The photographer who took this iconic image of the protests in Iran hasn't been heard from since Wednesday. Amir, Amir, where are you? More: - http://tehranlive.org/
is he missing or is he just hiding out?
- geoff hines
Iran is arresting scores of journalists and bloggers. This image deserves the Pulitzer Prize and still is the iconic image of the protests.
- Robert Scoble
Geoff: since he openly identified himself on friendfeed I imagine he's missing.
- Robert Scoble
Geoff: but I hope he's just hiding out.
- Robert Scoble
Wow. that photo i epic. It deserves mass recognition for sure!
- Adam Jackson
Adam: it's the cover of Life Magazine this week. I've seen thousands of images and it still is the iconic image of the protests for me.
- Robert Scoble
His website, http://tehranlive.org , was banned in Iran on Saturday but he still showed up here on FriendFeed after that. Anyone with information about Amir please post here.
- Robert Scoble
I've said the same ever since I first saw it. Women are the key to the moral case of the greens. Incredibly brave women
- Richard Drake
they won't let anyone capture photos or record videos but people are so brave to do this again.I don't know about this photographer ! I hope he'll be ok

This was recently posted on the about section of of his website http://tehranlive.org/about/ "Hello freedom fighters I got an email from one of his loved ones, Amir and some friends did not return last night and were arrested. I have spoken with the Iranian television station people and we ARE going to get the word out today on their tv station about his disappearance. Jon: I was afraid of that. People ask how I can put up with critics. This is how. No one has ever threatened me with jail or death for what I do. I hope one day to meet Amir. He is a hero in my eyes.
- Robert Scoble
I'm praying for his safety (and everyone else's as well).
- joey
Byron: it's clear that other people are helping him get news out. My son and other family members have my passwords so they can take over my accounts after my death.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, thanks so much for popularizing this story. I agree that this photo is the equivalent of the Tiannemen photo. This is no longer, or even ever was, about an election, stolen, rigged, unfair or otherwise. This is about a people no longer will to allowing their theocratic dictatorial masters to control and suppress them. This is about a people wanting to express their natural...

@Robert The courage of Amir and his fellow compatriots is incredible. Lets hope he is safe. Our staff (AFP) are shut in their bureau unable to move and its thanks to people like Amir that the world is aware of whats going on
- Jon Dillon
Misha: the regime in Iran is brutal. Jon: one of my favorite quotes from when I was a photojournalism student is Robert Capa's "If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough." Amir got close enough. It should be noted that Capa died when he got too close to a mine. Amir, it seems, got too close too. Journalists who put their lives in danger to bring us the news are heroes. If you ever are in Washington DC, go and visit the Newseum. You'll see just how many have died to bring us the news.
- Robert Scoble
LIFE posted this under one of his photos on their site (http://is.gd/18v2L) A NOTE TO OUR READERS: We are saddened to report that the Iranian photojournalist, whose pictures appear in this gallery, is missing. Anita: there are dozens of journalists and bloggers in jail. Amir took the iconic image of the protests and now is the iconic leader of those who are in jail. I hope I am able to shake his hand someday. He is a hero to me. It is why I carry my camera almost everywhere. Today I will write Amir on my Canon 5D. I hope I have 1/1000th as much courage as he did making this image. I will probably come up short of even that low bar.
- Robert Scoble
we must not stop to hope for him and his friends. that´s what all these brave people over there teach us at the moment. hope & courage. I´m impressed for life.

All are unable to arrest. There is always someone who will do film or photos and publish it on the Internet.

"If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough." What a great saying. We need to support people like this who are willing to risk everything for the greater good.
- Robert Wilkins
So glad there are people like Amir willing to risk their lives for their fellow man. I hope he's just hiding.

Amir is missing, Please pray for my best Friend Amir :((

For nearly 100 years, we have maintained a thesaurus to tag The New York Times. The thesaurus consists of over a million terms organized into five controlled vocabularies: subjects, personal names, organizations, geographic locations and the titles of creative works (books, movies, plays, etc). At last week’s Semantic Technology Conference, we announced our intention to publish The New York Times thesaurus under a license that will allow the community to both use it and contribute back to it. The results will, in time, prepare The Times to enter the linked data cloud.

