Finally, some pro snow people speaking up on FF. Snow rules; snowboarding just isn't the same without it!
- Eivind
I love the four seasons Sarah, each has its beauty and unique characteristics. Most importantly, its fun to look forward to spring and new growth every year. I wouldn't live anywhere that I couldn't experience this.
- jcunwired
Please by all means, my gift to to, keep it :) -- We didn't have snow but the temp where I'm currently at was 9. I do not do well with the cold.
- H0llywoodWh0re
Look at it this way Barry. It's a good reason to snuggle in front of a roaring fire while drinking something hot and alcoholic.
- Junebug (aka Sarah Jill)
@jcunwired That sums up how I feel also. Right now I'm living in the moment that is winter. =D

I've discovered that over 70% of my media consumption (TV, music, movies, podcasts, audiobooks, etc) comes from TWIT, but it costs me much less relative to my bills from DirecTV, Netflix, etc. I've been a recurring contributor since the beginning, and will continue. My only fear is that I hope this doesn't lead to Leo trying to constantly please the audience....the vocal minority could ruin it.
- Larry
70% really? I listen to Tech, Windows, and Google, but that doesn't come close to what you do @Larry. You should step away from the podcast more often. lol.
- Randy Pollock
@Randy, I listen to 10 of the TWIT shows on a regular basis, and only watch about 1 or 2 hours of TV a day at most. I have plenty of time to listen to podcasts throughout the day, but not much time to watch television or movies.
- Larry
when i heard you propose this on the live feed the other day i was thinking 'great idea' -- glad to see you've made the decision and went for it
- Chris Heath
I hope you talked to your wife before doing this.
- Chris Strange
This is just another reason why I love Leo and will continue to contribute.
- Kimmie
Twit allowed me to get rid of cable all together. I don't have a TV at all. Twit provides enough steady quality streams so I get all my media from the internet. Without Twit, I'd probably pay for cable again (boooo!) I started the MMR! (minor media revolution=no cable/satellite/antenna, all media from the internet) Viva la MMR!
- echostreamer
Leo, will get to the tip jar tomorrow. Thanks for the shows.
- Keith Murray
from BuddyFeed
good article shen... i'll 'submit' it for twit on delicious by using the for:twit tag so leo might see it
- Chris Heath
but it doesn't really come to any conclusions... i want to hear jason calacanis' thoughts on this story
- Chris Heath
I Love TWiT and Leo - But, after reading his post I have no idea what this will change or even why he's changed it.
- Jim Connolly
Jim... all that's changing is how Leo does his accounting and pays himself. Previously he was paying for fixed costs like severs with the donation money. Now the donation money is his TWiT salary. I guess it simplifies the 'how much should I pay myself' question and also is a kind of measuring stick for success. I'm not sure why the blog post didn't explain enough to you. Do you still have questions?
- Chris Heath
Seems like a publicity gimmick to me. And after throwing Pournelle under the bus, you can forget any donation.
- Fnord
Fnord... You can disagree with someone and still remain great friends with them... We are all more than one dimension.
- Johnny Worthington
how was Pournelle thrown under a bus? what happened? or is Fnord just being contrary ?
- Chris Heath
Honestly I don't want to take anything away from TWIT, I have been watching Mr.Leo Laporte since 2001 and have loved everything you have done. That being said, Last year I cancelled my cable subscription to G4TV. Not because I did'nt enjot it but because I could DL the interesting parts as casts through MIRO. I also DL CNet, Revsion3 many adobe and photography cast not to mention all...

- CL1PS
I would be willing to pay a few bucks a year...but honestly, TWiT's quality and appeal depends greatly on the guests. Unless you can let users have a more direct say in your panel lineup and/or topics discussed, I don't think it's fair to expect anyone to pay $1-2 each month. I mean, most people probably only listen to TWiT so it's unfair to make it out like each listener will ever take...

Leo, I will pay you whatever you want if you keep Loudmouth Calacanis off your show.
- Fleagle
Donating for your salary is a no brainer ,I'm happy to keep it up
- Randy Nacol
I'll pay double what the Calacanis haters will pay you to keep him off if you get him on at least once a month!
- Chris Heath
Calacanis is a smart fella, strong opinion but smart try to listen to twist sometime
- alex
I've tried all I care to. There are tons of 'smart' people out there, many of whom are much more pleasant to listen to than that tool.
- Fleagle
Well... that's just... like... your opinion... man
- Chris Heath
I'm on the same page as Scott, TWiT relies too heavily on Technolebrity personalities who for the most part really have only marginal knowledge of the matters at hand & b/c of time constraints can not explore the topics at hand. Forums and interaction are lacking, for they lay person, yes I'm sure it's interesting, but for a more precise knowledge of technology, the internet and answers...

