Mmmm... fry some of that up in a skillet and I'm THERE!
- iTad
ewwww!!! nasty !!!!! Damn the economy really has gone to hell in a handbasket hasn't it?! yikes!
- Susan Beebe
Being slightly alergic to Pork, there is so much wrong with that picture
- Jesse Stay
Susan, I would argue your statement would be true if I showed you a price tag and an empty rack. But the Spam was still there... and Mona, you're SO in denial. :-)
- Louis Gray
How much does that reconstituted junk cost?
- Susan Beebe
I can't help but think "Junk E-Mail In A Can" ;)
- Tyson Key
I've never eaten that one, but I do sometimes eat the lower sodium spam in sandwich with cucumber or tomato - and I so don't eat junk or fast food, but spam at least has taste, which is more than you can say for the meat in a McD etc.
- Ian May
Spam and scrambled egg musubi = yum! I think having that substituting regular spam would probably broke da mout to levels unknown before. Must find.
- Arlan K.
Just was talking to http://www.friendfeed.com/garin and we came to the conclusion that if you are going to comment on a friendfeed item you should either be first or last. Why? They always are visible. So, here's your chance! :-)
Any worthy FF thread will engage interested parties enough to read most of the comments.
- iTad
Do I get bonus points if I end up being the thread killer?
- Kevin Johnson
Kevin you could always delete your 1st comment. :)
- rob friedman
Kevin! Yes, and we're having a great time watching this. It will get old fast, but for now it's really fun!
- Robert Scoble
Dang it I am 5 min too late. So I guess it is like posting on a blog post, you always want to be first.
- Jeff
Hey Enrique.. that would suck. Oh... LAST! Oh Jeff... Last.
- Ted Bradford II
That's why these threads just go on and on and on... people just want to have the last word. ;-P
- Chris Heath
Chris: I don't want the last word. I want the penultimate word. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Nope, I like the riffng of the conversation. Jump in anywhere. Enjoy the free flow of ideas and worry not about being seen by the scanners. Those who take the time to expand the thread have such a richer experience.
- michael sean wright
if i wasn't so tired i'd play that out Chris (as my last post was truly in jest). Late here in East TN. Gonna go tip a few cows and call it a day.
- Ted Bradford II
Ted: so was mine ... didn't you catch the winky tongue? (i'm on cape fear so i'm soon to bed as well)
- Chris Heath
Good point, unless you're actually using the RT chat aspect of FriendFeed, I guess...
- Andy Werner
I actually come back 5 days later to make comments so I can have the last word. Everyone has already forgotten what the conversation is about by then.
- Jeff
Chris- I did, but needed a segue into a cow tipping joke... cause I've never done so before. I do know this, tomorrow I will use the word 'penultimate' and dazzle family and friends. Hope alls quiet on the Cape bro. These storms have been a biotch. Annnnnnd Jeff just trumped us all. Tell him what he's won Enrique... nite all.
- Ted Bradford II
Second to last is always visible on my screen. :)
- Bwana ☠
Clever way to get the most commented upon comment on FF ever....
- Barak B
Ted, if you haven't dozed off- i'll have you know that the coastal winds tend to keep a lot of the storm systems at bay- if you're close enough to the water - a mile or 5 inland can make a big difference some days - and spot t/storms can be localized around here big time - for instance yesterday it rained (for a short period) at my house while i was at work 5 miles away getting no rain - only knew cuz the ground was wet when i went home for lunch... ok - it's really time for sleep now - g'nite FriendFeed
- Chris Heath
friendfeed should allow for "liking" comments so top comments can be the ones shown, no matter the chronology. And allow the users to watch comments by likes, threaded or chronologically.
- Charbax
A blatant attempt at gaming the FriendFeed statistics for no real useful purpose... Oooh, can I be last, Please Please!!!
- Peter Kelley
No, Peter, you may not be last. That's my position.
- Chris Charabaruk
Are trying to go for the longest comment thread again?
- Amit Morson
Amit: no, most times one post gets hidden.
- Robert Scoble
In a different timezone you can have the advantage :)
- Rene de Vries
Okay, people, nothing to see here. Just walk on. This is the last comment. It's all clear now.
- Ruud van Wijngaarden
What if you write backwards? Does that help?
- Kieran Daly
Okay, people, nothing to see here. Just walk on. This is the last comment. It's all clear now. says Ruud van Wijngaarden
- Julian Edward
It would be nice if we could pick the number of comments shown at the top and bottom, I'd like to see the first 3 and last 3 for example.
- Kol Tregaskes
I usually read all the comments of something I'm interested in. I don't just read the top and bottom ones so I don't care where I come in. I comment on what I want to because I want to say something. It's nice if the original poster reads/responds to it, but not absolutely necessary. Most of the time the most fun/interaction comes from other commenters.
- Molly
Being last has one drawback. It makes you a thread-killer. I'm not sure some of us like being that. Sometimes I'd rather see the discussion keep going.
- George Hall (Australia)
Do like the suggestion made earlier that there should be bonus points for being the thread-killer...
- George Hall (Australia)
And there is nothing I hate more than reading that first comment that childishly claims "First!" and nothing more. "Last!" (until the next comment comes along)
- Jim Espinoza
By the way, I'm the last commenter in a very participated thread recently started by Robert Scoble, but that didn't gain me almost any new follower. I'm fine with this though, as I'd find silly being advantaged for being the last commenter ;-)
- Opensource Obscure
112 comments - but there can never be last comment, can there? Unless there is a FF limit on the number of comments - Paul, is there a limit?
- WoH: Minding her Steves
The current last comment is the next penultimate comment.
- Brian Sullivan
Not everyone is on here to market themselves to infinity. Why people, other than people who actually make money off of exposure, insist on wanting the most friends on ff/fb/ms/tt is beyond me. Not everyone is a Scobilite! Yes I did just make that word up... where do I copyright it? lol
- Jason Williams
Didn't someone blog about tinyurl's dominance a while back - about how they have too much power. Might have been Gillmor or Winer
- Bwana ☠
Winer. I don't think they have too much power
- Steve Gillmor
Kevin: i did not say it was spam. I put the smiley face indicating my partial joking nature. but only partial.
- Jeff
Robert: I could not figure out how to disable comments for particular post. It is really not a big issue since I have gmail, but I do think this post may never die.
- Jeff
I seem to be last on many of Steve Gillmor's posts @techcrunchit, the kiss of death to many a conversation. I should be so lucky here.
- Aron Michalski
from fftogo
A good way to stop? - Scoble puts in his penultimate comment Kevin Johnson says zaloom!
- Julian Edward
This is the Seinfeld of FF....the post and comments about nothing. I wonder what the record is for the most comments on FF?
- Jeff
As a fine-art platform, as a painting, do you think anyone would be interested in a full-screen image feed animated by Judith Supine? http://www.flickr.com/photos...
- stephen harlow
I like most anything distilled...information, bait...(distilled bait...is that like the worm at the bottom of the mezcal?)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
The difference would be that in this case the worm will stay on the bottom. No matter what.
- Ruud van Wijngaarden
I reckon it'll be Ruud van Wijngaarden
- Julian Edward
I am not quite sure about that. But willing to accept it. (Wait! You just called me a worm? The most underrated but valuable animal on the planet, that brings us fertile ground and eats dead stuff? It is a nice compliment, but might be a bit much).
- Ruud van Wijngaarden
No, No! - I didn't mean you worm. Although as you say they are useful beings. I do hope you'lll be in heroic position of last commenter! This is a case of the last shall be second. (Kevin Johnson being first of course). Scoble is penultimate we would hope. I'm aiming for 5th to last!
- Julian Edward
Yesterday somebody asked: 'if you pass the number two in a race, which place are you in?' and I answered wrong. Passing the last one in this race will be hard...
- Ruud van Wijngaarden
you mean Twitter Gar1n? You were talking on TWITTER WEREN'T YOU! LIAR "friendfeeed Garin" pfttttt still the same bi-polar
- The Real sofarsoShawn
Interesting comment, SFSS, very interesting indeed. So interesting, in fact, that I think that nothing further needs to be added to this thread. Ever.
- WoH: Minding her Steves
אתם כל כך מלא חרא, אבל זו בעיה שלך, לא שלי :-)
- David Gross
from email
actually i don't know how not to be the last commenter :)
- İ. Emre Kutlu
If only I could puncture the depths of Scoble's scratch-the-surface brain fart, techno-vangelizing, then I'd actually care WHOLE HEARTEDLY about this meaningfully retarded thread.
- The Real sofarsoShawn
The only way this thread can be made even more ridiculous and anachronistic is to move it to identi.ca.. Myspace would work, too.
- Tal Shafik
And since you can't guarantee being last unless you are the originator of the thread or can convince the originator to end comments (but since Robert is AWOL that is unlikely) -- you better be first. ;-)
- Brian Sullivan
we went to peter lugers last night. my daughter emily took a bunch of cool photos including this one of the way we paid for dinner. lugers is cash only.

