary emails whenever they include amazon.com links (from someone's wishlist). FriendFeed is full of links, so these naive filters will always cause problems for our users.

V, I would bet that Gmail protects your privacy better than your ISP does. That said, I agree that there should be multiple competent email providers. I wish that Gmail would open up their sender reputation data, since that's the most powerful and reliable bit in the spam filtering equation. However, even if they do that, most ISPs will still suck because they don't know better, don't care, and their customers don't realize what's going on.

Are there really ISPs who don't give end users control over whether to use the ISPs spam filters or not? I have ATT, which uses Yahoo Mail, and I can choose whether to use Yahoo filters or get the raw feed (and I do both, on different accounts). I do wish Gmail would let me POP/IMAP my spam folder, if I so chose, some of my Gmail accounts are obscure enough to never get spam and I don't want to miss anything.

"I would bet that Gmail protects your privacy better than your ISP does". Having worked at an ISP all I have to say is "here here!". People think Gmail is evil because they "read" your email to put some ads on it but don't care if your ISP sends your email through something like an IronPort to detect spam.

Every time Verizon/Yahoo gets a twich, my Mozilla Thunderbird goes down and cannot access the servers. But my Gmail still works. So I would like to go with GMail, completely, but, would I still be using the Verizon/Yahoo servers? Is GMail available through its own servers? Not completely savvy about this. Chris

"Berkeley is moving full-steam ahead with plans for a new ferry terminal, despite howls from windsurfers and environmentalists that the ferries will bring the marina more harm than good. The City Council recently approved preliminary plans for a $57 million terminal at the waterfront, just south of the Berkeley Pier. Two ferries, which will run primarily during commute hours, are expected to bring 1,700 people a day to San Francisco via a 30-minute trek across the bay. "Long-term, this will be one of the spines of our transportation system," said City Councilman Laurie Capitelli, who put forth the measure. "When, not if, the Hayward Fault lets loose, this will be an ideal way to get people around the bay." Good question. I haven't seen the details of the thing and I'm certain, given politics, that it could be done better than it's being done. But I'm still stunned by how many people are down on it. I agree with the sailors/windsurfers that it's not fair of CoB to charge the sailors to rent property at the Marina (even raising rent) but only charge $1 yr rent to the ferry co. But I absolutely think we need a ferry terminal in Berkeley. I hope they don't blow it.

As of Saturday my parent's home was still there when my dad left. He stayed on the roof with a hose fighting it by himself. The firefighters helped him fight it for a while. They used a pump to pump water from the swimming pool to fight it but eventually the firefighters gave up. The neighbors house burned down. My dad was able to save our house, at least as of Sat. afternoon. It may be gone now. He was going to try and hike back in on Saturday night in order to bypass the roadblock by the Sherriff, but wasn't able to get back in there.

I think the house may be ok. Well see. On Sat. night when I talked to my mom she said that he'd been able to save the house fighting the fire from the roof. But a storage/garage type structure on the property burned down and 3 cars were lost as of Sat afternoon. The whole thing could be gone now though.

yeah. this is the worst fire since the fire that burned through there maybe in 1977 or so? I remember that one too. It was pretty bad. This one seems worse though. The other thing that's terrible are the floods that follow the fires the next winter.

I talked with my dad on the phone for the first time today. He seemed fine about it all. He said it was exciting actually. He was the only one there fighting the fire for a long time. He said it was really quiet except for sounds of the fire. He'd hear a tree fall and yell "timber." He was in pretty good spirits all things considered. He's pretty sure the house is saved and hopes that they might escort residents back in in the next few days sometimes in this part of Big Tujunga Canyon.

It is a story all to familiar for us Australians and thankfully my family and I have never been caught up in it ourselves, but have come very close. Glad to hear that your folks are ok and in the least have a story to tell. I was listening to a story on the radio about how quickly you can be engulfed by a forest fire, specially when certain types of trees literally explode raining burning chunks around, honestly, it sounds very risky to stay behind and fight these yourself.

Robert -- There is legitimate reason for anon speech, especially on the internet. What I think you really want is a "Personal Global Internet Filter" that allows the removal of the ugliest side-effects. Even looking to the American revolution, pen names and aliases were used countless times by the likes of Thomas Jefferson, et al. There is a legitimate purpose to it... the statement that no revolution was started by anonymous is a bit of a stretch.

One rule for the internet is that all data is equal. The second rule is that there are no other rules. I think Scoble's idea of not anonymity is becoming more a reality with people's lives becoming intertwined with their online identity. I would like to preserve anonymity for whistle blowers, etc. Anonymity is a tool that can be used or abused.

There are certain place on the net that you NEED anonymity !! Take a look at some Forums that ONLY focus on vulnerability disclosures. Each and every one of them is only known by a handle. Chances that you actually associate a handle w/ real name /face is near impossible.

Interesting convo. I actually talked to Mark Hopkins about this. He brought his anon handle into his identity. I've kept mine apart. I don't agree with no one being anonymous; I happily existed online for years and can still write about personal issues and my children without compromising their (or my) privacy.