“Any concept of batch or delay in development or execution, I think, will not be tolerated by customers anymore,” Benioff said. “Even in development, customers are demanding now that they want to be able to build in that sandbox and deploy immediately, instantly, no delay.”

Another great quote from the article: "While it may not be practical or even possible to have true real time for everything, most companies should be tapped into some form of real time availability of information that occurs outside their four walls. If not, they stand a real chance of being left behind."

- Jannifer @wordsforliving
I wasn't expecting that reaction Kol. What is so wrong about it?
- Alejandro
sheesh kol.... ?? what's so bothersome about it? Just trying to understand you know.. :o/
- Rob Sellen :o)
The images are completely off topic to the two sports groups, simple as this. Post the pics to the other group, post the news to the two sports groups.
- Kol Tregaskes
Kol... why do you take it so serious? THAT is what I am trying to understand... I can obviously see its not exactly them in tennis clothes with a racquet in hand... ;o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
I have nothing more to say, see my comments above.
- Kol Tregaskes
I am just trying to understand the logic that's all mate. Seems you want EVERY single image or post to be 100% on topic? if not why unsub just cos of one post?
- Rob Sellen :o)
Correct. Unsubbed? Because I still see this entry. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
hhmmm... just thinking you know.. I am NOT subbed to this, I just saw it.. but you still saw it, so why bother unsubbing just cos of one image post? if you still see it anyway lol.. and, you are bound to have to have the odd off topicish post.. else it gets boring...
- Rob Sellen :o)
I don't know how to explain it any simpler, Rob, sorry. I subbed to two sports groups expecting to see sports-related entries, then I get this! I see your replies, if that's what you mean, because of the notifier.
- Kol Tregaskes
No.. I mean, yeah this still pops up if someone comments, so why unsub, I mean, then you miss out on the real ON topic stuff from any rooms etc. This is one of the funny things about this place you know. ;o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
Like wouldn't it just be better to hide the off topic stuff?
- Rob Sellen :o)
Because I fear the two groups will be misused again of course. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
Well.. UNTIL that happens..you just roll with it eh mate. thing is, it may not ;o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
Sorry, admins should step in here + the poster should correct the error too but I see neither atm.
- Kol Tregaskes
why its not SO off topic.. that's the point.. I mean, if it was pics of say paris hilton..yeah that IS way off topic. ;o) really you ought not to take it all so serious mate. ;o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
For what it's worth, I encourage more of this type of group misuse. ;-)
- Andrew
lmao @ Andrew.. if its like this...hmmmmm.. ;o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
Well there you go, thanks Andrew, I won't be subbing back.
- Kol Tregaskes
lol.. lighten up kol... its harmless.... you know didn't one of them pics at least put a smile on your face?
- Rob Sellen :o)
There was no error, so I have nothing to correct. I'll make sure any of my shares to your groups have no images from now on, Kol. And if you don't want to see this entry anymore, you are gonna have hide me. I have no idea why you reacted like this. It was just for fun.
- Alejandro
Images are fine, unrelated images are not. It's up to you, Alejandro though but it's pretty easy to have two separate entries for the two types of images. Oh well. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
In a way Kol... you will have to STICK rules up if you want things to run exactly how you want them in your rooms... but in others you will have to lighten up a bit and not take them so seriously. its silly lol :o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
they ARE related.. they are sports players. ;o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
These two are not. If they were I would have corrected this entry, sorry hiding now and please stop telling me to lighten up, Rob, it has nothing to do with that.
- Kol Tregaskes
Well I asked cos you say the "admin" should correct it... so now you are telling others how to run their groups? :o/ YES you should lighten up mate IMO...it seems to be so trivial..
- Rob Sellen :o)
sorry, no offence, I just tried to understand your reasoning...
- Rob Sellen :o)
Alejandro... I am disappointed in you.... you had to wait for an excuse to share them with us??? wtf? sort it out lol ;o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
Ahh, just experienced that myself, blamed friendfeed - I take it back Friendfeed, you're still awesome!