The photographer who took this iconic image of the protests in Iran hasn't been heard from since Wednesday. Amir, Amir, where are you? More: - http://tehranlive.org/
is he missing or is he just hiding out?
- geoff hines
Iran is arresting scores of journalists and bloggers. This image deserves the Pulitzer Prize and still is the iconic image of the protests.
- Robert Scoble
Geoff: since he openly identified himself on friendfeed I imagine he's missing.
- Robert Scoble
Geoff: but I hope he's just hiding out.
- Robert Scoble
Wow. that photo i epic. It deserves mass recognition for sure!
- Adam Jackson
Adam: it's the cover of Life Magazine this week. I've seen thousands of images and it still is the iconic image of the protests for me.
- Robert Scoble
His website, http://tehranlive.org , was banned in Iran on Saturday but he still showed up here on FriendFeed after that. Anyone with information about Amir please post here.
- Robert Scoble
I've said the same ever since I first saw it. Women are the key to the moral case of the greens. Incredibly brave women
- Richard Drake
they won't let anyone capture photos or record videos but people are so brave to do this again.I don't know about this photographer ! I hope he'll be ok
- Viva Vida
This was recently posted on the about section of of his website http://tehranlive.org/about/ "Hello freedom fighters I got an email from one of his loved ones, Amir and some friends did not return last night and were arrested. I have spoken with the Iranian television station people and we ARE going to get the word out today on their tv station about his disappearance. Please stay strong. ian Ian said this on 21 June, 2009 at 7:38 pm | Reply "
- Jon Dillon
Jon: I was afraid of that. People ask how I can put up with critics. This is how. No one has ever threatened me with jail or death for what I do. I hope one day to meet Amir. He is a hero in my eyes.
- Robert Scoble
I'm praying for his safety (and everyone else's as well).
- joey
Byron: it's clear that other people are helping him get news out. My son and other family members have my passwords so they can take over my accounts after my death.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, thanks so much for popularizing this story. I agree that this photo is the equivalent of the Tiannemen photo. This is no longer, or even ever was, about an election, stolen, rigged, unfair or otherwise. This is about a people no longer will to allowing their theocratic dictatorial masters to control and suppress them. This is about a people wanting to express their natural...

