SYTYCD!

How much do we love this show?! Discuss!
Jason Huebel
So I'm totally bored with SYTYCD right now. Two weeks of Top 20 performances and we haven't been allowed to vote yet. So we'll be at the Top 16 before we get a chance to vote. Not that I'm particularly impressed by most of the dancers.
Russell is the only dancer I really care much for. He's a natural, considering he's had no formal training. And his enthusiasm is infectious. Other than him... meh. - Jason Huebel
I love Russell. He's definitely a standout in the competition - Tamara
Is it a season with no star personalities????? - Pokai
No voting yet? I haven't had a chance to watch this week's. What was the reason this time? - Amber, Random Time Lord
World Series, supposedly. - Jason Huebel from IM
I don't know, I was pleasantly surprised by Legacy (who I thought was going to suck beyond belief) and I think cutie Mollee is showing she's not just all giggle. I agree that Russell is awesome, but I'm not discounting all the rest. - Shannon Jiménez
@Shannon, Mollee is improving and maturing quickly. I'm still not sold on her, though. Legacy just annoys me because, well, he's named "Legacy". He did dance well, though. - Jason Huebel
He annoys me because he is arrogant enough to insist that they call him Legacy and not his real name. - Amber, Random Time Lord

Maybe having the judges find the candidates during last season hampered their abilities to find good dancers......3 Tap guys/gal in top 20??????
ok, i admit being a little wishy washy here. there may be a couple with potential, which is usually the norm for sytycd. - Pokai

For dancing fans, I just saw Michael Jackson's movie "This is it" It is pure genius. His dancing....his moves. You have to see it on the big screen!
Jason Huebel
Just getting a chance to see last night's show/elimination. WTF?! Russell had to dance for his life? If he got cut, I won't watch this season. Seriously. (I'm about to watch them dance for their lives now.)
Relieved to see that Russell was not cut. The other little dude who was brought in as a replacement the day before the show, then was cut got a really bad deal. Since he's been in the top 20, he isn't technically eligible for the show again. But it sounds like Nygel will do him right and get an exception for him. - Jason Huebel
I think that was bull. She could have danced with the choreographer assistant and them not gotten that guys hopes up just to let him go the next day (literally). - Amber, Random Time Lord
Can't argue Amber. I think they really did a HUGE disservice to that kid. They brought him in, he killed himself to be ready for the show the next day, then they cut him. And to matters worse, the judges cut him-- not the public. So he was basically just a sacrificial lamb so they wouldn't have to cut one of the other male dancers. - Jason Huebel

Amber, Random Time Lord
This whole season has been shrouded in meh. Even on the first show it was the top 17 and some wildcards. I don't understand why they just didn't have the one girl dance with the choreographer instead of bringing in the one dude like a tease (which might have screwed him out of being able to come back and he only had a day to get the dance down).
I think there's a lot of talent this season and have high hopes, but I seriously disagreed with the judges on singling out Russell instead of Kevin (who looked stiff during the whole chacha) and basically making Brandon fly across the country for nothing. Also, Legacy seriously lucked out getting hiphop for his first dance. I think he's going to be as one-note as Philip was. - Shannon Jiménez
I think they just wanted to see Russell do a solo, but Kevin did look like utter crap up there. Plus I think they did that since the last few times someone was injured like that, there partner automatically had to do a solo anyway. - Amber, Random Time Lord

Did anyone else know that Chelsie Hightower is now on Dancing with the Stars? She is still just as annoying, but good for her. ABC.com - Dancing With The Stars - Bios
"Chelsie Hightower Celebrity Partner: Louie Vito Style: Latin and Ballroom Nationality: American Did You Know? Performed with singer Jewel in concert BACKGROUND: We're all pretty impressed that Chelsie has accomplished so much at such a young age. Do you realize that ever since she began competing at a high-level in ballroom, Chelsie has been in the finals and ranked as one of the top three couples in the country?! Not bad. Not bad at all. In 2006, Chelsie was a finalist on TV's So You Think You Can Dance where one judge said, "You move so well, you could make a mannequin look good." That's good news for some of the guys around here who look quite wooden whenever they try to bust a move. Chelsie has been helping other learn to dance since she was 15. She moved to North Carolina to teach and would fly to New York on weekends for lessons. She has been teaching at Center Stage in Utah where she's helped many students win national titles. She also teaches abroad. As busy as you are, Chelsie, we're so glad you found some time to do a little Dancing With The Stars!" - Rachel Lea Fox from Bookmarklet
This is her second or third season on DWTS. She's not all that annoying anymore, IMO. But she's not my favorite pro dancer. - Jason Huebel
Oh I don't know, I only saw one episode with here and she was throwing herself on her partner and giggling and acting all cute and flirty and fake and I found that very annoying. - Rachel Lea Fox
Well, she's the youngest pro on the show, so I give her some slack in that regard. She's a kid, really. - Jason Huebel
Jason, I think that is the problem. She is too young. She doesn't have the maturity to be on tv in a show not for teenagers. - Rachel Lea Fox

