Amir got close enough. It should be noted that Capa died when he got too close to a mine. Amir, it seems, got too close too. Journalists who put their lives in danger to bring us the news are heroes. Anita: there are dozens of journalists and bloggers in jail. Amir took the iconic image of the protests and now is the iconic leader of those who are in jail. I hope I am able to shake his hand someday. He is a hero to me. It is why I carry my camera almost everywhere. Today I will write Amir on my Canon 5D. He is being held in the notorious Evin Prison in Tehran since his arrest on Saturday. His family received a phone call from him yesterday and they are hopeful of his safe return soon. God only knows what they are doing to him in that hell-hole. Pray for him.

For nearly 100 years, we have maintained a thesaurus to tag The New York Times. The thesaurus consists of over a million terms organized into five controlled vocabularies: subjects, personal names, organizations, geographic locations and the titles of creative works (books, movies, plays, etc). At last week’s Semantic Technology Conference, we announced our intention to publish The New York Times thesaurus under a license that will allow the community to both use it and contribute back to it. The results will, in time, prepare The Times to enter the linked data cloud.

Sarychev Peak, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, had been sitting quietly in the Kuril Island chain near Japan for 20 years, when it suddenly sprang to life on June 12. Fortuitously, the International Space Station was flying overhead at the time, and managed to capture this spectacular image of the ash-cloud tearing through the atmosphere, sending clouds scattering in its wake in a perfect circle. The station, which orbits the earth from a height of 220 miles, makes nearly 16 orbits of our planet every 24 hours, and happened to be in the perfect spot to see the dramatic eruption. HTML5 has yet to be finalized, whereas phone manufacturers have to get their wares out now, not when W3 deems it stable and mature enough for them to invest in a brand new parser/renderer (latest editor draft http://w3.org/html/wg/html5/ says out right: "Different parts of this specification are at different levels of maturity.") Hence the Flash, fat good it'll do them.

Great writeup Steven. Facebook is sitting on top of a veritable gold mine that they have yet to tap. They drilled their test hole with Beacon a few years back and had to reset things, but I think it's only a matter of time before they turn on an evolutionary affinity-based model building on the reputation/trust networks that are reflected in one's social graph. I think there's serious $$$ to be extracted by FB and it has the potential to make AdSense obsolete/irrelevant. Fascinating stuff.

The Studio Edition drives have a 5 year warranty, which is PRICELESS. However, if you're going RAID striped, you run a huge risk of data loss. I had a 'dual disk' external once: one drive fails, both drives useless.

all depends on how much space you're needing, I go with RAID1 or better, look for durablity & the performance tests. It's now wholly about the throughput of the line, as much as the throughput of the bus & disks. All I have to say is don't do Maxtor if you can avoid it. I'm actually surprised my two OneTouches are still alive, but I had a 250GB Maxtor which died and I have a pile of HDDs that died over the years that I decided to start wiping entirely -- only the Maxtors in the bunch do not spin up at all. I have no idea how I'm going to wipe my old data on those - maybe sledgehammer...

Those viewers spent an average of around 15 minutes watching 20 or so different Ustream feeds. Each feed featured a lay-over ad by default. Those numbers completely blow us away. Consider that during the week of June 1, Comedy Central drew 523,000 viewers during any given hour. Last we checked, Fox Business claims something like 6,000 simultaneous viewers. I'm not really surprised - though at the time we thought we were watching the only stream from inside. By the end, our beleaguered - considering some of the complaints the poor guy had to put up with - streamer had about 20,000 people watching his stream. Thanks, Steve - you know who you are.