@Robert The courage of Amir and his fellow compatriots is incredible. Lets hope he is safe. Our staff (AFP) are shut in their bureau unable to move and its thanks to people like Amir that the world is aware of whats going on
- Jon Dillon
Misha: the regime in Iran is brutal. Jon: one of my favorite quotes from when I was a photojournalism student is Robert Capa's "If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough." Amir got close enough. It should be noted that Capa died when he got too close to a mine. Amir, it seems, got too close too. Journalists who put their lives in danger to bring us the news are heroes. If you ever are in Washington DC, go and visit the Newseum. You'll see just how many have died to bring us the news.
- Robert Scoble
LIFE posted this under one of his photos on their site (http://is.gd/18v2L) A NOTE TO OUR READERS: We are saddened to report that the Iranian photojournalist, whose pictures appear in this gallery, is missing. He has not been in contact with us; this morning we received the following email from one of his relatives. We will update this space when we have more details. THE EMAIL: Hi im...

Anita: there are dozens of journalists and bloggers in jail. Amir took the iconic image of the protests and now is the iconic leader of those who are in jail. I hope I am able to shake his hand someday. He is a hero to me. It is why I carry my camera almost everywhere. Today I will write Amir on my Canon 5D. I hope I have 1/1000th as much courage as he did making this image. I will probably come up short of even that low bar.
- Robert Scoble
"If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough." What a great saying. We need to support people like this who are willing to risk everything for the greater good.
- Robert Wilkins
Amir is missing, Please pray for my best Friend Amir :((
- Havang
Havang you know Amir? I hope he turns out OK. Please keep safe.
- Robert Scoble
Yes I know him, he is one of my best friends, it's been a few days that we have no news of him
- Havang
Currently no way to have no communication with him.

New tweet from @LIFE 'No further word from our Iranian photojournalist. His family says he was arrested. We hope for better news soon'
- Anita Hunt
OMG, I'm in tears not only for Amir and others who are going through their own holocausts but the beautiful words on this thread! You people are amazing! FF is amazing for giving us this platform.
- Myrna
@Havang: we'll pray for Amir and for the other missing / arrested people, we will not let you alone
- Chiara
Yes Chiara, its true Havang. You're not alone!
- Myrna
According to this article there are now 33 Iranian journalists and bloggers in jail http://bit.ly/Ejq81 - I am sure there must be many more. God Bless them and Keep them Safe from Harm.