i really enjoyed the crumper from Boston audition....and, i'm starting to appreciate tyce's theatrics.
I love the crumper and that he is also trained in other styles!! I am excited to see if the makes the show. However I think Tyce is moody, inconsistent and annoying, but that is me. - Rachel Lea Fox
That guy was not only the best crumper I think I've seen, but the fact that he's trained in many other styles bodes well -- I hope he can carry it all the way. - Paul Wilcox
I really liked the crumper as well. I also thought Tyce was a complete asshole-- especially with the hip-hop guy who came back after two years who he gave all sorts of crap for not dancing contemporary. WTF? Hip-hop is his style! Vegas is where people show how flexible they are, style-wise, not in the audition. And did anyone else not see what made them send the guy in the plaid pants... more... - Shannon Jiménez
Don't get why the plaid guy went thru either. The hip hop guy was kind of mediocre. - Amber, Random Time Lord
I agree Shannon. and it was very inconsistent and hypocritical. He didn't give the break dancer or the crumper any lip for not showing the other styles they were trained in. It was just that the poor hip hopper came at the end of one of his sugar lows (guessing) where he was getting on everyone's case for anything and so he got on his case too. It was stupid! The crumper studied ballet,... more... - Rachel Lea Fox
I thought the plaid guy was good, but I expected him to go to choreography. - Rachel Lea Fox
Agreed. The plaid guy was alright, but didn't seem to have strong training, just a really interesting solo. The hip hop guy was decent, but Tyce just went nuts on him for no good reason. I think that's why Nigel stared Tyce down and said that he should at least go to choreo. Personally, I think the ice cream girl didn't even need to go to choreo, but I'm happy she still made it to Vegas. - Keith Bourgoin
Re: plaid guy, I think I've noticed a trend where the first dancer is either awful or gets sent to Vegas. I'm guessing they want to start the show with either a happy story or something horrific, which may help keep casual channel-flipping viewers watching the show. Since plaid guy wasn't terrible (maybe the Assistant Producer who pulled him out of the line for interviews and to go first guessed he'd totally suck?) so he got a Vegas ticket. I bet he'll get cut there. - Paul Wilcox
Tyce seems to think that being an asshole is the way to seem more important. He's a pretty shallow, self-important person. - Kevin Fox
I <3 you guys. Tyce is rude, annoying and self-absorbed. As for the krumper, I think he's one of my favorite dancers. I always love an underdog with no training but obvious natural talent. Just like Joshua from a couple seasons ago. - Jason Huebel

lil c, mia michaels, tyce will not be sitting on judges panel, because adam shankman is now resident judge. however, paula abdul will probably pop in. - Pokai from Bookmarklet
Tyce really kind of annoys me, to be honest. I love his choreography, but I really don't like him. I like everything about Adam Shankman, though. He's awesome. - Jason Huebel
You're right Jason. Adam is such a nice guy and has really good criticisms. I can do without Paula Abdul popping in. She's such a spaz. And we've already got one spaz on the panel. - Jill is sugar free
And I couldn't care less about Paula Abdul. We already have Mary, who is the entertainment from the judges. And we have Lil C, who comes up with these convoluted explanations of what he thought of a dancer. So we don't need any more entertainment or useless commentary from the judges at this point. - Jason Huebel
+1 Jill, "spaz" is a great word for her. - Jason Huebel
Shannon Jiménez
Someone needs to teach Adam Shankman how to whisper if he must comment while the person is dancing. Also, why do they have to cut to the judges' reactions so much, rather than just showing the dancer? It's jarring and I want to see the dancing, not the judges. /vent
Agreed. I think hearing the judges comments while remaining focused on the dancer would be much better. - Jason Huebel

