Google Layoffs - 10,000 Workers Affected
"Google has been quietly laying off staff and up to 10,000 jobs could be on the chopping block according to sources." - Anthony Farrior from Bookmarklet
ditto @jason kaneshiro - Lynne d Johnson
Wow - anna sauce
holy cow! - Susan Beebe
It's tough being Not Evil....Maybe "Nicely Rational" should be better - Anthony Farrior
While I'm not saying this isn't true, the article tweaks my questionable journalism sensor in two big ways - the first is in not naming the type of "sources" for the article (you don't need names, just a type of position - ie: mid-level management, investment broker, joe the homeless guy, etc.) and makes some pretty broad claims about employment practices w/o referencing the laws that govern some of those things (not hard to research). - Jennifer Dittrich
I wonder how many positions they could save if they sold one of their jets..? - Sprague D
But this won't be good for getting a Mac or Linux version of chrome out soon. - Wizetux
*winces* - Cheryl
I read an article last week about a company (Yahoo perhaps?) who claimed it was cutting 3,000 jobs when they were actually laying off 1600 employees and removing 1400 open job recs. Because of the way Google staffs they could have 10,000 open job recs that, if cut, could be portrayed as 'cutting 10,000 jobs'. - Kevin Fox
Hey Google, I got an idea. Why don't guys scale back on the free food budget. I'm sure people will appreciate their jobs more than a hot steak. - Bwana ☠
Seems rather unlikely. Also, Sprague, Google doesn't own any jets (that I know of at least). - Paul Buchheit
I think WebGuild and Google have a bit of a recent history. I think WG decided to run their own "Web 2.0" conference (separate from the one that Tim O'Reilly and crew run), which struck me as a bit... confusing. Shortly afterwards, Google decided to stop hosting WebGuild events, which prompted Daya Baran to post this item in April: http://bit.ly/jnYh . Googler Chris DiBona replied with http://bit.ly/1mNEKd . Post-April coverage on WebGuild such as http://bit.ly/PQpk has seemed a bit more negative to me. - Matt Cutts
"a bit more negative" looks like an understatement Matt :) - Paul Buchheit
I didn't want to come across as negative myself, Paul. :) It is interesting that WebGuild appeared to switch from the tag "goog" to "google" in the May/June-ish timeframe (around when Google stopped hosting WebGuild events). To my eye, the earlier WG coverage at http://www.webguild.org/tag... seems much more moderate than the more recent coverage at http://www.webguild.org/tag... - Matt Cutts
WebGuild is redefining "layoff" to apply to contractors. - Bruce Lewis from fftogo
The word "affected" is also misleading. Google has 10,000 contractors and is cutting some contractors, but that doesn't make them all "affected." Not to be too negative, the other three words in the headline seem accurate: Google, 10,000, workers. - Bruce Lewis from fftogo
Larry has nice feet. - Clare Dibble
Jeez, is this guy still around? I've discounted everything he's had to say since he wrote inaccurate things about me personally. (What, did he not think we'd read them?) Best just to ignore these things -- anyone can write anything on the internet... - DeWitt Clinton
that's bad... - Anthony Farrior
I'd be more concerned with the Jaundice setting in on Larry and Sergey's feet. - John Honeck