++Ireneusz "All are unable to arrest. There is always someone who will do film or photos and publish it on the Internet." - as long as there are people like Amir and Ireneusz to keep reporting and keep taking photos and keep believing, the message will be heard and change will come! HIs family is asking to keep his name out of the press for now, because the authorities may not know who he is, in terms of his photos and blog. He may have been picked up for having a camera at the demonstration.

it is confirmed by Amir's family that he is home with them now. Just released from Prison. We do not know how he is doing other than he is happy to be home. I will update here as I get more information.

If they now enabled the (push) mail portion of that thing it'd be perfect...
- Holger Eilhard
Holger, I'm not sure Push Mail gives me much - IMAP has been sufficient for me. The contacts and calendar are where I want real-time sync.
- Jesse Stay
A colleague with his first iPod Touch asked me this question this morning and couldn't remember what hack I used so sent him Jesse's link. He was delighted it worked for him and easy for a non-geek to follow. Nice one, Jesse.
- Sally Church
Thanks Sally - I couldn't find the link either which I had used so I figured it would help to give it a little more Google juice for others looking for the same.

“Any concept of batch or delay in development or execution, I think, will not be tolerated by customers anymore,” Benioff said. “Even in development, customers are demanding now that they want to be able to build in that sandbox and deploy immediately, instantly, no delay.”

Another great quote from the article: "While it may not be practical or even possible to have true real time for everything, most companies should be tapped into some form of real time availability of information that occurs outside their four walls. If not, they stand a real chance of being left behind."
- Andrew Terry
@Robert - after reading this, I'm sure I won't be alone in thinking that Mr. Benioff would be a great candidate for a Building 43 interview...
- Andrew Terry
Andrew: I would love to have Marc on.
- Robert Scoble
Wait - SURELY there's a beautiful men group on here somewhere! If not, let me know so I can go create one. Everyone knows men look better. LOL (no seriously men look better)
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
I wasn't expecting that reaction Kol. What is so wrong about it?
- Alejandro
sheesh kol.... ?? what's so bothersome about it? Just trying to understand you know.. :o/
- Rob Sellen :o)
The images are completely off topic to the two sports groups, simple as this. Post the pics to the other group, post the news to the two sports groups.
- Kol Tregaskes
Kol... why do you take it so serious? THAT is what I am trying to understand... I can obviously see its not exactly them in tennis clothes with a racquet in hand... ;o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
I have nothing more to say, see my comments above.
- Kol Tregaskes
I am just trying to understand the logic that's all mate. Seems you want EVERY single image or post to be 100% on topic? if not why unsub just cos of one post?
- Rob Sellen :o)
Correct. Unsubbed? Because I still see this entry. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
hhmmm... just thinking you know.. I am NOT subbed to this, I just saw it.. but you still saw it, so why bother unsubbing just cos of one image post? if you still see it anyway lol.. and, you are bound to have to have the odd off topicish post.. else it gets boring...
- Rob Sellen :o)
I don't know how to explain it any simpler, Rob, sorry. I subbed to two sports groups expecting to see sports-related entries, then I get this! I see your replies, if that's what you mean, because of the notifier.
- Kol Tregaskes
No.. I mean, yeah this still pops up if someone comments, so why unsub, I mean, then you miss out on the real ON topic stuff from any rooms etc. This is one of the funny things about this place you know. ;o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
Like wouldn't it just be better to hide the off topic stuff?
- Rob Sellen :o)
Because I fear the two groups will be misused again of course. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
Well.. UNTIL that happens..you just roll with it eh mate. thing is, it may not ;o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
Sorry, admins should step in here + the poster should correct the error too but I see neither atm.
- Kol Tregaskes
why its not SO off topic.. that's the point.. I mean, if it was pics of say paris hilton..yeah that IS way off topic. ;o) really you ought not to take it all so serious mate. ;o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
For what it's worth, I encourage more of this type of group misuse. ;-)
- Andrew
lmao @ Andrew.. if its like this...hmmmmm.. ;o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
Well there you go, thanks Andrew, I won't be subbing back.
- Kol Tregaskes
lol.. lighten up kol... its harmless.... you know didn't one of them pics at least put a smile on your face?
- Rob Sellen :o)
There was no error, so I have nothing to correct. I'll make sure any of my shares to your groups have no images from now on, Kol. And if you don't want to see this entry anymore, you are gonna have hide me. I have no idea why you reacted like this. It was just for fun.
- Alejandro
Images are fine, unrelated images are not. It's up to you, Alejandro though but it's pretty easy to have two separate entries for the two types of images. Oh well. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
In a way Kol... you will have to STICK rules up if you want things to run exactly how you want them in your rooms... but in others you will have to lighten up a bit and not take them so seriously. its silly lol :o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
they ARE related.. they are sports players. ;o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
These two are not. If they were I would have corrected this entry, sorry hiding now and please stop telling me to lighten up, Rob, it has nothing to do with that.
- Kol Tregaskes
Well I asked cos you say the "admin" should correct it... so now you are telling others how to run their groups? :o/ YES you should lighten up mate IMO...it seems to be so trivial..
- Rob Sellen :o)
sorry, no offence, I just tried to understand your reasoning...
- Rob Sellen :o)
Alejandro... I am disappointed in you.... you had to wait for an excuse to share them with us??? wtf? sort it out lol ;o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
Ahh, just experienced that myself, blamed friendfeed - I take it back Friendfeed, you're still awesome!
- Mark Edmondson
Oops, it was our fault. Apparently the other clients getting dups were just a coincidence. Sorry