I've been carefully watching Joshua for a long time. He's the baby of the family and is way smarter than me, so there might have been some jealousy involved, even back when he was a baby. But maybe I was just making sure he was OK.....but from the look on my face, it's probably the jealousy thing....But I love him....And he IS heavy....hee hee
ok, you and your sister win. pretty darn cute I must admit. But Josh and I can take you in a Buffalo Wing eating contest.

find ME a dance floor WITH a pole... and then we'll see who's eyes fall out.

Oh shit...if that's the case I want a blindfold. I respect my vision too much to view that!

ok, now it's personal. Now we will re-create the Chris Farley / Patrick Swayze Chippendale's skit!!!! That will burn through any blindfold!

Josh has tons. I have a limited supply in digital format here at work, but can bring some tomorrow for your perusing.

Who's the third Haley sibling & are they on FriendFeed?

That's Bill Haley and he's next predicted to make an appearance in 2061.
- Spidra Webster
It's our older brother Sean. I don't think he's on here, but he should be! He's 2.5 years older than me and Josh is 4 years younger. Yes, I am a middle child. And I'm a Leo. Can you tell?

That's NUTS Alex, #donotwant "Google Takes Over – Search on Their Terms, Not Yours" #1 is especially egregious in getting accurate search results via @alexschleber - http://level343.com/article...
"Two big things have hit the search engine streets from Google’s front door that may change the history of how we get our search results forever – and that’s not an exaggeration. Change #1: It was December 4th, 2009, at precisely 3:01 PM. The day had been going nicely, optimizers going about the business of getting clients into the top rankings. It was peaceful, it was quiet; it was a normal business day. Until Google stepped in. “Hey you guys,” Google says, “I have this great idea. You remember personalized search?” Everybody allowed as how, yes they had heard of personalized search and, as a matter of fact, some used it themselves. “Well,” says Google with a grin, “today, we’re announcing the extension of personalized search. We’re not just going to give it to people that sign into their Google account. Oh, no. From today on, whether you’re signed out, signed in, or even interested, you’re going to get personalized search.” Direct quote: “Previously, we only offered Personalized...

#Friendfeed Issues -- 1. Each time I post a update, it goes to my direct mail box (you/you) 2. I cannot comment 3. I cannot share 4. I cannot like. This problem has occurred three separate times, usually I reboot to fix it, I've rebooted 10 times; no luck. I have logged out and logged back in four times, no fix. Is this a known problem?
Additional information -- I am accessing the Internet using the newest version of Firefox, Firefox is my primary browser for personal and business use. I can access Friendfeed with full funcationality, as I'm doing now via Flock. I can also access, with full functionality using IE. Thus, it seems to be a browser specific problem. -- I know no one who has this issue, as a social media journalist I have inquired with at least 50 other Friendfeed users who use Firefox as a primary browser. -- In addition to the logging out and in and the 10 reboots this morning (it was working perfect prior) I did a restore, no luck with that either.
- H0llywoodWh0re
Following this issue I could not use FriendFeed on Firefox for three full days; but was using it through a Flock (Mozilla counterpart) without issue. I had a script extension called 'Greasemonkey' installed and when I disabled it Friendfeed started to function. Does anyone know if that could cause interference. -- I'm hoping this was my problem.
- H0llywoodWh0re
I had a similar issue months back with Firefox & a userscript: I would be asked to sign in continuously over & over again in at 30s intervals with it enabled, Golub pointed out it was a problem with a particular grease script, I tried the script with Chrome & the same problem occurred. It's most likely a grease script error.