Great to finally get some actual dancing! Can't wait till tomorrow, though it's a weird twist that they're going to eliminate two people without audience input.
They're not eliminating anyone tomorrow. Tonight was a 'free show' not a competitive round. Next show they compete and we vote, then the elimination show, and so forth. I think they just wanted to give people a chance to see dancers in their best genre. - Kevin Fox
At the end of the show Kat said two people would be eliminated tonight. - Shannon Jiménez
I think Shannon's right. This is an initial cut before the audience gets to begin voting. I kind of feel like that's a bad move on SYTYCD's part. But whatever. As long as they don't cut some of my favorites, I won't complain. - Jason Huebel

I actually missed the live airing of SYTYCD last night. I checked Yahoo TV for the time it was coming on-- which it said 8pm. It actually came on at 7pm. Time zone FAIL. :-(
So there were some highlights and some low points of the season premiere. They really hyped the young blond girl who moved to LA with her mom and brother. Although she does have potential, I don't think her dancing was as spectacular as the judges did. - Jason Huebel
The guy who brought up his Broadway characters gender identity thesis - that was some'n. :) - Micah Wittman

So how late do I have to wait again until I can start critiquing the dancers? It's almost 9 on the West coast. So what, another hour or so?
Honestly, I think you should just stay out of this group until you've watched the show. :-P - Jason Huebel
Ok, it's off here now. Critique away. - Jeanine W.
So Jeanine is my favorite to win the competition. YES, Brandon is a better dancer technically. But Jeanine showed her personality so well this evening that I think America won't be able to help themselves and will vote like crazy for her. - Jason Huebel
I started out the season with Jeanine as a favorite, but Brandon has won me over. He is consistently fabulous. I always enjoy his dancing AND his dancing personality. - Jeanine W.
The judges were railroading Evan tonight. I do think he is the weakest of the bunch, but they made it a point to find fault with his dancing when-- in my opinion-- Kayla had MANY faults in her dancing tonight that they completely ignored. Kayla fell apart tonight. - Jason Huebel
Jeanine would definitely be my 2nd choice though. I was a little disappointed in Jeanine in the opening number though. - Jeanine W.
If anything is going to win it for him, the end of Brandon's solo tonight will. When he went down into that impossibly low stance (he wasn't in a split touching the floor), then popped back up out of it without pushing up with his hands... damn. - Jason Huebel
Yeah, that solo was crazy amazing. He had this whole long sequence of doing amazing moves without touching the floor with his hands. I wish he'd had more appealing music to do it to, though. - Jeanine W.
I voted for him ('cuz I'm 13 apparently), and didn't have any trouble getting through. That makes me worried that he's not getting enough votes. :-( - Jeanine W.
Actually, I typically hate Brandon's solos. Everything before the drop into that stance was gyrating, flipping, jumping nonsense. Oftentimes, Brandon doesn't seem to be listening to the music while he's dancing. It's the same problem I had with Ade. Flip, jump, flail arms and legs around super-fast... It didn't connect with the audience. - Jason Huebel
So, here's how I see things going down tomorrow: Evan is out first, putting him in 4th place. Kayla is out next, putting her in 3rd. Brandon and Jeanine are in the final two. Based on your comment about the phone lines being open for Brandon, I think Brandon will be 2nd place and Jeanine will win. They need a girl to win. - Jason Huebel
That sounds plausible. - Jeanine W.
I agree that Evan is the weakest, but the judges were overly harsh (the producers must have told them "Don't let Evan win!"). I love Kayla and thought she had strong points tonight, but agree that Brandon and Jeanine were the standouts. However, I liked Brandon's solo better last week-- this week was too spastic. Overall, I'll be happy with anyone but Evan winning, but I think he has a chance-- he's got a huge following. - Shannon Jiménez
Actually, it wouldn't bother me if Evan won. He /is/ good at his particular genre of dance. And he's just a nice guy overall. But I don't think it's likely. I could see his popularity pushing Kayla into 4th, though. - Jason Huebel from IM
I don't even think Evan is that good for his genre. Tonight I was noticing how poorly he uses his arms. He holds them in too tightly to his body, which ends up cutting his line and making him look even shorter. It showed up clearly in his montage at the end of tonight's show. - Jeanine W. from IM
You've also got the Nigel-factor. He praised Brandon and Jeanine at the end of the show. People will perceive that as them being safe. So votes will skew toward Evan and Kayla-- maybe. It's going to be interesting. - Jason Huebel
I've been waiting since yesterday for more people to have seen it. It's amazing how much comentary was cut and in some cases rearanged in the show. I disagree on Brandon. One of the lines cut that Adam says, which I was saying as soon as Brandon's line was done, is that Brandon's solo was frantic. He didn't connect and I generally didn't like love it. It was fine, but not great.... more... - Rachel Lea Fox
That's a great word... "frantic". It's the same feeling I get every time he or Ade were doing solos. I just couldn't convince myself to like it. - Jason Huebel
There are those who would surprise me if they won, but I woudln't be upset at any of them winning. They all have their unique strengths that have been well addressed in this thread. Personally, I think Evan should take fourth, Brandon should take third, and that Kayla ought to narrowly beat out Jeanine for first place. In reality I think either Jeanine or Kayla will win (probably Jeanine). - Kevin Fox