Hey I could create an embedded Friendfeed widget thingy for just a search query, filter set, room / group, etc... man, this could be fun!
- Susan Beebe
Susan, yep it's pretty cool. I wish it wasn't in a frame but I guess that's impossible.
- Kol Tregaskes
I love it. But at the same time, as an attention whore, I worry that my readers will just start going straight to my FriendFeed, instead of my site.
- Brad Williamson
Brad - you can configure FriendFeed so that your links go to the "source", e.g. your blog :)
- Susan Beebe
Pretty cool feature indeed! Used it on a few blog posts a while back as well.

I welcome all new developments in the field of mobile computing, and this certainly looks better than previous iterations of the Android OS. Interestingly enough, the Orange UK video doesn't tout Flash capability, nor, indeed, much of Android either. Perhaps we should withhold the judgement until the first user reports complaining of bulk –this thing looks thick– and battery-eating Flash appear?

No keyboard but wow that is a great looking phone. My Blackberry love is waning.
- Tony
i've been thinking about getting another htc but maybe i'll wait now...that is a seriously good looking phone.

provided I could get the phone unlocked for the US and find a plan that offers cheap tethering, I'd consider trading my iPhone for it
- Arvin Dang
from BuddyFeed
I would much rather see a phone support HTML5 more than flash, since HTML5 will replace flash soon.
- Wizetux
HTML5 has yet to be finalized, whereas phone manufacturers have to get their wares out now, not when W3 deems it stable and mature enough for them to invest in a brand new parser/renderer (latest editor draft http://w3.org/html/wg/html5/ says out right: "Different parts of this specification are at different levels of maturity.") Hence the Flash, fat good it'll do them.
- ianf ⌘
a very interesting analysis - especially when you consider the volume of bits. Google, it seems, is not just algorithmically and passively ingesting, but is also pursuing the establishment of core centers where you can actively deposit your "data". Google Docs is an example. an interesting expansion is Google Wave. I viewed the launch video - http://wave.google.com/ - and it looks that...

Hard Drive shopping. Love to benefit from FF user's experience. This has my attention: Western Digital's My Book® Studio Edition™ II - http://store.westerndigital.com/store...
The Studio Edition drives have a 5 year warranty, which is PRICELESS. However, if you're going RAID striped, you run a huge risk of data loss. I had a 'dual disk' external once: one drive fails, both drives useless.
- mike fabio
all depends on how much space you're needing, I go with RAID1 or better, look for durablity & the performance tests. It's now wholly about the throughput of the line, as much as the throughput of the bus & disks. I've had good success with tthese, which I use on windows, osx & linux http://eshop.macsales.com/shop...
- clarke thomas
though, personally I use Drobo; because it's the closest to an enterprise system at a much lower cost

I have one of these and I like it. I wrote a review a while back: http://www.raoulpop.com/2008.... Fwiw, I also have three Drobos, and I like them a lot as well.

Use the studio on our, wait for it, studio PC. Solid device but the essential series are good too. Plus shiny.

Been using one of these for about a year and a half. I'd recommend one.

I don't have as much to backup so I use the smaller passport series of drives along with SyncBac (windows only I think) which syncs the stuff on my laptop that I wanted backedup to the external drive.
- Bill Rawlinson
I love my passport.. it's amazing how small and light it is and still holds 450GB.. but check this out if you have any odd behaviour on your second computer: http://cf-bill.blogspot.com/2009...

I have a WD Passport and it's great. I just wish I had went with FireWire.

The undulating light on the front of this thing is pretty groovy. I'm a little embarrassed by how mesmerized I am by it.

All I have to say is don't do Maxtor if you can avoid it. I'm actually surprised my two OneTouches are still alive, but I had a 250GB Maxtor which died and I have a pile of HDDs that died over the years that I decided to start wiping entirely -- only the Maxtors in the bunch do not spin up at all. I have no idea how I'm going to wipe my old data on those - maybe sledgehammer...
- Tamar Weinberg
I seem to remember putting a Maxtor drive in my desktop: so far, so good--but doing a massive backup--hopefully, I'm good!