So is that the new thing for female Hollywood celebs? Flirt with Ellen? That's fine if they actually mean it, but if they're just doing it for the publicity...
- Jason Huebel
And I'm referring to the little serenade that Jennifer Anniston gave her the other day.
- Jason Huebel
How is flirting with Ellen any different than flirting with Letterman? It's all for business and publicity right? It's all silly show business in my opinion and gender or sexual orientation of the host doesn't really play into it I think. The fact that two women can flirt on daytime TV is pretty cool though.
- pea
Dont like Ellen but do have a soft spot for Jennifer Love Hewitt.
- Robert Bland
True enough, pea. I have no problem with two women flirting, but you have to admit that same-gender flirting adds an element of provocativeness to the act (not saying it should, mind you). So it just irks me a little that Hollywood exploits that fact. I disapprove of the context in which they're flirting, not the flirting itself.
- Jason Huebel
What's up with the cut of that dress? It looks like it's cut longer in the front like maternity wear...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
@Jason, I suppose it does though we won't get to a point where two women flirting won't be provocotive until it's mainstream and, though we like to rail against it, celebrities often serve to make something mainstream just by the sheer fact that they can draw a crowd. I've always been an equal opportunity flirter so seeing Jennifer flirt with Ellen doesn't even make me blink. But I do...

Facebook Privacy Changes Go Live; Beware of "Everyone" - glitches abound, ADVICE: remove personal info you don't want EVERYONE to know - http://www.pcworld.com/busines...
"As promised, Facebook has begun rolling out new privacy options to its 350 million users.Watch out for the "Everyone" setting. On Wednesday morning, users began seeing a message offering a new, simplified privacy settings page and the ability to set specific options for every post made to Facebook. The changes, first announced this summer, again promised last week, and available today, give users much tighter control of who sees what, down to the individual reader, if desired. Especially important is the new "everyone" setting that determines whether a Facebook post will be seen on other services, such as in Google search results. Other settings include "only friends" and "friends of friends." A "customize" option allows users to show or hide a post from specific individuals or user-created lists. The options are available by clicking on a new "lock" icon that appears next to the "share" button when a Facebook user updates their status. Any setting may be chosen as a default and the...

The special effects are terrible and the story is all angsty, but despite all that I enjoyed it.

I refuse to watch ANY of these movies because they try to pretend there is all this supernatural battle action in the trailers when it's really just some chick flick crap. Don't get me wrong, I'll watch a good chick flick, but don't try to trick me. That's just wrong.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
I did, too. I'm mostly unapologetic for my enjoyment of Twilight.
- joey
The movies have been faithful to the books, so I can't complain. There are a few little changes, but nothing significant.
- Jason Huebel
Are the books easy/quick reads? I need to check them out, just to see.
- Joe Pierce
They're light reading, IMO. The first book was good. The second book kinda dragged on a little (until the end). The third book was good and the fourth book was probably my favorite. The Twilight series is a young adult series, so read them with that understanding.
- Jason Huebel
If you decide you like the Twilight books, you should also read Stephanie Meyer's adult sci-fi novel called The Host.
- Jason Huebel
Jason, I knew I was not wrong in high esteem of you. Now even if you start wearing Twilight t-shirts and sprinkling super fine glitter on yourself on sunny days... nothing can sway me. I still agree with all your comments here. Now go put your pants on!

Wondering if we really need to see these tweets in real time on Google search results.... the quality of these tweets seems to be very low. Maybe Google should be filtering tweets.. Not sure how this is useful at all to someone searching Google for "Tiger Woods"
I think this will only increase twitter spam :(( Google is usually very very religious about their search result quality... not sure how this got through...
- Bindu Reddy
Exactly, the more you tweet, the better your chances are for a site hit
- sofarsoShawn
interesting. didn't even realize there's these kinds of google search results now. thanks for the heads up!

from iPod
It's good to bring more users to twitter though, as they keep getting twitter rubbed into their face. That being said I should try that search.
- Richard A.
Interesting. So you can try spam these services, and get a high position on Google immediately. But filtering... based on what? The usual filters work on authority which in turn often works on ratings, citations, backlinks etc., and these won't be real-time because people first have to see and digest the message in question in order to link, cite and rate it.
- Philipp Lenssen
It auto-updates and that is an interesting feature. That's something I could see some use for :-)
- Richard A.
On the spam and SEO topic. Don't you think it'd measure retweet strength. If a lot of people retweet a subject then the link would be more relevant/interesting than if just one person retweets. Sorry for going slightly off topic. As an aside do retweets move back up to the top of the search? Should try cop15 and see how it behaves.
- Richard A.
@Philipp: smart question (as usual). I guess that Google's rank/filter could be based not on the tweet, but on the tweeter: e.g. someone who has many followers is a good source, etc. E.g. Google too should (in this case) change its paradigm, switching from a "web of pages" to a "web of people".
- milivella
Google needs real time spam/foul language filter.

from iPhone
@Philipp You have nailed the issue :) It is really really difficult to get a good grip on "quality" if the information/data is real-time. I still can't really figure out what the motivation behind doing something like this on the Google main search results is.
- Bindu Reddy
Sometimes it is nice to see people giving their reactions to news or event in real time but I hope it improves overtime.