From a home-audience perspective (yes, I'm a little jealous), Kayla didn't really shine tonight. She paled in comparison to Jeanine. Yes, we're supposed to take into consideration previous performances, but let's be honest.. Americans have a short attention span. And that may cost Kayla. I also think the personality-factor comes into play. Kayla isn't as likable as Jeanine. That's a BIG deal in a show that's just as much about popularity as it is technical ability. - Jason Huebel
Jeanine has really grown on me. When she was with Philip, I just couldn't see it but then she had Travis' choreo and I was like "wow." She has been consistently amazing, she was FANTASTIC last night (I thought her solo was the best of the night) and I love her personality. She seems smart and funny and she really performs. - Lis Miller
Personally, I felt that Brandon's solo was frenetic and desperate. Last week's solo was unbelievable but this week seemed too full of tricks. I finally appreciated Kayla last night. I don't know if it was the big stage or what and I know that she wasn't nearly perfect, but, like Nigel said, she showed her personality (finally). Evan shouldn't win. I like him as a person, but he is NOT the best dancer. - Lis Miller
Guess we'll find out in a few hours. YAY for East Coast broadcasts! ;-) I /might/ be persuaded to UStream the East coast show for West coasters to watch... (cancel that, I forgot my TV card doesn't work properly in Windows 7) - Jason Huebel
I agree with most of what you said, Lis. Except maybe about Kayla. I'm not a Kayla fan. She's a great dancer, but on a personal level she just doesn't measure up to Jeanine. - Jason Huebel
I appreciate Kayla as a wonderful dancer, I just keep forgetting she is there. Actually been doing that the entire time. I agree with Jeanine W. about Evan, if he wins it would just turn this show into Idol. I would peg Brandon for it, but I just thoroughly enjoy watching Jeanine dance (that might have little to do with ability and more with appreciation of her looks, but I'm sure I'm not the only one in that camp) - Amber, Random Time Lord
Jeanine is a little cutie. But I like her more for the bubbly, smiling personality she has. It's obvious that she's a hard worker, but has fun doing that work. Also, it didn't hurt her chances that she was bursting into tears and nuzzle into Cat in embarrassment every time the audience cheered for her or the judges mentioned that she's piquing at the perfect time. - Jason Huebel
Lis, the stage wasn't that big... i don't know how the other stage was, but that theatre is no where near as big as they make it look. We were commenting that we thought the stage was smaller than the studio stage and then the judges started talking about how big the stage was and I don't know if they were just doing that because they knew the wide angle lens on the camera would make... more... - Rachel Lea Fox
Jeanine is a cutie, and really lovable, but she also has skill and is daring. That pirouette she did was not only incredibly skillful but also incredibly risky. She knew she had to go for it, and she did. Its impressive. Also I thought her solo was the most thought out as well. Not to mention that her duets with the boys were great as well. - Rachel Lea Fox
I'm not saying Jeanine doesn't deserve it, just that she could be crap, and I wouldn't care. - Amber, Random Time Lord
Yeah, you can't say enough about that pirouette. I thought, "okay, she's gonna spin a few times, maybe kick to get a few extra rotations and that's it." But nope. She kept going until she completely stopped. It was amazing. Total balance control. It's her killer move. - Jason Huebel
*lol* got it Amber. I'm somewhat surprised. I mean Jeanine is more beautiful in my head, but I thought more people would like Kayla. I mean those legs go on forever! - Rachel Lea Fox
But that's kind of my problem with Kayla. She's all legs and not much else. And I'm not just talking about her physical appearance. I'm also talking about her solos. It got old quickly. And the truth is, her solos didn't improve or change because of the wider dance experience she got from SYTYCD. Jeanine's did. She began incorporating a little hip hop, some ballroom, etc into her routines throughout the season. - Jason Huebel from IM
When I hear people describe Kayla as a hollow shell of talent I keep coming back to the addiction dance with Kupono. It was probably the best piece of the season: http://www.youtube.com/watch... - Kevin Fox
I'll grant you that. She's great technically and there was certainly a lot of emotion in that piece. But I think we transferred too much of that emotion from Kupono to her, when really Kupono was the one who was truly emotional because of the content of the routine. Putting that aside, she doesn't do well with her own choreography. It's all kicks and flailing arms with little emotional connection to the music. - Jason Huebel
I'm not saying Kayla is bad. Not by a long shot. But Jeanine is better-- well-rounded. - Jason Huebel
I disagree about Kupono. I think they both did amazing in that peace, but I really don't think Kupono really emotionally connected with most of his pieces. I'm not sure Kayla did either, but I do think that she got into them enough to show some emotion. Not as much as they both did in the addiction piece, and she truly could have given more, but I do think she connects with the piece. I generally didn't really like Kupono that much though and I thought hat Kayla carried him. - Rachel Lea Fox
I totally agree about Kupono. He wasn't as strong as Kayla, although they made a good couple. The judges really kept him around because he had an interesting look, I think. And his solos were usually pretty entertaining, even compared to some of the front-runners. - Jason Huebel from IM