"About 500,000 total people watched Apple (AAPL) announce the iPhone 3GS over live-streaming site Ustream. Those viewers spent an average of around 15 minutes watching 20 or so different Ustream feeds. Each feed featured a lay-over ad by default. Those numbers completely blow us away. Consider that during the week of June 1, Comedy Central drew 523,000 viewers during any given hour. Last we checked, Fox Business claims something like 6,000 simultaneous viewers. CNBC's Jim Cramer draws 300,000 on a good night."

Reserved! 32GB #apple#iphone 3G[S] Black - #ATT told me I they would graciously provide me with an Early Upgrade, for a $200 fee on top of what new customers would pay... $499, but I'm a sucker like that I suppose 'cause the first gen was in hand on day two at 0800. Fingers crossed for another rebate :-)
true but they have to see the value that Kevin, Jason, Alex and others are bring to their product by talking about it on each flight they go and might want to just make sure they continue to do so as other companies begin to roll this out on their flights as well.
- Brandon Weir
Jason gives away advertising all the time. Everyone does it. You like something, you talk about it. Calacanis is just more vocal about it.
- Jimmy Johnson
Guru, there's reportedly a Snow Leopard banner hanging in Moscone in plain view...which likely wouldn't be there unless there was *some* update :)
- AllisonWagda
If it was Banana Computers we'd just get more phallic jokes.
- Dean Clark
Will they announce the new Iphone tomorrow? I'm ready to make the switch. I'm just hesitant about AT&T, like when Robert called in on the Gilmor Gang take 2 from his car the quality sounded terrible.
- Stephen Pickering
Dickson: it's a meme I've been on since 1977 when my dad brought home an Apple II and Hyde Jr. High let me help unbox its first Apple II.
- Robert Scoble
Occasionally I use my iPhone to make phone calls.
- Brett Nordquist
Developers Developers Developers Developers Developers
- Khaled A
The only thing about the camera in the front is how do you see what you are taking a photo of?
- Stephen Pickering
Brett, what is the call quality like? I've been on CDMA my whole cell phone life, well except for the analog years
- Stephen Pickering
Tyler: you're right, 50 "Apples" is too many. I should have only put 43 here. ;-)
- Robert Scoble
I wonder if they will make a Touch with ear and mouthpiece so that with a MiFi card you could have an Iphone on the Verizon or Sprint network
- Stephen Pickering
Stephen: The quality seems OK. I was with Sprint and Verizon the past 8 years. I like the iPhone for the apps and it's like having a mini-computer with me at all times. The few calls I make sound OK but not wonderful.
- Brett Nordquist
Would love to see them make iTunes allow more than 5 computers authorization
- Patrick
from twhirl
Is Friendfeed where you guys hang out when Twitter is slow? More action here tonigh!
- Brett Nordquist
+1 patrick, yeah ive had to clear all authorized computers more than once because of that
- Tyler Gillies
brett -- when isn't twitter slow? ;)
- Tyler Gillies
Thanks Brett, that's what I thought. Btw Twitter is ALWAYS slow, always has been even when there was no one on it
- Stephen Pickering
I bought two iPhones in March so I won't be upgrading for a while. I got my spouse one wondering if she'd use it. And now there's no way I could pry it out of her hands. She's taken to it like I would have never imagined. She's into the simple games, but she LOVES it.
- Brett Nordquist
one way I am hoping a great, revolutionary new iphone, so that I can admire it. OTOH I am hoping my iphone 3g is not obsolete tomorrow...
- Alpay Erturkmen
By the way, both Mike Arrington and my iPhones have tons of cracks on the screen in a very similar pattern. I wonder what that means?
- Robert Scoble
damn too costly. damn too costly. damn too costly. damn too costly. damn too costly. damn too costly. damn too costly. damn too costly. damn too costly. damn too costly. damn too costly. damn too costly. damn too costly. damn too costly. damn too costly. damn too costly. damn too costly. damn too costly. damn too costly. damn too costly. damn too costly. damn too costly. damn too...