Oops, it was our fault. Apparently the other clients getting dups were just a coincidence. Sorry

Stunning pictures of 'hole in the clouds' as astronauts witness volcano eruption from the International Space Station - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/science...
A chance recording by astronauts on the International Space Station has captured the moment a volcano explosively erupted, sending massive shockwaves through the atmosphere. Sarychev Peak, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, had been sitting quietly in the Kuril Island chain near Japan for 20 years, when it suddenly sprang to life on June 12. Fortuitously, the International Space Station was flying overhead at the time, and managed to capture this spectacular image of the ash-cloud tearing through the atmosphere, sending clouds scattering in its wake in a perfect circle. The station, which orbits the earth from a height of 220 miles, makes nearly 16 orbits of our planet every 24 hours, and happened to be in the perfect spot to see the dramatic eruption. The unique images have provided a wealth of new information about the eruption process, and volcanologists are now excitedly poring over the data. Most unique is the mist-like 'roof' to the cloud, believed to be either steam...

I welcome all new developments in the field of mobile computing, and this certainly looks better than previous iterations of the Android OS. Interestingly enough, the Orange UK video doesn't tout Flash capability, nor, indeed, much of Android either. Perhaps we should withhold the judgement until the first user reports complaining of bulk –this thing looks thick– and battery-eating Flash appear?

Interesting. But screw 'em for including Flash. The only possible good thing about flash on mobile is the distantly remote chance that memory saving techniques might feed back into the desktop version.
- Andy Bold
I would much rather see a phone support HTML5 more than flash, since HTML5 will replace flash soon.
- Wizetux
HTML5 has yet to be finalized, whereas phone manufacturers have to get their wares out now, not when W3 deems it stable and mature enough for them to invest in a brand new parser/renderer (latest editor draft http://w3.org/html/wg/html5/ says out right: "Different parts of this specification are at different levels of maturity.") Hence the Flash, fat good it'll do them.

a very interesting analysis - especially when you consider the volume of bits. Great writeup Steven. Facebook is sitting on top of a veritable gold mine that they have yet to tap. They drilled their test hole with Beacon a few years back and had to reset things, but I think it's only a matter of time before they turn on an evolutionary affinity-based model building on the reputation/trust networks that are reflected in one's social graph. I think there's serious $$$ to be extracted by FB and it has the potential to make AdSense obsolete/irrelevant. Fascinating stuff.
- Brian Daniel Eisenberg
@Brian the turning point for my thoughts on the matter were the two posts I quoted from in mine. I'm not sure I like the idea an AOLesque locked garden of data that is Facebook. In some ways I see it as a regression of every move forward the web has made. Granted Google is just another for profit corporation (which is fine) but at least there was a lot more 'openness' from them than...

Hard Drive shopping. Love to benefit from FF user's experience. This has my attention: Western Digital's My Book® Studio Edition™ II - http://store.westerndigital.com/store...
The Studio Edition drives have a 5 year warranty, which is PRICELESS. However, if you're going RAID striped, you run a huge risk of data loss. I had a 'dual disk' external once: one drive fails, both drives useless.
- mike fabio
all depends on how much space you're needing, I go with RAID1 or better, look for durablity & the performance tests. It's now wholly about the throughput of the line, as much as the throughput of the bus & disks. I've had good success with tthese, which I use on windows, osx & linux http://eshop.macsales.com/shop...

though, personally I use Drobo; because it's the closest to an enterprise system at a much lower cost

All I have to say is don't do Maxtor if you can avoid it. I'm actually surprised my two OneTouches are still alive, but I had a 250GB Maxtor which died and I have a pile of HDDs that died over the years that I decided to start wiping entirely -- only the Maxtors in the bunch do not spin up at all. I have no idea how I'm going to wipe my old data on those - maybe sledgehammer...

"About 500,000 total people watched Apple (AAPL) announce the iPhone 3GS over live-streaming site Ustream. Those viewers spent an average of around 15 minutes watching 20 or so different Ustream feeds. Each feed featured a lay-over ad by default. Those numbers completely blow us away. Consider that during the week of June 1, Comedy Central drew 523,000 viewers during any given hour. Last we checked, Fox Business claims something like 6,000 simultaneous viewers. CNBC's Jim Cramer draws 300,000 on a good night."

true but they have to see the value that Kevin, Jason, Alex and others are bring to their product by talking about it on each flight they go and might want to just make sure they continue to do so as other companies begin to roll this out on their flights as well.
