yes I agree.. it's more the "get to know your neighbor" aspect of the event I like... not so much quality wines. The one's that Vines picks our are usually pretty good though, and if you hang around long enough you'll get a little wine lesson from Lee :)
- Chrissy Morin
LOL, yep. Lee was quite educational. I hung around to "learn" about both his red and white selections...
- Chris Kasten
This may be a dumb question, but I can't find an answer. Is there a way to copy an entire note other than highlighting all its text and copying into a new note?
I just realized that I can't negate the notebook arg in a search (like "tag:foo -notebook:archives"). Any clever workarounds? I fear I'm going to have to tag a thousand notes as "archives" now...
I am guessing, since I only use one notebook, that Evernote will allow you to use an exhaustive list of notebooks to search and exclude your archive notebook. For example, notebook:"abc" notebook:"efg" tag:foo
- Valley
@valley: I don't believe you can have more than one notebook in a search :( At least not int he Windows client.
- Greg Gannicott
Yeah, the API documentation confirms that you can't negate a notebook or specify more than one. I guess I haven't noticed that because of the way I use notebooks. :S
- Fa La La La Lindsay
I don't know if you've tried it, but Evernote for Windows works fine under WINE - worth a go if you prefer a desktop client to the web.
- Ian Betteridge
The Firefox web clipper works fine - I always just used that.
- Ian Betteridge
Okay. Because I heard that there was problems with the screen clipper and thats what I use.
- Wei-Yen Tan
I think they [evernote] said in a recent podcast (or blogcast - whatever that's about?) that they want to do a Linux version but don't have the time - they said they're hoping someone else does it for them before they get around to it.
- Greg Gannicott
And as a quick plug, if you're a fan of Evernote and you're not listening to their podcasts, I can recommend them - they really are quite fun.
- Ian Betteridge
I've embedded the mobile EN site into my Netvibes page -- works great. However, when I first did it I had the nice looking iPhone / Android CSS styling. Now I have the fugly old windows mobile style. Is there a direct URL to get the iPhone style site?
If you're wondering what I'm babbling about (you wouldn't be the first!) you can see screen shots in this blog article (not written by me): http://www.jeffkirvin.net/2009...
- Chris Kasten
I looked at it myself... they must be testing for the browser to see which version to show, but why they'd show the old version at all is a mystery to me...
- Fa La La La Lindsay
Just tried from Safari setting user agent to mobile safari (iphone) and still get the ugly version. The groovy version must be gone.
- Chris Kasten
Why Evernote chose not to include templates anymore is way beyond me. It made it so very useful and a rival to OneNote. I keep waiting for them to include them, but it doesn't look like it is going to happen. That is just plain stupid, in my humble opinion. Because of that one thing, V.2.2 was so much better than V.3. You really blew it!
My feelings on this aren't quite as polarized as yours, but I do have to admit that being able to create templates would be very very useful.
- Chris Kasten
The more i use(d) Evernote the more i found out how much it sucks: crappy desktop client that forces you to use/install a mail client and doesn't use the OS's search engine, shortcut keys that don't work, etc. If Evernote wasn't without any real competitor right now, i'd ditch it in a second...
- Ralph
Not sure what Ralph means by "doesn't use the OS's search engine" That has not been a problem for me. Spotlight on the Mac easily finds the files I'm looking for. I know that search on Windows XP (have not used vista yet so I am not sure there) and earlier sucks, so I would recommend you try Google Desktop. I have not found a need for Templates yet.
- Steve Sill
Steve, i can only say, that Windows Desktop Search doesn't seem to be supported. If Spotlight on Mac is supported, then by all means they should supoort search on Windows too.
- Ralph
Wow, for once someone supports something in Mac and not PC and Steve gets in a tissy. Welcome to my world.
- CasperBoo
evernote has never forced me to install a mail client...not sure what that's about
- Trent Olson
From what I've heard from the company, they know the PC client ain't great & they're in the middle of re-writing the whole thing from scratch
- Glenn Slaven
I'm a longtime EN user since seeing them at Digital Life show in 2004! A big fan of templates as well but I enjoy the multiple clients and synching and for now can still get by w/o them but have plans for them if they do come in a future update.
- Tony Vota
from iPod
@Ralph, I am not quite sure what you mean by "not supported". Are you saying that Mac users can use spotlight and search for content within Evernote using the evernote search syntax? Now that Evernote has opened its api's I don't see why Windows Desktop can't be made to do the same thing in the future.
- Wei-Yen Tan
Glad to hear they might be rewriting the desktop version. I stopped using it altogether and will probably uninstall it. When I need to, I save to the Web site, but mostly I use OneNote. For me, it is the best. But look forward to seeing a new Evernote Desktop.
- Jim Corkrum
According to the latest podcast, the CEO of Evernote is getting himself a new pc purely so that he can "road test" the new Windows desktop client personally. I presume it must, therefore, be fairly close to being launched. I've never used Evernote with templates. What did they look like?
- Gordon Herd
Incidentally, podcast also states that they are up to 1.4 million users!
- Gordon Herd
Evernote Tip: The best use I've found for Evernote is remembering peoples' names and info about them when I meet them. I have a notebook called "People" - everytime I meet someone I whip out my iPhone and record about 30 seconds - I cite the persons name and any interesting tidbits of info that came up while I met them.
That's a really good idea, Mike. Again, I never consider it but I end up forgetting little things about people that would totally be worth remembering.