- Yuvi
Yuvi: Apple's always been that way yet I keep going to the Apple store and handing over my cash.
- Robert Scoble
I had this problem when I ran a internet retailer out of my house. I'd get orders from England and such but the tarriff would be as much or more than the order
- Stephen Pickering
Also, an iPhone even with a contract is INR 32,000 - which is around 700$. That sucks.
- Yuvi
Stephen: NO. I'd gladly fork over 200$, even 300$ for an iPhone, even with a contract! BUT NO SIR, YOU ARE NOT GETTING ONE! iPhones are for the RIIIICCH!
- Yuvi
Yeah but you know how much our monthly service is here? $120 per month
- Stephen Pickering
Tomorrow is gonna be amazing...just wait and see. I've already said too much ;)
- Andru Edwards
Andru: you suck. Now send me a DM about what's coming in the morning.
- Robert Scoble
In Russia they pay about $12 per month for cell phone service and yet one of the companies I'm invested in Vimpel makes as good or better margins than US carriers. How is that?
- Stephen Pickering
Stephen: So basically you're getting ripped off by the Telcos, while we're getting ripped off by Apple :) I spend about 6$ a month, for about 30 hours of talktime and 750 free outgoing messages a day :)
- Yuvi
Yeah, that's my point, and yet I bet the carriers in India make the same amount of money as ours
- Stephen Pickering
Just seen a post by Leo Laporte, went something like; Pre, Pre, Pre, Pre,Pre, Pre,Pre, Pre, Pre, Pre, Pre, Pre,Pre, Pre,Pre, Pre, Pre, Pre, Pre, Pre,Pre, Pre,Pre, Pre, Pre, Pre, Pre, Pre,Pre, Pre,Pre, Pre, Pre, Pre, Pre, Pre,Pre, Pre,Pre, Pre, Pre, Pre, Pre, Pre,Pre, Pre,Pre, Pre - - - - - - Just kidding, we all love Leo!! :)
- Jim Connolly
Tyler, actually more like $8 USD, and as Yuvi just said in India he only pays 6 USD!
- Stephen Pickering
tech news-- the post i saw had more cuss words in it ;)
- Tyler Gillies
Why is service in the US so much more expensive, the real estate for towers?
- Stephen Pickering
stephen -- because they know we'll pay
- Tyler Gillies
And I'm kinda 'higher end' :P A few of my friends spend about 1-2$ a month, and still get those free texts :)
- Yuvi
i actually didn't think 120 a month was very high heh. now im shocked
- Tyler Gillies
Cell phone service used to be very costly - around 20 bucks a minute (that'd be 50 cents) when it first came on in - ten years ago. Then Reliance happened, everyone got a mobile :)
- Yuvi
I only found this out when I invested in a Russian carrier
- Stephen Pickering
Now, for 3$ a month, I can call other Vodafone numbers for 10paise (that'd be, 0.20 cents NOT 20 cents), and other numbers for 49paise (that's around 1 cent). Not bad at all :)
- Yuvi
Let's hope for the release of Snow Leopard and Apple OS 3.0!
- Peter Kruit
So, how much do americans pay for mobile service?
- Yuvi
How much is 1 rupee worth. I just watched Slumdog
- Stephen Pickering
Yuvi: this is why Android is so interesting. I think long term that Android is going to be how most people get a cell phone with the power of an iPhone.
- Robert Scoble
GPL. GPL. GPL. GPL. GPL. GPL. GPL. GPL. GPL. GPL. GPL. GPL. GPL. GPL. GPL.
- A. T.
@Scoble: You know when Android would reach critical mass? When the cheap knockoff Chinese mobile makers embrace it.
- Yuvi
All the time because its my only phone. But my plan only allows 900 minutes, but you get free weekends and after work hours. I think I average 1000 minutes a month
- Stephen Pickering
Yuvi: I hear there are 12 Android phones shipping this year. It's only a matter of time.
- Robert Scoble
hope the new iphone has a macro lens
- Tyler Gillies
Christopher: did you see the Android phones that were handed out at Google's I/O conference? They are very nice. I think they passed Nokia and Microsoft with that effort and have Palm and Apple in sight.
- Robert Scoble
I wonder what Bono will do to McNamee if the Palm thing doesn't work out
- Stephen Pickering
Christopher: I'm not sure! A Chinese phone with a very big screen sells for around 90-100$. The only reason they're not as popular as Sony Ericsson and Nokia is the shitty software on them. If they have Android, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. So would millions of people here.
- Yuvi
Yuvi: since Android is open source and free to put on phones I expect the Chinese will catch on within months. Especially since Android is getting better and better and selling better and better too.
- Robert Scoble
Scoble,Yuvi: Chinese sets which come to India are without IMEI number which means, they are ILLEGAL
- Manish Sinha
Not Lenovo. Nameless factories that churn out mobiles, Christopher. Some have pirated copies of WiMo, and most have some shitty homemade OS.
- Yuvi
