“had an argument w/colleague, professor and now big Question for you: is Facebook online community or not? Wikipedia entry characterizes Facebook as online/virtual community. My professor argues that Facebook is not online community. geeesh . Your thoughts b4 I quit PhD?” - http://friendfeed.com/e...
Is the argument that it can't be community because it's virtual or because it lacks some essential element of prof's definition of community? - Tom Guarriello
the second she was arguing but then i replied her back, check out my home feed with comments, what i wrote. thanks - Danica Radovanovic
Maybe she is pissed at you because you did not friend her on Face Book? LOL - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
I think FB is only as much of a community as you would consider your own group of friends. There's not a whole lot of interconnectivity that goes on Facebook as it would in other "communities". The level of social interaction is possibly at a different level than what a sociologist might consider a community level. - Mattie Kenny
Communities have tribes. Face Book has tribes. The tribes which are nods make up the Social Media community - Face Book. Just share this link with your teacher. Social Network http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... But be careful she may block you! LMAO - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Danica - Facebook doesn't have tribes and I wouldn't suggest showing your prof a wikipedia article as proof. I know every time I do that it goes over GREAT! haha. I think the community aspect of Facebook is VERY limited and loose. Unlike something like FF or Twitter where community interaction and socialization is high. As in, you are not direct kin to me (in my list of friends) but I still socialize with you in a specific context (this room). - Mattie Kenny