- Christopher Harley
Christopher - yeah it's great when you can run into someone a couple months or even a year later and mention some little piece of information they brought up when you first met them - It really goes a long way. Also, I find that just taking the effort to record it improves my memory where I might not have to actually refer to my record in Evernote.
- Mike Bracco
I do this with the backs of business cards, actually. After I meet someone and get their card, I'll try to jot down info about them on the back that I can draw on later for follow-up contacts. Evernote certainly does seem like a slick tool for this!
- Trent Hamm
+1 Mike! Good pull. This is such an awesome idea - and so obvious that I'm kicking myself for not thinking of this.
- Bill Sodeman
If the person is up for it, you could also take their picture and add it to the note.
- David
Will the web client ever offer the encrypt/decrypt functionality?
- Keith Rowland
what security options do you hope to offer in the future?
- tinnion
When will images be encrypted on Evernote's servers?
- Bill Sodeman
If images are encrypted, then OCR image searching wouldn't work. THis is one of the best features of EverNote. I suppose a Selective Toggle for each image posted would be a nice addition.
- Keith Rowland
Is it possible to scan into Evernote with any printer (with scanning functionality)?
- Jim Young
I like Jim Youngs idea...and I want some Evernote stickers. please? :)
- Clint McManaman
from BuddyFeed
I'd like to hear a summary of tablet computing options with regards to Evernote. Do you have any tablet recommendations?
- Trent Hamm
Indexing issue: I scan a lot of documents into EN as JPG's to force it to OCR the image. This worked well for months. I noticed sometime in March, it seems to have stopped working. I don't think I started doing anything differently. Was there a version release around then that would have changed something to mess me up?
is it in a local-only notebook? As I recall, OCR only happens on the server since this Spring.
- Chris Kasten
Good thought, but no it's not. Image indexing works fine for me when taking a picture w/ a camera, or emailing a picture, but not with scanned JPG's. I'm guessing it's something I'm doing, but as I said, I don't think I'm doing anything differently than I was when it was working for me.
- Matt
I just use the bookmarklet. Is there any advantage to using the add-on?
- Gordon Herd
Hmm..it doesn't work for me still, even manually :S
- Ariel Acentares
I have the Nightly Tester Tools installed, yea... But the Evernote clipper works just fine in 3.5.. Been using the 3.5 betas for a few months now, worked fine all the time.
- Randall Hand
Sorry Evernote...Way too much work to be organized. Outlook and OneNote do it so much better. Maybe if you had included templates in V.3, you might have a better way of Getting Things Done.
- Jim Corkrum
Works fine for me. It's not that much work once things are set up (which only takes a few minutes creating some tags and typing in a few saved searches). I like the fact that EN is flexible enough to let me do GTD in a way that is comfortable to me and not confine me to some template that is comfortable to someone else.
- Fa La La La Lindsay
... that being said, being able to create our own templates would be pretty awesome
- Chris Kasten
Yes, I would like to be able to create my own templates. I would especially like to create one for code snippets to be formatted.
- Fa La La La Lindsay
Really great stuff Lindsay; question: you said "I create a new task in a note by pressing the space bar in the new note so that it will let me edit the note title." What do you mean by pressing the space bar so you can edit the title?
- Andrew
@Andrew, in the Windows client you can't just start editing the title of a new note, (which IMO is really weird), and my tasks are usually just titles. So I found that if I click on the body of the new note and hit the space bar then the title becomes editable. Does that make sense? Maybe it works differently in the Mac client and I know it does on the web but I don't generally use the web client when doing my GTD stuff.
- Fa La La La Lindsay
Not entirely sure why, but as far as I'm concerned, this photo is full of incredible. Maybe 'cause it looks like the Death Star from Star Wars?
- Chris Kasten
@LeoLaporte has started a controversy saying Evernote is better than OneNote. Not for me. OneNote wins easily in most every category. But will look at EverNote again to see what I might be missing.
Where does OneNote store your data? Local machine or Network? Network is pretty important for me, as I access it from my iPhone, Macbook, and work machine via Web Access..
- Randall Hand
agree - as a *note taking* tool it is vastly superior to Evernote. However, Evernotes ubiquity across platforms gives it a huge edge for those who find themselves on Macs/PCs and mobile.
- Jamie
You can tell OneNote to store your data anywhere you want. I use a USB drive for my data. But you can also use Live Sync to keep it updated on all your computers.
- Jim Corkrum
I tried both and feature for feature, OneNote wins. But I find myself not needing a lot of those features (simplicity wins) so I stick with Evernote. Also, Evernote is on different platforms as well as in the cloud. Now I have so much of my brain in Evernote, I will go crazy if they go out of business
- Andre P. Siregar
The only thing I find missing in Evernote is the ability to share with select people like I used to do with Google Notebook.
- Steve Sill
I like OneNote a bit better for the more polished UI -- but I can't afford to license it for all my machines, thus Evernote gets the nod now.
- Chris Kasten
Like most software, a preference for one over the other is a personal thing. OneNote works better for me, but perhaps not for you. Whatever works best for you is the best one.
- Jim Corkrum
I was a Backpack and Yojimbo user and now have brought it all across to Evernote and couldnt be happier. The ability to share it across multiple computers plus having it on my iPhone is invaluable. Things like OCR is just cream on top
- Andrew Wielandt
OneNote won't run in MacOS. Evernote runs in a web browser.
- Bill Sodeman
I still say EverNOTE is a misnomer. It really should be EverDATA. It's not really focused on notes... it's focused on the bits of stuff that make up your life. I use it as much for a file storage mechanism and task manager as I do for notes. OneNote isn't as flexible that way.
- Fa La La La Lindsay