@Manish: A friend of mine just bought one two weeks ago. My uncle uses one. Pop on any train, and you'll find a lot of people using these. I'm not too sure about illegality - I think they might've now gotten IMEI numbers.
- Yuvi
Yuvi: Some of my friends too use it. Indian Govt has asked all Telecom Operator to block mobiles without IMEI number but the telecos are reluctant. I large number of people still do use phones without IMEI number, so telecos will lose a lot of customers.
- Manish Sinha
Also, an iPhone or Pre would be *very* vulnerable to theft. Some jackass stole my SE phone a week ago, an iPhone or Pre would be much more valuble targets!
- Yuvi
yuvi -- my iphone never leaves my body and i wear pants with deep pockets on purpose ;)
- Tyler Gillies
So Robert, will you be going down to the Apple store this time in case something is released?
- Jesse Stay
Jesse: nope. Although I have my Prius all ready. Heh.
- Robert Scoble
i want safari4linux from Apple. Please, Robert say them "the penguin wants apple very much!"
- Hüseyin Mert
Mert: Fat chance :) They won't even release a non-sucky passable iTunes for Windows...
- Yuvi
Robert, same here - I think I'll just be ready to dart if it looks like something's going to sell worth getting. It sure would be nice if the Apple stores could have custom feeds straight from Apple during the Keynotes. I think they'd get a lot more business around that time if they did.
- Jesse Stay
Christopher: have you tried official release or chromium. Both sucks. So, why apple ignore linux? this would be the question.
- Hüseyin Mert
Same reason almost every other corp. in the world ignores Linux (on the desktop)
- Yuvi
linux on the desktop is just lame. server cool. desktop fail. end of story
- Tyler Gillies
+1 Tyler. And I'm sayin that from an Ubuntu box
- Yuvi
mint isn't"built" from ubuntu. it IS ubuntu
- Tyler Gillies
and its not the "polish" that makes it fail. its the design, it was created as a server OS
- Tyler Gillies
Christopher I downloaded Windows 7 on a Sun Virtual Box. Is there anyway I can make it fill up the whole screen or can I only do that with boot camp?
- Stephen Pickering
isn't virtualbox a piece of software?
- Tyler Gillies
Yeah, I haven't played with it because it just sits there in its little box. No fun. But Leo Laporte was saying that Virtual had come so far that there was hardly any difference
- Stephen Pickering
i installed windows xp in virtualbox from linux on a gateway because that was the only way i could get the drivers to work without the oem install cd
- Tyler Gillies
I had Vista for a while on this Imac, but then it stopped working because it was a 350 dollar Home edition I bought for my Parents and licensed for only one machine! Oh that made me so mad
- Stephen Pickering
I mean Vista Boot camped until it wouldn't let me log in anymore
- Stephen Pickering
And yes, it was beautiful, so I can imagine what Win 7 woudl look like, now I'm drooling, must boot camp. Think I'll do that now, as it looks like no sleep tonight
- Stephen Pickering
here in the netherlands, they don't even sell movies yet or tv shows, or you can't rent movies either... so that sux, no blu ray support.. As far as i know, macs with vlc or perian can play ts mpeg streams.... thats not the issue
- Sebastiaan van den Akker
Watching a YouTube vid goes like this - click on play, click on pause, wait for it to download (at approximately 1s/s, so for a 8 min vid, I'd have to wait 8 mins), then watch :(
- Yuvi
Well, there're two new providers offering 1.5mbps
- Yuvi
In all fairness, there are 16Mbps connections available for Residential users now in India. The problem is they are fixed data limit (20 GB) and fairly expensive (~$60/mo). And 3G EVDO Data Cards with 3.1 Mbps are available as well but again, expensive ~$13/mo for 1GB, ~$25/mo for 10 GB.
- Parth Awasthi
It's not because I'll use those 10GBs in a week at most and then I'll pay $4/GB. In three more weeks, I'll be running a huge bill.
- Parth Awasthi
Wired broadband connections are all DSL or Cable. FTTH is non-existent.
- Parth Awasthi
250GB per month at a monthly price? I was earlier at 256Kbps to 2Mbps 1GB/monthly cap at $5/month. Now shifted to 256Kbps constant uncapped at $15/month.
- Manish Sinha
Yuvi: Airtel is providing 16MBps for home, but it was a joke. 20GB cap on 16Mbps line is a joke. Even if you bit mistake hit download and it gets download before you can cancel, then you have wasted a lot from your allowed cake.
- Manish Sinha
Parth: Those 3.1Mbps data cards is a joke. I never got more than 350Kbps ever. To add insult to injury TataIndicom projected in their ads... "3.1Mbps data cards 10GB unlimited"...WTF is "10GB unlimited"???
- Manish Sinha
Manish, the speeds one gets on EVDO are very highly correlated to the signal strength. I have used BSNL EVDO and I consistently got upwards of 1Mbps.