Jandy & Lis & anyone else who has gone to a taping, how strict were they about not permitting cell phones? I understand not wanting people to take photos or video and get any information about the show out before the episode airs but we need to be able to call a taxi to get us to the airport in time for the last flight of the night and it will be tight. How did they deal with things when you went? - Rachel Lea Fox
Lis, do you remember? I think security had big bins outside the set for you to leave your cellphones, and then you picked them up when you left. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Glad you pointed this out Rachel. I've been doing some online research and it looks like they've got a system for you to check in your cell phones and pick them up after the taping. - Paul Wilcox
Paul, Sounds good. Do you think we can check in all cell phones under one name so only one person has to do that line? Course another line after the show and before we can call a cab will make it tighter for our flight. We may need to set up a taxi before the show. One that will meet us and wait for us or something. We should all chat tonight or something. - Rachel Lea Fox
Jandy, thanks so much!!! Any other info anyone has so we can be prepared would be great! Thanks all! - Rachel Lea Fox

Yes, it's all the same line, IIRC. You don't have to go someplace separate to drop off your phones, they just take them as you go through security. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Jandy - I don't think they took our phones (but I could be wrong - they also said no flipflops and I wore them anyway) but we weren't in the general line. And, yes it's all one big line. - Lis Miller
Jandy and Lis, but is it a different line while leaving to pick up your phone as opposed to just leaving, no phone needed? - Rachel Lea Fox
As I recall, they just had the tubs outside the door as you went out. You'd stop and pick yours up if you had one, but just keep going if you didn't. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Awesome! Thanks Jandy! - Rachel Lea Fox
Was there any kind of security or just "Hey, free iPhone!"? - Kevin Fox

I am so bloody glad that Jeanine won! This was the first year that I really REALLY had a favorite. I was so sure Evan would win and that would make me sad. The judges were right when they said Jeanine peaked at the right time. I would've been fine with Brandon winning, but I'm so glad a woman won. And she's an awesome dancer. Thoroughly deserved!
I voted for Kayla because I thought she was stronger on raw technical merit, but I'm very pleased that Jeanine won. She's an amazing dancer and has a great personality, both on and off stage. She also had a great narrative, as it's really true that she got better and better and, as has been said so many times, she really peaked at just the right time. I can't wait to see where she goes from here. - Kevin Fox
I agree. She was my second choice behind kayla. Jeanine showed a lot of personality throughout the season. - Pokai
She was actually my fourth choice from the Top 20. Then she just kept getting better, so I am content with the decision. - Amber, Random Time Lord
So I finally watched the last two episode just now, and successfully avoided getting spoiled. :) I'm pleased, too. I actually would've been happy with any of the top four except Evan winning (I like Evan, but he stopped impressing me as a dancer somewhere around week four). But I just found Jeanine so solid throughout and so personable, too. And she clearly loved every second of the experience. Well, maybe outside of the Russian folk dance. ;) - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