Am I the only one here who is using Topsy http://www.topsy.com on a daily basis to cut through Twitter noise? Works like a charm. News recommender systems are the Next Big Thing.
- Sean McBride
Sean, I'm on twitter for the conversations :-). I looked at topsy and I'll have to play with it, see how I could have fun with it.
- Richard A.
Richard A. -- I use Friendfeed for conversations (much more capable for that activity than Twitter, in my opinion). And I use Topsy to identify and grab the most important news on specialized topics flowing through Twitter. To each his or her own.

I think I'm the only person in the world who wants my salad dressing ON the salad when I get it... And have just been made aware that there may be other contexts for this phrase that do not involve the innocent eating of a healthy lunch...
- Lindsay
Ah. No, you're not the only person in the world.
- Spidra Webster
I actually like mine tossed, too, Lindsey, to be perfectly honest. You just can't goop say, Caesar dressing on top of the hearts of romaine. THEY NEED TO BE MIXED UP GOOD.
- Derrick
No kidding! People always look at me funny when I get the salad from the fast food place and put the dressing on it, close it back up and shake away... but dang it, I want full-coverage!
- Lindsay
This thread just keeps getting better.
- Alex Scoble
It takes me 15 minutes to start eating in a "sit-down" restaurant because I have to evenly distribute the dressing without the benefit of a closed container, while also keeping it from coming off the plate/bowl onto the table, and getting all the greens at the bottom turned over so they get some dressing too... Much nicer if they'd just toss it for me before bringing it out!! What's the deal with this "on the side" business??
- Lindsay
And now I'm hungry for Olive Garden.
- Alex Scoble
I want a salad now, and I want it tossed. I realize this has greater implications coming from me, but I ain't scared of none of y'all. *teams up with Lindsay*
- Derrick
Oh and people have gotten it in to their heads that "on the side" is healthier because you use less dressing.
- Alex Scoble
Who uses less dressing? They just pour the whole cup on anyway!! LOL!
- Lindsay
Oh D, as though we ever thought you weren't a fan of having your salad tossed. *eyeroll*

That's an interesting method, Bren. I've seen (and tried) dunking bites of salad into the cup but never dipping my fork... Never would have thought of that...

