Crying in Public by Civic Center / DETOUR 2012: Design Renegade / SML

The world around us is plastered with messages telling us how to dress, what to drink, and how to behave. DETOUR 2012, Design Renegade, is an experiment in reclaiming our public place, to restore a sense of dignity, curiosity, and basic empathy. Crying in Public is an experiment in defining the city by our emotions. Through a series of street signs, stickers, and chalkboards, passers-by are prompted to pause, reflect, and consider their emotional connection to the city: “Where was the last place you cried?” “Where was your first kiss?” Other signs will redefine specific and often overlooked alleys, parks, and verandas as ideal places for specific emotions like: “This is a good place to feel calm” or “This is a good place to freak out.” Removable vinyl stickers with similar messaging will be distributed across Wan Chai, encouraging citizens to claim their own special places throughout the city. All these materials will encourage people to share their stories on a website customised for...

SML Pro Blog: Photography is an art, not a science. - http://blog.seeminglee.com/2013...
There is a great essay on Luminous Landscape titled “Making images, not taking images” by landscape photographer Peter Myers (1) which I like to point people to as I don’t communicate verbally very well. In essence, the scientific rendering may be a science, but what you choose to process the image is an art. Some photographers form the opinion that zero-processing makes it art (2). The reverse is true. What makes photography an art form is the care taken by the photographer to turn a scientific capture into different images through a conscious processing workflow. In the hands of different photographers, the same capture can become very many different things. In the hands of a single photographer, the same image can also be processed and reprocessed into different images.

SML Pro Blog: Black, white, and graphic design — a look back on my typography in my Yale college days - http://blog.seeminglee.com/2013...
1995 marks the beginning of my graphic design career. I went to Yale originally to study architecture but I decided to take some graphic design classes because I thought that it would help as I didn’t know anything about design. The decision to study art was mostly rebellious in nature. Unlike my classmates who mostly come from a fine art background, I was a science nerd in high school (1). I decided to study art mainly because I was sick of living under the shadow of my older sister (2). I also thought that it would make sense for me to utilize the opportunity to study something I know nothing about (3). The graphic design program at Yale was mostly typography driven. That is, Yale does not really teach graphic design the way other art schools do (4). The only actual “skill” that was taught is typography. There are no rules. Assignments are extremely open-ended.

SML Pro Blog: Order + Chaos - http://blog.seeminglee.com/2013...
One must still have chaos within oneself, to give birth to a dancing star. —Friedrich Nietzsche I am very messy. I am aware of that. I try to stay organized but it is very hard. People often ask me how I can find anything in my mess. Oh but just because you cannot doesn’t mean that I can’t. I have a very good visual memory. I won’t say that it is photographic but if I have read or seen anything I usually remember them. It just has to be visual or audible. They don’t work as well if they are just some abstract things such as words. But if I have seen it then I remember it.

SML Photo Blog: Life Celebrates Diversity - http://photoblog.seeminglee.com/2012...
where I photograph everything mundane to show how divesity is evident in our daily lives as an act for LGBT activism. Originally only the life forms in nature was included, but starting in 2012 I have started photographing things which surrounds our everyday life. You might not understand the absurdity of finding myself in tears photographing everything mundane—food, notebooks, travel souvenirs. To you, they are just that—mundane things in life. To me, it is a life long fight for justice and equality.

Orphion Ping Pong / SML: Bits + Pieces (2012)
Play
The instruments we use changes the way we play. The track was recorded and played live directly on the iPad using Orphion’s “3rds Matrix” grid. The natural position of my right hand touches A4 and A#4. The natural position of my left hand touches F4 and D4. By shifting my hands a note to the left and to the top right, I get RH: F4 F#4 LH: C#4 A#3 and then RH: A#4 B4 LH: F#4 D#4. The whole song are essentially repeated notes of the following 1L: D4 F4 1R: A4 A#4 2L: A#3 C#4 2R: F4 F#4 3L: D#4 F#4 3R: A#4 B4 I don't know what key these are in. I just play. And so while as a classically trained pianist I am conscious of the notes and key signature when I play on a conventional keyboard, Orphion’s seemingly illogical layout renders some nice experimental results which I enjoy. I use the in-app recorder to record my live playing which I then email myself as an M4A file. The file is then placed into Ableton Live where I manually wrap my human-playing into something which sounds somewhat on...

The illusion of diversity: visualizing ownership in the soft drink industry - https://www.msu.edu/~howard...
via SML#P#MN — #smlthankyou Three firms control 89% of US soft drink sales [1]. This dominance is obscured from us by the appearance of numerous choices on retailer shelves. Steve Hannaford refers to this as "pseudovariety," or the illusion of diversity, concealing a lack of real choice [2]. To visualize the extent of pseudovariety in this industry we developed a cluster diagram to represent the number of soft drink brands and varieties found in the refrigerator cases of 94 Michigan retailers, along with their ownership and/or licensing connections.

SML Photo Blog: 寧 Serenity: Part 2 - http://photoblog.seeminglee.com/2012...
I started using Instagram about 2 months ago. As I wrote on SML Pro Blog: Photography requires no expensive cameras, lesser cameras are challenging to control, but because of that it challenges me to push what can be done on it. So now I have more photos for the Serenity series which have received great feedback on both Instagram and Facebook — #smlthankyou! These were all taken with the iPad 3 or iPhone 5 and processed using Snapseed — very grainy but also very fun. I was actually surprised that they receive so much positive feedback because they are simply snaps from my home office.
