The social generation has a level of interest in what everyone else is doing right now that earlier generations don't share. When you have to explain that people use Facebook to keep up with what there friends are doing you can tell that you are dealing with some who lives in a world where the pace of communication is based on land line phones and mail

Instead of picking up the phone, to use a computer. Instead of just talking, you write to each other, show each other photos, videos, web pages and other cool stuff online. Instead of talking to just one of your friends you can talk to all of them, groups of them, or... one of them. Oh - and everyone under 20 is doing it like it's normal...

It's recreating some of the small-town closeness we've lost, where you bump into people all day long...as you work, shop, walk across town, go home, play sports, go to the movie theater. Continual little interactions all day long.

I start with the cocktail party metaphor. Think of a cocktail party held for work. Now imagine if geography didn't matter and anyone could be there. The best and brightest from around the world (or in the case of one's boss - your customers and clients) are talking and you're welcome to join in the discussion... If that fails to grab the imagination, I switch to 'imagine if anyone could be the publisher of their own newspaper, if anyone could have their own radio station or their own tv studio.'