"Who Says" is probably the only standout track that comes to mind. Even the one with Taylor Swift just seemed tacked on (her appearance.) I actually have very high hopes for solutions like Salmon (http://www.salmon-protocol.org/) to bring us back to the best of both worlds. Rich, detailed posts with topical comments on the original site, intermixed seamlessly with the discussions taking place on aggregators like FriendFeed and Facebook. It's possible -- we just need a little bit of tech to make it happen.
- DeWitt Clinton
Me too - I miss those days, and I worry Twitter has distracted us
- Jesse Stay
Some of my best relationships have been built by commenting on others' blogs - it still works even today, but now I guess it's more a secret than it was before.
- Jesse Stay
I'm hoping for a return to the usenet days, where I could follow a conservation from one client. Conservation is so fragmented since the blog era. Hopefully, this upstreaming of comments will allow a more integrated view and lower the probability of fragmentation.
- Ray Cromwell
Part of the problem is people simply taking less time to comment. There's a - relative - abundance of good content. Finding a good article is less special nowadays than it was some years ago. Less reason for a reader to engage with one specific author. There are other strong posts waiting for him in his reader, FriendFeed or Twitter stream.
- Meryn Stol
Imagine a world where people could follow blogs wherever the like (Reader, FriendFeed, on the original site, whatever) and all the comments made in each place would swim upstream and back out to where people were reading. We're super close. Would love to have FriendFeed be an early adopter of this.
- DeWitt Clinton
I think FriendFeed in part countervails that problem by making commenting so easy, and by "nudging" towards short comments, more intuitive responses. I think the old days of thoughtful responses in the comment section are not coming back. A true thoughtful response can be made into a blog post by itself.
- Meryn Stol
I need to bring mine back. Almost a year gone by with no posts. I just got frustrated with my blogging software around the same time Twitter took off. But every time I tweet a little piece of me dies. I need to fix that.
- DeWitt Clinton
My main point is that I think new technology, better integration between blogs and aggregators and such can only do so much for us.
- Meryn Stol
A counterpoint, at least some new technology has brought more people together than ever before (plenty of examples right here).
- DeWitt Clinton
Oh I don't doubt that tech can bring us together, it's just that it's bringing us together in a different way than before. While twitter - imo - hurts thoughtful discussion, it has brought us "ambient intimacy". FriendFeed also have given rise to a new *kind* of conversation.
- Meryn Stol
The comments "swim upstream" idea is nice in theory, but there's the pesky problem of threading when a side conversation develops in one of the outposts. I suppose sticking with the @name convention helps a bit for sorting things out ...
- Laura Norvig
from iPod
I love the phrase "ambient intimacy", Meryn. But I partly disagree -- Twitter has brought us a Society of the Spectacle (in the Guy Debord sense). Nothing intimate about that.
- DeWitt Clinton
DeWitt, hmm allright, maybe I'm romanticizing Twitter somewhat. FYI: The term ambient intimacy was originally coined by Leisa Reichelt: http://www.disambiguity.com/ambient... - kind of must read essay I guess.
- Meryn Stol
I still have an active blog, but most comments seem to be coming from facebook.
- Piaw Na
No question it has changed. Salmon is a cool option, which I like a lot, but you can't undo the trend. Many folks believe that retweeting, bookmarking and Google Reader sharing is enough. I recognize I do this a lot, but I do try to participate in as many community conversations as there are, wherever they are.
- Louis Gray
Salmon will be a very valuable solution. By allowing people to add comments in the environment they feel most comfortable with (and propagating them) I think the depth of conversation can/will increase.
- Chris Myles

Morten Andersen 09/12/2009 20:50 As US President Barack Obama joins the high-level negotiations of the UN conference on climate change next week his domestic opposition will try to make its voice heard in Copenhagen. “I will not be one of the sycophants that say climate change is the biggest problem facing the world and we need to do all these draconian things that cost jobs,” Joe Barton, Republican and member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, says according to AFP. Chrome renders JavaScript 10 times faster than Opera 10.10 and almost twice as fast as Firefox 3.6 Beta 4, the most recently-released Mac version of Mozilla's open-source browser. But Chrome can't match Safari 4.0.4's speed: Apple's browser is approximately 12% faster than Google's beta. That's different than the situation on Windows, where Chrome has been billed as the fastest browser around. The last time Computerworld tested Chrome on Windows -- in September, with Chrome 3.0 -- Google's browser handily beat all rivals, including the second-place Safari. Computerworld ran the SunSpider JavaScript benchmark suite in Mac OS X 10.6 three times for each browser, then averaged the scores....

Wow, look at Opera. No wonder they're making such a big deal about Windows browser choice: no one would look twice at them otherwise! US football fans would recognize this graph as a C'MON MAN! ESPN MNF moment

We use both the Medela Breastmilk Bottle and the Dr. Brown's Natural Flow Bottle. I would recommend just buying one bottle and trying it out before you decide. Don't buy several because of the baby hates it, you don't want to have 3 or 5 of them to return!

we did try the Playtex VentAire and neither of our kids liked it cos of the bend.

My elder one is using Pigeon and BFree. Have tried Avent too... I actually like Pigeon bottles, but I want to differentiate the bottles (especially the nipples) between the brother and the sister.

Rochelle, there's no return policy over here, so I guess I better buy just one to try out initially. Thanks for advice.

hmmmm are you familiar with TittyCat? ~ oh wait no that's the other way around

BornFree here as well, and I really like that you can just buy sippy-cup nipples for them and you don't have to replace everything when you start "moving up" from regular nipples.

We used Doctor Brown's our daughter was collicky. These bottles helped.

We took Rochelle's suggestion and bought one of a few kinds. Penny by far liked the Dr. Browns best!

I'm late to the party, but our lactation consultant suggested the Breastflow as the baby's sucking motion mimics breastfeeding. Our little one likes it better than Dr Browns.

Late, but we use Dr. Browns. Little man seems to like them better than the VentAire.