People can not yell "FIRE" in a crowded room. I can not call my neighbor a "RAPIST" just because I feel like it. Regulated Free Speech is ok. This is a long thread and I may have missed it in a later response, but what about people finding you in person through the internet? I play WoW and my guild leader was stalked by someone who knew only her first name, state, and profession. He called her and flew to her area to find her. This is just a simple case of a nut job, but the internet is full of them. When you bring other countries, with less freedom into the mix things just get messier.

If you are blogging, chatting, or even surfing on-line....odds are pretty good that a determined individual or govt entity can find you out. I don't see good things coming from this. Although I like Facebook, I liked Friendfeed more. Partly because of the environment and the smallness of it. That is now going to be ruined. So, 10-1 odds that Friendfeed will be no more within a year after it gets intergrated into Facebook?

I doubt it Robin. Bret can only give us assurances about the "near future." Here's what I think will happen. Just like Twitter acquired Rael Dornfest and his awesome web services, Stikkit and I Want Sandy vanished (and so did he), Facebook will acquire all the talent from Friendfeed, shut this service down and Facebook will continue to suck.

Nicholas: The upside for Facebook is they just bought an engineering team that's built many of the feature's Facebook's going to need to stay competitive. The upside for FriendFeed's engineering team is $$$ and the ability to build system for a wider audience. FriendFeed's user base is small enough that it'll either get absorbed into Facebook or move on, and FF will become a footnote on the Internet timeline.

trouble is (from my perspective), that the philosophies of the two platforms are at odds. FB wants to bring people to the site and keep them there, while FF is a hub, bringing people in and then sending them back out. (That's part of why it's hard for the newcomer to understand, IMHO.)

Congrats, FF! I'm approaching the situation with cautious optimism. A lot of my friends only share stuff via the Facebook wall/feed, so if Facebook is able to make their feed more like the FF feed (i.e. good, instead of sucktacular) through this acquisition, it's mostly a win for me in the end.

Awful news for users but congratulations to you guys. Ideally, FB will run FF as a distinct service but I'm not hopeful. I don't want the diversity and noise that facebook brings - people doing quizzes on which movie star they resemble and playing silly games. I also wanted to keep my day to day social activity distinct from the targeted information and discussion I use FF for.

While I'm happy for the FF team, since I guess this is what they wanted (congrats guys!), I can't help but think this is the beginning of the end for a great service and a vibrant community. Seriously, what a coincidence! Just on Saturday I claimed to be both twitter- and facebook-free. I loved FF product and personally helped to bring at least a dozen of my friends into the community. I'll stick around for a while though.

Thomas Power still believes that Facebook/FF/Linkedin (2010) will be acquired by Apple (2011) and this is a transitional acquisition in the SN market cycle. The world is shifting to Mac, iTunes, iPhones and FB own the next generation. Apple have $29bn of cash on deposit price is not an issue. Google must jump for twitter while MS fiddle in the sticks with Yahoo. BillG will be back at the MS helm 2012.

Flavio: never heard of lifestream.fm before, but I'm going to go check it out. I'll reiterate, though, that I'm now shy of any service like this, since it can disappear just as it's getting good. I heard about sweetcron.com last night (via http://ff.im/6pR2w). Maybe it's time to move from centralized to distributed again.

Just finished setting up my lifestream.fm at http://lifestream.fm/dfaulkner. Lifestream does what it says, and no more. FF's search blows lifestream away. FF is more flexible about adding source feeds, but lifestream does fine without the flexibility I suppose. FF still wins, or would, if I thought it would be sticking around. :P

I also hate facebook, not because of their silly quizzes and pokes, but because I suspect they would like to maintain massive user base as the determining factor in choosing a social network. I would love to switch to orkut as I use so many other google services, but I can't because nobody else does. That should not be my criteria.... I thought friendfeed would try to make social networks work together.

Friendfeed is not as huge as Facebook but you're doing such terrible work on it. Friendfeed is facing so many many problems these days though facebook doesn't seem to have one. Why?

My mom has six chickens and we get all the eggs we can eat (with 3 kids, that's a lot). I have the best of both worlds, no effort and great eggs. Then again, I do exercise her horses and loan out my husband for grunt work.

Oh, I think chickens are hilarious, even if they can be mean. I took some pics of baby chicks just the other day. I saw them at the farm supply store when I went to get kibble for my kitties. Raising chickens can be a real handful. We had a coop full of them that came with the rental when we lived in Cabo San Lucas, and it was a lot of work. Also, the rooster waking us up at five every morning didn't help. :D

My sister has a dream of using her chicken sheds in the back of hte yard for real chickens. To me, it seems unpleasant. killing them, walking in shit, etc.

As a young pup , I worked for a commercial chicken grower, Each house had 50,000 plus each of the little cheeping fuz balls. Like a golden yellow carpet with black dots. all moving. Ahh those were the days.
